                  Book Description

In this exciting new book, award-winning sports writer and commentator Frank Deford captures the inspirational stories of many of the greatest athletes and teams to appear on a Wheaties box. For more than 75 years, the Wheaties box has celebrated the essence of being a champion: the character of excellence, the spirit of achievement, and the triumph of determination.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  5 out of 5 stars What Makes A Champion?.......2003-11-21

I must admit that the only time I may have been in awe of athletes was prior to my teenage years.
Never have I pondered over the question, what makes a champion?
However, upon glancing at the table of contents of a book entitled The Heart Of A Champion: Celebrating The Spirit And Character Of Great American Sports Heroes authored by the well-known sports writer and commentator Frank Deford, I was hooked.

Deford has written twelve previous books including novels, biography, sports, social history, humour and has been called the world's greatest sports writer. If you have won the six-time Sportswriter award of the Year and are a member of the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters, being called the greatest sports writer is an understatement.

Sports fans very often treat their sports heroes like demi-gods, however, from the very onset of the book, Deford makes it abundantly clear that athletes are neither gods nor heroes. They are our dream models. As he states: "we imagine ourselves in their places in our daydreams."
Why do many of us look up to our baseball, hockey, basketball or football athletes?

According to Deford, "it is because a sports star is so visible and so beguiling, but also, classical. Athletes not only join us together in this more complicated culture, they connect us to the simpler past. In their glory, they make us feel more whole."

The book is divided into seven sections five of which deal with a particular aspect of what constitutes an essential ingredient of athletic greatness. These five are: commitment, grace, courage, team effort and perseverance.

Within each of these sections Deford refers to athletes who portray a particular attribute that contributes to his or her greatness.

Who can argue that courage is the defining quality of hockey star Mario Lemieux? This Canadian hockey star suffered from excruciating back pains and was forced to undergo two operations. However, what is more amazing is that he overcame the dreadful Hodgkin's decease, a form of cancer and returned to play hockey.

How about Jackie Robinson, who Deford describes as the indisputably single most important athlete in our culture and probably the finest.
The quality of grace is attributed to Robinson, who had to overcome problems with some of his own teammates, blatant racism on the baseball field, and threats from spectators. Nevertheless, he succeeded and paved the way for other African Americans to play in the major leagues.

These are just some of the many seductive stories included in the book along with the 250 full color and black and white photos and illustrations. A book I am sure will find shelf space in the homes and libraries of the many sports enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Tribute Book to Great Athletes.......2002-11-06

Great sports athletes really inspire us. And as I read Frank Deford's inspiring profiles of Cal Ripken, Jr., Tiger Woods, Jerry Rice, Chris Evert, Jackie Robinson, the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team, and ohers, I was again sent back to relive some of the greatest sports moments of my life. The photos enhance the categories of commitment, grace, courage, team effort and perseverance. Frank Deford has captured the enduring spirit of these amazing men and women, and thanks to Wheaties, they ae enshrined in our minds and hearts forever. If you have a sports lover in your family, this is the book to get them this Chrsitmas.

5 out of 5 stars Better than a box of Wheaties.......2002-09-28

Do you remember growing up and hearing about Wheaties, The Breakfast of Champions? We were always told that if we ate our Wheaties, we would grow up to be champions as well. Well, that part of the story never did hold true for me, but the champions that did appear on the front of the cereal box over the years have proved to be an enduring selection of sports heroes who have great stories behind their acheivements.

In this very engaging and beautifully photographed book, the front of the Wheaties' boxes that I remember as a child have come to life. The author, Frank Deford, has written great essays to allow us to better understand the underlying stories behind the athletic acheivements of these memorable champions of sports.

Interestingly enough, I am not a big follower of sports and originally purchased this book as an early Christmas gift for my brother. Sitting down for a cup of coffee, I became involved with the book and found myself enjoying the well written stories and great historical photos. I've decided to keep this copy, and I'll buy my brothers and nephews additional copies for their own use. I'm sure they will enjoy the great gift.

I highly recommend this book. Trust me, it is much better than reading the back of the Wheaties box while enjoying a bowl of cereal.

I originally borrowed this book from the library, and decided to purchase a copy of my own, to mark up. I am going to Florida this month, so I will find out how true, relevant and current all of the information is.

As a travel planner, it gave me a lot of information I needed, in one central place, and I value that.

If nothing else, it is worth a trip to the library. If you like it - you can purchase a copy of your own!

                      Book Description

                      INTRODUCTION

Miami is a gorgeous, gaudy city, resting on the edge of the Caribbean like a tropical paradise, at least climate-wise. The people on the beach are as tan and toned as they are on TV, and the weather rarely dips below balmy; there are lazy palm trees everywhere, and wide, golden beaches spacious enough to seem empty even on a sweltering Sunday in high season. And, for a place built on holidays and hype, Miami lives up to, and revels in, every cliché: sleek Art Deco hotels; pumping, hedonistic nightlife; cafés full of aspiring models - you'll likely see all these things even during a brief stay. Miami's not all beaches and beautiful people, though; what few visitors expect is the city's diversity, exhibited in its glorious tropical gardens and excellent modern art museums, plus vibrant Cuban and Haitian immigrant communities.

Founded little more than a century ago, Miami has grown up fast from its beginning as a humble trading post, first losing its backwater feel with the extension of Henry Flagler's railroad in 1896. In the 1920s, local businessmen aggressively seized the chance to capitalize on the new vogue for vacations in the sun, and a hotel building boom in Miami Beach ensued, producing some of the greatest Art Deco masterpieces in the country. Aside from a brief period during World War II, Miami remained a prime vacation destination until the early 1960s, when the first wave of Cuban refugees arrived, fleeing a newly installed Fidel Castro and his communist regime. This set the stage for a further flood of immigrants from Cuba and other Latin American countries; indeed, more than half of Miami-Dade County's current population was born overseas. Because of this, to many further north, Miami is seen as barely part of the US, a place that's tropically lawless and suspiciously bilingual.Yet at the heart of the city is a glorious contradiction: to Venezuelans, Peruvians and other new Latin arrivals, it's a quintessentially American town, ordered, safe and filled with opportunity.

In some ways, both sides are right. In addition to dealing with its transformation into a multi-ethnic metropolis over the course of a few furious decades, Miami endured violent, headline-grabbing race riots, an alarming murder rate that was at one point the nation's highest, and a role as a prominent port-of-entry for the drug trade. However, by the 1990s the situation was improving, thanks to a stronger local economy and a number of city revitalization projects. Miami's makeover as a hip, hot city was cemented when South Beach was "discovered" by fashion photographers, bringing swarms of beautiful people, both models and visitors, in their wake. Some of that glamorous sheen has already, perhaps inevitably, worn off, but so have some of the more damaging parts of the city's reputation - making for a constant and welcome defying of expectations for the casual visitor.

This guide book describes the character, history and flavor of various parts of South Florida, and also provides a range of recommendations for restaurants, hotels, etc. Those are the two things that I look for in a travel book, and this book provides both.

                          1 out of 5 stars bite me........2006-04-06

Eh. You know how some books can make me bitter? This is one of them. I thought this was going to be one of the more realistic books about college life, but damn. Sorry, but I refuse to believe that a party-girl like Kim can Suddenly Realize what she should and should not do. And for her to care that much about the father she has never known? Hah. I HIGHLY doubt it. It's really annoying when writers keep trying to make a drama out of every little event. I guess this book (this series?) is targeted for middle school kids who for some reason adore reading about college.

                          Sue me.

2 out of 5 stars Relating to Kim.......2005-06-16

I was not able to connect with Kim on any level b/c i am not as screwed up as her. I couldn't fathom why she didn't try harder in the beginning of the book to help herself when she first realized she had a problem. The only part of the book that was interesting was Kim's interest in "straight-laced" Joe which happens to be a dissapointment as well. You might enjoy this book if you are in any way like Kim. Enjoy.

                          5 out of 5 stars very good.......1998-03-05

I really like this series! It is so so realistic, and good. I can't put either of the books down. Now I feel bad for Kim. She doesn't have a father, and suddenly wants one, is living in a rat infested apartment, her apart ment mate was selling drugs, her eletrcity suddenly went out when she was typing her paper and didn't save it, and she falls for a guy with a girlfriend! Read it. You'll like it.
