A fantastic summary!.......2003-01-09
Stevenson does a beautiful job of mixing great descriptions, colorful pictures and a story of Galveston's geologic development into one book. This book is appropriate for parents, those interested in poking around in Galveston for wildlife, and biologists who are getting acquainted with the area. It covers such a vast array of wildlife in an easy-to-understand format that is just fascinating. I loved it!

Book Description
It ought to be just a game, but basketball on the playgrounds of Coney Island is much more than that for many young men it represents their only hope of escape from a life of crime, poverty, and despair. In The Last Shot, Darcy Frey chronicles the aspirations of four of the neighborhood's most promising players. What they have going for them is athletic talent, grace, and years of dedication. But working against them are woefully inadequate schooling, family circumstances that are often desperate, and the slick, brutal world of college athletic recruitment. Incisively and compassionately written, The Last Shot introduces us to unforgettable characters and takes us into their world with an intimacy seldom seen in contemporary journalism. The result is a startling and poignant expose of inner-city life and the big business of college basketball.

Hoop Dreams.......2006-03-29
If you like hoops you would love this story. Darcey frey the author who's also a sports writter follows the life of three young men who's dream is to become professional basketball players.Living in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn these three men are faced with durgs violence, and everything you see on the streets of Brooklyn. A very inspirational story, and a indepth look on the career of Stephon Marbury. This is a book you would want to share with a friend.
Symphony of words.......2006-01-27
This book should be a classic, if it isn't already. As someone who hasn't a great deal of interest in basketball, I can throughly recommend it simply for the author's style. The man's prose reads like a dream as he brings the characters to life in an inimitable way. He enables you, the reader, to go right into the streets of New York and live the lives of each of his main characters, to get to know them, understand them and - in a sense - to *be* them. A definite must for your library.
Reality Check--I LOVED this book!.......2005-12-16
The book, The Last Shot, journeys into the streets of Coney Island in New York City, and into the lives of four young men aspiring to become basketball all-stars. These boys of Coney Island are Russell Thomas, Corey Johnson, Stephon Marbury, and Tchaka Shipp, all of whom are "to-be" high-school seniors with the exception of Stephon who is yet a freshmen. Corey, Stephen, and Russell live right in the Coney Island "projects", or districts, amidst the violent gangs, drug dealers, and drunks of New York. We learn that even the police are rarely seen in this area although a reason for that is never provided. It seems as if the only way for boys to focus on positive things is through basketball. Numerous basketball courts exist in the projects but one, in particular is important to these four boys called the Garden. Countless hours are spent on this court, practicing shots, dribbling, playing pick-up games, and organized tournaments. Also playing basketball for their high school Varsity team, these young men are recruited by a large amount of NCAA basketball coaches. They all have the potential to play college ball at Division One schools but how do they deal with the negative influences that surround them daily? Missing the required 700 point SAT score would mean, sadly their hopes and dreams of playing high-level college basketball would be shattered. This story reveals the riveting truth behind where many of our NBA all-stars originate from.

The Last Shot.......2005-10-21
The Last Shot
By. Darcy Frey
The Last Shot by. Darcy Frey takes place in the projects of Coney Island. All the characters are looking to go to a Division 1 Schools. They all have the talent but don't have the smarts to pass the SAT's. This book is a real page turner Darcy Frey is a very talented writer. I like how he actually uses an NBA superstar in this book. All the characters are great athletes. I like how it goes from Coney Island to the Nike basketball camp and follows the best player on the team Tchaka Shipp. There was no climax in this story. It shifts around so much that it couldn't really have a climax. Darcy Frey is a good sports writer. This book was rather long but it is worth reading. I give it a 5 out of 5 stars.
For Any One Who Truly Cares.......2005-08-09
This book was the best written and best depicted book I have ever read. From the beginning it was raw and real. For any one who truly cares about and loves basketball this is a must read. This is as raw and real as it gets in the basketball world.

Book Description
INTRODUCTION
Australia's second-largest city and capital of the state of Victoria, Melbourne prides itself on being a place that knows how to live well. Although it lags behind Sydney in terms of population, prestige and sheer kinetic energy, its less brazen charms offer a quality of life which other Australian cities find difficult to match. Magnificent landscaped gardens and parklands have made the city one of the greenest in the world, while beneath the skyscrapers of the arresting Central Business District, an understorey of elegant Victorian-era facades presents Melbourne on an agreeably human scale. This is a cosmopolitan and sophisticated city - one that is undeniably a good place to live, and enjoyable to visit too. Residents and visitors alike can take pleasure in its successful mix of ethnically diverse people; the revitalized city-centre laneways and arcades, which now house some of Australia's coolest cafés and bars with interesting and affordable cuisine; and in its leading role in Australian cultural and sporting life.
There's a staid and even boorish side to Melbourne too, as you might expect from a city that had - in comparison to Sydney's incontrovertibly brutal origins - relatively genteel beginnings, when the discovery of gold brought sudden wealth to the infant settlement. Reminders of the old conservatism linger on in the city's uniform layout and relentless suburbanization, and in the way that locals like bragging about inconsequential things like the possibility of having the world's tallest building - the A$500 million Eureka Tower set smack in the middle of the Southgate complex, which is destined to out-monster Manhattan's Trump Tower - or fussing over nothing, such as when visiting American comedian Jerry Seinfeld remarked that Melbourne was "the anus of the world".
That the city has been able to shake off the cultural slough which haunted it for years is largely the result of postwar immigration, which, since 1945, has brought the world to Melbourne, shaking up the city's Anglo-Celtic mindset for good. Whole villages have arrived from Lebanon, Turkey and Greece, many from Vietnam and China, and more recently from Eastern Europe - immigrants who have enriched and energized Melbourne's formerly inward-looking and parochial character.
Over the last decade, Melbourne has also undergone an amazing economic transformation in a huge variety of fields - multimedia, architectural design, fashion, food, drinking and gambling among them - partly thanks to successive, forward-thinking state governments which have spent billions of dollars on infrastructure and major sporting and cultural events. Development has come at a cost - older city and suburban buildings have been demolished, eroding much of Melbourne's past, and wealth is now more unevenly distributed, with increasing numbers of homeless people and drug addicts on the streets. But despite these growing pains, this new Melbourne for the second millennium is today humming with vigour, increasingly comfortable with its mantle of Australia's second city, and looking forward to a confident and prosperous future.
Outside Melbourne, and easily accessible by public transport or car, are a host of rewarding day-trips. Nearby on the coast is Phillip Island, with its famous Little Penguins, and the bucolic backdrops and beach resorts of the Bellarine and Mornington peninsulas. Inland on the city's doorstep the scenic Dandenong Ranges and the prestigious wineries of the Yarra Valley present convenient escapes from the pace of city life, while, slightly further afield, the salubrious spa towns of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs and the grandiose architecture of the former goldmining town of Ballarat - Victoria's largest inland city - offer reminders of the area's nineteenth-century heritage. Heading westwards along the coast, the magnificent Great Ocean Road winds 300km through some of Australia's most spectacular coastal scenery.

Book Description

And guess what? Victory is hers! Before she knows it, the snotty cool kids have been overthrown-and suddenly Adora is the leader, reveling in her newfound power and popularity.

Customer Reviews:
a revolutionary read.......2006-09-12
Adora Benet's nickname, Fringe Girl, refers to more than just her bangs. Her place socially is decidedly on the fringe. Not the Ruling Class, but not one of the Teeming Masses. Her place as a Fringe Dweller is precarious, and she's always taken all precautions to keep it in place. When she's assigned to do an independent project in social studies on a revolution, she decides to start her own. Her goal? Completely overturn the social order at her school, and implement a new "regime." Of course she has other goals too, such as Vin Transom, the boy she's been in love with since kindegarten. But as the revolution gets going, it becomes all consuming, and soon she has succeeded! Adora has been crowned the new leader, and is revelling in her new position as Queen of the Ruling Class. But when she looks around, she realizes she's alienated all her friends, and now only has her Sarcastic Ball for advice -- and it's not much help. Adora wants to make up with her friends, but she wants to keep her spot in the pecking order, too. Is it possible to have both? Or will she have to choose, friends over worshippers? Unexpected plot twists near the end will keep you guessing on her decision. This is an incredibly real, poignant story who will ring true with anyone who has attended high school. Adora is a heroine in her own right, though it takes her a while to realize that, and you will be hoping anxiously for her to reconcile with her friends.
An awesome teen read........2006-06-02
I've been a fan of Valerie Frankel ever since I read Smart vs. Pretty years ago. I've read all of her other chick lit books as well.
It was a nice change to know she released a teen book, because sometimes I need a break and like to read something fun. I was pleasantly surprised to see this book was more than fun. I 'adored' Dora and I'm so happy to know there will be a seqeul coming out next year. Woohoo!
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-06-01
If Adora Benet had her way, the first day of junior year at the Brownstone Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights, New York, could be summed up like this: "I am hot. My heat could melt the belly of an airplane. I am only slightly less on fire than the surface of the sun." Unfortunately, as soon as Adora utters this mantra, she knows it's not true. More matchstick than burning ember, more generally pretty than outstandingly beautiful, Adora knows that she'll never be A-list quality. Sure, she has friends, and yes, she's pretty well ensconced in middle class, but she'll never be the girl who sits comfortably atop the popularity pyramid.
It doesn't help that her well-known parents, Gloria and Ed Benet, are authors of the tomes of wisdom like His-And-Her Seduction and His-And-Her Dating. Those kinds of books, and she can't even get gorgeous, track athlete Vin Transom to notice her. Not even attempting to jog across the Brooklyn Bridge had garnered her a passing glance, even though she did, admittedly, quit three blocks from home for an iced coffee. Nevertheless, Adora wants junior year to be different. Others, though, like Sondra Fortune, queen of the A-listers, most popular of populars, insists on calling Adora Fringe Girl. Sure, it started out when she had a haircut with bangs, or fringe, but it's continued because, Adora suspects, Sondra knows just how accurate the nickname is.
But now Adora has a plan. Mr. Sagebrush, her social studies teacher, has presented an interesting idea to the class. Their term project will be based on the three tenets of bloodless revolution: undermine authority, present an alternative government, and enlist the masses. Adora needs to come up with a proposal, and suddenly the idea is brought to life--why couldn't she, along with her best friends Eli and Liza, stage her own school revolution? Who said Sondra Fortune had to be the undisputed queen of the school's halls? Where was it written, anyway, that a girl on the fringe couldn't rise to queendom?
And so begins Adora's ascent--or descent--into the ups and downs of becoming an A-lister, the queen of cool, the undisputed champion of popularity. Except, as these things have a way of happening, Adora's life as an anti-fringe girl seems to have some really disappointing consequences. Will Adora ever find her place in life, somewhere in the middle of the top and bottom of the social pyramid?
What makes FRINGE GIRL such a fun, fascinating read is the true-to-life characters, the great dialogue, and the interaction between everyone involved. You won't be able to help yourself from rooting for Adora during her bloodless revolution, just as you won't be able to stop yourself from feeling her heartbreak along the way. This is definitely a read that's well worth your time!
Funny, funny book.......2006-04-20
With likeable characters and some screamingly funny dialogue, Fringe Girl is a very enjoyable read. Narrator Adora learns lessons about friendship, social politics, family life, and how to make out as she stages a revolution--for homework, no less--at her exclusive Brooklyn private school.
Amazing.......2006-04-17
Adora Benet is sick of being on the fringe of her school's social world, so she leads a revolution, a "bloodless coup" to redistribute the powers that be. Along the way, she gets a couple of boyfriends, wins and loses friends, and discovers a few secrets among the "Ruling Class" that explains why things are the way they were in the first place. Plus, in classic Val Frankel style, this book is FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY, as well as smart and so 2006.

Fringed twice........2007-07-02
Fringe Girl in Love wasn't as great as the first Fringe Girl, but it was still something fun to read. Some parts toward the middle were a bit slow but picked up once again. I agree with the previous reviewer, that this book lacks something that the previous book had. If there's another Fringe Girl novel, hopefully it will have that spark back.
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-04-04
This sequel to Fringe Girl didn't quite live up to the very high expectations set by the brilliant original, but it sure came close.
As the new year begins, everyone is in love. Dora and Noel. Liza and Stanley. Eli and Eric. Joya and Ben. Even Mr. and Mrs. Benet are doing unmentionable things in their bedroom (and writing a book about it)!
Of course, life is no fairy tale, and none of those relationships remain as blissfully perfect as they seem to be at first. Rifts are caused by an older brother, an old friend, a racist soon-to-be stepfather, and a hot young teacher with a hidden agenda and dozens of adoring followers.
Adora, her friends, and her family will work it all out in the end, though...Right?
FRINGE GIRL IN LOVE is just as funny, fresh and entertaining as the first book, but it lacked something that FRINGE GIRL had, that made Fringe Girl really stand out. Fringe Girl was about Adora's social revolution in her school. That was original, and wove the whole story together wonderfully. This sequel, however, lacks a thread to bind it all together: it's just the continuation of the lives of those characters involved.
Still, though, it's a fantastic book. It's well-written and full of great characters, and I hope to see more about Adora Benet in the future!
