Book Description
Over two years, Greg Breining set out to circle Lake Superior by kayak. Paddling more than one thousand miles, he camped on the lake's islands and shorelines, visited its places of rare beauty and solitude, experienced its wildly varied moods, and explored remote historic sites and isolated communities. The result is Wild Shore, a tale of outdoor adventure, colorful characters, memorable stories, and personal discovery.
Customer Reviews:
Greg Breining's WILD SHORE.......2000-12-31
I have the good fortune of knowing Greg and have paddled and fished a bit with him. Always a strong writer, "Wild Shore" surpasses anything of his to date with its blend of frank honesty (about the frequent terrors of the Big Lake and about loneliness), humor (in confronting edgy weather and wind and lakeside culture), and deep respect for nature and history. It's also a bit of a romance, though not ostentatiously so. Beyond all that it is a marvelous kayak trip on which he leads us.
Great trip around Lake Superior!.......2000-12-01
I really enjoyed Greg Breining's new book "Wild Shore--Exploring Lake Superior by Kayak." He loves history and nature and it shows. He starts north of Sault Sainte Marie, Canada and goes west. He goes for little pieces at a time, usually with a friend or his teen-age daughter. He talks to the local people. He explores what's near the shore (such as the Pukaskwa pits) and what is unique about it. He tells you about the Canadian WWII German prisoner of war camp near Ney. He looks for the woodland caribou and discusses their relationship with the wolves. He visits the Rossport Inn and tells about the sinking of the Gunilda. He visits a ship captain and the Indian man who manages the Grand Portage State Park (in MN). He kayaks around Isle Royale with his daughter, describing its interesting history. He goes to the Apostle Islands (in WI). He meets a fellow in a folding kayak going around the lake like him, but in one trip. He visits a crumbling lighthouse and the very private Huron Mountain Club in the UP of Michigan. He fights the waves and has a good time exploring. He finds interesting places you'd never find in a car. He talks about the then and now. He camps at night and enjoys his cigar and a good cup of tea. It's a very different book than Ann Linnea's book of kayaking around Lake Superior, Deep Water Passage. Much more interesting. He does not focus on himself. He takes many pictures. It is an excellent book. My only problem with it were the pictures and maps. The pictures (which are very good) were very dark. The maps were much too small. Have a good Lake Superior map tucked in your book when you read it. Now you can go around Lake Superior--without the work!
Book Description
Clouser's approach to fly design begins and ends onstream, with a lot of time spent in between at the workbench. Careful observation of the behaviors, habitats, and physical features of the foods fish eat is essential to developing a fly that looks and acts like the real thing. But the pattern must also pass rigorous standards of durability, ease of casting, and most importantly, consistently catching fish before it can be called a winner. Including variations on his famous original Deep Minnow, Clouser presents recipes for seventeen of his most successful patterns for baitfish, subsurface freshwater foods, and surface flies with detailed explanations and superb full-color photographs to accompany every step. In sections devoted to materials and tying techniques, Clouser offers insight into his methods and provides a solid foundation for designing flies with confidence.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-08-27
This book has great photos. You can see the detail in each instructional step for each fly. The book is easy to follow if you're trying to tie these flies from the book alone. It's a great book and Bob's expert fly tying skills come through in every fly. I highly recommnend this book.
Terrific!.......2007-03-07
Bob Clouser has written a VERY detailed, yet concise book. The photos and descriptions of the tying steps are the most detailed and highest quality I have ever seen. You will know how to tie a quality Clouser Minnow or any of the other Clouser flies. No guessing, no mistakes, no do-overs. And does the Clouser minnow work?! I'm a believer.
Simplicity rules!.......2007-01-12
I love simplicity at my tying bench. While its fun to really get in there and whip up some multiple layered, exotic material, ultra-realistic pattern from time to time, in my day-to-day fishing, I want patterns that catch fish, tie up quickly, and don't break my heart when I end up snapping them off.
Bob Clouser's patterns in his new book are just what the doctor ordered; they tie up quickly, use a minimum of materials, and most importantly, they catch the heck out of fish!
I'll face any fish, anywhere, with the appropriately sized and colored Clouser Deep Minnow. It's that good. His other patterns are equally as effective, and who better to learn from than the guy that developed them.
I absolutely recommend this book for the excellent intructions and clear photography, which make this a useful tool for both novice and experienced tiers.
Naturally fantastic.......2007-01-04
As a fly fisherman, I am well aquainted with Clouser's Minnow, a fly box standard, so naturally, I expected and received the genius of Bob Clouser in this book.
I am so pleased with the high-quality pictures and explanations of when, where and why each of the flies catch fish and most importantly, how to properly tie them.
He even goes into great detail to explain what materials to use and even which flies are his favorites and why.
Thank you, Bob for a fantastic book which should be in every fly tier's library.
Very good Book.......2006-03-23
For any one interested in tying any of Bob Clouser's flies this is the perfect book. The hints contained in this book allowed me to tie much better flies
Book Description
An indigenous reservation in the colony of Victoria, Australia, the Coranderrk Aboriginal Station was a major site of cross-cultural contact the mid-nineteenth century and early twentieth. Coranderrk was located just outside Melbourne, and from its opening in the 1860s the colonial government commissioned many photographs of its Aboriginal residents. The photographs taken at Coranderrk Station circulated across the western world; they were mounted in exhibition displays and classified among other ethnographic “data” within museum collections. The immense Coranderrk photographic archive is the subject of this detailed, richly illustrated examination of the role of visual imagery in the colonial project. Offering close readings of the photographs in the context of Australian history and nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century photographic practice, Jane Lydon reveals how western society came to understand Aboriginal people through these images. At the same time, she demonstrates that the photos were not solely a tool of colonial exploitation. The residents of Coranderrk had a sophisticated understanding of how they were portrayed, and they became adept at manipulating their representations.
Lydon shows how the photographic portrayals of the Aboriginal residents of Coranderrk changed over time, reflecting various ideas of the colonial mission—from humanitarianism to control to assimilation. In the early twentieth century, the images were used on stereotypical postcards circulated among the white population, showing what appeared to be compliant, transformed Aboriginal subjects. The station closed in 1924 and disappeared from public view until it was rediscovered by scholars years later. Aboriginal Australians purchased the station in 1998, and, as Lydon describes, today they are using the Coranderrk photographic archive in new ways, to identify family members and tell stories of their own.

Product Description
This book examines the promotion and reception of the image of Franz Joseph (Habsburg emperor from 1848- 1916) as a symbol of common identity in the Austrian half of the Habsburg Monarchy (Cisleithania). In the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century the promotion of the cult of the emperor encouraged a Cisleithania-wide culture of imperial celebration.
Customer Reviews:
Imagining Austria.......2007-05-26
The world of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the long dead country of the Emperor Franz Joseph I now seems utterly mysterious. It is frozen in incomprehensible pageantry, strange rituals, 'kiss your hand dear lady', svelte uniforms (before WWI it was once voted the best dressed army in Europe.) This was the mysterious past so lovingly evoked by the movie The Illusionist.
But here is serious and scholarly book that explains the inner workings of this lost world. Daniel Unowsky is a professor at the University of Memphis who writes with verve, deep knowledge, and flashes of wry humour. This book should be read by everyone with an interest in Austria.
Unowsky understands the importance of ceremony and symbols in Austria-Hunagary. The centre of all this activity was the Emperor himself, the guarantee of stability, the model of a dutiful first servant of his people. This adulation was not accidental and in a riveting chapter 'Consuming the Emperor', he shows how the artless patriotism was in fact controlled and manipulated to achieve 'patriotic' ends.
This book is a must if you want to understand the reality behind the last years of the Habsburg Empire

Representations of the Native and the Making of European Identities
By comparing images produced in Britain and France with those produced in North America, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific, China, and Japan, Anne Maxwell illustrates how colonial photography was used to further different social and political agendas.
She argues that while some photographs were directed at naturalizing the precept of colonialism, others were used to criticize it and to empower indigenous subjects. Written from a postcolonial perspective this interdisciplinary book will be of interest to scholars, students, and researchers.
Customer Reviews:
Colonial Photography and Exhibitions.......2000-11-05
Dr Anne maxwell is justifiably regarded as a world authority on this new and thought-provoking field. With brilliant use of rare photographs and research into old exhibitions, she illustrates her argument; that the various colonial powers of this and last century made clever, political use of pictures and exhibitions. These were propaganda to convince people at home of their own superiority; that it was the duty of "civilised" people to assist faraway savages by subjugating them. Usually industrial interests -- such as the colonial sugar barons -- were the real beneficiaries of this subjugating process.
Dr Maxwell is a senior lecturer at Melbourne University. But her research for this volume stretches far beyond Australia's troubled Aboriginal issue. She looks at how exotic images from the lenses of Victorian photographers stylised and romanticised colonial races. The process included the Hawaiians, the American Indians, the New Zealand Maori, Philipinos and much of Polynesia and Micronesia. She spares us none of the cruelty perpetrated in the name of such questionable progress. Her descriptions of how "primitives" were dragged off to suffer the London winter in grass skirts -- for the amusement of smug Victorian exhibition-gawpers -- make heart-breaking reading. Even the king of Hawaii was exhibited as a curiosity in an American circus!
The photographs, gleaned from museum archives all over the world, are this book's greatest strength. Even the most clinical academic must feel the mute woe in the eyes of the "noble savages" whose tragedy has been frozen, black-and-white, in time.
A must-have for any serious student of Post-Colonial study and for photography buffs.

Look out world, Elvin Bishop is back, and he's better--if a little less bigger--than ever. Author Chris Lynch's overweight antihero has slimmed down a bit since his debut in Slot Machine, and has moved from the frying pan of sports camp into the fires of high school. With the help of his two best friends, Frankie and Mike, Elvin prepares to conquer the hormone-drenched horrors of ninth grade. Almost immediately he finds himself dealing with a bad case of hemorrhoids ("No, it doesn't hurt much... run and find me a tree branch that's on fire and I'll show ya"), surviving a traumatizing trip to the Big & Tall men's store, and suffering a close encounter of the heartbreaking kind. But when the going gets tough, at least Elvin knows he can depend on his offbeat mom to empathize--even though her loving advice is often given with more than a few grains of sarcasm.
With this second Elvin tale, Lynch has once again hit the funny bone on the head. Teens (if they can stop giggling long enough) will appreciate his graceful way of making adolescent pain evoke sympathetic chuckles. His hilarious portrayal of the nightmare that is young adulthood ("Young adult. You know that one was dreamed up by an old adult") makes clear that rather than poking fun at teens' woes, Lynch is laughing right alongside them. (Ages 12 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
I used to have a mother, and a friend, and anotherfriend. Now I got relationships.
Elvin Bishop is fourteen--an official Young Adult. Having barely survived the sports camp that he and his best friends, Frankie and Mikie, attended in SLOT MACHINE, Elvin is actually ready for high school to begin. Or so he thinks.
Suddenly, he's hurled into a whole now social scene, where relationships-the right relationships--are the name of the game. Leave it to Elvin to fall for exactly the wrong kind of girl--the kind of girl who is definitely not a part of any guy's cool plan. And that's just the beginning of his problems. With an appetite that forces him to shop at the Big and Tall, a mother who still talks to her long-dead husband, and a nasty case of hemorrhoids, is becoming cool something that Elvin can even pull off?

Customer Reviews:
The book i read was Extreme Elvin.......2006-02-10
Extreme Elvin by Chris Lynch was really funny. I can't believe that Elvin is so shy to get a girl. Well I enjoyed this book and i liked how the author wrote it to be so funny. I think someone that is like Elvin can learn from it. Also I think this book is appropriate for high school. It mentioned alot of adult things in it and language. But Elvin had to change his whole personallity in like two months. I think Elvin changed alot and the way his friends wanted him to. Some parts of the book was boring and it took along time for it to get really intersting. I liked the chapter when Elvin had the girl he liked over and ate with them. It was funny when Elvin would talk to himself and then say it out loud and people would look at him funny. I would recommend this book because it was really good, funny, and it makes you want to know what is going to happen next.
Extreme Elvin was okay.......2005-10-06
The book Exreme Elvin writtin by Chris Lynch was a very confusing book. It always had me looking back to see if I missed something or forgot to read a page or something. On certain parts in the book, it seemed like it just randomly changed scenes. At one point Elvin was at school then the next he was at a store. But the storyline was great! I enjoyed it. My favorite chapter would have to be "By the Hand" because it got really exciting. It just made you want to jump in the book and punch Mikie right in the face because of how he was forcing Elvin to talk to the skinny girls and not the chubby girl he wanted to talk to. I would have to say this story was appropriate for high school student and some middle school students because it talked about the troubles of high school and girlfriends and stuff. It also had a lot of bad language and mentioned some adult things.
Must Read! Extreme Elvin!.......2004-11-08
Extreme Elvin by Chris lynch is the best fiction book I've ever read. I would recommend this book mostly for kids going into, or in grades 8-12. I could relate to this book a lot because I am in my first year of high school, and so was Elvin. Elvin was a freshman in high school that had to learn what was cool, and what wasn't so he could earn a "reputation" and not be looked upon as an outsider. He was always trying to please the most popular kids and get invited to as many parties' possible. Going through girlfriends and breakups, Elvin was quite a character.
The author Chris Lynch is a wonderful writer. He captures the minds of teens and has a hilarious sense of humor, yet an easy read for your enjoyment. He keeps your attention by showing what really goes on in a typical day in high school. There was always something going on in this book, never a dull moment! Chris Lynch keeps you always wanting more! I couldn't put this book down from the moment I started!
Extreme Elvin is Extremely Funny.......2003-11-09
Elvin is an overweight kid who is starting high school. Unlike his two best friends Frankie and Mike, he is not prepared for what high school has in store for him. He is overwhelmed by the concept of his weight, meeting girls at the school dance, and the peer pressure of some high school seniors who more or less are feared by everyone in the all boys school. This is a hilariously funny book that shows how Elvin's "relationships" with his best friends and mother (and to-be girlfriend) are unique and special. This is a great read, and anyone in jr. high or high school who has a funny, wise guy sense of humor and is not afraid to laugh out loud should read it.
Must-Read!.......2003-05-13
I really loved this book. The thoughts that crossed Elvins mind were entertaining and hilarious. I'm reading it for the second time now...
