Customer Reviews:
Wild and Wicked?.......2007-05-22
If you are wanting a refreshing, rollicking good romance with wit, charm and passion, look elsewhere. This Scotland is more weak and watery than wild and wicked.
eh.......2007-05-07
I read numerous romance novels and this was not so great. I don't think it's so wild and wicked that you make love the day before you get married. Oh, the scandal [sarcasm]. It also didn't seem to move along very well. It definately wasn't a page-turner.
Western/Scottish/American Romance/007 Plot.......2007-04-22
I found this book to be a refreshing change. Set in 1874 Scottand. Full of spies, espionage and all the cloak and dagger stuff--but in a good way. It was also a nicely written romance. I could reread this book in the future and probably pick up more of the cloak and dagger parts. I did not find the book slow and liked both characters. Could have written an epilogue....
pretty good.......2007-04-07
I really liked the beginning of the book when they didn't know who the other was and also the way they found out they were betrothed. However, after this point, I felt like it dragged a little until the very end, which was very exciting.
It was a good book, not my favorite; I probably will never read it again, but it was good enough to provide ample entertainment.
One thing I really liked about it was that Cassie and Devlyn were always able to talk out their problems before they got to the "big misunderstanding."
Great Characters! .......2007-02-22
Wild and Wicked in Scotland by Melody Thomas has a nice mix of romance, mystery and adventure. Cassie is an American Heiress that is engaged to The Earl of Hampstead. He misses their betrothal ball so she decided to set off on an adventure. She heads to Scotland only to find the Earl. It was good and I will read more by this author.

Sweet, but Overly Sentimental.......2001-07-23
This little book (generously type-set to make 167 pages) is set for the most part on the Hebridean island of "Erinsay" (not to be confused with the real island of Eriskay). Its hero is Jamie Stuart, a greedy, selfish yuppie at the outset of the book, who travels to Erinsay, miraculously goes back in time, and has a complete change of heart when he falls in love with a woman in the past. The protagonist's transformation is not believable, and the reader has too hard a time forgiving him for his earlier despicable behavior. Ultimately, when he commits his final selfless act, the reader is left feeling grateful but, unfortunately, not really saddened. Also, as a lover of the Hebrides myself (the reason I read the book in the first place) I was disappointed by how the author belittles the people who live there by characterizing them as quaint, superstitious souls--a stereotype that is sadly lacking in truth.
A story of love, longing and sacrifice for the sophisticated.......1999-08-19
The author of my Sunday School texts surprised me with this rich tale. He captures the dialogue of the Hebrides so well I begin visualizing the people. The book begins slowly; then, by two-thirds of the way through, I couldn't put it down. Call it a romance if you want to, but I found it far more expansive in that we're led to ponder awhile after we close the cover for the last time.
Love beyond time.......1998-11-17
Robert McAfee Brown, one of our greatest theologians, has written his first novel. The book starts in an unrealistic mode, but gets better as Jamie, the main character, travels to the country of Erinsay, and finally to the previous century. This is a story of love, sacrifice, and redemption, not unusual themes for Rev. Brown. The beautiful song the title is taken from is printed on the endcovers of the lovely little book. I recommend it to all who like romance.
A Mysterious Love Story That Lingers in Mind and Heart.......1998-11-09
We know Robert McAfee Brown for his theological non-fiction rooted in hard realism. Here he lets loose his vivid imagination to transport us to the Hebrides Islands off Scotland's coast where, even in the 90s, rural, islander folk hold to the supernatural as a natural part of life. Though they live by pagan and Christian tales that most educated, urban Americans quickly dismiss, as the story lured me in I found myself suspending disbelief and asking, What is Brown saying to us? The pondering continues. And because to pause before mystery and discern what love requires are basic human tasks, this book is as valuable as it is enjoyable. Beautifully crafted, these 168 pages are story-driven with interesting, well-drawn characters. The author employs just enough description to help you see what the flawed, young architect around whom he builds his story is experiencing, and sprinkles his narration with apt, often poetic metaphors. While the setting, the dated consciousness and Scottish dialogue, and even Brown's adapted writing style (I kept flashing on Cold Mountain), may strike us as foreign, even eerie, the book offers an engaging, easy read. Because I'd love to see this book gain wide readership, I'm tempted to shout: "GRAPHIC SEX AND VIOLENCE!" Alas, Brown spares us these. But as he takes you through surprising, timely twists toward his "inevitable but unpredictable conclusion," he confronts you with profound passion, wonder, suspense, and the sadness of both life and death. Can you tell? I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

Book Description
- Sequel to 'Scots Roses' - Over 350 individual watercolour drawings - Excellent guide to plants - Arranged in groups according to colours
Book Description
This is the first book about the extraordinary, decadent life and enigmatic creative works of Donald Cammell (1934-1996) whose first film became a classic. Innovative and provocative, Performance brought a new sensibility to modern cinema. Although it immediately launched Cammell into the international limelight, his career proved elusive. He completed only three more feature films before his 1996 suicide. Yet this elusiveness elevated Cammell into myth and inspired a generation of young filmmakers including Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Roger Avary and Todd Haynes. This biography offers:
* rare stills
* previously unpublished personal photographs
* images from his early career as a portrait painter
* a filmography
* unrealized and uncompleted projects, and screenplays
* dozens of interviews
Customer Reviews:
Why, you all work for me !.......2006-08-16
Overall one would have to say the Umlands' did an excellent job on a difficult subject though I'm not sure about " Anita Pallenberg & Michelle Breton " being world famous actresses -ever. Cammell died around the corner and up the street from me my first year in Los Angeles and having grown up on a lot of British Auteurism in Dublin in the late Seventies & Early Eighties it struck me as profoundly sad that he had somehow managed to come unstuck in the hills & canyons of Hollywood. That said, Donald comes across as a royal pain in the arse in spite of Rebecca Umland's sympathetic portrayal of the
" tortured " artist. One got the feeling by the end of the book that Donald Cammell would have been better served sticking with the Royal Academy and a career in illustration. Certainly the family background lent itself to something closer to the classics and less about the popular medium of Cinema and even less so the fusion of rock n' roll and cinema. He wanders through this Biography, lost or at the very least a bit of a bloody dilletante. I think very telling is the close friendship that was forged with Brian Jones and the complete and utter hatred he and Keith Richards had for each other. Telling because Brian Jones suffered the same malaise. Brian was in love with being in The Stones, Donald was in love with being a movie director but in both cases the sheer hard graft of it seemed to be lacking. Good read, finely illustrated, great fotos and they do a wonderful job of NOT scrubbing around in the scandalous.
a fine book on an enigma.......2006-08-11
I've been waiting a long time for this book. Performance, the film Cammell wrote and co-directed with Nicolas Roeg, is an actual artistic act of magical transformation, and a masterpiece. But the last 25 years of Cammell's life have been a mystery overshadowed by his 1996 suicide. Here at last is a comprehensive, almost scholarly examination of the man and his career, in great detail and with a fine feel for the times (like Marianne Faithfull's comment that compared to Cammell the young Rolling Stones were "lightweights"). The book dispells the myths told about his suicide (which I won't spoil for you), but reveals tantalizing information about his forgotten projects -- man, do I want to see Tilt and Simona (even if I can't unfortunately see Donald's version) -- and I want to track down a copy of Duffy too.
A worthwhile study, beautifully designed and composed. Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

Book Description
A truly intriguing, poetic, and thought-provoking book. The author lives in the Scottish highlands, with poor soil and a harsh climate. His "marginal" garden by design differs as little as possible from the surrounding wildness and requires little maintenance, yet satisfies the essential requirement of any garden by giving its owner pleasure.
Book Description
THE WILD RED DEER OF SCOTLAND Notes from an Island Forest on Deer, Deer Stalking, and Deer Forests in the Scottish Highlands. By Allan Gordon Cameron. Originally published in the early 1920's this scarce deer stalking title is now very hard to locate in its first edition. READ COUNTRY BOOKS have now republished it using the original text, maps and illustrations. The author was an experienced stalker and naturalist who wrote many articles for the sporting journals of that era. The life of a Scottish hill stag is a phenomenon without parallel in the natural history of the species and this book will prove of great interest to all with an interest in field sports and nature. Two hundred and sixty five pages contain fifteen detailed chapters including : Deer Stalking Old and New. - The Hill Stag and the Hill Stalk. - A Naturalist in the Deer Forest. - Calving, Birth Rate etc. - Habits. - Duration of Life. - Stalking Methods. - Antlers (four chapters) - Deer Forest Reforms. - The Ideal Forest. - Deer Distribution etc. This is a fascinating read for any stalking enthusiast or historian of the species, and contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest sporting books, particularly those dating back to the 1800s, are now extremely scarce and very expensive. READ COUNTRY BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

R.H. Review.......2006-11-10
Excellent book, written in the 1920's. Main focus is biology, but 20 to 30% relates to hunting, which is my primary interest. Having only hunted red deer on three estates, the author's observations seem very accurate, based on my limited experience. It would seem to be time for someone to write an updated version, adding the knowledge gained more recently.

Book Description
Blending sage advice with personal experiences and anecdotes, this unconventional book is an unusually thoughtful account of long-distance trekking on the Appalachian Trail. Mueser draws upon interviews and questionnaire data gathered from over 100 long distance hikers hoofing it through the Applachian Mountains.
Customer Reviews:
Filled With Facts.......2007-05-22
The book was filled with a lot of good information for someone looking to hike the Appalachain Trail.
I did have one problem with the book. I found it to be a slow read and I had trouble reading it for long periods of time. It reminded me a lot of my school text books. But if you can overcome this set back you will learn a lot from the book.
The most interesting fact I found was that it costs on average $1 / mile to hike the AT.
Summary of Hiking Issues.......2006-05-27
This book, based on a number of surveys, provides a broad understanding of what hiking the AT is all about. It explores the motivations of thru-hikers along with answering lots of questions most of us have when planning to hike all or sections of the AT. Easy reading, well organized and lots of facts.
Great book for the aspiring A.T. thru hiker........2006-02-17
If you only read one book before hiking the Appalachian Trail, this is the book. The book is very informative and really helping me prepare for my thru hike.
Terrific Statistical Information.......2005-10-08
Roland Mueser has written a terrific book that contains the results of interviewing dozens of hikers. He chose to tackle the subjects of why thru-hike?, footwear, food, equipment, and much more. He also did some scientific testing of his own when it comes to fighting insects. Mueser did a 4-mile run in the woods with DEET and re-did the run without insect repellant so he could tally the bug bites and report his fingings.
Mueser has put together the results of over 100 surveys so that he could bring you some great information that pertains to the long distance hiker.
fascinating.......2004-10-06
This book gives interesting facts about typical hiker experiences on an adventure along a 2000 mile hike along the east coast of the United States. The author portrays the experience as a strange one, and gives survey results from dozens of fellow hikers.

It was okay.......2005-06-14
Before, it was no big deal. James wanted to do things his way, and sometimes Amalia leta him. but now he won't give up. Amalia thinks james doesn't know her anymore. And Amalia is sure that jam,es doesn't know Amalia.
James was a cool dude - Amalia couldn't take it.......2004-12-25
Hi, everyone here seems to write that james was a flat-out loser, but none of you realise that AMALIA was the villain (not the victim) in this book.James didnt hit Amalia so he cannot be classified as abusive. He came close, sure, but didn't touch her (except when they were kissing, heh heh heh). Amalia was lucky to get one kiss out of James cos James is so much cooler than she will eva be. Amalia didnt deserve James. One thing i didn't get about this book was that James wanted to KEEP amalia as his girlfreind. Why would he, he can DO BETTER. James should have hit her anyway to snap her back to reality: Amalia the underdog, James the king. All Hail James!
California Diarys #4 is a good book. James is a hottie and if he lived in my suburb I would surefire go out with him for one steamy night!!!!!
Great.......2004-12-24
to the reader above, are you serious? This book is so good from beginning to end. Cheesy, i think not. Corny....lets be real. The author is actually taking us away from that little fake world the the gurls of the BSC live in and feeding us reality in its truest form. Amalia, just shy of 14yrs of age is experiencing what it is like to be in an abusive relationship and recieves help from friends and family along the way. It's a shame that people can't appreciate good writing when it's right infront of their face
OKAY.......2003-06-17
This book was okay. It was pretty good but a liked dawn and sunny diary one a lot better.
Eh............2002-10-07
Since you have probably read about 20 plot summarys, im going to get straight to the point. This series is alot, if not completely, different from the Baby-Sitters Club series. Im not saying this is a bad thing, but im not saying it's a good thing. Ann M.'s writing style is way diffrent, and so are the charectors. They have bigger and a little more important problems from those of Kristy, Claudia, Mallory, Stacey, Jessise, etc. Finishing this book only minutes ago, I have to say it was quite chessy at times. I felt a little embaressed for the author who was obviously trying to make the charector sound "cool". I thought Amalia's drawings were a little, well, stupid, and the dialouge kind of corny. I thought it was rather boring sometimes, and struggled to finish it. I have read three others in this series, and thats enough for now.
MAYBE I will read another one in time, but not for awhile....
