1 out of 5 stars incoherent and uninformed.......2007-09-26

I'm all for criticizing science. Something with such a broad scope, and such deep inquiry necessarily makes a huge impact on our society, by shaping our understanding of everything in the world around us. By all means, make that process sharper and more rigorous.

Roszak, unfortunately, is utterly uninformed about science, which results in criticisms that are baseless, absurd, or patently straw men. He also freely courts obfuscation as an art form. I understand there are people who think that if they don't understand something it must be deep. Sometimes it is. Other times it's due to someone who hasn't the faintest idea of what they're saying, and tries to hide this in nonsense. Roszak is no Derrida, but he has his moments of sheer nonsense.

If you hate science for some strange reason, reading this might make you feel good. But so would taking a hike, or eating ice cream, or whatever. Go do that. Don't melt your brain with Roszak.

    5 out of 5 stars A Watershed Book.......2007-06-26

This is one of my treasured rubber-banded paperbacks; I re-read it regularly (and replace the worn rubber band with new). Roszak's work here (and in The Making of a Counter-Culture, another rubber-banded edition in my book collection) was a personal watershed for me in the mid-70s, allowing me to understand the tragic appeal of "mystification" in my own life and to begin my own transcendence of "objective consciousness." A joy to re-read during this 40th anniversary of The Summer of Love.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the Counterculture.......2000-09-08

Roszak analyzes the single vision philosophy of the Judeo-Christian tradition and its descendant, science. These two seemingly opposing philosophies are seen as the foundation of the creation of the dominant technocracy which is poisoning the planet and alienating manking. His analyses of Blake, Wordsworth, and Goethe are also interesting and erudite. The amazing feat of this book is that he broadens his analysis of the Counter Culture to the foundational roots of the problem. An amazing, life-changing book, which will make you re-evaluate "progress" and the alienating powers of our technocratic age. It should be required reading for all philosophy and science classes.

          Book Description

Himalayan Quest offers an unforgettable glimpse into the remarkable world of Ed Viesturs, America's best-known high altitude climber, and the breathtaking landscape in which he works. It is an unparalleled showcase of both the heartbreaking tragedy and the ineffable joy Viesturs has experienced while striving at the limits of human endurance. Written with Peter Potterfield, an award-winning mountaineering journalist, Viesturs narrates his quest to climb the 14 highest mountains in the world—those peaks above 8,000 meters in height. To date, Viesturs has succeeded in summiting 12 of the peaks, including five separate ascents of Mount Everest. For these ascents he has been profiled in Outside and Sports Illustrated, People, Newsweek, the New York Times Sunday Magazine, and has appeared on NBC's Today. As a spokesman for Microsoft, he is often positioned at the top of the company?s Web site.

At the center of this extraordinary account of his mountaineering adventures are Viesturs's own awe-inspiring photographs from the top of the world. This collection of images will show readers, like never before, the deadly beauty and haunting menace of the Himalaya. A unique, inspiring, and spine-tingling glimpse into the rarified world of the extreme climber, Himalayan Quest will appeal not only to Viesturs?s significant fan base (fondly known as Edophiles or Edheads), but to outdoor aficionados and armchair adventurers everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars great coffee table book.......2007-08-23

this is more of a picture, small coffee table book that a reading book. it is very informative and interesting. it really puts you in the himalayas

3 out of 5 stars not as detailed as I would hope.......2007-08-09

This is a gorgeously produced book, and the photos are phenomenal. That said, it was not as detailed as I hoped for it to be. The official Amazon writeup describes this as "replete with detailed maps" -- there are small drawings of a few routes to the top, but they go no more in-depth than pointing out each base camp. Each individual summit mentioned gets three or four paragraphs of copy at most (sometimes less), and this copy is more likely to focus on how Viesturs got the specific photographs shown than on anything else. Discussion of specific challenges on each climb, landmarks on the way, etc., is extremely minimal.

Don't get me wrong -- if outdoor photography is your passion, this is a treasure trove, and the book is beautifully done on its own merits. But I don't think those merits are accurately summed up in the Amazon review, and as such, potential buyers may be misled into believing that this is a more detailed climbing book than it is.

          5 out of 5 stars Himalayan Quest.......2007-03-30

Ed Viesturs is one of the world's leading mountaineers. His adventures have taken him to the worlds 14 tallest peaks. Along the way, he has captured the spirit of these places with his camera. Ed's pictures really make you feel like you're experiencing the high himalaya for yourself. The pictures he takes not only expresses the natural beauty of these places, but it reveals the soul these places posess as well. Cultural and social identity is not overlooked in Mr. Viesturs work. This is truly a collection that anyone can enjoy, not just the climbing community. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Top of the world.......2007-01-19

Ed Viesturs has packed this book with magnificent photos of Himalayan mountains, particularly the peaks over 8,000 meters. His goal is to climb all of those peaks and to do it without auxiliary oxygen. Since the publication of this book, he has accomplished his goal. Mr. Viesturs is clearly a magnificent climber and Himalayan Quest gives you an extremely good idea of the ground he covered and the types of obstacles he had to overcome. Only a very few people in the world could have done what he has done. If you like spectacular mountain pictures, this is a book for you. If you are more interested in detailed descriptions of his climbs, read this book and move on to his new book No Shortcuts to the Top.

          5 out of 5 stars Himalayan Quest.......2006-11-03

Ed Visturs is one of my all time heroes. I read a lot of mountain climbing books and Ed is realistic and honest. The adventure is not contrived it is real.

There are 17 well planned tours including everything from routes to accommodations to map references. I have used this book for two tours, one in France and one in Germany. My only complaint is that the accommodations tend to be a little on the basic side. I would have preferred some more upscale options.

3 out of 5 stars Not the latest thinking.......2006-07-13

This book is good from a historical perspective but is quite dated, all of the examples are from the early 90's. Even the authors at PRTM are not selling PACE as the latest thinking. The Cooper book on Product Leadership is a good overview of stage gates, and The Toyota Product Development System provides a more holistic view of product development, covering culture.

1 out of 5 stars Even as an ad it is not very good.......2003-12-13

This is nothing more than a rehashing of some very old concepts cleverly disguised(or so the author thinks) in a bunch of vague terminology. As a book it lacks substance. As an ad for the author's consulting service it doesn't offer enough too make anyone, with any knowledge or experience in this area, want to hire them. But if you are easily impressed by high-sounding terms and promises of speed to market and lots of savings, etc...then this book and many others like it, is for you. If you're looking for a real solution for designing better products, faster - look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Ship on time and under budget.......2002-11-16

If you've ever wondered why some companies seem to be able to get products out the door reliably and others end up having constant battles between sales, marketing and engineering, this book will help clarify the situation. Not only is building great product on time and on schedule possible, it's a repeatable process. Even if you don't buy into the entire process of PACE (Product And Cycle-Time Excellence) you can still benefit from some of the concepts around a core team to encourage better communications at each stage of development.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Product Development books that I have read.......2001-03-30

In the last few years I must have read around 30 or more books on Product Development (OK!!! to keep track of what is going on is part of my job! :), from old authors from the 70's (Jones) to more recent books. In my opnion, "Setting Pace.." is very clear, very consistent, and provides a VERY good understanding of the nature of Product Develoment in industrial, manufacturing oriented businesses. Nevertheless, I don't know whether or not this book is good for software development. From the reviews bellow, it appears not to be the case.

In any case, and if your business is not software, it is a MUST READ to any Manager or Director involved with the in NPD. Just don't expect the book (or worse, external consultants) to do YOUR job of improving YOUR PD process for you. It doesn't exist! Furthermore, one book does not bring all of the solutions. Look around. Read other books. Talk to people. Visit other companies. See how they are doing! Make your mind BEFORE engaging in a PD reengineering project.

          Claudiano, Ph.D....

2 out of 5 stars Waterfall Method Revisited for Software Development.......2000-06-09

This guide can be very misleading for those working in the software development world.

Apply this method to Software Engineering, and you are revisiting the old Waterfall Method of software development. In today's E-commerce and e-Enterprise worlds, this is not a good place to visit for long. I would only recommend this to folks developing products in a manufacturing environment.

However, Phase 0 Reviews could be a very useful tool on an executive level as a Project Methodology for initiating and prioritizing software development projects and ensuring a product's overall strategic fit while allocating development resources.

This is not just a book about cars. It's about people, corporate culture, and a company town. Helen Earley was an Oldsmobile employee for many years. Yes, she discusses the cars and the ups and downs of Oldsmobile. However, the reader also gets background on what it was like to work and live in Lansing, MI, the home of Oldsmobile. Thus, readers see the interweaving of corporate cuture and community that make up a company town. Because of that, this is not just a book for Oldsmobile fans. It is also a very interesting piece of business and social history.

          Book Description

You can finally find the perfect balance between family and work, and enjoy being a Marathon Dad. Every man who struggles to be a good husband, father and professional knows the feeling. You're on the run from the boardroom to the classroom; you have to juggle toys and files, children and clients. And choosing one aspect over another piles guilt upon panic, upon exhaustion. Now, for the first time, here is practical and psychologically sound advice toward combining a career and fatherhood. Psychologist John Evans, himself a Marathon Dad of three, shows that a working father doesn't have to sacrifice what is most important in his career or his home to be successful on both fronts, but he needs to make significant changes in the way he does things. This book is an action plan leading you through that process, step by careful step.

Evans shows how to establish realistic priorities, manage time effectively, communicate clearly, and answer questions that plague all working parent: How can I be in two places at once? How can I do my best at two conflicting tasks? How can I love two things equally? The author presents real-world programs and guidance on how to stop an overloaded schedule from claiming emotional fulfillment and intimacy as its casualties--strengthening your relationship with your children and your wife. Can a man be a first-rate, fully committed husband, father and professional, all at the same time? No doubt about it: with dedication, commitment, and prioritizing, Marathon Dads can have the best of all worlds. Here's exactly how its done.

5 out of 5 stars The next giant step in the development of fatherhood!.......1998-11-02

In "Marathon Dad" (Avon Books, 1998) John Evans details the next giant step in the devlopment of fatherhood. Much effort has gone into the attempt to better connect men to their emotional lives. And equal energy has been invested in establishing appropriate limits for male behavior. But seldom, if ever, has there been a more detailed and concise attempt to integrate the reality of modern maleness with the passionate and heartfelt viccisitudes of fatherhood. In sparkling prose that reflects an intimate familiarity with the daily dramas of parenting, Evans takes on the ego-wobbling fears at core of modern dad's hesitancy to attach as much importance to diaper changing as slo-pitch softball; fear of confronting mom; fear of the mockery of other men; fear that in this domain, as in so many others, he will not be man enough. Evans provides the foundational gridwork upon which a strong structure of competent fathering can be built. When Freud was asked what mattered in life he responded, "Only two things - love and work." Evans amply demonstrates that the time has passed when the American man can in good conscience sacrifice one for the other. "Marathon Dad - Setting a Pace that Works for Working Fathers" is above all a book about love - a father's love for the most precious work he will ever share; his family.

5 out of 5 stars High Hurdles Series is the best!.......2007-05-31

These books are the best horse series written for people who absolutely love show jumping. These books seem to be more like "real life" than fiction as DJ goes through problems and has to make life changing decisions. These books are very well written and it is hard to put them down! Love them! I hope to see more soon!

5 out of 5 stars Some Of My Favorite.......2005-11-14

I LOVE'EM. I have read 6 but we don't have the rest I wish I could find them where they are not so high-priced. I love reading and I read 2 in 1 day once but I can't wait till I get the next ones.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Books.......2001-12-08

I really really like this series! DJ is almost my age. I got the first and 3 books for a present at my church one day and after I read those I knew I had to get all of those books!!! I've read all 10 books and they made me laugh and cry because DJ has a life like mine. In a lot of stories they want their characters to seem like they have a perfect life but these books are like that. I have read the books over and over and I REALLY can't wait until Lauraine comes out with a new book!

5 out of 5 stars These books are amazing!!.......2001-03-02

I have a 12 yr. old daughter who hates to read. I had a terrible time getting her to pick up a book. She recieved this series of books for Christmas, and has read books 1-6 and it's only the first of March! She says that they are great, and when she finishes one she can't wait to start the next book.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Books!.......2000-12-08

The High Hurdles series is great! I've read all ten books and I want to read another! DJ's life seems so real. I love dogs and Horses, so I'm glad she has both. I didn't think that Major should have gotten hurt, but Herndon is a good Horse too. I love to read, and these books are wonderful! I am a Christian so these books are right up my alley. I love this series, and I hope that Lauraine Snelling writes another one! I rate this one way higher then a 5!

          Book Description

Carole Hanson never knew that falling in love could be so easy--as easy as falling off a horse! Cam may be setting the pace, but Carole's right in step, and now she wants everyone to share her happiness. Life just couldn't get any better, could it?

But the New Year may bring new challenges for Carole and for her friends Stevie Lake and Lisa Atwood. While Stevie helps a friend confront his past, Lisa looks toward her own future--and nothing will be quite the same.

The close of an old year and the opening of a new bring unexpected endings and beginnings for everyone. It just takes courage to keep up the pace.

In this book, Cam, Carole's boyfriend is pressuring her to step up the pace, but Carole's not entirely sure she wants to. Callie must come to terms with what happened out in the woods with a former friend who has turned into a stalker. Lisa might have to move, although she has half a senior year to go. And Stevie is training her mare for three-day eventing.

          3 out of 5 stars Good book.......2004-07-03

Its a good book. I hope Lisa gets back together with Alex Lake and not with Scott. It's good that she's not moving away. I'm dlad that Callie's lover is moving away but what will happen to "Joyride". I hope they make more books well more than 17.

4 out of 5 stars Setting the Pace.......2001-04-22

Experiencing teenage anguish is something most people can identify with - or at least remember. In the newest book in the Pine Hollow series by Bonnie Bryant, titled Setting the Pace, four best friends, Lisa, Carole, Stevie and Callie, struggle through slightly cliche but very engaging problems. Lisa faces moving halfway through her senior year; Carole has a boyfriend pressuring her to go farther physically then she wants; Stevie is training for a horse race; and Callie is haunted by a stalker. All these problems weave around their daily life struggles at school, home and at the stable they all ride at. By weaving many plots together, Bryant effectively holds a reader's interest throughout the entire novel. Any person struggling with ther own problems can take a step away into the happily-ever-after complicated lives of the friends, and walk away with a brighter moral and encouraging perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Pine Hollow Setting the Pace.......2001-03-12

I Luved this book!!!!!!! It was great. I'm so glad that Lisa's mom decided not to go through with the move. I'm concerned with Cam and Carole's breakup. Now what's going to happen? As for the George thing I think he should just get a life, he is so close to stalking Callie.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Yet!.......2001-01-22

I loved this book! It cleared up lots of the questions at the end of the last book. For instance, Lisa's mom's decision on moving-whew! That had me worried for a little while! The rest of the book was a little more predictable. I could tell from book 13 that the Cam-Carole thing wouldn't last. And I, for one, am glad. What a jerk! I definitely want to see more of Ben. I'm dying to find out more about him(and Zani)-I hope we find out more in the next book. The George situation wasn't too surprising either. He's always given me the creeps-it's not hard too imagine him turning into a stalker. Also, what has happened to Kate, Christine, John, and Skye? I'd like to find out more about what happened to them. Despite it's predictability I loved this book and I can't wait for #16!

          5 out of 5 stars Tricky Issues.......2005-10-08

It takes a lot even today to publish a book dealing with a situation as touchy as racism. For that, Snelling should already be awarded for speaking out and raising awareness that blacks are no different than we are. In fact, DJ's friend Hilary seems so good that I probably will take twice the time she took to learn to get to Hilary's level. DJ still isn't sure about her mother marrying Robert and his torpedo Double B's that always makes the books more fun, even though she tells her best friend Amy that she wants to call off the wedding. Dealing with a lot of emotional issues in this book, it was a treat to read, and has me anticpating what is still to come.

          4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2000-05-23

Overall this book was good, I think it was the best of the series so far but I think that's because by this time we understand more of the characters and how they act. I really enjoyed this book and suggest it to anyone.
