Bestselling author Bob Rotella, the guru-cum-sports psychologist of choice among the world's top golfers, lines up a perfect double entendre with Putting Out of Your Mind. To putt out of your mind--to master this crucial part of the game--you've got to get putting out of your mind--to make it so second nature that you're not actually thinking and stressing once you're standing over the ball.

As Brad Faxon, a Rotella devotee and one of the best putters on the PGA Tour, emphasizes in his introduction, "The secret of great putting is not in the stroke. It's in the mind. When you putt, your state of mind is more important than your mechanics." Once you can imagine yourself sinking a putt, you've exponentially improved your possibilities of actually knocking it in. It's an important lesson, and he learned it from Rotella.

Rotella demystifies the mechanics, accenting instead the importance of a pre-shot routine to help you more effectively visualize your putts and serve as a security blanket when you're facing a breaking downhill five-footer with the match on the line. Most important, Rotella preaches the idea that putting is actually fun for good putters. It's the part of the game they relish most. You'll no doubt find yourself relishing it, too. --Jeff Silverman

Book Description

This old adage is familiar to all golfers but is especially resonant with Dr. Bob Rotella, the bestselling author of Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect and one of the foremost golf authorities today. In Putting Out of Your Mind, Rotella offers entertaining and instructive insight into the key element of a winning game -- great putting. He here reveals the unique mental approach that great putting requires and helps golfers of all levels master this essential skill.

Much like Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect and Golf Is a Game of Confidence, Putting Out of Your Mind is an informative and valuable guide to achieving a better golf game. While most golfers spend their time trying to perfect their swing so they can drive the ball farther, Rotella encourages them to concentrate on their putting -- the most crucial yet often overlooked aspect of the game. Great players are not only aware of the importance of putting, they go out of their way to master it, and mastery can only begin with the understanding of the attitude needed to be a better putter. Rotella's mental rules have helped some of the greatest golfers in the world become champion putters and, for the first time, are now available to golfers everywhere.

With everything from true-to-life stories of such greats as Davis Love III, David Duval, and Brad Faxon to dozens of game-changing practice drills, Putting Out of Your Mind is the new bible of putting for amateurs and pros alike.

5 out of 5 stars "Putt" it There.......2007-04-12

Trust your first instinct when you hit the green, and learn to keep those negative thoughts at bay. This mental and technical guide to putting will help you improve your form.

5 out of 5 stars Excellently presented.......2007-03-08

Very straightforward and comensensical. Seems everything we read these days is about positive thinking. And it does work along with a good basic set up. I especially like his instruction that once you are over the ball, don't wait there and let negative thoughts sneak in. Go ahead and hit the ball. He says to trust your first instinct when you read a putt and I have always found that to be true. Can't wait to put his recommendations into play.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2006-02-25

Any golfer (including disc golfers) would benefit from this book. It's a very good book!

5 out of 5 stars A dose of confidence can be the cure.......2006-02-24

So much of golf and golf instruction is mechanical, and justly so. Technique is very important in a complex action such as the full swing, and improper form can lead to both bad shots and injury.

In contrast, we have putting. The action on the ball is so slight and simple, mechanics themselves are important only at a very rudimentary level. Technique has more to do with guaging individual variances for a particular situation than it does moving from positions A to B to C.

This is why putting is called the "game within a game". It resembles so little of the rest of golf. It also makes it one of the most difficult for the mechanics oriented golfer to master.

What Rotella has done here is to lay out his observations of what the best putters in the game think and do, not with their stroke, but with their minds. Using examples of unusual putters like Locke, he points out that it is not the stroke itself that counts, but your confidence in it. Locke believed he was hooking the ball into the hole, when this was likely not the case. Still, his stroke, which cut across the ball, made him one of the best putters ever because he believed in it.

Rotella goes further, discussing people with more "technically sound" strokes, such as Faxon and Crenshaw. Crenshaw, in particular, is an interesting case. Rotella introduces a story in which Crenshaw, in one sentence, completely turns putting instruction on its head, much to the horror of a professional golf instructor. Again, what is important is what was in his mind, not what a slow-motion camera might reveal.

People frustrated with their putting may find good, solid information here on how to improve. The biggest test will be trying to apply it, which may be harder than any swing change you could imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Choose Your Own Adventure.......2007-09-10

These books are fantastic - I have fond memories of them from my childhood. As a school teacher, they are a wonderful read aloud. I let the children vote everytime there is a choice. They think they're great!

5 out of 5 stars Great reading for people of all ages.......2007-09-03

We have read Choose Your Own Adventure 1-6, and our 7 year old son, my husband & I were glued to every book. The books are well written, interesting & intriguing. Not too scary but gripping. We highly reccomend these books to everyone. They can be read & reread, a real plus.

1 out of 5 stars NOT the original books.......2007-04-20

My children have been enjoying some of my old Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 80's, so when I saw this rerelease of several classic books for such a reasonable price, I bought it for them. Well, apparently R.A. Montgomery wasn't able to get the rights on the original illustrations, so he had a bunch of freelance designers from Thailand draw replacement pictures for each of them, and they are AWFUL. Not just 'different,' but shockingly, unignorably BAD -- they look like cartoons drawn carelessly by teenagers, with no sense of proportion, anatomy, lighting, or anything else. The drawings in "Mystery of the Maya" are not bad but most of the others are so terrible they render the books unreadable. Leaving them unillustrated would have been better than this. Find used copies of the originals (most of which are for sale cheap on Amazon) or just pick something else to read.

2 out of 5 stars Paths Too Short.......2007-03-30

You make one or two choices and the book is over. They should only have a few endings and make each path longer.

      5 out of 5 stars My 9-year-old LOVES these.......2007-01-10

We bought these books for our son because we remembered how much we loved them at his age. They are much quicker reads than I remember, but he loves them, so they get 5 stars. One book takes him less than 45 minutes to get through. He hasn't gotten to the stage where he goes back and makes different choices yet, but I'm sure he'll become even more fond of them then.

      5 out of 5 stars Start here!.......2007-09-29

If you are new to choose your own adventure, I recommend starting with
these 4. They are the first in the new series, and are all individual
books. I am pretty sure they are all reprints, and the art is definitely
new, but they are a great place to start as they cover a wide range of
topics. The bottom line is kids will eat these books up, not just because
they are about great topics, with fun art and very well written but
because they get to choose. They get to pick where they go, what they do,
and all they while they are reading. A warning though, buy this box set
and you might have to by the next.

      5 out of 5 stars A classic collection returned.......2007-07-10

Choose Your Own Adventure collections have always been a part of the series, and carrying on that tradition is this collection of the first four books in the newly republished series.

If this is your first trip into CYOA, or are a long time fan coming back, this is collection has a lot to offer. The first four are a nice mix of adventure, mystery, and sci-fi and you get a good feel for the writing of author R.A. Montgomery. The stories have been updated for the times, which is to say the "You" character now has cell phones, GPS and the like. The art has also been redone, but continues to be of excellent quality and pertinent to the choices. Those choices, however, are still the same. They are yours.

There are also collection of 5-8 and 8-12. Six book collections are available as well, but if you are looking to get a started in choosing your own adventure, this collection is a great way to start.

Finally, on a personal note, its great to see the series back!

1 out of 5 stars Warning: These are NOT the original books.......2007-04-21

Don't buy this set expecting a reprinting of the original 1978-1982 Choose Your Own Adventure books. The text has been revised, though the revisions are serviceable enough; but what's worse is that all of the illustrations have been replaced with hideously bad cartoons. Words cannot even express how amateurish and badly drawn these cartoons are, with no sense of proportion, anatomy, lighting, or composition; some appear smudged or to have eraser marks on them, and others have no relevance to the text they are accompanying. And since they're on nearly every page, it's impossible to ignore them.

The exception is The Abominable Snowman, where the pictures are of much better quality (though still not exactly compelling--it seems that the illustrators only read the first two sentences of each page before illustrating it, so that an ending in which the protagonist is killed by a tiger is illustrated by a picture of him slapping mosquitos, for example, because that's what he was doing in the first sentence of the passage.)

Buy used copies of the original books, or choose something else to read. "The Abominable Snowman" is the only one of the set I intend to keep.

The text has been revised, though the revision is serviceable enough; but what's worse is that all of the illustrations have been replaced with really bad cartoons. The drawings in this book aren't quite as bad as those in some of the other rereleases (like Journey Under The Sea), but so many of them are amateurish and badly drawn that it's difficult to read the book without being distracted by them. Book Description

The Natural Republic tackles the most controversial of issues to bring out the answers of what has happened to the state of Muslims, while presenting a viable and realistic solution to move forward

After 1,400 years of the Quran's revelation, and after being role models for humankind with advancement in every aspect of life and science; Muslim nations have regressed to become weak, dysfunctional, and problematic.

The Natural Republic is written by Muslims, for Muslims, to bring about a proper understanding of the model of Islam and, through the implementation of the system and constitution outlined in this book, to return its followers to become productive societies and role models for humankind.

To many Muslims, what will be revealed in The Natural Republic may be disturbing to established beliefs and practices. However, unless we are willing to realize our mistakes and make amends, there will be no other way for us to move forward.

This is one of the most relevant books to Muslims today. Written in a succint and concise style, it constantly references the Holy Quran and illustrates just how much wonderful knowledge there is in the Quran and how we can apply it to our lives.

It should be read by every Muslim who wants to get a closer idea of what it is like to try to apply the Quran to one's life.

5 out of 5 stars An Eye Opener For All The Muslims Today..........2004-06-26

When I read this, I was immediately struck by the logic that was present therein, making me open my eyes to the fallacies, myths and excess baggage that we as muslims have carried with us, through the centuries...

This book succinctly and with great finesse pierces the heart of the matter, what is wrong with muslim society today...We can choose to read it and think, or dismiss it without a second thought and stick to what we've been forcefed as Islam through the so called clerics/leaders that rule the roost, and have done so for the longest time.

The way to freedom, is to break our shackles of ignorance, and only by reading/arming ourself with knowledge can we hope to counter the vicious circle of despondency that we now find ourselves in. We must find the strength to counter these allegations on us, we must find the courage to look at ourselves and see what is wrong and to try and correct it...

Islam has come under a very severe examination, especially now...Haven't you ever wondered why? Why are we here? Why are we in this position? What have we done to deserve this?

This book is for anyone who wants to know why..the why of muslims today, it is one of the most important books to come out in a long time that courageously defends God's Islam from the lies and the deceit...and tells us why, tells us how... to extricate and pick ourselves out of the mess that not just us, but whole centuries of ignorance have put us in.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read For All Muslims and Non-Muslims alike.......2004-06-25

The state of Muslims in the world has been deteriorating for more than a thousand years and it doesn't look like there's going to be much of a change. Much of this violence, intolerance, corruption and backwardness can be attributed to false beliefs and teachings within Islam. This has resulted in major problems not only for Muslims, but for the rest of the world. There are more than 1.3 billion Muslims in the world. Fighting is not the answer ... Education is.
The Natural Republic gives a solution for Muslims to advance into the 21st Century. It offers a solution that is so simple and provocative, yet so difficult and most probably disturbing to see. It attacks the core beliefs that Muslims have `set up' 200 years after prophet's death. Islam as it is now is nothing compared to what was revealed then. All we have, are books upon books of conjectures, and priests preaching anything but the word of God. It is interesting to note that Muslims are guilty of the same crime they accuse Christians and Jews of committing!
The Muslim movement of following God alone, i.e., of following His scripture and not man-made religions, is not new. Since the 19th century there have been people pointing to God's word and saying `no' to tradition and conjecture, but they were either executed, persecuted or suffered banishment from their countries. This happens even now. Apostates are stoned to death, totally contradicting the Quran which states - There is no compulsion in religion!(2:256) I think the time has come for the millions of Muslims out there to find out the truth for themselves, and topple down the illegitimate and self-appointed Sheiks, Imams and other `religious leaders'.
I will leave the chapters of this book to explain it self.

1 out of 5 stars Piece of Dog Doo.......2004-06-25

Salaam all. I live in the Persian Gulf and I purchased this book while visiting my family in the US. Over in the Gulf, the lack of good Islamic books is stifling. All of the stuff available over there is published in Saudi and written by misogynistic creeps who think that women shouldn't be allowed to drive, should rarely leave the home, and are emotionally like children. I am SOOO sick of this stuff that it really puts me off from reading anything written by someone with a big beard cuz I know that even if it is a book with nothing to do with women, the man who wrote it truly believes that women are lesser creations than men. I recently read the excellent book Progressive Muslims, a collection of essays compiled by Omid Safi. This is published in the US and though some of the people who contributed to it may have beards, I found it to be the most enlightening Islamically oriented book that I have read in YEARS. I have been on a book buying binge, collecting all kinds of "progressive" Islamic books, such as Believing Women in Islam by Asma Barlas (also highly recommended.)
The Natural Republic seemed attractive to me cuz it was written by people who run an organization called Progressive Muslims (see ProgressiveMuslims.org). But upon receiving and reading the book I discovered that it is not written by Muslims who want a scholarly, unbiased (read not misogynistic) modern interpretation of the Quran, along with a new scholarly look at our Sunnah (what I want to see happen to rid Muslims of unjust practices, especially towards women). It was written by some weirdos who want to THROW OUT condideration of the Hadeeth altogether!!! Astaghfirullah! They make these odd and contrived claims like HIJAB is a custom of bida' (innovation) adapted from rabbinical judaism, and HIJAB should not be observed by muslim women! They say that women should pray while menstruating, and that alcohol and pork products made from any part of the pig except the flesh/blood can be consumed! They say that the way Muslims do Salaat and fast is wrong, and offer a different way to do both of these things. I was utterly shocked and disgusted by this book's disregard for the Hadeeth/Sunnah. I know that there are problems with the autheticity of many hadeeth, and with the way hadeeth/Sunnah is currently interpreted/implimented. But to suggest THROWING IT AWAY??? I am not sure what to make of these guys. Allah knows best, but can they really be Muslims?
It seems that aside from a few good works, I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. Either the big beards are writing about ridiculous things such as the sins of taking one's wife to a restaurant (the waiter might see her unveiled face and fall in love with her, gasp!!!), or these weirdos who call themselves progressives are writing about how alcohol should be permitted for Muslims!!!! I am left confused, and still searching for material written by moderate and sensible religious God fearing Muslims.
In short, if you are a serious Muslim, don't buy this book. It is disturbing, and altogether a heretical.
      And Allah knows best.
