Wilderness and the American Mind, Fourth Edition
ASIN: 0805000844 |
Book Description
Over 634 million acres of the United States - nearly a million square miles - are federally owned. These American Lands is both a history and a celebration of that inheritance. First published in 1986, the book was hailed by Wallace Stegner as "the only indispensable narrative history of the public lands." This completely revised and updated edition is an unsurpassed resource for everyone who cares about, visits, or works with public land in the United States. With over 75 pages of new material, the volume covers:
- national parks
- national forests
- national resource lands
- wildlife refuges
- designated wildernesses
- wild and scenic rivers
- Alaska lands
- national trails
.
Each chapter outlines the history of the unit of public lands under discussion, clarifies the resource use and policy conflicts that are currently besetting it, and provides a detailed agenda of management, expansion, and preservation goals.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction to US public lands.......2007-06-12
This book summarizes the types of US public lands - - national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, BLM lands, scenic rivers and trails. Like many other books, it treats all of Alaska's public lands together, regardless of type (park, forest, refuge). Each chapter includes a historical overview, a discussion of current management, and a section of advocacy making recommendations on how to improve management. The writing is clear and effective, and this would be a good place for anyone interested in an introduction to these lands.
The book is organized in terms of preservation resources, and not chronologically or analytically. For example, the national parks come first. That makes sense in terms of preservation, since the parks are the crown jewels of public lands in the United States. But chronologically, the history of land acquisition in the United States - - which Zaslowsky and Watkins discuss under the Bureau of Land Management in Chapter 3 - - shaped the national parks in important ways. Since Congress didn't want to appropriate money for national parks, only those lands not yet taken - - the "worthless lands" in Alfred Runte's formulation - - were available for being reserved as parks. Presidential power to reserve national monuments (and originally national forests) by unilateral proclamation also make more sense if you put the land question first. In historical terms, then, the BLM chapter should have come first.
Why does this matter? Because the book's organization obscures problems of preservation by not telling the story right. Putting the parks first gives us a "heroic" narrative in which visionary people come up with ideas and then exercise leadership to carry them out. This tends to downplay the political interests behind these lands, and it makes BLM lands incomprehensible. What are these, and why are we preserving them? This heroic narrative also makes the challenges of the national forests less understandable.
The book also suffers from a largely unthinking conservationist bias. For example, they argue for retaining BLM lands in the public domain. Clearly, roadless lands could be designated wilderness, but why should the US keep degraded, overgrazed, roaded lands instead of selling them off to livestock producers? That question never enters the authors' minds. As long as conservationists don't confront that issue, many national forests and BLM lands will continue to provide huge subsidies to an inefficient and ecologically harmful livestock industry. Selling some lands off might, ironically, reduce the livestock impact because grazing is simply not an efficient use of these lands.
Of course, this kind of bias is shared by many people, and those people represent this book's core audience. It does what it seeks to do very effectively. It doesn't dig deep but provides a good introduction to the topic.

The Gun Digest Book of Trap & Skeet Shooting.......2007-05-07
I am not new to trap & skeet shooting, but a little rusty. This book has some very good information to help knock that rust off or get someone new to the sport started off on the right foot. It also has tips to help the experienced shooter improve their score and improve their gun maintenance.
The Bible for Recent Converts.......2007-02-25
This is exactly what I needed as a beginner. I'm soon outgrowing it, but could not have improved without it. It is also good for those who just wish to know about the sport.
This Gun Digest book covers all the basics of clay targets. All those things you must get right, or know about, in the beginning. I have increasing respect for it as I learn more
If you're new get this book.......2007-01-19
The information I was looking for was mainly for Skeet shooting. I found all the information on the different shotun sports to be very informative, especially for a novice. I would think that this book would be good for all new and many not so new shooters. Very good basic information. I can't wait for spring to try the information. Thanks to the authors.
Great sport........2007-01-07
This book provides all you need to know about technique and equipment. Good to read befor you go out and buy anything.
From a complete newbie's point of view.......2006-08-25
I found this book to be an excellent introduction to trap, skeet and sporting clays. The book is well laid out with clear illustrations. The writing style is friendly and easy to digest.
The book includes descriptions on many types of guns from the mundane to the exotic. While the attributes of the exotic are extolled, the author encourages his readers to get out there and give it a go with what you have.

Trap & Skeet Shooting.......2000-03-21
This splendid and remarkable book which I much long ago searched. And here is found. I much this is pleased. Your company much well knows its deal.
Excellent For a Beginner.......2000-01-26
I'm a beginner at trapshooting, and this book has been a great help. I have a much better grasp of shooting techniques and the various clay target games.
The writing is clear and engaging, the book layout is professional, the text is free of misspellings and grammatical errors (other gun books really fall down in that department), and the price is reasonable. The photos were especially helpful to me with regard to gun mount and shooting stance, and the chapter on gun fit is excellent. (Bob Brister's book also has a very useful discussion of stock dimensions and gun fit.)
Well worth the money!
Excellent for both novice and expert alike........1999-09-29
The author does an excelent job of covering all facets of the major shotgun events: Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, and both International trap and skeet. Covers tips for the beginners and for the expert as well. Needs a list of more "common" guns to supliment the listing of the "Top Guns" for each sport. Has improved scores of this reader.
An all purpose introduction to clay target shooting.......1998-12-22
If you want to buy just one book that covers the whole waterfront for trap, skeet and sporting clays, this is the book. It not only outlines the shooting tactics for each sport, but also provides very useful information on guns, ammunition and reloading. An excellent all-around indtroductory book.

Customer Reviews:
Good little book.......2004-12-11
This book is small and compact and had plenty of travel type words and phrases in it. Though some of the words and phrases are ones I would never use, I know that would be true of any phrase book. The good is it is small and easy to use. The bad is I didn't feel some of the phrases and words for traveling were that useful. For example "what's the next station?" if you can't figure that one out then you shouldn't be traveling. A better phrase would be "what's the next stop" then it would apply to all forms of travel, bus, train and metro and would be more helpful.

Customer Reviews:
Mostly Useful.......2000-12-02
I found the phrase book to be very handy in some languages, but in other languages, it didn't seem to be so thorough. I was in Central and Eastern Europe for four months and mostly used the book when I was eating out. It's a good source for vegetarians. I used t occasionally when asking directions as well and found my way around fairly well using the book. In less "touristy" areas the book didn't include as much information and I was left to my own devices.
Book Description
Another west coast classic is back in print with Harbour Publishing! In this prequel to the bestselling Saltwater Summer, renowned outdoor author Roderick Haig-Brown writes about two boys on the verge of manhood and their attempts to make their own living.
Don Morgan is sixteen and ready to earn his keep. His family expects him to take a job at the local fish cannery but Don thinks that if he spends the winter up in Starbuck Valley trapping marten, he could make enough money with the furs to buy his own salmon troller.
With his friend Tubby Miller, Don goes up into the wild, unexplored valley of the Shifting River to set out his trapline. The boys' cabin is gloomy, the trapping is poor and Tubby's pleasant disposition begins to sour. Things don't improve when Don begins to cultivate the friendship of their nearest neighbour, a notorious character named Lee Jetson. Lee knows how to trap marten and that is important to Don - he is willing to take chances to ensure the success of the winter's venture in spite of Tubby's obvious and irritating alarm.
With astute observation, Roderick Haig-Brown shows how Don's courage is tested and how his strength and judgement develop. This book combines a skilful novelist's storytelling gifts with a sensitive insight into the problems and point of view of a boy on the threshold of maturity.
Customer Reviews:
promising title.......2002-12-24
Upon seeing the title of this book, I automatically picked it up and bought it. Being a chemical free gardener in the midst of a drought, I ran home elated at my good fortune in finding the very book I was hoping for. I have to say that my heart sank when I realized this was not a book exclusively about lawns(that space in the landscape used for family play, visual respite and contrast, and in design, for "negative space"), and how to manage them through use of different grasses and ground covers, and xeriscaping etc. This book has some good information in it and I would recommend it to the homeowner wanting some good tips for their garden. I myself learned a new thing or maybe two. It is in no way the comprehensive treatise on the subject its enticing title suggests. I would recommend any of the Rodale books out there first, but feel that there can never be too many books dedicated to the promotion of Gardening in an environmentally responsible fashion, And this a fine addition to someone building their collection . Finally it has to be said that the gardens featured in this book are not beautifully designed master pieces, a pity really.
