Book Description
Are they needed? To be sure. The Darwinian industry, industrious though it is, has failed to provide texts of more than a handful of Darwin's books. If you want to know what Darwin said about barnacles (still an essential reference to cirripedists, apart from any historical importance) you are forced to search shelves, or wait while someone does it for you; some have been in print for a century; various reprints have appeared and since vanished."
Eric Korn,Times Literary Supplement
Charles Robert Darwin (1880-1882) has been widely recognized since his own time as one of the most influential writers in the history of Western thought. His books were widely read by specialists and the general public, and his influence had been extended by almost continuous public debate over the last 130 years. New York University Press' edition makes it possible for the first time to review Darwin's public literary output as a whole, plus his scientific journal articles, his private notebooks, and his correspondence.
This is the first complete edition containing all of Darwin's published books, featuring definitive texts recording original paginations with Darwin's indexes retained. All illustrations and plates are presented, inclucing 82 color plates of birds and mammals and several folding maps and plates. The set also features a general introduction and index, and textural introductions in each volume.

defies common sense.......2007-07-14
This book is totally boring and idiotic.
Only a fool would believe that our ancestors were gorillas. If you believe that we descended from gorillas and/or lizards, you probably also believe that The Earth revolves around the sun.
The Earth is stationary, just like it seems. The sun revolves around The Earth, just like the moon (except hotter). Use your noodle. It's common sense.
The Lord created The Earth (and the heavens) out of sawdust, clay, dinosaur bones, and mud. He did so in six days, and slept on the seventh day. This occurred 6000 or 7000 years ago. Evolution could not have occurred in such a short period of time.
Wake up, you've been duped.
Freed our minds for relativity.......2006-12-12
Just as "Origin of Species is misunderstood, I believe "Descent" to be also, although the latter is a more entertaining read. "Descent" fails to concentrate on man without deviating. It is a book of observations and study. It concentrates on how animal life, has, by sexual selection, brought forth the variety in the species we see today, through millions of years. Darwin covered his beloved pigeons in depth in "Origins" and continues at length on many other bird species in "Descent". I agree with him that all the different types of birds we see today probably came from one ancestor of the pigeon. This is called variation of kind. We see this in just about every living creature and flora. The problem arises when the next step is taken, the rise of one species turning into another (reptile to bird). Throughout the book Darwin does admit to this fact, but he still maintains that it must be, with much difficulty. He does hint to nature having some "power of thought", where does this come from? How does nature make these choices? Why did Darwin focus so on the black tribes: their practices, looks, sexuality, if he did not believe them a lower race? Of course he only hints at this, and his belief of evolving from apes is scant, but obvious. Does not the use of race to distinguish only separate? His theory on idiots as somehow lower is also disturbing. And what of the rudimentary parts and vestigial organs. As we progress in our scientific study we understand more on their uses, and there may be much we will never understand. In the end he gives a poor argument, and a convoluted book.
There is no doubt there is a tremendous amount of work that went into his book. It is a difficult and painful read, although there are many interesting and detailed observations. One does need to know his enemy. Darwin is not the originator of "evolution." There are many who came before him, since the dawn of time. He was influenced by numerous men of his time, some being more radical. Darwin was nothing new, he just maid it "hip." What he started has turned into the secular humanism the world has adopted. I don't think he meant for this disease to spread like it has. From his writings I understand him as an agnostic, but doubtful. I believed he struggled with the possibly of a deist. It is safe to say it was his only ambition till his dying day to prove "evolution" as proof of our existence. What of the missing fossil record?, he new they would be found. He was a confusing man.
150 years later and there still has been no intermediate fossils found to prove the case. In fact we are discovering more that validates creation.
Why don't we see a scale or a feather erupt occasionally on man? Is it because it is not in our DNA, and never was?
The theory of evolution caused Darwin to loose his faith and his experience has been repeated in countless lives. Evolution is an acid that eats away at the mind, a cancer.
One only needs to open the pages to Michael Behe's book, "Darwin's Black Box", to understand the futility of the evolutionary theory. The engines of life at the molecular level are so complex that there leaves no other possibility than a creator of the universe. There should be no excuse.
Wish you well
Scott
Masterpiece or wonder?.......2004-07-30
While Darwin's theory of natural selection was accepted in the 1930s, Darwin's theory of sexual selection remains controversial. In Ernst Mayr's recent What is Evolution? Darwin's theory of sexual selection receives about two paragraphs. By comparison, Darwin considered sexual selection important enough to receive an equal number of pages as he devoted to his theory of natural selection. 130 years later, he's still probably the only evolutionary theorist to make this judgement. Equally, one must wonder that if Darwin had not come up with the idea of sexual selection, would anyone else have done so?
This book is not merely revolutionary on a theoretical basis, but also in its thoughts on animals - including humans. 100 years before Jane Goodall `discovers' chimpanzees using tools, Darwin devotes more than a page to animals using tools. More than 110 years before vets begin to give dogs prozac, Darwin argues that dogs have a sense of humour. His views on animals raises them higher than any modern theorist: his views on humans lowers them to where they are - animals, and thus the title.
130 years later, this book is still radical. It is probably the most significant alteration to our understanding of ourselves since Copernicus. Its contents, with its stark views on human violence, continues to make aetheists uneasy. The book is very readable, and Darwin's clarity, sincerity and incisiveness places him above all modern writers. Revolutionary, thoughtful, and warm, it remains more a wonder than a masterpiece.
Thought police.......2003-10-18
Darwin operated in a thought world completely unacceptable to the "politically correct" speech/thought codes found on most college/university campuses today. If one subscribes to Darwinian or neo-Darwinian ideas, one has to wonder what new "great ideas" we are missing out on today, now that the politically correct thought police have taken over the media, education, and popular entertainment establishments--effictively suppressing the sort of thought that nurtured Darwin's "scientific" speculations.
True Darwinism.......2002-11-17
In the beginning of the book, you will find a sort of definition of Natural Selection, which is about all the space Darwin spends on formulating his hypothesis.
"Do the races or species of men, whichever term may be applied, encroach on and replace one another, so that some finally become extinct? We shall see that all these questions, as indeed is obvious in respect to most of them, must be answered in the affirmative, in the same manner as with the lower animals."
On about 15 occasions later in the book he writes about how this selective encroachment of human races occurs, most signicicantly when writing that:
"Extinction follows chiefly from the competition of tribe with tribe, and race with race. (.....) and when of two adjoining tribes one becomes less numerous and less powerful than the other, the contest is soon settled by war, slaughter, cannibalism, slavery, and absorption."
Racial and tribal genocide is the chief operator in shaping humans as they are today from an apelike progenitor, according to Darwin.
This work is not up to scratch compared to classics of biological science from the same timeperiod, such as Mendel's "Versuche". This work is more appropiately read together with Haecekel's "Natural Creation History" (Naturliche Schopfungsgeschichte), which Darwin profusely praises in the beginning of his book.
Both these works from Haeckel and Darwin carry decidedly racist and generally judgemental content. Generally judgemental in continuously talking about higher and lower in an expressely moral way. For instance Darwin finds it neccessary to assert what the highest state of morality is for a person, and elsewhere he urges people in any way "inferior" not to marry.
The science is shoddy, especially the formulation is seriously lacking. The moral judgementalism, which makes up a great deal of the book, is generally coarse and without significant emotion showing through.

Sexual Selection and the Descent of Man.......2006-02-19
Just over one hundred years ago Charles Darwin, in The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex(1871), developed remarkably accurate conclusions about man's ancestry, based on a review of general comparative anatomy and psychology in which he regarded sexual selection as a necessary part of the evolutionary process. But the attention of biologists turned to the more general concept of natural selection, in which sexual selection plays a complex role that has been little understood. This centenial volume significantly broadens the scope of modern evolutionary biology by looking again at this important and long neglected concept of great importance.
In the book - the first full discussion of sexual selection since 1871 - leading biologists bring modern genetic theory and behavior observation to bear on the subject. The distinguished authors consider many aspects of sexual selection in many species, including man, within the context of comtemporary evolutionary research. The result is a remarkably original and well-rounded view of the whole concept that will be invaluable especially to students of evolution and human sexual behavior. The lucid authority of the contributors and the importance of the top will interest all who share in man's perenial fascination with his own history.

Book Description
The most accessible edition ever published of DarwinÂ's incendiary classic, edited by Âas fine a science essayist as we have (New York Times)
The Descent of Man, DarwinÂ's second landmark work on evolutionary theory (following The Origin of the Species), marked a turning point in the history of science with its modern vision of human nature as the product of evolution. Darwin argued that the noblest features of humans, such as language and morality, were the result of the same natural processes that produced iris petals and scorpion tails.
To convey the revolutionary importance of this groundbreaking book, renowned evolutionary science writer Carl Zimmer edited this special abridged editionÂmade up of nine excerpts, each one representing one of DarwinÂ's major themesÂand wrote illuminating introductions to each section, as well as an overall introduction. Zimmer brilliantly places DarwinÂ's basic ideas in the context of the current understanding of human nature and twenty-first-century DNA research. By accessibly presenting DarwinÂ's thinking to a modern readership, Zimmer eloquently demonstrates DarwinÂ's ever-increasing relevance and amazing scientific insight.

Rosehips, rich in vitamin C, will remedy scurvy. Poplar, red cedar, elm, and willow are preferable for friction fires. If stuck on a flat, shelterless desert, dig a shallow pit (east-west) to lie in; even a few feet can result in a 100-degree temperature change. This is the sort of information outdoor enthusiasts will find in Bradford Angier's classic guide to survival in the wilderness. Divided into four parts (sustenance, warmth, orientation, safety), How To Stay Alive in the Woods is packed with woodcraft tips and age-old tricks--and it's packable as well, so don't leave home without it.
Book Description
HOW TO STAY ALIVE IN THE WOODS is a practical, readable-and potentially indispensable-manual for anyone venturing into the great outdoors.
Broken down into four essential sections, Sustenance, Warmth, Orientation and Safety, this enlightening guide reveals how to catch game without a gun, what plants to eat (full-color illustrations of these make identification simple), how to build a warm shelter, make clothing, protect yourself and signal for help. Detailed illustrations and expanded instructions, newly commissioned for this deluxe edition, offer crucial information at a glance, making How to Stay Alive in the Woods truly a lifesaver. A sturdy, durable rubber cover with Dayglo type protects this must-have from the elements.

Good book?!?.......2007-10-11
I bought this to help me get ready for my first planned camping/backpacking trip incase something was to go wrong I would like to say it is an older printed book but is very helpful. I aint a city feller and have some exsperince in the whole outdoors stuff, but I wanted this to give me some ideas incase something went wrong and I had to try and survive out there alone or with a hurt friend maybe and it is great for what I neede it for I was exspecting alittle morer but it is a paperback andwith that in mind I cant ask much more from it. I now have an idea of how to capture game with several different types of traps and also shelters out the wazzuh. I am going to find a book about the different types of plants and vegitation that grows arounfd my home so I can know what to look for and want poision myself. As I read this I wondered if the guys on the Discovery channel read these books before they get started because if you have watched any of them (Surviorman and etc.)there are so many of the thing they say do and build in this book its unreal, anyway I like the book and it has alot of helpful ideas if you are really wanting to be prepared for anything that could happen.
A fun and handsome book to have around, great to read through or just occaisionally reference........2007-09-08
Like most people who have read this book, I received it as a gift. Perhaps some innate mountain man spirit or boy scout tendencies of mine made somebody think this was an appropriate present to give me around the holidays. Anyways, I appreciated the gift and have only recently gotten around to reading and reviewing it. In this edition of the book the cover is bound in olive drab, grip rubber, not unlike a basketball. This unique cover material makes the book a handsome and manly looking piece of literature if there ever was one.
So what about the content? Well, as a former soldier, I found much of the material consistent with standard military survival manuals, particularly when it comes to woodland survival. The language of the writing is classic 1950's American English, not too removed from those elitist publications put out by the East Coast gentry who cranked out books on every subject following the war. It is, however, not pretentious or condescending, Bradford Angier genuinely has written a book he hopes will assist the stranded, starvation-bound "Average Joe American (or Canadian)."
A fun and attractive book to read with at least a little insight into roughing it, either deliberately or not.

Survive Anything.......2007-04-12
You won't believe the skills you'll pick up from this handbook on survival in the wild. You'll be able to start a fire with only a piece of ice, among other tricks.
This is a great book.......2007-01-10
I really enjoyed this book. Yes, it is a little outdated, but the ideas are just as valid today. This is written by a writer who lived off the land and knew exactly how to survive in situations that others would give up on. The fact that this was written before the GPS came around doesn't make it any less valuable a resource.
How on earth do you start a fire with only a piece of ice? Read the book! (And yes, I really don't think I could start such a fire even with the book in front of me, but it's nice to know that it is possible...)
How do you create a fish trap out of sticks? How do you create a snare? How do you find civilization if you are lost? How do you find water? What type of things do you need to bring with you on camping trips? What is safe to eat, and what is not? These types of things are all answered inside.
I've read it cover to cover several times and I believe it is the perfect type of book to give to an outdoorsman or to keep down at a cabin for a little light winter reading...
Highly Recommended!
Its ok but i would not recomend it.......2006-04-05
This book was ok but I would not recomend it.Bradford Angeir is not that great of a writer, so there are many parts that are hard to understand. But if you have time on your hands and want to know about the baics of wilderness survival it is preaty good.

Not Best Of Breed At All.......2005-01-06
I'm just back from three weeks in Venice. Because I'm obsessive, I ended up taking along four maps: Street Smart, Lonely Planet, National Geographic, and the Rough Guide map. I thought I'd share my experiences.
The Rough Guide map ended up being my favorite. It's different than the other maps: larger, easier to read, printed on waterproof "plastic paper". It's by far the best if you're in a twisty off-the-beaten-path place, if you're looking for a particular address, or if you're trying to read it at night. If you only want to take one map, I recommend the Rough Guide map.
The issue with the Rough Guide map is, it's larger than the others. Sometimes a smaller map is easier to carry around, and sometimes it's easier to see the "big picture" with a smaller map. I found myself carrying two maps all the time.
In the small map category, I found that the National Geographic "Destination Map" for Venice is much more useful than the Lonely Planet map. It is more accurate. It covers the whole city. It is easier to read. It has a better vaporetto map. If you want a smaller "hard-plastic" map, I suggest that you buy the National Geographic map instead of Lonely Planet.
Handy but Superficial.......2004-08-04
This map is attractive and compact, and is plasticized so it should endure a lot of rough treatment on a trip. It includes a diagram of the vaporetto (water bus) routes that would be more helpful if it were larger. The map covers the main tourist areas in reasonable detail, but it is of no use for one wishing to explore the less beaten paths. In short, it's pretty, but incomplete.

Never mind that Addie Clawson didn't own a car. She didn't even know how to drive one when the U.S. Postal Service hired her to deliver the mail through the mountains in Boone, North Carolina. That was on Friday. By Monday, she had a plan. Never mind that in 1936 only men delivered the mail, and women didn't do that sort of work. Never mind that the rough roads, blizzards, and floods made the life of rural mail carriers difficult. Against all odds, Miss Addie was determined to deliver the mail. For 30 years, that's just what she did. Here is the story of one pioneering woman's courage, dedication, and kindness.

Very interesting short story. Great for my lady mail route carrier. She loved it.
Addie Clawson, Appalachian Mail Carrier.......2004-11-14
This is a wonderful book. It is the story of Addie Clawson, who became the first female mail carrier in this rural area.
It tells of the struggles with the rugged winters and the doubts of many of the people who thought that a women just could not handle this type of a job. After having gone to school at Appalachian State University and traveled this area on my job I can attest to the rugged conditions. The book is written for children (grades 4-5) but adults will enjoy this book too.

Book Description
"If you had a daughter in those vulnerable years between 12 and 30, what would you tell her about men?" This was the question asked to people all over the country, and the responses received make up the text in A Letter to Our Daughters About Men. What the respondents have shared will help women assess themselves, appreciate themselves, and take control of their lives. This book will encourage you to think about who you are, to think about how you want to be treated, and to think about the power you have to create a good life for yourself.
Customer Reviews:
Thought provoking for the young and more seasoned ladies.......2006-08-30
Thought provoking -- even for those women who think they already know most of the answers. I loved reading the different perspectives on a variety of topics, and that those perspectives came from both women and men. I have purchased several more copies to give to my teenaged nieces. I hope this will encourage them to focus more on themselves as they develop into young women.
You've got to read this book!!!!.......2006-04-29
This book was wonderful! For those of us that do not have brothers to talk to, this book was very insightful because it gave me a true persepctive of what men really think and how they feel about women. In fact I had my niece who was in an unhealthy relationship read it and after that she left him!!
I bought 10 copies for my friends.
A Journey through Expectations and Reality.......2006-04-03
"In this book, girls and women are challenged to disregard destructive messages and to think for themselves. They are also challenged to define themselves positively, and to become the best people they can possibly be." ~Julia A. Davis
Julia A. Davis' writing is infused with love and wisdom. This is a treasure of writing expressing her heartfelt concern for women who will be happier when they take control of their lives. The introduction is a beautiful letter to daughters and then topics of high interest, challenges and stories follow. Inspirational quotes, stunning wisdom and revelations of clarity introduce young women to positive thought patterns.
"I am what I aspire to be."
Revelations in Section 2 explore listening to those who care about women. Renee, a 26-year old remembers her mother's wisdom. Brad gives examples of how he shares his wisdom with his daughter. These are beautiful moments on which to reflect. It is enjoyable to see how we all view the important women in our lives.
How do you want to treat others and how do you want them to treat you?
This is highly significant and the list of "you will know a person is your friend if..." is very revealing. The checklist to find out if a person loves you is an excellent way to understand the difference between hope and reality.
"If you think about these questions and answer them honestly, you will know whether or not you are loved by the man with whom you are involved." ~pg. 105
Intimacy, Sex and Commitment are discussed in a realistic light and encourage women to think beyond "feeling in love" and ponder the consequences of action, physically and emotionally.
This is a beautiful book because it deals with every major issue women have to deal with in regards to their self-esteem and relationship issues. From experience, we women heading towards forty realize that self-esteem issues can make or break a life and maintaining a high self-esteem is essential to your very existence.
Many sections of this book explain how to bounce back from painful consequence and show you the way to not only regain self-esteem but how you can build a firm foundation for future success. Julia A. Davis has written a beautiful message for the women of the world that will make their lives more peaceful emotionally so they can handle all the responsibilities of life with a renewed sense of confidence.

Book Description
"I love your verse with all my heart, dear Miss Barrett . . . and I love you too," Robert Browning wrote in January 1845, thus initiating the most celebrated literary correspondence of the nineteenth century. During their courtship, Elizabeth privately wrote a series of forty-four sonnets to Robert, which she disclosed to no one -- not even to him -- until three years after their marriage. The poems were later collected in a volume entitled Sonnets form the Portuguese. In this elegant new edition, the poems are accompanied by relevant excerpts from Elizabeth and Robert's love letters. With an introduction by biographer Julia Markus, this volume will be a valued resource for the poetry scholar and those wanting wise and lyrical guidance in matters of love.

For Romantics Only.......2006-10-12
This sonnet sequence could be rather boring to the untrained eye. As an English major, I was able to appreciate Browning's strict following of the rules for sonnets (which are extremely hard to write well and forced me to give this book an extra star) and her diction. The history of the sonnet sequence is more interesting than the sonnets themselves. Yet there are quite a few poems that make you feel all gushy inside and make you want to go fall in love!
A Wonderful Book of Poetry!.......2003-12-05
This is one of my sister's favorite books of poetry. Elizabeth Barret Browning delivers fluent beautiful poems. The English Love poetry is very well done. The history behind the title is that her husband's nickname for her was "my little Portugese"... this was a book of love poems for her husband, therefore called, "Sonnets from the Portugese"... isn't that sweet. Well... enjoy!

Oh, Come and See What You Can Hear!.......2000-06-28
Primitive and patriotic, sentimental and silly, and lacking in grammar, rhythm, and rhyme, the work of "the Sweet Singer of Michigan" is often laugh-out-loud funny. Julia Moore's most famous couplet runs: "Come all you people from far and near,/ Oh, come and see what you can hear." Little of her work ever rises above that level-- but what makes this homespun Homer especially thrilling is she's always sincere, oblivious to her lack of talent. She's like a found-object guest on the Letterman show, or a nineteenth-century Ed Wood: she's the only one who isn't in on the joke she's telling herself. Most of Moore's poems are occasional pieces inspired by newspaper articles on subjects as diverse as politics, plagues, and temperance, and many are set to popular ballads of the day. Her greatest inspiration, however, came from the obituary pages. Even among Victorians she is notable for the degree to which she could get worked up over the death of a total stranger. Her influence was vast. Mark Twain parodied her loopy sentimentality; Ogden Nash imitated her penchant for forced rhymes and missed beats. The difference is that Twain and Nash intended their comic effects: poor Julia's were accidental, and she was understandably upset when at long last she realized people were laughing at her. "Like Herman Melville," one critic observed in 1928, Moore retreated into silence for many years after reading too many unflattering reviews. All praise is due Thomas Riedlinger for preserving Moore's work for a new generation of readers. It's awful-- in every sense of the word.

Refreshing, unjaded views of life.......2007-03-04
This anthology of short essays and poems is refreshing in its uninhibited look into the hearts of a diverse group of women writers. From the young to the young-only-in-spirit, this group provides a surprisingly fresh, intimate glimpse into the past and present lives of these Washington women. In particular, Julia Weller's ability to engross the reader so quickly makes one hope that she soon will write a full-length book. I wanted each short gem to go on for longer and was quite bereft when I came to the final page.
The Best Short Story/Essay Collection I've Ever Read!!!!.......2007-02-20
I was given this book as a gift last month and love it! The topics it covers are very diverse, so I think there is something for everyone here: sister-to-sister relationships, mothers, travel, race relations and Alzheimer's are just a few. The fact that these pieces were written by women who, by and large, work in professions other than writing during the week makes the impeccable writing in this book all the more astounding. Some of my favorites: My Mother's Wings, about a young Bulgarian immigrant who becomes a sky writer, and Banished Memories, about a little girl whose strange, often cruel, family dynamics baffle and eventually embolden her to demystify her own past.
Five stars for the whole anthology.
