The Resurgence of the Real is a fascinating proposal for correcting the ills of contemporary society. On the one hand, it offers an eloquent critique of modernity's tendency toward scientism and industrialism at the expense of holistic environmentalism. On the other hand, the distinction drawn between modernism and postmodernism turns out to be simplistic and largely illusory, for although Charlene Spretnak identifies her postmodernism as also "pre-modern," its origins and articulation are part and parcel of the modernist project. Still, her call to recover awareness of our context, our relationships to others and to our environment, is not only valid but necessary to our survival.

Book Description

In this insightful, beautifully written work, one of our most important feminist ecological thinkers argues that an "ecological postmodern" ethos has been lately emerging. Reflecting on the roots of modernity in Renaissance humanism, the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment, Spretnak considers the modern, mechanistic worldview with Homo economicus at its center. She asserts that the ideologies of modernity have devalued "the knowing body, the creative cosmos, and the complex sense of place." Yet the author argues persuasively that the modern crisis is being challenged by an impressive network of corrective efforts today. In addition, Spretnak reframes "the other history" of the modern era with exceptional clarity: the ecospiritual lineage of movements that resisted the corrosive effects of the industrialized modern world, including the Arts and Crafts movement, Modernist writers and artists who rejected the "machine aesthetic" after World War One, and grassroots movements today that are forging a new politics of local and regional revitalization. Both a sharp critique and a graceful performance of the art of the possible, The Resurgence of the Real changes the way we think about living in the modern world.

3 out of 5 stars Slightly flawed.......2001-02-07

There's some wonderful stuff here-esp. the material on William Morris and John Ruskin and the neo-Utopian view at the end. I've given the book to several friends, but always with this caveat: don't trust the material on witch burnings. She's bought into what are apparently terribly exaggerated figures on the numbers of victims, which are based on faulty research. Contemporary researchers put the number at 50,000 to 100K rather than the millions cited here. And one was too many, IMO. See WITCH: THE WILD RIDE FROM WICKED TO WICCA by Candace Savage for a more contemporary view.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful & Elegant Critique of the Post-Modern Mystique!.......2000-06-23

In "Resurgence of the Real", Author Charlene Spretnak takes accurate aim at the pandemic, negative and deadening global aspects of the hyper-rationalized social, economic, and political environment of the postindustrial world, diagnosing its ills, and proposing a quite realistic, attainable, and more organic alternative to our misguided ways. In this elegantly written and argued neo-Luddite thesis, Spretnak passionately speaks on behalf of a more enlightened post modern ecology that actively eschews the deadening embrace of 20th century scientism and technological industrialism and recognizes the basic human connection to nature and the environment.

This is a book with a mission and a message. On the one hand, she offers an impressive critique of how our blind fascination with rationalism, science, and technological innovation has strangled out of consciousness any appreciation or awareness of the natural world around us, and has led us into a ritual denial of our fundamental connection to nature. On the other hand, showing how illusory and simplistic our intellectual categories seem to be, she argues for a recovery effort in order to actively regain our individual and collective awareness of our natural context, our relationships to other human beings, and to our basic grounding in the ecology of the real world around us.

But the leap toward such critical awareness eludes many of our contemporaries, who are locked into such a modernistic, mechanistic and rational worldview that they tend to view themselves as bio-machines requiring external interventions when malfunctioning. Every thing about our artificially created and sustained human environment holds us within this kind of faulty and dangerous world-view. Instead, she argues, we need to recognize that we are self-correcting energy systems operating within nature, which she defines as a dynamic and self-regulating cosmos. This is heady and quite intellectually stimulating stuff, and requires a close reading and a requisite ability to think, as they say, "outside the box" of conventional thought.

The author faces the issues of our time with eloquence, clarity, and a keen intellectual acumen. The book is obviously written with great care, passion, and unimpeachable intellectual clarity. Spretnak offers a stinging and accurate diagnosis of what has gone wrong in the post-modern world, and presents, with great lucidity and careful thought, a look at the emerging postmodern ecological world-view we need to overcome the ecological, social, and political problems confronting us. This is a very special, passionate, and wonderful book, and is one offering hope for the future. I hope you enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Philosophical.......2000-06-15

Humanity is so ready for this groundbreaking book!

I heard Charlene Spretnak on the radio and rushed to buy this book.

Spretnak goes beyond our arbitrary ways of categorizing the world and its inhabitants, offers hope for the environment, for humankind, for our spirit. Forget right and left, modern and postmodern, communist and capitalist, all the usual labeling. Spretnak explores what's wrong with modernity, from its beginnings in the age of Renaissance humanism! She writes eloquently of the suicidal rush to embrace technology at all costs.

Excellent book for any environmentalist, anyone with a spiritual or religious inclination, any art history student, any political scientist.

5 out of 5 stars perspective-altering masterpiece..........2000-04-03

Here is easily the most fascinating, thought-provoking book I've ever read. Far too rarely do we examine those reasons we should feel jusitified in our disillusionment, instead opting to revel in it.

I can't count the number of times I had to re-read a paragraph or page to fully comprehend Spretnak's complex argument. I can't count the number of times I rushed out to read passages aloud to my brother.

I'd love to teach this book one day.

    Book Description

Reclaiming the Land brings together original investigations of the new generation of rural social movements in Asia, Latin America and Africa. Dispossessed peasants and unemployed workers of diverse political and ideological orientation have used land occupations and other tactics systematically to confront the neoliberal state. This book provides both national and micro-level case studies of these movements. They seek to identify their social composition, strategies, tactics, and ideologies; to assess their relations with other social actors, including political parties, urban social movements, and international aid agencies and other institutions; and to examine more closely their most common tactic, the land occupation, as well as the responses of governments and landowners.

I remember learning basketball as a kid...watching it on TV was boring, one team scored, the other scored and not much looked different.

Then I learned about offense and defense and it all changed...became a lot more enjoyable and to this day I can watch a game and get involved.

Well, I'm learning Hockey now...as an adult. I don't have coaches around me to teach me...this book gives a good insight on what to look out for in a game...Offense and defense.

After one reading I went to a game....and it was a different experience. More enjoyable...a deeper connection with the game.

I didn't know exactly what was happeneing on the ice, but knew the basics and was able to more fully follow what the guys were trying to do.

I look forward to a few more readings through this book...and getting ready to watch the playoffs this year....with a more tuned in eye.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice layout.......2007-01-10

The book is layed out well, and the drills are helpful. My only disappointment was that the book is taylored to older kids who can more readily grasp the basic concepts. Most of the book is too advanced for Mites and squirts.

4 out of 5 stars A good resource for more advanced teams.......2004-12-25

A good resource for an inexperienced coach to find the info needed to introduce the X's and O's to a house Pee Wee team. Very helpfull

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Coach's Manual.......2001-12-08

My son is the head coach of a Tier 1 girls hockey team. This manual has been invaluable for developing plays, systems and a players manual. I highly recommend this to any serious coach.

                    4 out of 5 stars A good book.......1999-10-25

Over-all this was an easy to read and understand book. The special teams aspect of the book lack 5-3's on the power plays and penality killing.

                        Book Description

An all-new novel based on the television series by Winnie Holzman.

Some things never change... some things do.

It's proving to be a long, hot summer for Angela Chase and her friends. Angela's back with Jordan -- sort of -- and working at her dad's restaurant. Brian's still in love with Angela, still searching for Delia Fisher, and mesmerized by an older woman. Rickie's in love, too, for the very first time. Sharon breaks her vow to ditch Kyle and suffers the consequences. Rayanne gets hired and fired from a series of crazy jobs -- but she has something a lot more important on her mind. This summer seems interminable. Or maybe terminal...

                        2 out of 5 stars What a dissapointment.......2004-10-26

After recently re-discovering My So-Called life on Noggin, and then finding out there was a book that followed the characters after the series ended, I was very excited to find it. I immediately searched for the book everywhere, couldn't find it, as it is now out of print. I finally found it at one of my local libraries, and read the entire book in a few hours.

The book was NOTHING like the show. True, the same characters are there, but there is no real life to the book. Angela now seems shallow and even flaky at times. There was not the same depth to any of the characters, or the entire story, as there was in the show.

To me, the ending left me wondering why I wasted my time. I read the book, thinking the whole time that something interesting would happen. The only thing interesting was with Brian. In fact, I feel like most of the book focused on him more than anyone.

All in all, I feel like after reading the book, it took me no farther than the last episode of the series did. Even if you are a huge MSCL fan, I wouldn't bother.

3 out of 5 stars My So Called Life Goes On.......2003-10-08

My so called life goes on is a very entertaining book but at times I felt a loss between the characters now and the characters that I fell in love with in the series. Chaterine Clark did not capture the essence of Angela which was most disappointing but there were other things in the book that did not add up either. Like Jordan never called Brian by his real name always by brain and Jordan would never beg anyone to help him... unless it was Angela and about sex!!! Also the route that the characters took were a total 90 degree switch from the series. I mean I was a fan of the show when it first aired back in 94 and I have recently watched the whole series on dvd and when I watched the characters on screen it was almost as if I had found a peice of my heart that had been missing for quite awhile. I think it was more about how Winnie Holzman created the characters and they were so relatable and the things in there series were so real that it was easy to watch and not feel apart from yourself but it was like you could become apart of the show. I enjoyed the book emensly and I know that the book was not like the show because it did not come the heart of the writers but I really did enjoy it and if you have an open mind and just enjoy reading about the characters you will to. BTW the ending was such an unexpecting thing but I have to say that I did enjoy the ending!!!

                        4 out of 5 stars A Satisfying Wrap-up to the series.......2003-08-11

I'm still uncertain as to why most reviews have been negative about this book.

This book doesn't hold a candle to the series, true. But it's like comparing the metaphorical apples and oranges. The show had brilliant performances,as well as lighting, sound and other visual aspects to bring its story to life. The book has only text; but I think Clark has done a commendable job of envisioning the series through just text.

All of the main characters and many of the supporting characters have moments that fit in nicely with the overall summer story, particularly Brian Krakow. (And let me tell you: If you were heartbroken with the final episode of the series, read the book and see Brian finally get a bone tossed his way.) Everyone gets a piece of the pie, but what's nice is that we get to hear their own individual voice as well. The tv show took an overwhelmingly subjective viewpoint from Angela, while this books delves into all of the kids' minds. Unfortunately the one downfall of the book is that there's not much attention on Patty or Graham, so those looking to see the Chase parental units at work will be starved. But that's ok, because this is about the kids' summer.

I'm also at a loss as to how anyone can compare this with the first book Catherine Clark wrote about the MSCL characters, as the first book is essentially a novelization of the series. hmmm...

But anwyay, if you were angered and unsatisfied at the abrupt end of the show, then I recommend reading the book to provide a more adequate closure. (And if you really, really, REALLY want to see Brian Krakow shine!) :)

3 out of 5 stars it's not as bad as they say!.......2000-02-26

I think Catherine Clark did a good job creating a summer for the MSCL characters, and I actually found what she came up with pretty believable. After all, I think it makes perfect sense that Angela would work at her dad's restaurant, Rayanne would not be able to hold down one steady job, and Sharon would STILL sleep with Kyle, even after promising herself she wouldn't. Okay, so what happens with Brian is a little out there (I won't give it away!) but come on, the poor guy deserves some adventure. All in all, I enjoyed this continuation for the MSCL crew.

                        1 out of 5 stars I am THOUGHROUGHLY disgusted.......2000-01-07

I am one of MSCL's biggest fans, and this book completely strays from Angela's complex, almost contridictory yet endearing thoughts. For instance, read the excerpt from the book, Angela would NEVER "rev the engine and honk as she backed out of the driveway" or try to run over Brian Krakow shouting "JEALOUS! " The author would have done better basing the story on MSCL and creating new characters altogether. However if you dearly miss the show and wouldn't mind the dramatic mutation, then it wouldn't be so terrible. But if you simply fell in love with the characters, don't read it, it'll break your heart.
