Book Description
In The Octopus and the Orangutan, Eugene Linden takes readers on another unforgettable journey into the minds and hearts of animals.
The Parrot's Lament, his acclaimed previous book, featured extraordinary true stories of animal consciousness and intelligence. Linden's latest book goes beyond our everyday encounters with animals at home and in the zoo in a wide-ranging collection of real-life anecdotes that offer further compelling evidence of their higher mental capabilities and their awareness of the needs and feelings of others.
The Octopus and the Orangutan reveals extraordinary new details about animals introduced in The Parrot's Lament, and then finds intelligent behavior in surprising new places, ranging from the octopus's garden to the crow's nest. Amazing feats of stealth, deception, and larceny accompany unexpected acts of kindness and friendship. Animals show they are cagey bargainers and tough negotiators both with their human keepers and with one another. The animals themselves are our guides in this fresh look at the question of animal intelligence.
From the beloved pets we think we know to the remarkable survival skills of creatures in the wild, Eugene Linden once again shares his wonder and joy at the infinite variety of animal behavior that continues to inform, amaze, and touch us all.

Who'd a thunk it!.......2006-11-14
Our local newspaper carried a story about octopi and their intelligence and referenced this book. The story intrigued me because I'd never read anywhere that creatures like octopi had much intelligence. Of course, I had to buy the book! And what a book it is! Well written, funny, and very enjoyable, it's also very easy to understand. I particularly like the way it shows that octopi not only display intelligence but a sense of humor as well. Orangutans, of course, are well-known for their intelligence; but I'd never dreamed just how smart these animals really are. If only I could get over their creepy looks...
Animal Intelligence.......2006-02-15
People who enjoy thinking about evolution, artificial and natural intelligence, and consciousness will want to read this book. It is a quick read worth the price.
Intriguing animal tales.......2005-01-08
What an entertaining and interesting read. I totally adored his "The Parrot's Lament" and was really excited to learn he had a new book. Eugene Linden presents some well studied proposals, with lots of information, in a clear format, and he is always careful to point out where the "scientific community" currently stands on each issue discussed. The dialogue surrounding animal intelligence is an intriguing one, and it's nice to see things from a non-scientist position...it is still well-informed, but he feels more free to use anecdotes. Still, each anecdote is presented on its own, not as supporting data, but as themselves...interesting moments that perhaps offer a glimpse not seen in many science journals. Plus, Orangutans are totally awesome.
comprehensive, entertaining, intriguing.......2004-11-09
it doesn't matter that linden's discussion on animal behaviour isn't rocket science, as behavioural studies often seem to be thought.
the beauty about linden's writings is that they come from a prespective innate in every humanbeing - simple/fundamental, unending questioning. his questions and case studies can be appreciated in simplicity. which leads to the question then, of why humans have made the study and evaluation of animal behaviour and intelligence so complicated, tenuous and subjective. does it matter if intelligence is ingrained in instinct or conjured through an anylytical mind?
"The universe is simple at its foundation."
And i believe that's where linden is with his book. throughly entertaining and easy to read, this book can be appreciated by any age and any background. any "thicker" and it'd be a scientific reference book that'd bore or overwhelm most audiences.
Several of his stories are briefs of pending behavioural/intelligence studies in universities, which is interesting to the general public because most of the results of such studies only ever turn up in scientific journals full or jargon and mathematical symbols. he also includes letters of intrigue from readers of his first book The Parrots Lament.
Read this book if you're looking to be intrigued and quirked.
Transends True Tales.......2004-08-10
I grabbed this book looking for a light, entertaining read based on the cute cover and the phrase "true tales." And it was. However, I was delighted to discover the author transcends cute-animal-story mode to craft a lively discussion for rethinking how we judge intelligence. Of particular delight, to me, was the author's obvious joyful and touching regard for animals, while at the same time maintaining judicious restraint in validating stories and their meanings. This book reminds me of Thai food: A complex dance of flavors that somehow fuse into a satisfying meal. Savor.

Published under the pennants of the American Sailing Association and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Sailing Fundamentals is an excellent guide for novice sailors ready to get their feet wet. This comprehensive manual helps beginners learn basic sailing and coastal cruising with step-by-step instructions for everything from hoisting the sail to docking. Written with clear prose by Gary Jobson--tactician aboard the 1977 America's Cup-winning Courageous--Sailing Fundamentals is specially designed to help sailors qualify for ASA certification--essential if you wish to charter a boat.
Necessary reading for novice sailors--and an excellent reference for intermediate to advanced sailors. --M. Stein
Book Description
Written by America's foremost instructional authority, the new edition of Sailing Fundamentals combines the training programs of the American Sailing Association and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. The official learn-to-sail manual of the American Sailing Association, it is also used in the programs of many yacht clubs, colleges, and sailing groups. Unlike most introductory sailing books, which reflect the biases and idiosyncrasies of their authors, Sailing Fundamentals has been extensively pretested by ASA professional instructors to ensure that it offers the fastest, easiest, most systematic way to learn basic sailing and basic coastal cruising. This book covers every aspect of beginning sailing -- from hoisting sail to docking and anchoring -- and specifically prepares the learner to qualify for sailing certification according to international standards. Widely acclaimed author Gary Jobson has won several major races, including the 1977 America's Cup victory as tactician aboard Courageous. He was head sailing coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, and has conducted sailing clinics across the country. Illustrated step-by-step in two colors with over 150 line drawings and photographs.

Complete, but with poor illustrations.......2007-08-07
I have both Sailing Fundamentals and the US Sailing Basic Keelboat text. Overall, I find the Sailing Fundamentals to the more complete text of the two. However, the editing is sloppy in places and the illustrations are lacking compared to the US Sailing text. For those of you who are very visually oriented, I would suggest getting both texts. The US Sailing illustrations are very good.
ASA Manual.......2006-12-28
This manual is used by the American Sailing Association (ASA) for their sailing fundamentals class. Everything is useful and well explained, no fluff. Great for beginners and sailors that want to do the basics right.
Learning how to sail.......2006-08-18
This book provides the fundamental theory for getting started sailing. As with any activity that is learned with practice, readers should not expect to learn how to sail by reading the book. Reading it alone is really boring, but once you start sailing, many of the concepts explained in the book strat to make sense and it is a really useful reference.
Excellent introduction to sailing.......2006-07-10
This book was a requirement for my sailing class and is an excellent concise sourse of all begining sailing knowledge.
I've put everything I've learned so far to good use. Teaches all about sailboat terminology, safety, rules of the road, and most of all how to sail a boat with correct use of the available wind.
This book gives sufficient coverage to take the ASA certification, which is what I am embarking on. A great way to start upon a new sailing experience!
ASA Manual.......2006-03-07
This is a very basic and fundamental book with well presented information that is a necessary book in the American Sailing Association.
Book Description
Cruising Fundamentals provides the tools necessary to make the transition from basic sailing to competent coastal cruising. Sailors interested in learning how to sail and live aboard a 30 foot to 50 foot auxiliary-powered sailboat will find a wealth of practical skills in this book, from simple instruction on plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems to navigation, weather prediction, and anchoring techniques.
Cruising Fundamentals is the official American Sailing Association guide to intermediate coastal cruising and bareboat chartering. Sailing schools, yacht clubs, and other educational institutions throughout North America use this book as a text and indispensable resource in their teaching. Unlike other books on similar subjects, Cruising Fundamentals presents material in a chronology that has proven effective with thousands of developing sailors. Readers progress from "Getting Acquainted" to "Getting Familiar," "The Voyage," "Arrival and Living Aboard," and finally "Emergencies and Trouble Shooting." Each of the first four sections has review questions to help sailors evaluate their comprehension. Cruising Fundamentals is more than a book; it is a complete course that can benefit any sailor who desires to enter the exciting world of sailboat cruising.

A sailing instructor's view.......2003-09-13
It is a big step for an intermediate sailor to go to the Caribbean and bareboat charter a 40' vessel. We use this book to take the intermediate sailor to this level. Cruising Fundamentals contains a vast amount of detailed information and yet it is organized in logical steps to bring students to the desired level of competance without overwhelming them. This book contains many excellent photographs and sketches. The basic navigation information is excellent without going too deep and the review questions are good for self evaluation (am I really getting it?)
I particularly like the way systems are presented and compared. For example, the House DC system vs the shore power AC system, diesel engines vs gasoline engines featuring the differences and types of cooking fuels discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each.
This is an all round excellent book that can be read straight through or used as a reference. I understand the second edition is in the works and I look forward to getting it.
Very Beginning Level- Not all that great.......2003-06-28
I have never been cruising and really did not find this book to be very enlightening. It was VERY basic. You can expect things like "This is the hull, this is the sail" kind of stuff. I was really looking for more advanced topics like weather, emergency situations, planning a long distance cruise, etc.
This book is really for those of you thinking about buying a sailboat for cruising and have absolutely no boating experience. It touches on basic troubleshooting (and I mean basic) but does not really go in depth. I also purchased SAILING FUNDAMENTALS by Gary Jobson (Author), and found this book to be worth every penny. I would only recommend Cruising Fundamentals to those of you dreaming of cruising in the future, not very useful for anyone actually doing it.
I would rate this book at a high-school reading level.
Outstanding Followup to Sailing Fundamentals book........2000-08-04
This is American Sailing Association textbook for more advanced sailing topics and the the second of a series. The major plus of this book is that it teaches you how to sail with all the information you need to learn in the proper order you should learn it.
There is an advantage in learning the material in a time tested manner. Every time an instructor like the author, Harry Munns, teaches a course it gets better. This book gets the benefit of his tried and true, tested methods of sailing instruction. It works well.
This book follows "Sailing Fundamentals : The Official Learn-To-Sail Manual of the American Sailing Association and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary"
Get them both.
Each book follows the ASA Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising, and Bareboat charter courses.
Reading the books and then taking the courses will give you a jump start on your sailing skills.
Most sailors have knowledge like swiss cheeze--with lots of holes. The books will give you knowledge like American Cheeze--no holes.
Buy both books--you won't regret it. Read them and then take the courses for maximum effectiveness.
This is the path to skill, safety, and confidence on the water.
Book Description
Multihulls offer sailors expansive comfort, impressive speed, precise maneuverability, and, in the case of trailerables, easy storage and transportability. No wonder boat buyers and charter clients have begun migrating toward cats and tris in unprecedented numbers.
Multihull Cruising Fundamentals taps into the essence of multihull sailing and gives readers a clear and concise analysis of these largely unfamiliar boats. Chapters one through four provide the skills sailors need to get trailerable multihulls safely into the water, rigged and sailing. Larger, cruising catamarans and their unique sailing and handling needs are addressed in chapters five through eight.
The material in this book was developed by the American Sailing Association's Multihull Committee for use in classes throughout North America. Students will learn quickly and efficiently from Multihull Cruising Fundamentals' "no nonsense," step-by-step format. The knowledge and skills found in this text will prepare sailors to more fully enjoy the most forward-looking boats on today's pleasure boat market.

Text Book for Catamaran Class.......2005-09-21
I purchased this book as the required text for a two day catamaran class I am taking. It is well written and an easy read with some good tips and suggestions. It covers both trailerable size trimarans, catmarans and cruising sized Cats. As it's title says, it is a fundamentals book.
Multihull Cruising Fundamentals: The Official American Saili.......2003-09-06
Multihull Cruising Fundamentals is a nice book to get sailors familiar with the idiosyncracies of handling mid- to large size multihulls.
CATAMARANS OFFSHORE,a new book by Gregor Tarjan, which will be published in 2004, will continue where Rick White has left off.
Too fundamental, better choices out there........2002-12-12
This book was a complete let down for me. A very shallow and thin book with not a lot of useful information in it. It is simply too watered down and should be renamed "beginers basics for learning to sail your folding trimaran" rather than trying to pretend it tackles the much deeper subjects of cruising. For someone looking to learn the basics I would suggest a better combination of reading Royce's Sailing Illustrated, and then take a look at The Cruising Multihull by Chris White. You will get a lot more useful information both on the beginner and advanced end from that combination than this very weak book gives.
Experienced multihull fan review.......2001-11-26
This book is intended for people who know very little about sailing, and even less about multihulls.
If you have sailing and multihull experience this book is not for you.
Get this!.......2000-06-11
At last an intelligible multihull book that you can read & understand almost instantly . Full of practical knowledge and clearly written - you don't need to be a 5-10 yrs skipper or have a PhD in astrophysics to understand this lucid book. There are plenty of clear diagrams, safety aspects are well covered but the authors remain enthusiastic and balanced re multi vs monohull. Thouroughly recommended as an introductory text and for existing catamaran owners!

Excellent, comprehensive coverage of topics.......2000-07-16
This is one of the best books on general sailing that I have ever read. It comes in second only to 'Sailing For Dummies' and that is just by a very slim margin. I have both books in my sailing library and between them, I have more than enough reference material to cover almost any sailing situation. This book should satisfy both beginning and experienced sailors alike. Good job...

the best introductory book for performance sailng.......2005-03-06
I have been a sailng instructor at a university for over 6 years and all my students have told me they found this book to be the best on our sailing library. The photographs are exceptional and break down sailing concepts into time series photos that help people to really understand concepts in a way most text descriptions or one photo simply cannot. If you want to become a better sailor or are looking to learn how to sail this is the best book to get. It goes far beyond the "wind blows the sails and pushes the boat" description of sailing but in a way that is very easy to understand and replicate. Uses 470 , laser , and j/22 as primary example boats. As such it is a great book for people interested in racing or a more sophisticated knowledge of sailing in an easy to understand format, it is a shame this book is no longer published. The photos will blow you away.
