Beautiful!.......2000-07-22
This book describes the marine life of the Gulf of Mexico with numerous color photos and paintings by artist Larry Foster. This is a well-written and highly-recommended reference guide that will be particularly useful to readers or travelers visiting the Gulf.
Included in the book is a set of drawings of the skulls of Gulf species allow readers who find beached animals to identify the animal. Sketches provide dorsal, ventral and lateral views.
The authors discuss the environmental problems of the Gulf as they affect marine mammals, concluding: "Suffice it to say that our love for these creatures has the capacity of being turned into a positive conservation force, not for just them but also for their fragile environments worldwide." This is a recommended title!

Book Description
Is the first comprehensive manual that teaches how to hold the breath, stay underwater longer, and descend deeper into the blue. The book includes a history of freediving, and detailed drawings of underwater exercises, finning techniques and selected Yoga postures to enhance lung capacity. This book is highly recommended to Skin-divers, Scuba-Divers and Surfers. It teaches how to hold the breath longer under water.
Customer Reviews:
Informational but not necessarily a big help.......2007-08-31
This book is quite large and not quite what I was hoping for. I already knew a few exercises and techniques but found some of the extra ones in this book were awkward and proved to be a waste of time.
The book is quite touchy feely and doesn't excite you as you read. I don't know. You might enjoy it - I did learn some stuff from it, especially if you want to get right into the science of it all. Just didn't give me any improvement over my pre reading performance.
FREEDIVING ESSENTIALS.......2007-08-23
Must have for anyone in this beautiful sport. Recommended both for beginners and advanced freedivers!
Manual of Freediving: Underwater on a Single Breath.......2006-11-10
The most comprehensive book on Freediving "Apneists" that the world has ever seen; scientific and readable, it not only covers everything you'd need to know -- but also contains exercises, cautions, interviews and diagrams for total immersion into the world of underwater breath-holding.
The Bible for Freediving.......2006-08-02
As a freedive instructor, I feel that this book should be manditory for ALL freedivers who wish to learn from a master of the sport.
This is probably the most complete book on all aspects of freediving, and is manditory reading before taking one of Umberto's Apnea Academy courses.
I have trained with Kirk Krack, Pipin Ferarras and Aharon Solomons and can tell you that each has taught me something, but it was the combination of Aharon's teaching along with Umberto's book that took me to a new level of freediving. Since Aharon is an Apnea Academy Instructor, it was only natural to have this book be my required reading. As far as I am concerned, it is the best source available outside of taking one of Umberto's courses for learning how to freedive correctly, efficiently and effectively.
Do yourself a favor - get this book, forget about the hype - it is an instruction manual - learn from it - you won't regret it.
In Europe freediving is an art form. .......2006-04-04
In Europe freediving is an art form. It is against the law to spearfish using tanks therefore spearfishermen have had to dive deep in the cold waters of the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea hunting their quarry. More than that, freediving is the building block upon which good diving and underwater skills are based.
In the U.S. quickie scuba courses seek to get uninitiated postulates into the system as soon as possible. This in theory is laudable, and often in resort teaching environments with the ocean at hand to make practical lessons feasible, diver training can be adequate.
There is of course a big difference between a French beginning diver certification that requires 40 dives and turning out certified divers under American certification programs with only five.
In this new book, MANUAL OF FREEDIVING, UNDERWATER ON A SINGLE BREATH, two champions share their knowledge of breathhold diving. Umberto Pelizzari coauthored the manual with Stefano Tovaglieri.
Pelizzari is a graduate of the University of Milan with a degree in informatics. In Italy and throughout the world Umberto Pelizzari is renown, not for work in his degree area, but for his 17 world breath hold records. His legendary deep dives include 80 meters in constant weight, 131 meters in variable weight and 150 meters in no limits freediving. Freediving with one breath of air to those depths and returning to the surface.
Coauthor Stefano Tovaglieri has been a member of Italian apnea teams that have won world championships. Like Pelizzari, Tovaglieri is active in the Apnea Academy (www.apnea-academy.com), a school for instruction and research into subaquatic breath holding. He holds a university degree in physical education.
The authors are not only champions in their own rights but instructors and coaches whose teaching skills draw upon their years of experience in breath hold diving.
The book is illustrated with sketches by talented artist Nicola Refolo. The drawings make following the text easy and form an integral part of the manual. Every exercise is illustrated with a clear drawing.
Every diver can benefit from this most amazing manual. Ways to clear the ears are covered. Many methods developed by freedivers, who must descend quickly on one breath of air, are described as are exercises that make ear clearing work better. Ear clearing exercises and techniques are not only explained, they are clearly shown by illustrations.
Finning is explained in detail. The economic use of the fin stroke, a requirement for effective free diving, is so often overlooked by scuba divers that the bicycle kick is a norm even among some scuba instructors. Proper use of fins as the basis for scuba diving is a must and the MANUAL OF FREEDIVING provides extraordinary insight into the methodology as well as the proper alignment of the body while finning.
"I haven't been diving in a year-and-a-half because I was pregnant," a woman told me on today's boat dive. "Now that I'm a Mom, I'm concerned and want to be extra careful," she added. The woman was nervous. It was an ocean dive in the Gulf Stream. Stress.
The authors of the MANUAL OF FREEDIVING discuss the issue of stress in diving in great detail. How stress occurs and how stress can be reduced.
Talking to the woman before our scuba dive and explaining what she would see, descending with her, maintaining eye contact, holding her hand below and pointing out creatures, like the large sea turtle she had hoped to see as her `favorite creature," helped take some of the stress away.
"That was the greatest dive I ever had," she said back on the boat. Seasickness took a little of the elation away but the enthusiasm returned back at the dock. Instructors and divemasters can learn similar techniques to change a stressful situation to a great dive from this book.
The manual covers stress in detail with good pointers instructors will find helpful for their students.
Freedivers who pit themselves against the elements with one breath of air, cognizant of the risks involved, need to channel stress properly. They need to be aware of safety precautions and their own limitations.
For insights about stress alone, the MANUAL OF FREEDIVING, is well worth reading.
The book is well written, informative, translated from the original Italian professionally and a must for every serious diver's library.
ABOUT THE REVIEWER: John Christopher Fine is a Master Scuba Instructor and Instructor Trainer. He has authored 23 books, many based on his experience and training as a marine biologist. He has served as an member or officer of many international bodies whose goals are ocean conservation.

Lori Copeland, Dianna Crawford, Ginny Aiken, and Catherine Palmer
Four Victorian-era wedding novellas comprise this romance anthology. Each ends with a wedding feature of a different culture.
Customer Reviews:
Three good stories, one awful one.......2001-02-15
Dianna Crawford's,"Something New", was terrible. I was offended by the tone of the story that a Jewish couple easily discarded centuries of Judaism, in favor of Christianity. If Jews at fire and knifepoint throughout the centuries have not converted enmasse, it is not plausible to believe Rachel and David would convert so easily in 1895. Today there are very few Rabbi's that would marry a non-Jew and a Jew. It would never have happened in 1895! I know that Christians believe in trying to convert people from other faiths, but I felt angry with this story. The other three stories were fine, and the co-worker who loaned me this book was surprised at my reaction. Oh well.....
Four delightful historical wedding stories.......1999-04-11
Tying these four wedding stories together is the old bridal saying: "Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue..." I especially enjoyed Dianna Crawford's story about a young Jewish immigrant's arranged marriage to a San Francisco businessman's Christian son. I fell in love with the characters, especially the gifted and spunky heroine, who learns about Yeshua from her at-first-unwanted fiance. Also, Catherine Palmer's story about a young Scandinavian woman with an infant, who arrives in Louisiana to find her husband dead, tugged my heartstrings. How she learns to trust God and give up her memories of her homeland as she falls in love with the exuberant Cajun hero makes for an engrossing and delightful story. I highly recommend this book!

Book Description
Lisa Schamess's novel is a riveting interior view of a mind facing its own demisein understated language devoid of histrionics. This is a novel about a particular gay man's struggle to cope with his imminent death even as he tries to keep up with his professional commitments (he's a Washington, D.C., architect) and with mending his tangled personal relationships. It is also a story with universal reverberations. The milieu of Schamess's masterful first novel is David Baum's dying consciousness; human mortality is its theme.
Customer Reviews:
Shedding light with "Borrowed Light".......2005-11-14
This moving, never maudlin chronicle of a young man's journey from diagnosis to death from AIDS lets you into David Baum's mind and personality. With all the pettiness and greatness of soul that defines humankind, he takes us with him as his health deteriorates and his relationships change. A great priviledge. Movingly, beautifully written.
Devastating.......2003-02-22
At the age of twenty-five, David Baum was diagnosed with AIDS. Now he's a Washington, D.C. architect, he has a lover named Rich, he is acrid and honest and painfully blunt ... and he is dying. This is his story, the chronicle of his last four years on earth and his struggle to survive his work, his relationships, and his life.
By the time I reached the end of BORROWED LIGHT (which I did unfortunately far into the night), I was sobbing. Seldom have I encountered a book more emotionally devastating. Forget THE LOVELY BONES -- BORROWED LIGHT is neither sappy nor weak, the details are incredibly real, the prose is sheer poetry, and the result is amazing. In fact, by the time I reached the middle sections I had forgotten it was a novel; I read every word with the understanding it really happened. Although initially I found I had to take the story in small doses -- over a period of two days as opposed to my usual book-a-night orgy -- by the time I reached the end I was both shattered and incredibly impressed.
BORROWED LIGHT delivers everything it promises. I could not recommend it more highly.
I couldn't put it down.......2002-12-14
Lisa Schamess' first novel draws the reader in with lucid prose that verges on the poetic--and avoids that pretentious mush of self-conscious stream-of-consciousness from which many books suffer. In other words, it's both a good read and art. The book will stay with you long after you turn the last page. Readers who liked The Lovely Bones will enjoy it, and anyone who lived in a big city in the mid-1980s will appreciate the social milieu Schamess describes.
Fabulous and Moving work by Debut Novelist.......2002-11-07
Read This Book! I was so happy to discover this book. Lisa Schamess's writing is haunting, imaginative and always lush. She comes at her first novel with a firmly established, clear voice. Thank you! At first I wasn't sure I would be interested in the subject: Dying, AIDS, gay male architect. I check the "none-of-the-above" box when it comes to describing MY life. But a great author, as Schamess surely is, takes A life and makes it THE universal life. I can't wait for her next book!
Beautiful, lyrical novel.......2002-10-29
BORROWED LIGHT itself possesses a great luminosity, particularly in its prose style, which is at once hard-edged and lyrical, exactly in the right proportion. A wonderful debut novel!

Book Description
Sixteen-year-old Callisto May feels a deep connection to astronomy. She can name all the moons of Jupiter and even tell you the dimensions of the Great Red Spot. But she feels completely alone on planet Earth. And now that she’s pregnant, her loneliness is acute. She can’t turn to her mother, who’s always been too consumed with unspoken grief to care for her children; she can’t turn to her father, who buries himself in work and pretends that life at home is normal; and her surfer boyfriend wants freedom to catch the perfect wave more than he wants to hang around Callisto. Only Callisto’s little brother loves her unfailingly, but she can’t be there for him right now. She’s got to make a huge decision—and, for a change, that means thinking of herself first. Somehow, though, as her world orbits out of control, Callisto finds the courage to fight through the secrecy and silence that are suffocating her family, along with the strength to decide what’s best for her future.
Customer Reviews:
Dragging.......2007-02-23
Overall, it was pretty good, but for it being over 200 pages, the author dragged on. I'm strongly against abortion but all through the book I was like "when is she going to realize that she can't go through with the abortion?" This book is nothing like "Detour for Emmy." All I got to say is "I am so happy I didn't buy it."
Shine Your "Light".......2005-08-23
I read a great deal of books, with teen fiction being one of my specialities. Believe me when I say Borrowed Light is a must-read.
The protagonist is a teenager named Calliope who finds herself more or less caring for her little brother. She is a smart girl who is growing up more quickly than she should. Unbeknownest to her family, Calliope is pregnant and plans on having an abortion.
The title is so fitting for this book, coming from a great passage in which Calliope relates family members to celestial bodies. She is named after a moon, and, like that moon, feels that she borrows light from others, from family members who are suns and stars, who far outshine her.
Borrowed Light will inspire thoughtful discussions in book groups or classrooms. What some may consider a "touchy subject" is handled with feeling and deliacy, with no judgment passed. Shine on, Calliope.
my thoughts on borrowed light.......2004-03-15
i read the whole book in just a couple hours. i found myself getting lost in the book and feeling her feelings. i'm strongly against abortion and i am a christian. but i think in her situtation she wasn't thinking of it as a baby. i know it wasn't right for her but i dont think she had an adult in her life to teach her right from wrong. her mom was always off with the "sad ladies" trying to comunicate with the dead and her dad was always off in africa and her grandma was at conventions. she didn't have an adult who could teach her about sex and becoming a woman and the value of a babies life.
Borrowed Light.......2003-07-06
This is a truly excellent book. Anna Fienberg deals with the 'problem' of teenage pregnancy sensitively and her wonderful description of Callisto's life is great to relate to. Overall, a great read.
Borrowed Light by Anna Fienberg.......2002-06-25
Being a Christian and a human being with morals,I greatly disagree with the author's obvious choice to take abortion so lightly. In the book 'Borrowed Light' sixteen year old Callisto May finds herself pregnant with seemingly no one to turn to. She does not for one second consider letting her baby live and give it up for adoption. Her excuse: "Oh I'm just a timid little girl,I can barely take care of myself I can't possibly go through the trouble to have a baby, I just need a second chance! did her baby have a second chance? No, it didn't even have a first chance. This book was also VERY unrealistic. It appears that the author did very little research on the matter of abortion, or "termination" as she says. Even in this day and age it's difficult for a sixteen year old girl to just prance into an abortion clinic, without parental or guardian consent. In the end of the book, Callisto shows no remorse for the life she has terminated, she's just 'So happy to have another chance!'I thought this book was written in very childish manner I advise all who read this review not to read this book. Pass it on.
