Product Description

In the depth of every human being, there is a profound need for answers to the fundamental questions of existence. Is there a God? What is Truth? What is Reality? 'The Knee of Listening' has transformed the lives of thousands of secular and religious seekers since it was first published in 1972, because it answers all of these questions.

This autobiography shows, with incomparable wisdom and clarity, a life moved by the Divine, and a being of such unheard-of greatness that many readers are left amazed and touched by this book.

Adi Da s spiritual autobiography tells the miraculous story of his unique Incarnation and Revelation in the West for the sake of liberating all beings. To read it is to find the very Heart of Reality--tangibly felt in your own heart as the deepest truth of Existence. It is the great mystery that you are invited to discover.

This newly expanded edition includes an expanded description of Adi Da's early-life, leading up to his Divine Re-Awakening in 1970 and the secrets of his birth in 1939. It also has new revelations about the spiritual work of the great Realizers in his lineage, and Adi Da's unique demonstration of the Seventh Stage of Life. The profound events of "Yogic death" (in 1986, 1999, and 2000) that occurred after his Divine Re-Awakening--events that completed his process of Incarnating the Divine Conscious Light are new as well to this new edition.

From Amazon readers of a previous edition:

"... a kick a** book - that really gets to the core of what life, suffering and God Realization is all about.

"... an amazing story of the an actual and real spiritual awakening and transformation..."

Adapted from the introduction:

From time to time, there is a book that challenges, and eventually changes, the entire perspective of a civilization. 'The Knee Of Listening' is such an epoch-making book. Appearing at the beginning of the third millennium of the common era, it carries a Revelation that has the potenti

5 out of 5 stars A profound spiritual autobiography.......2005-04-29

The Knee of Listening by Adi Da Dawn Horse Press 621p (1995)

This is one of many editions of the spiritual autobiography of the unique American mystic
Adi Da. The first edition was 1972 and new editions with more material and much advertising about the group continue to appear. I also got the latest one(2004) which was about 3 times the size and weight but the hundreds of pages of new material was more of the opaque prose and advertising. So, I recommend one of the earlier paperpack editions like this one.

The sticker on the cover says `The most profound spiritual autobiography of all time` and this might well be true. I am in my 60's and have read thousands of books and this if one of the great ones. Certainly it is by far the fullest and clearest account of enlightenment I have ever seen. Even if you have no interest at all in the most fascinating of all human psychological processes, it is an amazing document that reveals a great deal about religion, yoga, and human psychology and probes the depths and limits of human possibilities.

As I have read and experienced alot in various religious traditions, I naturally compare his writings with those of others, particularly with the great Indian mystic Osho. Though they clearly agree on the major points of how to prodceed on the path, letting go of the attachment to the spiritual quest etc. their styles are vastly different. Both are highly intelligent and well read(Osho could speed read and read over 100,000 books) and were at home in the spiritual literature of the major religious traditions. However, most of Da's books are essentially unreadable as he struggles to express in language the ineffable realms of the enlightened mind. Even in this, by far his most readable book, he often veers off into pages of opacity as he tries to explain the unexplainable. Osho by contrast is the clearest, most jargon free expositor of the spiritual life who has ever lived. He wrote very little and nearly all of his more than 200 books are transcriptions of spontaneous talks he gave-- with no notes or preparation. They are nonetheless unexcelled masterpieces of spiritual literature. His amazing àutobiography`(actually compiled after his death) has been published by St. Martins by the full version is available online at www.oshoworld.com and other places. Unfortunately, he has very little to say about the exact details of his spiritual progress.

Most of Osho's talks were videotaped and are available on tape and DVD. As Da lives most of the time in seclusion on an island in Fiji it is not easy to get to hear him but the Dawn Horse Press sells a few videotapes on their web page. Da is not a very engaging or facile speaker, unlike Osho who is by turns amusing, shattering and hypnotic. But, as both of them understand, it's what the master is and not he says that is important.

Both of them were utterly honest and uncompromising in their life and teachings and Da omits nothing of relevance, including his youthful adventures with sex and drugs as well as his exposure to LSD, psilocybin and mescaline as a volunteer in government experiments. However, as with many or perhaps all of those destined to become enlightened, he was different from birth and experienced the Shakti energy (which he calls the Bright) from childhood. And, when he entered college, he said his primary interest was to discover what living beings are and what is living consciousness. Clearly not your typical freshman.

A major problem in describing advanced spiritual states is that no criteria or language for them exists in common discourse so mystics have to try to bend language in mostly vain attempts to capture their experiences. It is far worse than trying to describe seeing to a congenitally blind person since they at least have the cognitive structures and experience of the world. But mystics are quite rare and most of them have left little or no description of their mental states.

Unlike Osho, who rejected miracles, paranormal phenomena and all the other nonsense that commonly accompanies religion, Da seems to lack any science background at all and embraces precognition(p120), reincarnation(p555),`meditating` other persons, living on air(p287) etc., and regards the phenomena that I would say are happening in his brain as being `out there`. From comments included in newer editions it is clear that many of his disciples believe he can perform miracles like stopping a raging forest fire at their California retreat. Nevertheless, most of the time he is amazingly levelheaded, going thru over a decade of stress and psychic terrors that would drive most from the spiritual path. Millions of years of evolution have solidified the ego and it does not leave peacefully.

Interwoven with the spellbinding account of his spiritual progress are the details of the minds interaction with the body described in the East in terms of various forms of Yoga(eg., p95-9, 214-21, 249,281-3, 439-40). These few pages are worth more than a whole shelf of yoga books if you want to get to the heart of the mind/body relation in spirituality.

Unlike most who have become enlightened, he had a thorough grounding in Christian practice and made a major effort to become a protestant and then Greek Orthodox minister. Even years later, after he was far along the path with Muktananda, he had an amazing and totally unexpected series of visitations from Mary and Jesus that went on for weeks(p 301-3 et seq.).

Regarding drugs, as is nearly universal among spiritual teachers, he notes that although they may remove certain barriers at times, they do not provide a shortcut to understanding. However, nearly everyone is now aware that they put many on the path to higher consciousness.

He describes in detail the many stages in his ego death or self realization(eg, p72-4, 198-200, 219,20, 238-9, 245, 249, 258-9, 281, 355-65, 368-72, 406). Along the way, he realized the ultimate disutility of all practices and all traditions(337-9) including yoga(281-3) which are all attached to seeking and goals, ultimately winding up in the present. He discovered, as have many others, that seeking and meditation became obstacles and gave them up for devotion to his guru Muktananda(p420-22). His detailed accounts of his interactions with the famous Swami Muktananda and his ultimate realization of his limitations are of rare insight and honesty.

He constantly encounters his attachment to his ego(Narcissus-- eg, p108-110) and asks himself--`Avoiding Relationship?` by which he seems to mean avoiding the divine or ego death with spiritual seeking.

After enlightenment he teaches the 'only by me revealed and given Way of the heart`, finding all other paths to be `remedial` and 'egoic' and merely pursuing God or reality(p359 +) but after a careful reading of this and several other books I never got any idea what that way consists in. Undoubtedly being in his presence helps alot but in other places he has complained about the fact that his disciples just won't let it happen and one wonders if even one has been able to follow him. Of course the same considerations apply to all traditions and teachers and though some of Osho's friends(he disavowed the master/disciple relationship) have claimed enlightenment, nobody of his status has emerged. It looks like you have to have the right genes and the right environment and a very advanced and preferably enlightened guru to stimulate you. The world desperately needs higher consciousness and I hope that someone comes up with an easier way very soon.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-and-Heart Opening.......2005-02-10

Adi Da Samraj reveals his life and work in the pages of this autobiography, and as that revelation unfolds, a simple fact emerges: he has gone through an extraordinary ordeal to give us all a way to be happy, even right now. It is a fascinating and moving account of how that way came to be, full of both the ordinary trappings of human existence and incredible spiritual awakenings. This book opened my eyes and heart to a rare being. Definitely worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars The most illuminating autobiography you will ever read!.......2005-01-18

This is the most illuminating autobiography you will ever read! It will change your whole idea of life. When I read Adi Da's words, I can feel amazing clarity and bliss pervading my mind and heart. Troubles, seeking, and problems seem to instantly disappear.

I have always loved the prologue to the Knee of Listening, which speaks about the real possibility of freedom from fear of death:

"Death is utterly acceptable to consciousness and life. There has been endless time of numberless deaths, but neither consciousness nor life has ceased to arise. The felt quality and cycle to death has not modified the fragility of flowers, even the flowers within the human body. Therefore, one's understanding of consciousness and life must be turned to That Utter, Inclusive Truth, That Clarity and Wisdom, That Power and Untouchable Gracefulness, That One and only Reality, this evidence suggests. One must cease to live in a superficial and divided way, seeking and demanding consciousness and life in the present apparent form, avoiding and resisting what appears to be the end of consciousness and life in death.

The Heart Is Real understanding. The Heart Is Real Consciousness and Real Life. The Heart Is What Merely and Only Is, but Which Is also Appearing In and Behind the conditions of mortal life and its death. Therefore, it is said of old, the One That Is Is neither born nor come to death, not Alive merely as the limitation of form (itself), not Itself (or Entirely) Rendered in what appears, and, yet, It Is the Living One, than Which there Is no lesser other (and no Great or Greater Other), Appearing As all of this Play of changes, but Eternally One, Unchanging, and Free.

There is Only the Constant Knowledge and Enjoyment of the Heart, moment to moment, through the instant of all conditions of appearance and disappearance. Of This I Am Perfectly Certain. I Am That."

5 out of 5 stars Profound beyond Limit.......2004-07-31

I have just started reading this newly updated book, having read an older version several years ago, and I am even more speechless reading this book - with the profundity, the sacrifice, and the recognition of the One Who speaks through The Knee of Listening. This is spiritually historical, but also very human.

I am newly impressed on each page and each chapter, with the depth of Adi Da's Realization, and with the sacrifice Adi Da has made and continues to make for the sake of returning to the "Bright" not just himself, but as his gift for all humanity, for our liberation and Happiness. The relentless willingness he has to go beyond all limits blows me away! Also, the relationship he had to his teachers is very instructive, especially talking about Nityananda and Vivekenanda. I think this book is a must read for anyone interested in God, Truth, Religion, or anyone on their own spirutual path.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than I Thought.......2005-10-08

This Heartland book had me immediately thinking, oh boy. I did not think I would like this book. Surprisingly I did, because there was a lot of things not out in the open that were underlying in the story. Let's face it: this book IS typical Heartland because it was about Amy helping this family pick up from her last visit in book #9. Carey is a troubled teen that does not feel sure about how to feel after her grandfather Huten dies. But she knows in her heart that she must leave Ocanuba because he gave her his blessing to go see the world. Amy, helping Maverick and through horses, can understand human behavior, which is quite right. Also this book carries the fact that saying you'll leave a person or place you love is one thing, but it takes courage to actually follow through. Brooke deserves a lot of credit here for her thick plots. This book actually kept me turning the pages for hours on end.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME SERIES, AWESOME BOOK.......2005-04-15

This book wuz my absolute fav. I am soooo glad Amy took Ty 2 Ocanumba. He really changed Maverick. I also luved Every New Day, a Heartland book about when Amy goes 2 Ocanumba by herself. Ocanumba really changed from #9 2 #18. Huten's words really r true. (If u don't know wat i mean, read Every New Day!) I definetly recommend this book. Wat r u waitin for? Run out and buy it!

2 out of 5 stars This book should be called Occanumba, not Heartland!.......2005-04-08

This book is not my favourite in the Heartland series. It is not even really about heartland, the main part of the book is based in Occanumba.
Also, there are hardly any horses in this book, just Maverick (who is only a minor part) and a tiny bit of Spindleberry and Albatross. It is mainly about Carey and her mood swings.
It is also a bit unrealistic, as Amy comes out eith long, involved, emotional speeches that no teenager i know would blab on about! The way she talks is more like a middle aged psychatrist!
I also think that the most recent books have been targeted at a younger audience. At the start of the series i would class them as 'young adult' material, but now they are just for kids who like horses. She is supposed to be going out with Ty but they never seem to kiss much or do anything romantic. In this book he goes to Occanumba with Amy and they don't even get off together once! Even though they are in the forest all alone at one point, with no adults around.
All in all this book is ok, but rather boring. Nothing much happens, i thought Amy might at least have an arguement with Joni when she takes over with Spindleberry, but no, Amy has gone middle-aged and doesn't do anything. I would only recommend buying this book if you are a total heartland fan. Carey is really annoying at the start and the horses hardly feature at all.
I hope the last 2 books in the series are better, because this one was rather pants.

2 out of 5 stars New Beginnings show end of Heartland.......2005-04-05

New Beginnings is book that is a repeat of past heartland books. Since #8 Heartland book (Thicker than Water)the series has lost interest in me. Someone always has an issue, and it becomes solved by Amy. No one else. And the issue is always revoled around a horse. In the end there is some sort of join up, and the story ends happily.
Another issue I have with these books is that they do not grow with the reader, I started reading these books at age 11, now I am 15. There needs to be more drastic events (or at least one) within the characters. There needs to be something more exciting (Mystery, Romance, or Action). Overall New Beginnings is unthrilling, and a repeat of past books. Readers should only read this book if you are young and starting off with chapter books.

5 out of 5 stars What's next with Lauren Brooke.......2005-04-02

Like many of you I am a big fan of this and all Lauren Brooke Heartland books. Sadly the series will end after book #20 which will come out in July. Lauren Brook though will be starting a NEW SERIES called Chestnut Hill. The first book will be called The New Class and will be out in August. I can't wait. It looks to be very interesting and I can't wait to read it.

Book Description

Chosen by the Sunday Times (London) as one of its 99 Best Books for Children

The people of remote Inishrone, a few miles off the Connemara coast, know better than to go to the Island of Horses. Everyone has heard tales of men who have gone there and never come back. Yet one day young Pat Conroy and his friend Danny MacDonagh head off anyway, telling their parents that they are fishing for eels. On the island they find no ghosts but many mysteries, including a beautiful—and tame—black colt. But when they return home, with the colt in tow, they find themselves launched into a world of trouble. Before their adventure is over, the boys must brave rough seas and the murderous duplicity of a conniving horse trader, with only the advice of Pat's frail grandmother and their own good sense to guide them.

A loving, clear-eyed portrait of rural Irish life, The Island of Horses is fraught with suspense and peopled with unforgettable individuals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb Reissue.......2005-01-15

Everyone who loves children's books, no matter what your age, should snap up this novel while it is in print. The writing is superb, and the flavor of the western islands of Ireland is irresistable. Add to that the unbeatable combination of adventure, sailing, and horses, and you have a book no reader of any age can put down. Homeschoolers looking for books for teenagers that are fascinating, yet devoid of a lot of the less savory aspects of modern teen novels, take note.

Book Description

The Horse's Mouth, the third and most celebrated volume of Joyce Cary's First Trilogy, is perhaps the finest novel ever written about an artist. Its painter hero, the charming and larcenous Gulley Jimson, has an insatiable genius for creation and a no less remarkable appetite for destruction. Is he a great artist? a has-been? or an exhausted, drunken ne'er-do-well? He is without doubt a visionary, and as he criss-crosses London in search of money and inspiration the world as seen though his eyes appears with a newly outrageous and terrible beauty.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book........2007-06-15

All readers have their favorite books, the ones you pull out every year or two to read again, or to pass along to a friend. This is mine. The Horse's Mouth is so many things. It's a visual novel -- the world filtered through the eyes of a sensual and hapless painter. It's a literary work that incorporates William Blake's visionary poetry to great effect. It's an occasionally comedic work that is also poignant. It's a story about an unreliable man who is probably not very nice to be around, is certainly not honest, is terribly self-centered, is capable of violence, and yet is thoroughly likable. One of my most common complaints against authors is when they fail to create characters the reader can care about, for good or ill. Gully is a thoroughly developed, and very flawed, character that you will root for. You might not want to come face to face with such a fellow, but he's worth reading about.

And if you like this book, go on to read Herself Surprised. Just as Cary was able to get into the mind of an artist for The Horse's Mouth, he manages to view the world as a woman in Herself Surprised. Few male authors have done this a well as he.

5 out of 5 stars It's only the art that matters after all.......2006-09-16

This is my favorite book of all time. As an artist/author I can relate completely with the main character, the endearing, irascible but delightful Gully Jimson. It seems as though the Universe is against him trying to work and create his art! Like the great William Blake, Gully's painter poet hero, Gully is not respected and appreciated for his original artistic genius.

The prose is outstanding and rich, lyrical, poetic and beautiful, the characters unique, realistic and unforgettable. If you never read another book in your life you need to read this one first. I have read it again and again and when times get tough it always makes me laugh!

I only wish Joyce Carey had written much more as he was the best of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Just read it........2004-09-05

I read Herself Surprised, and it is one of my all time favorites. I tried To Be a Pilgrim, but the main character was so pensive about everything that I couldn't take it. The Horse's Mouth is absolutely great. I'm not going into great detail about the books. You can read the other reviews. Read it if you love good literature that comments on people and the times in which it was written (in this case still rings true).

5 out of 5 stars Totally Rad.......2004-01-21

Gulley Jimson is a totally rad main character! I've never seen a profile of an artist this imaginative and complete. Gulley lives and breathes and climbs off the page right into your reality. He is obsessed with painting--he sees things he wants to paint everywhere and he describes it all in beautiful detail. This would be annoying in any other book. But Gulley is such a charmer, and Cary so talented, that as Gulley scrapes through life in his odd way, you forgive him his many faults. He's an artist after all. He perpetrates plenty of injustices himself, of course, but you appreciate his personality and philosophy so much, that you want to cut him a break.

One of the many masterful touches Joyce Cary uses is to always have Gulley working on a significant painting. It gets you to root for Gulley to do something even bigger than his one famous painting, and it makes you sympathize with the real people who put up with artists. But Gulley can't win. He is painting The Fall and it gets used to patch the roof of his hovel. He's painting Lazarus at the Grave and he has to flee from a crash-pad turned sour. He's going to sell a sketch of The Bath and instead manages to murder his only love. He's painting The Creation and the city comes and knocks the wall down. It is beautiful. Cary frames the whole novel with various potential masterworks that Gulley is painting, and in each one you see how life gets in the way of art, and how random are the winds of fortune.

We read this book in my book club and we agreed that it was one of the best of the 20 or so we've so far read together. I'm curious about the other two in Cary's trilogy. This is very much a complete work in itself, but I understand from the introduction that as a series it's even more illuminating.

This NYRB edition is printed on quality paper that stays white for a long time (I got my copy used and it's still very nice). Which is great, because you'll probably want to keep this book.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best!.......2003-12-11

This is one of the funniest books I've read. Great characters and excellent dialogue.

Book Description

A new rider is stealing Carole's spotlight.

Zachary Simpson has only just started riding at Pine Hollow, but everyone is totally impressed by his natural talent. Everyone except Carole Hanson, that is. She's glad that he seems to love riding, but she's a little uncomfortable at how much attention he's getting from everyone else in Pony Club. Is Carole just jealous? And is Zach a mere flash in the pan, or is he the real thing? The upcoming Pony Club competition should give Zach a chance to show everyone what he's capable of and answer those questions.

But Zach falls apart, and the show is a disaster. Then he announces that he's going to quit riding. Suddenly it's up to Carole to remind Zach of all the things that make riding and horses so special. Can she convince him to get back in the saddle?

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2005-10-30

This book is almost identical to the one where Andrea Barry came to Pine Hollow. A gifted rider begins at the stable, is given extra attention by Max the trainer, and admiration from the other riders, and Carole gets jealous. Well, eventually, of course, she learns that being a green eyed monster doesn't pay, when she and the rider must work together to deliver a foal. You'd think Carole would have learned this lesson by now, but apparently not.

5 out of 5 stars really great.......2004-01-05

This book was great it had three really cool events. One revolved around a pregnant mare, one was with stevie and the other had to do with a new rider named zach. i got this book for christmas and didn't think it was going to be good but when i started reading it, I though it was great. This was one of my favorite Saddle club books. It felt like three different stories all together. I loved it

4 out of 5 stars cool book.......2001-07-07

I LOVE all horse books and have read all the Saddle Clubs and Thoroughbred books. This one was like the others, but since I know all the charactres so well it was fun to read. A REALLY good horse book and mystery is Shadow Horse. WAY cool and a good sumer read for fun.

5 out of 5 stars Jealousy will get you no where.......2001-03-13

When Carole learns how good the new rider is at their stable she becomes a little jealous and loses sight of what really matters. In fact her jealousy of this new rider makes her forget her responsibility of a new horse at pine hollow and almost causes a disaster which is only solved when she and the new rider get together to help and a mare and foal out of a tricky situation. Carole and the new rider decide to start over and eventually become friends when the new rider decides he does not want to ride in competions but just for fun Carole does her best to show him that it is alright just to ride for fun and not for competition

5 out of 5 stars The Saddle Club.......2001-01-16

I haven't read this particular book, but I have read every other Saddle Club book in the series, and I loved every one. the saddle club series are about 3 girls Carole Hanson, Stevie Lake, and Lisa Atwood. They are very different except for 1 thing, they all love horses. Stevie loves to ride her horse Belle, and to play practical jokes on her 3 brothers and her rival, the spoiled brat Veronica DiAngelo. But Stevie is a very disciplined dressage rider. She barely manages a C average in school, wheras Lisa is a straight A student, who is the newest rider of the 3. She doesn't own a horse, but she rides a school horse Prancer all the time. Carole is the most horse crazy of the 3. She knows the most, and can sometimes go on and on about somehing Stevie and Lisa already know! She's very organized about anything to do with horses, but is very flaky with anything that doesn't. Stevie and Lisa have a toothbrush just for Carole when she comes for a sleepover because she never remembers it! She has a horse named Starlight and is a terrific jumer. Although I haven't read this book, I insist you read it. All the Saddle Club books are terrific!

5 out of 5 stars A thorough and excellent review of tack and saddlery..........2001-02-12

I bought this book for my husband at Christmas, and we've both fallen in love with it. He looks at it so often it just sits on the floor by his chair now, never making it back to the bookcase. It contains over 250 pages of excellent information for the rider, English or Western, as well as historical information about the origins of tack and saddles.

The book starts out with a history of tack, up through the making of the modern saddle; covers specialty saddles; has an extensive section on bits, bridles and additional aids; covers driving and farm harnesses; various training aids, outlines a well-equipped stable; illustrates various cerimonial trappings, and shows us samples of riding dress.

There are thousands of marvelous photographs, both black & white as well as color; pages of line drawing illustrations; charts; diagrams; the works! It's not an inexpensive book, but for the serious rider it's well worth the investment. If you are such, don't hesitate, go for it!

    Book Description

This unique collection of fifteen folktales draws on the rich storytelling tradition of Mexico's people and culture. Classic themes and fairytale elements are blended with magic and transformation and infused with Roman Catholic imagery to create a distinctly Mexican flavor and flare. The Virgin Mary plays the role of fairy godmother, devils gamble for souls, and witches make themselves known by dancing at fiestas with horse hooves instead of feet. And as in other folk traditions, cats, dogs, fools, soldiers, and princesses go on quests and have magical adventures. Lively retellings and vibrant, whimsical paintings, based on Mexican folk art, make these spirited tales just right for storytimes and a perfect introduction to this little-known body of folk literature. Introduction, notes on the stories, bibliography.

    Book Description

Welcome to Chestnut Hill, a prestigious boarding school with a rich tradition of academics, horses, and rivalry. This year, five girls from different backgrounds will challenge the Chestnut Hill stereotype. There's witty, spunky Dylan; secretive Malory; western tomboy Lani; Honey, the soft-spoken Brit; and polished New Yorker Razina. None is prepared for the social or riding rigors, and they all doubt they will fit in -- certainly not if queen bee Lynsey and her clique have any say. But if this unlikely fivesome can band together, they may prove themselves the true stars of Chestnut Hill.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars NOT ENOUGH HORSES!.......2007-06-13

Personally, i've never read the Heartland books, but my friend tells them they are WAAAYY butter than the Chestnut Hill ones. Well, i read this book and all i can really say is that it was so boring in some parts i almost stopped reading.
I like the fact that it isnt none-stop HORSES HORSES HORSES,and that it also talks alot about school, friends, homework and stuff like that--but i also think that it talked WAY TOO MUCH about homework, school and friends and WAY not enough about horses. I really wouldnt say that this is a book for a die-hard horse crazy girl (yes, it's DEFINETLY just for girls) but i will say that it is a good book. but it sometimes goes on boring chapters full of just classes and grades and gossip and all that.
The characters in the book lack reality, and all but one are spoiled and rich.
Here's a summary of what happens in the book:
Stylish, spoiled, rich Dylan Walsh comes to Chestnut Hill thinking it's going to be the best time of her life. she's looking forward to seeing her beloved pony and her aunt, the riding instructor of CH. She makes friends, and also makes an enimie with one of CH's most snootiest girls, by taking a stupid dare to jump her horse in the dark of night. She's also upset since she's not her aunt's shining star in the riding class. she thinks she should get special treatment for being family. Along with a few other small things that happen in this book, that's about all. So please, only read it if you are hard up for a book. It's really not worht the time.

    1 out of 5 stars Hated it.......2007-02-24

This book was terrible compared to Heartland. Dylan, the main character in the story, should have been suspended for stupidly taking a dare that two other rich girls gave her. The dare was to jump a course in the dark. Dylan could have injured her mount, badly. But she didn`t care. All she cared about was being the best jumper on the team. Dylan also expected special treatment from her aunt, who is a riding instructor at Chestnut Hill. But her aunt is too moody to pay attention to Dylan. To sum it up, this book is not really about horses. It is about fitting in. Heartland, however, is about listening to the horses. No one at Chestnut Hill really and truly listens to the horses.

5 out of 5 stars Great for horse lovers of all ages.......2006-12-07

For Dylan Walsh, riding her favorite horse, Morello, on the equestrian team at Chestnut Hill would be a dream come true. But Dylan quickly learns that getting along with the other girls at the school is going to be complicated. She gets a quick lesson in humility, peer pressure, and the reality of putting pride before safety. Dylan also worries that her classmates my suspect favortism if they find out that her Aunt Ali is one of the riding instructors at the school. Knowing which friends she can trust, and how to be trusted herself, becomes a difficult balancing act for Dylan. This is a great coming-of-age story for horse lovers.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books Ever!.......2006-11-26

Chesnut Hill follows four (not five!) girls who are all different from eachother, yet have at least one thing in common: their love of horses and riding! Spunky, witty, and stylish Dylan Walsh is embarking on her first year at Chestnut Hill boarding school in VA. There she befriends Felicity "Honey" Harper, a quiet yet kind Brit, Malory O'Neil, the secretive girl who has a special connection to horses, and Lani Hernandez, a true cowgirl from CO who has a need for speed. CH seems promisisng, especially when Dylan, Honey, Malory, and Lani find out about the Jr. Jumping Team!

But during a secret dorm party one night, queen bee Lynsey Harrison and her clone, Patiecence Duvall, challenge Dylan to a dare that almost suspended her from CH! And now Mal and Dylan have gotten into a fight, to make matters worse.

This is a better series than Heartland, because Heartland is very dark and Chesnut Hill is more bright and is more about a different type of social class than Heartland. I tried reading Heartland when I was 8, but (personally) I thought the book was extremly depressing and didn't exactly tell about the thrill of riding, like CH does. Chesnut Hill is a great series to read!

5 out of 5 stars Chestnut hill vs. Heartland.......2006-10-02

Chestnut hill is great but heartland is a little better. Heartland got more susppensful than chestnut hill and thats what i like in a book. It would be great if more heartland books came out and more chestnut hill ones too.
