Book Description
THEY COULD SURVIVE ANYTHING IN THE ARCTIC WILDERNESS--EXCEPT THE WHITE MAN.
They were rich, the caribou were abundant. Their dogs were many and strong. The children in the tents were happy, and there was never any fear of going hungry. Then came the ruthless white man's civilization. And with it came slaughter of the herds, starvation of the flesh, and torture of the spirit.

Then came the ruthless white man's civilzation. And with it came slaugther of the herds, starvation of the flesh, and torture of the spirit. Courageous, proud in their age old way of life and now fighting to save themselves from extinction.

This book is the continuation of the story of the Caribou-Eskimo (Ihalmiut), of whom Mowat first wrote about in his first book, People of the Dear. The latter was an account of his experiences among these people while doing research for the government in 1947 and 1948. The Desperate People relates the plight of the Ihalmiut over the course of the next ten years. During this time, the Ihalmiut suffer considerably, the victims of exploitation, prejudice, governmental bungling, ignorance, and willful mistreatment. It is a chronicle of the decline of a once independent, self-sufficient people into a wretched, servile and dependent lot. The book left me feeling angered and ashamed. It is a book that should be read by all Canadians.
This book ... monkeys.......2002-11-17
I thought this book stunk. He must of been really desperate to publish a book. It was like reading a porly written history book. I couldn't understand anything he said. I didn't know who was who and where everything is. He repeated himself alot and jumped around. It really bit, even though I gave it a star it deserves no stars.
Canadaýs Edward Abbey takes us to the last of the People.......2000-04-06
"The Desperate People" is a very different book from its sister volume, "People of the Deer." Although it tells a continuing story, it was written many years later and, unlike the previous volume, Farley Mowat himself does not play a direct role in the narrative. Although one feels that he is never more than a heartbeat away from the action, he does not intrude upon it. It is the People's story; he is just the teller. As for the story he tells, it is not a pretty one.
In the book, he evokes a scene in a coastal town of the Arctic, in which a supply ship is making a stopover. Excitement runs through the townspeople as the ship's crew and passengers are brought to shore. It is a very bright moment in an otherwise dull, monotonous routine. One of the passengers detaches himself from the crowds leaving the vessel and makes his way through the town to an encampment on its edge. Tents are struck there and as he approaches, it happens that one of the occupants is outside and sees him approaching. It is an Eskimo dressed in rags and wearing an unmistakable air of dejection. Suddenly the visitor recognizes the man and hails him, but is not answered.
The visitor is Mowat and the Eskimo is Ohoto, a member of the Ihalmiut, one of the People. The two have not set eyes on each other for more than ten years. From that last meeting, looking backwards, Farley Mowat reconstructs the life of this little-known inland tribe as they prepare, unknowingly, to meet their doom. The story has grandeur as well as the appalling odour of decay. It has the sensitivity to show us that the fragility of the Ihalmiut may well turn out to be our own. It is also a finely written work, which had me yearning for some of the places described within and it may affect you that way too. At any rate, this second and perhaps final book about the People is so plainly filled with human understanding that one has to be very indifferent indeed, to take nothing from it.
Very interesting........1999-10-29
I think the arthur was really desperate when he set out to write a book about the people that is not his race and at the time of his travel, the people he wrote about were normads and now today, they are reading his book. It is interesting.

Book Description
The spellbinding story of a love triangle, and the heartbreak and elation that come with the search for true love.
Pete Sorenson is an orphan who spends his childhood shuttling from one foster home to another. The only constant is his memory of Barney, a friend he had to leave behind after his mother died. Pete keeps the image of Barney forever in his mind, as a kind of guardian angel he can turn to, especially in times of trouble.
The Pete's life takes a turn found only in fairy tales: a wealthy uncle whisks him away to enjoy the kind of life only money and education make possible. Pete goes to law school, and it is there that he meets Annie. Smart and funny, Annie is the best friend Pete has had since Barney.
But it seems Annie is not to be the love of Pete's life. For in his early thirties, Pete falls in love with Maddie Stern across a crowded room. Maddie had been a foster child too, and along with her breathtaking beauty she seems to understand Pete as no one else can.
But just days before the wedding, Maddie disappears. His world shattered, Pete reaches out to the one person who has always been there for him. Annie leaves behind her life in Boston to pick up the pieces for Pete, both of them knowing that Maddie must be out there somewhere . . . .
Customer Reviews:
It Takes A Miracle For Some Men To Come to Their Senses........2006-07-26
It is so much easier to fall in love with a stranger than your good friend who'd put everything on the back burner to come to the aid of a friend. I thought that growing up without a mother was hard until I read about Pete losing both parents as a young child, as did Addie and Janny who also grew up in the foster care program. Now, that has to be the pits.
Pete had dreams of finding his cousin and using the thing his mother left to him as a remembrance, simultaneously at the age of sixteen. Neither worked the way he had imagined. With the monetary help of an uncle who lived a sullen, unforgiving life because he could not marry the woman he loved, Pete attended Harvard where he met his destiny, Annie, and yet it took a total disaster in Pete's personal life for him to learn these facts.
It was twenty years after he gave up on finding Barney, that he found what he thought was his true love. She was so wild, lovely and different from him. He was old beyond his years. As the lovebirds were planning a future together, he secured the funds for Mattie to find her dream life in a store she named appropriately "Fairy Tales." He'd thought that this gypsy girl was his destiny and soon put Annie on the back burner of his life. He was living a fairy tale, as Mattie and her childhood friend Janny were. Janny always had the goal of finding her birth mother, as the adoption did not take and she grew up in foster homes along with Mattie.
It's a good thing these young women were tough on the inside as they witnessed a terrible murder and were taken into the Protective system which was a Hell on Earth. Annie left her career in law on hold and rushed to her friend's assistance to carry on with "Fairy Tales" and to decorate his new fancy house out by the lake along the Eastern coast near his uncle's mansion. During this separation, both Pete and Mattie changed drastically; they learned to never take things for granted again and never presume, never assume.
Annie learned the hard way that she had actually loved Pete all these years more than as a friend. She learned that love meant putting the other person first and was wanting the other's happiness more than you want your own. Pete had no time for trips down Memory Lane, and he persisted in dreaming of Mattie. One day he realized what he had been missing and looked at Annie through the eyes of love. How could something so ordinary be so wonderful? He had depended on her for his emotional needs since their Harvard days; when she went her own way to find some solace for her broken heart, he goes after her.
She finds Barney for him, his good fortune, as Pete gives him the uncle's house and all of its contents. He has a new home and a woman to complete the picture of domestic tranquility. From that moment, he meant to live in the present and put the past completely behind him. Who has time to wallow in self-pity?
My Favvvvvvvvv Fiction Book.......2006-04-30
Aloha, Fern Michaels!!! "Desperate Measures" is absolutely, positively, indeed, My Favvvvvvvvv Fiction Book in the Whole Wide World. I truly enjoyed reading it -- immensely!!! It was so heart felt and touching, especially concerning the two young boys, who made promises to each others. Although time, age, distance and dire circumstances kept them apart for decades, they reunited later in life. I often reread that part when things are going sour in my life as to glean a lil more hope and strength.
The ending was simply, superb. I've read many of your books and look forward to reading more. You're indeed my favvvvvvvvvv author in the whole wide world of fiction, hehe. Keep up the {{{GOOD WORK, FERN!!!}}} I shall read perhaps alllllll of your books, this life time, lol.
Mahalo for sharing your ingenius wrting talents w/ the UNIVERSE.
God Bless,
JASMINE STARR in Hawaii
TOO MUCH FOUL LANGUAGE FOR ME.......2006-01-09
I have liked all of the books I have read of Fern's but this one is the first that has crossed the line for my distaste in reading two different ways to curse.
I have stopped reading it and hope that the othe4 10 books I have by her lack these words.
Ms. Michaels, please do not use God's name in vain in your writings and the F word.
This is my humble opinion.
Desperate Measures must be taken!.......2001-12-08
This book "Desperate Measures" is a very good book. In the book Pete Sorenson talks about how he lost his mom and dad, and he remembers memories from when he was little. Me reading that and comprehending that makes me think how lucky I am to still have my mom and dad. I think it's great that Pete has such a great friend like Anne Gabriel. They're friendship makes me charish mine even more! I think it shows true friendship when Anne drops everything to go help Pete. I think in a way Pete needed Maddie to show him who he really truley loved. By almost marrying Maddie it made him see that he really loved Anne, not Maddie. Pete had to go through many difficult times in this book. He not only lost Maddie but he lost his uncle Leo too. Pete went to desperate measures to try to get Anne to feel the same way as he did for her, which in the end worked out for the best.
Reading this book makes me appreciate life and be thankful for what I all have. I will admit I tend to take life for granted and I think, whatever happens, happens. I now do not think that way anymore. You have to live while you're alive, is what I now think. Like Pete's feelings for Anne and how he couldn't tell her, I have the same problem. There are so many people I care for and love so much, but they don't know that and I wish so much that they did know. I just don't have the courage to tell them my honest feelings. With the help of this book I have been able to tell a lot of the people I care for, just how much I care for them. I owe it all to "Desperate Measures." Thank you!
Great Read.......2000-08-26
What a wonderful story. It warmed my heart. The story was about two best friends Pete and Annie. A coming of age story where they both search for their destiny and find out that they share what is most important. A heartwarming once in a life time friendship. Good book to chase away the blues.

Learn to be free and strong and self-sufficient.
This book is a continuation of my memoirs, Swimming Upstream: The Inside Cries of a Child. It recounts how I met my second husband and all of the events of our stormy marriage. I was so desperate for love that I endured all sorts of abuse and neglect and still couldn't bear to let him leave me alone. Now I want to tell everyone that prayer can fill loneliness, make a person strong and self-sufficient, overcome all of life's problems, and bring joy that no one can take away.
With masterfully described characters who seem to come alive, this true story is filled with spicy and engaging details and wisdom derived from lessons learned the hard way.

Book Description
In this insightful analysis of shooting and fighting instruction, noted firearms expert Ralph Mroz examines the myths and misinformation that plague the gun community. From the five deadly training traps to unrealistic training exercises to concealed-carry mistakes, Mroz offers solutions to help defensive shooters snap out of their routines and become better and safer with their firearms. Mroz, whose articles have appeared in Combat Handguns and Guns magazines, takes a no-nonsense approach to such topics as the need for empty-hands skills, range training vs. real-world training, the problem of range standards, understanding and developing startle recovery, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Too Critical - Offers little suggestions for improvement.......2007-08-15
This is one of those books that cuts down everything you see in handgun training, but offers little in the way of improvements. I did not get a lot of constructive information out of this book, but rather a lot of what is wrong, but little on how to fix it. I read the book twice, and gave it away.
good read.......2007-07-04
Thumbs up to Mroz for his essay about the uselessness of a tactical reload. One cannot resist but laugh at its utter stupidity until one realizes it is there to make instructors seem as worth your buck.
Fantastic Reading.......2007-02-10
This book forced me to think about shooting, training, and more in a different way: how can I make it work rather than how can I pass. Let's face it, passing is one thing; surviving is another. There are plenty of techniques that show you how to shoot targets. There are less that can show you how to live. While Mroz does not share the techniques with you, he sure makes you second-guess the ones you currently use. And that is a good thing because that second-guessing of training may save your life.
An Excellent Critique of Training Methods.......2006-12-11
This book is intended for instructors and those who view firearms from a martial arts perspective (not sport shooting). May be confusing for those who are not familiar with some of the common names/training methods: i.e. Farnam, Stanford, Suarez, Ayoob, etc...
Mroz asks questions and offers his opinions. He covers a wide variety of issues that are relevant to anyone who trains with firearms; the problem with range standards, five deadly training traps, limits of practical match training, myths of concealed carry, etc...
This book was not written to provide answers, but to make you think. That said, there are definitely some pearls of wisdom in here. For example, in the last chapter, Bert DuVernay says "There are no misses on the street. There are only unintended targets. Every bullet we launch hits something." Not a novel thought, but I like the way he said it.
A relatively short book (148 pages) that can be read in one or two sittings. He provides some footnotes to his chapters. A comprehensive reference list or recommended reading/viewing list is not included and would have made this book much better.
More opinion than training manual.......2006-06-26
This is an essay on the authors opinion about the current training methods. It is interesting and I agree with many of his points; but if you are looking for training material look elsewhere.

Culture Shock! Thailand.......2006-11-07
I can't tell you what I think... I ordered this book on July 18th 2006,every few weeks you would send me a notice that I would have to agree to wait or it would be cancelled. After 3 MONTHS you sent me a notice that it was not in stock, nor would you be re-ordering it. Excuse me if I don't gush with praise.
Aside from that I find your services quite helpful, thanks.
Very informative.......2006-08-06
Summer 2006 preparing for a trip to Thailand, we purchased several guidebooks and DVD's. Culture Shock Thailand was very informative and helpful. It included valueable information we did not find elsewhere. This book is mainly geared toward the business person planning an extended stay or relocation to Thailand. It was not designed for the traveler spending two weeks as a tourist. Overall a very good book.
Just what I need.......2006-03-21
Wow, found it. Just off to spend some months in and around Thailand -- and no doubt put yet another book on Thailand on the shelves -- when I get this recommended to me. Great stuff. Very informative, very funny, I mean in places really funny, and a bargain to boot. Slap up to date. Can't wait to enter the kingdom.
Culture comes allive and is fun.......2006-02-11
This book helped my whole family. We read it before arrival but are still using it for reference. It gave us useful leads to international schools, places of worship and hospitals when out of Bangkok. A mixture of the very practical: opening bank accounts, finding your way, doing business, and so on, and a comprehensive guide to Thai culture, with convenient sectionalisation, excellent explanations and situationist in that it places the non-Thai reader into the Thai world and helps him or her stay afloat. Excellent value. Up to date. Hard to think of anything it misses. Very lively. Well written. And makes learning culture fun. Can't ask for more than that.
Simply the best.......2006-01-28
Culture Shock Thailand, the updated 2005 version, is simply the best guide to contemporary Thai culture available today. It is also a one-stop shop for the expat in Thailand, or prospective expat, covering everything from health and education (with annotated listings of hospitals and schools in all main towns), opening bank accounts, getting married, and so on. The index could be expanded, but the well set out presentation of sectional text makes it easy to find what you are looking for -- and it is almost certainly there. This guide is also very well written and in a style that is both easy to read and funny. I enjoyed learning. Many books are now available on Thai culture, doing business, settling in, etc. This is simply the best.

You Will Be sure to alienate the Thai's with this book.......2000-06-23
Ms.Wise starts out by saying, "Thai's practise a form of Buddhism known as Theravada, also called Hinanyana". Hinanyana is a derogatory term meaning: lesser, despicable... The rest of the book is a mish-mash of Asian cultural mores that do not necessarily have anything to do with Thailand. If you need a tax write off for your business, by all means buy this book.
Don't Go To Thailand Without This Reading This Book.......2000-05-13
I have visited Thailand many times for both business and pleasure. I didn't read this book until I my fourth visit. It is very important to understand the do's and dont's in Thailand, which many Westerners tend to ignore. It opens the door of understanding for those new to the Thai mentality and way of life. It also has a very small section but good section explaining the influence of Buddism on daily life in Thailand. Definately buy this book if going there. If you are more business oriented I would suggest also reading "Doing Business With Thailand" (Global Business Series).

Good Basic Info.......2007-05-26
This was a good intro book to Thailand and it's culture with a little Thai history thrown in too. It is a fast read. Our daughter is in Thailand for 6 months through a study abroad program with her college...and my husband and I are planning to go there for 2 weeks this summer. We felt this book gave info that some of the other 'tour' books left out....as the title suggests, it includes customs and etiquette of the Thai people. I'd definitely recommend this book to all traveling to Thailand. (The only draw back is that it was written in 2003 and could be updated a bit.)

Don't buy this book - get Culture Shock! Thailand 2005 instead.......2006-01-10
I was interested in this book until I read Robert Cooper's review. Now I will not buy it, and there are good reasons for you not to, either.
1. Robert Cooper is the author of Culture Shock! Thailand, and uses his name on the review. I trust what he says is true - who would know better? - and he's putting his good name on the line.
2. There is a newly revised version of CS! T for 2005. Culture Smart! is older, does not have the revisions.
3. The definitive, updated, newly redesigned Culture Shock! Thailand for 2005 is about the same price as this out-of-date copy, and you can get an earlier edition (with similar text to this one?) for substantially less if money is tight.
theft.......2005-10-11
This book is a copy of Culture Shock! Thailand, A Guide to Customs and Etiquette, published by Times Editions, Singapore, first in 1982 and regularly updated. Rights to produce a US version of one edition of Culture Shock Thailand were sold to Kuperard years ago, this did not give them the right to reproduce the book with minimal changes. A great pity Amazon carries such theft.

Customer Reviews:
It was a story of total jealousy. Very exciting!.......1999-11-08
I thought this book was much like the real high schoolexperience. In HS all you want to do is fit in and that is the effectthat the author is trying in to the readers I believe. It is full of jealous teens trying to get though a tragic part of thier life. Yikes high school!
This book took me right back to High School in Southern Cal!.......1999-09-29
I loved this book. I could totally relate to the lead character and her friends. I remember this freedom that every teen thinks they have. And then you become an adult and a parent and realize what a cage you were actually in. Man we were so naive, but definitely thought otherwise! The author brings you right to the marina, I could smell that sea air! I don't recommend this book just to young adults, but to those who want to take a peek back! But, be careful boy's...like my husband you might fall in love with that high school babe all over again.
This is a funny, realistic book about high school!.......1999-04-24
I love McCants' characters. They're real - not the prom kings and queens, but teenagers who have everyday problems. The setting of Anything Can Happen in High School is also really cool - laid-back California. This isn't the deepest reading, but it's funny and obviously written by someone who understands teenagers.
