Customer Reviews:
Concise, To The Point.......2006-08-31
You'll find all the toipcs in this book in any big reference book on mountaineering. However, adding this book to your library won't do any harm.
The book starts off with a lesson on physical geography. Then, the various techniques on routefinding, team travel and anchors are covered. Unlike many of the bigger books on mountaineering, this book covers the essentials and does not confuse the novice. For instance, the knots and ropework are all pretty simplified. I have tried them out on the field and they all work fine.
My only complaint is that the illustrations look a bit sketchy on some pages.
The Bible of Glacier Travel.......2000-11-20
Crevasses are one of those things that many of us who climb wish we didn't have to deal with. Unfortunately many people go out and climb while totally unprepared. Indeed they choose to not deal with it, and take enormous risks.
In this book Andy will give you the scoop on everything you ever wanted to know related to glacier travel. He starts by explaining what glaciers are, then he gets more into detail on how to routefind, traveling as a group, and of course how to perform crevasse rescue.
My honest opinion is that this book is not, by itself, going to make you an expert on the subject. I really don't think any book can. You need to get some training, be it with an experienced friend or established school but this book will show you all the techniques that you'll learn. Plus if you already know it can help you brush up and possibly show you new techniques. Great book, very typical high quality stuff from The Mountaineers.
A first-hand teacher.......2000-04-18
As someone who is fairly new to mouutainering and glacier travel, I found the wonderfully helpfulmin explaining important technequies, that are crucial to any body finding their adventures leading them to the mountains. I found it extermly helpful when I actually set foot on the ice.

If you travel by air you need this book!.......1998-11-25
If you fly, you will get some great information from "The Flying Smart Handbook". It is easy reading and takes you from the time you decide to fly, to the airport, to the the flight, and even to the hotel. Captain Horgan advises the use of a travel agent, explains why, and even gives you his insight regarding many of the noises and delays you may encounter. Other subjects covered include checking your luggage, what airport security is all about, what to do with pets, and what is really going on during taxi, takeoff, climb, descent, and landing. I have been traveling for over thirty years and the book answered many questions and corrected some false assumptions that I have had. It is in an easy reading format. Congratulations to the Captain for informing us, in language we can all understand, what is really happening up there.
Very Inforemative 7 very well written.......1998-11-17
As an individual who has traveled throughout the world I picked up this book just to see what I didn't know. Let me tell you the tips and info I got from the book was outstanding. The book was very well written and should be a must for the unexperienced travel as well as the seasoned traveler/

Inviting Porches: 210 Home Plans With Perfect Porches
ASIN: 006084728X
Release Date: 2006-04-04 |
Book Description
Porches not only provide a practical function by extending living and entertaining space, but they also fulfill aesthetic and social needs by exuding a sense of welcome and creating an appealing transition from indoor to outdoor. In Dream Porches and Sunrooms, homeowners are invited to discover the simple pleasures these additions can bring to their life by envisioning the various design possibilities available as well as gaining an overview of the porch creation process.
This highly-visual resource book overflows with vibrant color photography showcasing diverse outdoor additions in a variety of exterior styles arranged by purpose (dining, entertaining, relaxing, etc.) and location (city, suburbs, small town, waterfront), demonstrating how homeowners can select a design to suit their particular living space and needs. Sketched plan diagrams are included with many of the photos, and an in-depth chapter on the elements of "porch style" encompasses a wealth of decorative options for further inspiration.
Dream Porches and Sunrooms also highlights the important practical considerations to take into account before embarking on a porch project and selecting a suitable design. It concludes with a final chapter outlining the key choices and elements involved in the porch construction process, rendering them in a clear, concise manner using a mix of text and pictorial examples along with helpful checklists and sidebars.
Customer Reviews:
Misleading Title; Disappointing Contents.......2007-06-18
Though the word "sunrooms" is included in the title, there are fewer than five sunrooms featured in this book.
Most of the featured houses would cost $3-5million if purchased in California. The porch on the front cover is illustrative of the porches featured inside. If you can't afford the house that goes with that porch, you won't be able to afford the porches on the interior either.
This complaint is no small matter--the issues that arise in trying to make the most of limited space with a limited budget are different from the issues faced by a multi-millionaire designing a dream house with a dream view.
The self-congratulatory text concludes, "You've seen spectacular examples of porch design and been directed to the details that set them apart. Along the way, you've witnessed what is possible no matter the circumstances, regardless of the size of a house." I disagree.

A Perfect book for sleigh riding enthusiasts.......2004-06-09
My 3 and 4 year olds love this book. We go to sleigh riding way up North in Canada every year and they can definately relate to this story. My 4 year old son said, I wish I can be like the bear. The bear, you see, ends up being the sleigh for 4 of his friends on the perfect day for riding down the mountain. The illustrations are precious and the story is perfect. There's also a surprise fold-out page...so much fun!

"Chuck and Travis painted Nazi swastikas and 'Kill Kikes' in large dripping orange letters across the front of the house. Then they turned to me. 'Let her rip, Campbell,' Chuck said.... I opened fire and felt the exploding power of each bullet as it left the gun. No one could be stronger than I was at that moment."
Ben Campbell, 17, is angry. Angry at having to live in a broken-down trailer park. Angry that his unemployed dad isn't a respected ranch boss any more. Angry at having to defend his exasperating younger brother, David. Most of all, angry at the rich kids at school who seem to get away with everything. Only when he's out with Chuck and Travis, burning a Jew lawyer's car or shooting up a synagogue, does he feel powerful and in control again.
It was his dad who got them all going to the meetings of the Guardians of the Identity, where Lonn explained how all their troubles were because of the Jews and the blacks and the homosexuals, and how they had to keep those people from moving into their little Montana town. Ben knows that isn't right, but still, he needs to feel that power. But when he falls in love with Eden Taylor he knows he wants to move beyond Lonn's ideas, and when David gets involved in his place, Ben realizes he must take a stand. This taut, intense, first YA novel by newcomer Nora Martin is as bracing as the Montana snow that blankets the story. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

Customer Reviews:
A Close to Perfect Story.......2003-03-07
Powerful and fast-paced, Nora Martin's "A Perfect Snow" documents a season in the life of 17-year old Benjamin Campbell. After Ben's dad loses his ranching job, the family is forced to move into a dilapidated trailer where they are trying to adjust to their new lives. For Ben, who has always been a popular football player and clearly the favorite son, this adjustment is an uneasy one that results in a gripping coming of age story. Meanwhile, his brother, David, who has always been on the sidelines, eventually finds life in rural Montana the easiest it's ever been for him. Just a few months into the school year, and already fed up with being treated like second-class citizens, the boys discover Lodgette's dark side. Ben quickly becomes immersed in the hate-filled subculture and encourages his brother to do the same; when he sees his brother participating in the shootings and vandalism, he realizes just how wrong these activities are. As a result, he spends the rest of the winter trying to get David back on the right path without revealing his participation in the town's sordid events to his parents and two unlikely allies.
From the in media res beginning, the story grabs the reader and doesn't let go until the very end. In addition to the main storyline, there are a couple of other side stories going on between Ben and his new friends, but the occasional jarring language of the primary story always reminds the reader what the story is really about: the destructive nature of hate and that acceptance of one's self leads to acceptance of others. Despite Martin's tremendous use of metaphor and poetic language, the story does contain a few flaws, some of which may be related to its length. First, character development is weak even with the protagonist - this could perhaps be solved in a few extra pages. Just as quickly as Ben falls for the white supremacist rhetoric of Guardians of the Identity, he wants out and believes their activities are immoral and unethical. This leads the reader to wonder if perhaps he had gone to a meeting on another day, whether or not their venomous beliefs would have had the same impact on him. On a similar note, while the father is aghast at what his sons have been up to, he is the one that encouraged them to go the meetings and never chastised David for his racial slurs. David is the only one that is believable as a hate-monger because of all the characters, he is clearly the one with the most self-esteem issues and has the most to gain by behaving in such a manner. It is all a bit too neatly packaged, but again, with only 144 pages, there is not much room for any lengthy plot or character development. Also, Martin fails to give a conclusion to David's story/problem, leaving the reader wondering what became of him. While one of the points of the book is to show young readers there are consequences for their actions, this lack of a conclusion fails to show there is a penalty for violence.
"A Perfect Snow" is ideally suited to the post-Columbine/9-11 classroom. It is important that issues such as teen violence and racial hate crimes be dealt with in these unsettling times in an effort to prevent such things from happening. Like S.E. Hinton's "The Outsiders", "A Perfect Snow" deals with the problems that occur in socioeconomically diverse high schools, but Martin also addresses the larger matters of racism and homophobia. Though not as well-written as Hinton's book or Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird", this text would be a suitable alternative or complement to them. In addition to introducing diversity and ethics into the classroom, Ben's actions in the book can help students learn of the personal worth one can find in helping others and community service. The length of the book and Martin's easy, engaging style make it appropriate for a variety of grade levels between middle and high school. Finally, it can even be of value to parents because it allows them the opportunity to see that even if they don't encourage racism in the home, by not discouraging such bigotry and intolerance, kids are susceptible to groups like Guardians of the Identity.
While not a must-read, "A Perfect Snow" is certainly a good read. It packs a powerful punch in its small size and librarian/writer Nora Martin should be pleased with her work.
