Book Description
Celtic designs are among the most popular for tattoos on both sides of the Atlantic, a cutting-edge trend that actually began in pre-Roman times to frighten opponents in battle. This stylish reference explores the history of the intricate, evocative designs of the ancient Celts, offering many ideas to help readers create their own images, from icons of Celtic art such as dragons and crosses, to torcs, spirals, and key patterns. Complete step-by-step instructions for designing one-of-a-kind Celtic knotwork patterns are included, as is full information on creating temporary tattoos with henna or body paint. All patterns can be traced and enlarged to adorn any part of the body.
Customer Reviews:
So so.......2007-05-14
I love celtic tattoos, and I was expecting a book written on the celtic tattoos you find on the people this days. On the other hand, it talks about the tattoos the Kells made on themselves, and not really in a historical way, but in a estetical way (how they look, and what were the variations of their tattoos a thousand years ago). Honestly, it's good paper, but not much printed on it, and the best tattoo you'll see on the book is on the front page.
Unfortunate Purchase..........2006-09-20
I am in the process of going to a Celtic tattoo specialist @ Lucky Fish Tattoo in Santa Barbara, CA. I have 1 celtic tattoo, 10 total tattoos and in a month will have a custom celtic tattoo done. I have been waiting to get this book for a bazillion months and when I finally did I found it to be the biggest waste of time. I never imagined with the great subject matter that a book could be more insignifigant. The designs lack uniqueness in the book, there are few, and they also lack the detail of the meaning. This book trys to take the beautiful and amazing art of tattooing celtic design and verbalize it and use black and white pictures. Wasted $$ and time.
Don't be disappointed.......2003-12-28
This was written as the 3,000 word booklet to accompany the Celtic Tattoo Gift Pack, and as such wasn't aimed at serious tattooists. The aim was to give an idea of the 'look and feel' of celtic art, though trying to do that without any colour seems to miss most of the beauty. The lack of colour or even any celtic art on the cover should be a giveaway.
If the idea of celtic tattoo transfers interests you have a look at the Celtic Tattoo Pack here at amazon.
If you're a serious tattoo artist buy George Bain's 'Celtic Art', the classic bible on the subject and explore the web for the modern variations.
I was given 3 weeks to write and draw this booklet and don't get royalties, so can honestly say that you can do better than this - I did.
dissapointing.......2003-09-11
I was really dissapointed with this book. I have one tattoo and have been trying to design a few more, based on Celtic Art. I bought this book with the intention that it would give a broad array of spiral, circular, and knotwork designs that I could use for inspiration, or even just copy to use.
What I got was a 70 page "book" that looks more like a pamphlet, with about 15 pages total of designs....most of them very common that I've already seen and could have gotten off a cheap internet site.
Not to mention that they are all very small, in black and white, and not clear detail.
There is some useful information on how to draw your own knotwork, which I might use...but I'm going to have to buy another book to get what I want. I should have spent my money elsewhere, and you should too.

A Disappointment.......2000-01-16
I purchased this book as I was making the set from mehndi into woading hoping it might give me some pointers. It didn't. The brief chapters keep repeating themselves on how no one knows what woading really was. The designs are too complexed to ever be painted with anything but temporary tattoo ink or other paints. The kit includes a third rate plastic paintbrush and two small vials (black and blue) of body paint. No temporary tattoo ink for all the money the kit costs.
Anti-art for lazy people.......1999-11-21
Paint if you want to paint. Get inked if you want, but don't be lazy and use other people's stencils and stains to sport a dyed patch of skin for a month. Pathetic waste of time and money - use your time to read something which will stimulate your brain
Good book, could have been better.......1999-08-25
I enjoyed the book as far as the basic suggestions went, and the six transfers that were included with the book were very useful. It would have been vastly improved had there been more information on where to buy body-art supplies (temporary tattoo paint, henna, woad, etc) BESIDES through the author's company. Also, I found the ice-cream pastel colors and rebelliously trendy models a bit overdone as far as basic book design. For pure "information", the book is decent, at best.

"Where history ends, storytelling begins," writes Jane Yolen in her author's note to this exciting novel based on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. Only a few facts are known about Mary's young female jester, le Jardiniere, but Yolen and her collaborator, Scottish writer Robert Harris, have created a fascinating girl narrator based on this historical oddity. Le Jardiniere relates the true and tragic tale of the ill-fated 16th-century queen of Scotland.
In 1559, when a ragtag troupe of traveling entertainers is snatched from the sodden streets of Rheims to amuse the bored visiting French court, 13-year-old Nicola Ambruzzi impresses the queen with her wit and honesty. The beautiful young Mary takes the girl under her protection as "the queen's own fool," commissioned to speak the truth boldly amid the fawning lies and schemes of the courtiers. Around them swarm secret plots, duplicity, and betrayal; death is a constant threat.
After her weak boy-husband King Francis dies, the kindhearted Mary is unwilling to hear Nicola speak the truth about her suitors. She experiences two disastrous marriages, first with the handsome wastrel Darnley and then--for political expediency--with his murderer, the treacherous Bothwell. When he plots against her, she must flee back to Scotland to try to resume her throne in the midst of swirling conflict between the Protestant lords and their Catholic rulers. Nicola's wit and daring get them through some dangerous situations, but Mary is eventually imprisoned in the stark castle of Lochleven, where their hairsbreadth attempts at escape wind up a story from history as exciting and deeply affecting as any of Yolen's fantasy novels. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Nicola Ambruzzi, a poor traveling player, is an unlikely person to end up "fool"and friend to Mary Queen of Scots. But tumbling and clowning at court, she catches the young queen's eye and heart. As Mary is caught in the winds of fate--running from France to Scotland, confronted by rebellious lords and her unpredictable Scots, Nicola--Le Jardiniere--is there, buffeting and aiding the queen with her wit and wiles.
This epic adventure by Jane Yolen and Robert Harris takes us into the intimate circle of one of the most intriguing queens of all time, the courageous Mary Queen of Scots.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful historical fiction.......2006-10-19
Most people know a lot about Queen Elizabeth I. Few people know much about Queen Mary of Scotland. This is a story about Mary and her fascinating history.
This is historical fiction at its best; the book sticks to true facts very closely and tells of a story that is not well known. I loved this book. I loved that there was a story out there about Mary Queen of Scots, and that this book was also wonderfully written. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. The reader gets a clear idea of what it was like then, and they also get to learn all about an incredible woman.
The story describes Mary's first marriage, then continues to describe her return to Scotland from France. Nicola, the queen's "fool", is the narrarator who tells the story. She is very close to Mary and tells us everything that goes on in Mary's life. After they return to Scotland, Mary (I'm not spoiling the story; it's history, and this is how it happened) married twice more, both times awful marriages that only caused harm.
Besides the fact that the history is really cool, it's also great how it's written. So go on. Read it, read it! It's so easy to love.
A Wonderful Book!.......2006-10-04
I loved this book! I bought it from our library's used book sale, I figured it might at best give me some background for my son's history study this year. I was so impressed! I read it in about 3 days, and highly recommend it.
The story is told through the eyes of the female "fool", or jester, of Mary Queen of Scots, Nicola Ambruzi (La Jardinierre, the Garden Girl). While we don't know much about her, we do know from court documents that she existed, and that she was the favored fool of Mary. The novel delves into so many known historical events, telling them from a completely personal point of view. The historical fact-finding is incredible, and the plot and character personalities are sure to involve even a reluctant reader, right from the start.
This book gets my highest recommendation - I will even be reading most of it with my son (4th grade) later this year, to help him understand the politics, beliefs and court life of the late Middle Ages.
My first love!.......2005-11-15
When I was in high school, I hated to read teen magazines much less real books. I struggled with a learning disorder and was stuck at a low reading level so I could never enjoy reading. My mom checked this book out at the library for me with little hope that would read it. It was strange but I just picked it up and started reading. I kept reading and turning the pages and I just couldn't put it down! I found it so incredibly captivating! I loved it so much! I never thought I'd enjoy reading so much. After that I started picking up more and more books and my reading level shot straight up! This may seem off topic but believe me, this book helped me sooo much! It really is my first love!
A Fantastic Piece of Historical Fiction!.......2005-09-26
I have to say that I absolutely LOOOVVEE this book!! It only took me two days (And nights of late night reading) to finish and I could barely force myself to put it down. This is a masterful tale and brilliantly written. I HIGHLY recommend it.
An excellent Historical Fiction novel.......2005-09-09
This was a fantastic book. The characters were cool, the setting was very nice, and I loved the character of Nicola!
This book is about a girl who becomes the fool (this is similar to a court jester) of Mary, Queen of Scots. It follows her through Mary's sad story, right up to the flight to England.
Overall, I recommend this book to any historical fiction fan interested in this period.
