Joe Newton is the GOLD STANDARD when it comes to coaching high school cross country. Year in and year out his teams challenge for state and national titles. This book is not as good as the "Long Green Line" but that is THE book on high school cross country. This book stands by itself as an excellent, practical guide for coach, fan and runner. It is broken into easy to read sections and full of interesting antedotes. Joe Newton gives solid insight into his highly successful progam.

Coach Joe Newton is a great coach, infact, I have ran for him, his coaching is the best that you could wish for. If I were buying this just by his track record it would be highly recomended! He is without doubt in my mind the best coach of Cross Crunty in history, if not all sports.

Excellent Ornament Making Source!.......2006-01-25

COtM is a fabulous source of inspiration when it comes to making ornaments. The photos show each project in its final stage, a few have diagrams to show folding technique, and for those projects using a pattern, one is provided (although you'll have to enlarge at times). The projects are great for beginner and intermediate crafters as the directions mostly involve glue, ribbon, beads, glitter and paint. There are a few advanced projects but those mostly deal with oven and/or air dry clay. These are great rainy-day projects the whole family can enjoy because the instructions tell you all the items you will need and most are only 4 step processes. Finally, for those who feel their place is in a hardware store rather than a craft store, there are even projects for you! Various non-traditional elements are used to make some of the lovely ornaments too. Well worth a purchase.

What a Bargain!.......2003-11-18

I have had a blast knitting Christmas stockings for the whole family with this book. The great thing is, with one book, you have almost unlimited patterns available (much cheaper than buying a kit or a pattern for each stocking!), and yet everyone can choose a pattern that expresses his or her individuality. My husband chose the simple "Rustic Lodge" stocking, while I wanted the more challenging "Lace Brocade." And with the mix-and-match stocking, you really could have endless possibilities. The instructions were clear, although even when you use the exact yarn and needles described, check your gauge (you can't be off when you're knitting on a circular needle!).

One bonus about this book: almost every pattern has a slightly different way to turn a heel (and none of them are done with seams -- they're all knit in the round like real socks). If you have ambitions about being a sock knitter, this is an excellent place to start, since you can practice the techniques without the sock ever having to be comfortable enough to wear!

Great Stocking Patterns.......2003-10-09

I loved this book much like it's counter parts, Knit Mittens and Knit Hats. I have made 6 stockings so far and intend to knit more. The patterns are explicit enough for the novice knitter. However there are patterns for the experienced knitter as well. I enjoy the shape of these books (they take me back to my childhood). I highly recommend this book. The "elves" have done well with this one. Merry Christmas!

It definitively covers Dresden ornaments, and ornaments made of glass, paper, fabrice, metal, wax, and more. Unless, you are already familiar with celtic artwork, really familiar, I definitely would not recommend this book. This is definitely not for beginners. Directions are not very detailed. If you can figure out how to do the examples, though, it creates some very beautiful designs.

This book is excellent to teach middle school students the art of origami. There are many different designs that students will enjoy. Students enjoy origami with complicated folds and this one has several ones.

A great ornament book!.......2001-12-15

I don't agree with the review saying there were problems. I have made the Lantern and many others without any problems. The instructions are very clear and the results are great looking! I especially like the fact that they are "pure" origami (no glue or cutting required).

However, it definately would have been nice to have actual photographs of the finished products. But this is still the best book I have found for making ornaments and/or balls. It is a lot better than "Kusudama : Ball Origami" which required glue and/or string for several of the models.

Very good but with problems.......2001-06-11

Kusudams without glue: a pleasure! I made the Two-Dimesional icon ,Three-Dimensional icon, Where's up? (i very love this last) (7 squares for all). The Cube (20 squares) is wonderful because it have something as wings.The Magic cube (14 squares) look good too. The Tristar (6 squares) need a pair of tweezers but his form is very pleasant (triangle). But i had some problems with others. The Lantern and the Lightstar lantern didn't need squares the same size! This book haven't pictures inside. When i'll made others kusudamas i'll write to tell what i think of the rest.

This book has very clear explanations, and nice designs. No actual photographs of the projects, except the ones in the cover, which is why I rated it 4 stars. Having photos of the actual projects would have helped a lot in the construction of these models.
