Beware of the digital upgrade.......2007-09-05

I wanted to forwarn other users, especially students, of the pitfalls of the digital upgrade option:

1) Don't buy the upgrade if you're hoping to get access to it through the library computers, instead of having to lug the massive book to school. Apparently, you cannot view any online book from more than 7 different computers within a 30 day period. And, consequently, if the cache happens to get cleared after each session (as is the case with most shared computers), then you're limited to only 7 sessions with ANY computer.

2) Beware that the book is hard to read online. It's great for adding annotations (highlighting text, adding bookmarks, typing notes, etc.), but it's a real strain on the eyes if you try to read a full chapter. The text is low contrast (gray on white) and low resolution. Even when you use the Zoom-in feature (which lets you increase the size a little bit), it's still hard on the eyes. The text is still just blurry enough to make you think you might need glasses. After several chapters, you probably will need glasses :-)

You can check the quality first by viewing the Preview. That's representative of the whole book. Try reading an entire page and decide for yourself. On the plus side, if you do buy the book, and realize that these issues really do pose a problem for you, Amazon lets you request a refund, as long as you have viewed less than 20% of the book. 20% of 1300 pages is a lot, so you should be fine.

From Start to End.......2007-03-28

This is a great educational text. Each chapter starts from cellular level and progresses to the functional and clinical level. Being a chiropractor and working with the spine everyday I need to understand exactly where the problem starts and not focus on the symptoms. This text has allowed me to understand what is neurophysiologically going on with my patients and improve their course of treatment. As described the neurological system is the electricity of the body and if a fuse decides to blow you need to know where to look.

Impressive for a textbook.......2007-02-13

As far as textbooks go, this has to be one of the best that I have come across...and I have come across quite a few. The material is divided into closely related sections, and the text is clear and to the point in its explanation. Not much filler text or needless material. The diagrams are pretty clear and well positioned in the sections also.

Great Reference Book.......2007-01-06

The text is extremely clear and to the point. The diagrams are also simple to understand. Every major topic in neurosci is discussed, allowing you to get an excellent foundation such that you could read any recent publications on that topic and understand completely what the authors are referring to.

A Masterful Medical Book of Great Importance Written by a Nobel Laureate!.......2006-06-07

I am a Female Reconstructive Surgeon who while reading a diversified field of topics have fallen very fond of a particular work. This is Principles of Neural Science. having just completed the 2000 edition I can guarrantee that the new edition due June 2006 will be even more captivatiing. If you have the opportunity to see Dr Kandel speak please do he is an academic historian who gives a broad history of each critical piece of medical history to each of his topics. But returning to his epic, Principles of Neural Science is akin to Newtons Principia in that is a sublime masterpiece. The Kandell prose is colorful, smooth and insightful for medical science. I have found it easy to read 100-200 pages a day so that the 1400 page book took only a week to discover. The illustrations are the best for any field of Medicine and I have read alll the classics- Harrisions & Cecils Medicine and Schwartz and Sabistons General Surgery neither of these books elucidates the subjugate field with this type of clarity and instructional prose. Do as I have done and preorder the new edition. Those with any interest in the brain will certainly be amazed at the easy depth of information you will achieve. Believe me I am writing a book -Female Reconstructive Surgery and I will be implementing operative 17.2 million pixel photography to achieve the splendid vision the Kandel has produced with his illustrations. I have learned so much on how a book for Surgeons should be written from this Nobel Laureate

It's a great book,definitely.Interesting and easy to understand,it's the best for a starter-a scientest to be.On the other hand,it's not lacking depth at all.What makes it more informative is that it provides lots of clinical studies where you have a real feeling of human cancer.

Two thumbs up........2003-06-14

This book contains a collection of excellent reviews on various signalling molecules. It examines the most important singaling pathways in cells and provides an clear understanding of the differnt compenents of each pathway and their complex interactions. Excellent reference for any researcher interested in signaling and a great starting place for a comprehensive review on the topic of your interest. I approached this book as primer for signaling pathways before I embarked on graduate studies. It helped me a lot in gaining an understanding of the Wnt pathway, which I was interested in. However, the same can be accomplished by using reviews from peer reviewed journals. I think the the most wonderful thing about this book is that it covers most of the important signaling pathways extensively in a single volume. The drawback is that this is not an introductory text. Highly recommended for graduate students interested in signaling but who already have an understanding of the basic concepts.

Great Book.......2007-10-14

Primitive Wilderness Living and Survival Skills.......2007-10-12

The book is a compilation first published in 1993 from a series of 10 booklets the author published from 1986 to 1992. It is very idiosyncratic in writing style, bordering at times on the semi-literate or at least the pretense of it. According to the author, at the time of writing there was not much published on primitive living skills. The mountain man reenactors would have been one group eager for information, and this may account for the writing style as much as anything, although clearly no critical editor was involved in the final composition of the text.

McPherson began merely with the intention of a writing a book on brain tanning buckskin, and over the years worked to expand his publications into a series on primitive living skills, finally publishing them together in a single volume. The book covers brain tan buckskin, the bow drill and hand drill, cordage, the bow and arrow, traps, the spear throwing atlatl, meat preservation, cooking, butchering a deer, baskets and other containers, clay pots, tools from stone and other natural materials, and shelters. There is no information on edible plants.

There is an abundance of photos (over 700 according to the blurb on the back), and McPherson is an avid practitioner of the skills he teaches; but the long term value of the book varies among the chapters. At times he relies on the photos to instruct us, rather than taking the time to articulate what it is he knows. Some times this is good enough, at other times it's not. If he would not have had a ready audience for each of the chapter length booklets he published, he just may have put in the effort to write a better book.

This book is so well written, covering so many primitive skills, that a student could spend years just working off this book alone. In my opinion, this is the best out there.

First read some of these booklets when I was learning brain tanning etc. from Jim Riggs (Blue Mountain Buckskin: A Working Manual For Dry-scrape Braintan; another must-have book). I remember learning the dead falls and finding them the best (I have experimented with others). Since I had no money and little food they were also practical. In fact I got obsessed with the Paiute deadfall and the one by Henry Rhyne. I thought it was amazing to toss a pine needle on a trigger and watch a rock slam down like a guillotine. There are a lot of books out there with traps of dubious quality or time-consuming construction. These truly work if you are hungry.

Excellent Guide.......2000-08-23

I actually found this book in Greece as I was leading of tour along the path of Paul's missionary journeys. As I examined the book I was sorry that I hadn't had access to it before I left on the trip...it provided excellent biblical and cultural insight into each of the places that we visited (Thessaloniki, Philippi, Corinth, Athens, Ephesus). It is the kind of thorough guide that every busy pastor hopes to find that will make his/her work a little bit easier. It is not a lengthy book but the information is sufficient for the background one needs to learn about the places Paul (and we) traveled.
