Book Description
Boat Docking (Close Quarters Maneuvering for Small Craft) is a book about how to dock a boat!
It contains many concrete examples of boat docking, from the elementary to the advanced, and also has chapters discussing the theory of close quarters maneuvering. The book is comprehensive, yet achieves its depth using language and tone which are accessible and minimally technical.
Although Boat Docking can be read through from start to finish, each of its various sections also stands alone, so items of interest may be referred to individually.
Boat Docking contains an "Overview" section, followed by a chapter describing every basic docking example imaginable, and most of the esoteric ones. Other chapters explain the interactions of the hull with water and air, how a boat steers (it's not completely straightforward!), how to use lines and fenders (there is more to good line work than one would think), and then there is a short section on the psychology and sociology of docking. Don't worry, it's fun to read! The conclusion draws an intriguing parallel between boat docking and affairs of the heart, using an extended metaphor on "close quarters maneuvering"!
If there's anything important to say about close quarters maneuvering, you'll find it in Boat Docking.
Customer Reviews:
Quick read.......2007-10-13
This book proved to be very useful, filled with practical information with a little humor salted in. My initial criticism was that the book is geared more to single engine boats than twin screws, but I realized as I read on that the single engine basics, once understood, more than apply to twin engine boats. This is a quick read and a couple of hours spent with this book will save you hundreds of hours (and dollars) of boat and dock repair!
Great Book.......2007-06-12
This is a great book with humor in it. Its loaded with information. By admitting that docking is difficult, it sets the stage for the reader to understand the challenges of docking.
Well worth the price.
Lacking Technique.......2007-02-18
I was disappointed with and returned this particular book for a refund. Very little inside concerning twin engine inboard operation.
Boat Docking (Close Quarters Maneuvering for Small Craft).......2007-01-04
Being new to twin engine power boating, I found this book to be very helpful. I have read it three or four times in the first month and keep it as a reference. It is extremely helpful in explaining how to dock and "undock" in differing wind conditions.
Great book.......2006-07-06
Good enough that I have sent a few copies to friend that needed "help" docking
Book Description
No boater should leave the dock without reading this unique guide to the basics of boating. Roger Siminoff's decades of experience are boiled down into valuable, even life-saving advice on safety aboard...navigation...anchoring...dinghies...maintenance... sailing at night...and heavy weather.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Review but Not Enough Practical Information.......2006-10-09
This book gives a reasonably good review about boating (but not about boat ownership, see below). It discusses things like safety, navigation, anchoring and docking. Much of it was based on larger sailboats although some of it does apply to boats of all sizes. I was disappointed at the illustrations and pictures that look like they date back to 1970. No color pictures.
But there was little practical advice about day to day boating, which was what I was looking for. Briefly, I wanted to know things like:
1. boat cleaning advice (what best to use)
2. when and how long to run bilge pump
3. tying knots
4. winter storage
5. basic Coast Guard regulations
So the book wasn't bad but was a bit disappointing for beginner boat owner.
Great book for those completely new to boating........2005-09-02
The title says it all...
It was easy to read and the author answers alot of questions you might be too embarrassed to ask.
Great summary of what you REALLY need to know!.......2002-09-11
You can wade through several 200+ page books and get some of the information contained in this one, but this book gives you what you really need to know (and the information is a lot easier to discern than from those big books). So many beginner's books don't really deal with what you have to know, such as docking, anchoring, rules of the road, reading a chart, use of the radio, heavy weather, etc. This is not a "how to sail book." But sailors, like all boaters, must know the knowledge of seamanship contained in this book to be safe and enjoy themselves and unfortunately many on the water do not. I've sailed for many years, have taken several classes, etc. and this is the book I recommend to everyone new to boating or for a review.
Not for small-medium power boats.......2002-05-26
Perhaps useful if you own a large sailboat, but not very relevant for a lake-bound 23' powerboat. Expected more diagrams.
Covers Everything.......2000-03-18
I took my wife and kids to Tortola this past winter, and bareboat charted a sail boat. I had read through many books on boating, but this one was by far the best. It gave me all the knowledge to enjoy my boating experience without getting into the usual trouble a amatuer would find themselves in. I would recommend this book to anyone, definatley worth the price
Product Description
Forget the why's of boat docking; this book is filled with the how to's that will lead you to dock your boat successfully, even in wind and/or current. It presents the "local knowledge" of the authors in an easily understood, and simply implemented, 7-step process. For helmsmen/women with single-engine inboard vessels, power or sail; twin-engine inboard and outboard vessels; single-engine outboard or inboard/outboard or stern-drive vessels.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for both experienced and novice boaters.......2007-07-30
Even though I have been boating for years, I was still able to learn a few new techniques that has helped handling our larger boat. The diagrams and text were easy to follow and understand.
Very informative.......2007-02-20
Cant wait for the ice to melt so that I can apply the lessons hands-on.

Customer Reviews:
Great tips for your sailboat.......2001-04-07
You will find "Best of Sail Magazine's Things that Work" a very good publication with 200 tips that were tested by sailboat owner over the years. They cover tips for maintenance, modifications, and techniques. The tips are nicely described and have excellent illustrations that are complimentary. I have used a number of these on my Catalina 27 and have been very please with the publication and refer to it periodically. If you have a sailboat and like to improve and make it more efficient then this publication is good for you.

The best of six.......2003-01-14
I borrowed and read six New Orleans travel guides from the library before our trip. This one was far and away the best. It's always good to read from more than one source before traveling, but if I were to pick just one for New Orleans, this would be it.
An OK intro to the Big Easy.......2001-10-17
Funny and helpful, but it did recommend a hotel we stayed at that really [STUNK]! This hotel was so bad that a tour group of 30 that had just arrived via bus, was getting back on the bus an hour later. Get a Frommer's or Access New Orleans guide instead!
Book Description
At 17, Dewey Daniels is fed up with his boring high school and decides to drop out, taking a part-time job at Richmond Valley Hospital. one day he catches fellow dropout Yvette Goethals stealing hospital supplies, and it's lust at first sight. But Yvette and Dewey are like night and day: she's a vegetarian and couldn't care less about a romantic commitment; he loves cheeseburgers and can't get Yvette out of his mind. By the time these two get through with each other, will true love ever be the same?
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Performance!!!.......2007-07-18
Well, I read this book when it was first released (1970's)and it's simply before it's time. You don't find many young adults who are "IN TUNED" with themselves. Dewey and Yvette are very advanced compared to the
'CLUELESS" teens of today. They have no cause to dropout of school and no clue to finding employment! Great Read!!! Great Book!!!
Dark teenage crushes.......2006-07-03
I Never Loved Your Mind follows Dewey who has just dropped out of high school. His first week at work he notices Yvette, who has a nice body, is a vegetarian, and steals things. Throughout the rest of the book he chases her. She seems at times to be falling in love but most of the time seems to dislike him very much because he eats meat and because of all the lifestyle and viewpoint differences. The plot sounds kind of dull, but the book is good. It has more of a mood than a plot. Things happen, but the big picture doesn't change - it just gets more detailed.
The book is a little dated. Yvette is pretty much a hippie, and large parts of the story are set in her world of communes, obsessing about saving animals, and being in touch with her body.
This was a good read. It's marketed for young adult, but I was fine reading it as an adult. It has a strong mood. Also, because the subject matter has lots of sex references, this probably really is young adult and not just a child's book with a bigger vocabulary. So don't give it to a really smart 7 year old.
the wonderous furious rebel........2003-12-02
it's a shame that more holden caulfield refugees do not happen to seek shelter in this book that often, because it is wonderful.dewey daniels is a wunderkind. cocky, handsome, the epitome of angst and with enough brains to spare, he takes it upon himself to drop out of school (which let's face it, if you really know the basics, is a waste of time) and begins working at a hospital where he meets hippie, vegetarian, lovely, ice queen yvette whom is also a dropout.and boy chases girl hijinks ensue.this book is rather dated but in a lovely way, and is really witty for a teenage marketed book.cheers.
liked it.......2002-12-30
I liked this book, but found some parts of it depressing, Pual Zindels work is like that, I've found. This book is reminicent of the Catcher in the Rye, something about the style is similar. I wanted to buy a copy of Pardon me You're Stepping on my Eyeball because I thought it was a sequel but sadly it's not.
Absolutley brilliant.......2000-08-27
This book was simply a work of genius. The characters of Dewey and Yvette were completely plausible in the era in which the book was written, and the story is excellant. Although it has to be read slowly and with a dictionary (at times), it is utterly worth it. Great for first-time readers of Paul Zindel.

true.......2000-03-30
This book is great. Like always Paul Zindel really gets into the minds of his characters. Ignore the covering of the book if it's the Bantam Starfire edition which makes it look like a fourth rate young adult book. The book's hilarious. Being a high school student myself I identify with these characters and definitely can see why these Yvette and him dropped out. This book is definitely not trying to kiss up to the school system. Most of the young adults books do, which makes this book step above the others.
