This is the most scientifically rigorous and complete books on recently discovered large animals -- such as the Pleistocene Peccary (the largest of all hogs, believed to have been extinct since the last age but recently discovered in Paraguay) -- to various possibly soon-to-be discovered megafauna such as Yetis, Sasquatchs -- and maybe even Mammoths.
If sensationalized and cheap TV shows about "mysterious animals" nauseate you, but nonetheless leave you with a nagging feeling that there might be a large critter lurking beneath the copious serving of tripe, this is definitely the book for you. Or if (like me) you've done eight years of fieldwork in zoology, it will make you want to accompany Dr. Heuvelmans on his next expedition. Highly Recommended.

I searched and searched for this book. My search was almost more difficult than finding a real mystery animal; but at last I found a decent copy and spent too much on it.
It was worth it, though. This book is a classic for a reason. The author presents the material in a thorough and engaging way. And he is skeptical at the right moments.
I have no regrets about buying this rare book. If you're into cryptozoology, yet also have a brain (a rare combo), this is a book that needs to be in your collection.
CLASSIC, EXHAUSTIVE, ENGROSSING.......2006-05-08
When it comes to Cryptozoology, there still is no better source than Dr. Bernard Heuvelmans, the man who penned the phrase, literally. I never considered the existence of the Yeti as anything more than a mythological cartoon character, until my discovery of this book in my High School library, some 36 years ago. And there still is no other work that approaches anywhere near it, for pure captivating reading, over-and-over again. I'd recommend this book to anyone, even the staunchest skeptics. From the Yeti to Orang Pendeks, Marsupial Tigers to Nandi Bears, the volumes of research will astound. Better than reading any novel about Lost Worlds and experiments with DNA. These represent real worlds, and possibly tens-of-thousands of creatures just waiting for serious scientific attention. Will make a believer of many for certain. One drawback though, no mention of Bigfoot, or any other American cryptids for that matter. Not even in the more recent revisions. But still worthy of the highest rating.

Heuvelmans has written an absorbing work that falls just short of masterpiece stature. The scope of the coverage is breathtaking, revealing the author's encyclopedic command of the field and unmistakably belying his tremendous enthusiasm for the material. From the outset, I would argue that the opus is more "archaeozoological" than "cryptozoological," as the author tends to devote nearly all of his attention to the details and history of collection of evidence for this cryptid or that, and upon the associated sociological phenomena (e.g., folktales, taboos, sculptures), than he does to ecological analysis of the theorized creatures' ontogenies within their respective biomes. The work reads almost like a compendium of forensic dossiers: for each cryptid he treats, Heuvelmans carefully narrates the historical accretion of man's evidentiary knowledge base-even to the details of each relevant archaeological expedition, whether splendidly fructiferous or gut-wrenchingly frustrating. Of particular note, Heuvelmans turns unsuccessful hunts into positive experiences, arguing how even failure to find this or achieve that adds monotonically to scientists' knowledge bases. Other aspects that are equally indicative of the author's love for his material include the proliferation of hand-drawn illustrations: while clearly no artist, he has striven to provide visual aids-even as minor as a small piece of skin or a vague scrimshaw on narwhal tusk-wherever they might prove edifying.
On the critical side, I may level two accusations that do not go very far toward pejorating the work. Firstly, taken from a continent-by-continent perspective, the coverage is not balanced. Although cryptozoological mysteries-and the oral and/or literary traditions that are often associated therewith-besprinkle the entire globe, the author devotes precious little attention to the boreal zones and none whatsoever to North America! Secondly-and, indeed, this is intertwined with the sparsity of North American coverage-Heuvelmans says next to nothing about sasquatch or some of his cryptohominid cousins, e.g., the central Asian almas and the Australian yay-ho and lo-an (although he most thoroughly dissects the evidence for and against the yeti). But, just perhaps, this second omission can be blamed upon prevailing undertones in the academic community: specifically, it was not until the 1958 incidents in logging camps in rural northern California that the "bigfoot" phenomenon began to attract serious attention.
Worth the money--even for children.......2005-12-31
My 5th grade son asked for a book about cryptozoology for Christmas, so I recently bought this book after being pointed to it by various reviewers (of other books) on Amazon. It seemed bizarrly expensive--and I felt obnoxiously indulgent buying it--but I can now report it is worth every penny. My son has been glued to the book for a week now and is on his way to memorizing the whole thing. The reading level is adult but a smart kid, fasinated with the subject, will rise to the challenge and chew through all 4 inches in no time.

For those of you who do not know Mr. Brenard Heuvelmans (1916-2001) was one of the true pioneers in Cryptozoology (study of hidden animals) "On the Track of Unknown Animals" is certainly a must for those who find this topic interesting.
In 2003 Jerry D. Coleman released his book continuing on the work of Heuvelmans in "Strange Highways", also found here at Amazon.com. It was "Strange Highways" open, logical, fresh story's that peeked my interest in this subject.
You couldn't go wrong reading them both.

A must-have tracking classic.......2004-03-10
When I was a kid running a trapline in northern Michigan, this was the book I carried in my rucksack. Today, more than 35 years later, I've written 2 books of my own on the subject of tracking wildlife, but this book is still on my bookshelf. Olas Murie was a true American pioneer who led the way into an area where no one else had gone before him. He established the first standards, and while modern genetic and other scientific techniques have increased our knowledge of wildlife manifold over what was known in Murie's day, it was he who laid the foundation on which the rest of us build. This book is a must-have for every tracker's library.
Good and comprehensive guide, a little difficult.......2002-01-15
It is a good and comprehensive guide, it has a lot of animal tracks, I found it a good and complete guide, but honestly sometimes I had a lot of difficult tryng to find some kind of tracks that I found.
In my personal opinion I think that this is a very good book for experts on the field but not so good for beginners in animal tracks. And by the way it doesnt have any color illustration, and altough they are not needed I was very familiar with peterson guides and this one is a little different.
A very useful guide.......2001-10-26
My wife and I have found this guide to be very useful in interpreting the sign left behind by the creatures resident in our northeastern woods, not only tracks but scat as well (with hundreds of detailed drawings of scat it is as much a guide to those leavings as tracks). The extensive behavioral descriptions are equally useful. I am not clear on the basis for the criticisms contained in the other review concerning animal harassment. Dr. Murie was a dedicated conservationist and President of The Wilderness Society after his retirement from the Fish and Wildlife Service and his respect for the creatures he is describing is evident on every page. While he acknowledges that some tracks were obtained from live-trapped animals, it is clear from the book that the overwhelming mass of the data is from direct field observation from a life spent in the outdoors.

Over the years, my children never seem to get tired of this book (and Mom doesn't get tired of reading it either). They love guessing and knowing the correct answer of the animal on the next page. As a Children's Specialist in a public library, I use this book constantly in storyhour. It has become such a favorite that I have had at least 10 moms ask me where they could buy it. The library copy stays checked out and it is most unfortunate that it is no longer available. It is simple, colorful and has great potential for "join-in" fun.

It's The Little Things You May Like.......2007-06-13
I have never been a big fan of too many statistics in a book and found the player comments to be the most interesting part of this book - the decades categories listing such items as the best defensive players and the best outfield throwing arms were nice touches. I think the best part of this book was the additional info on the players' lives after their careers, when such info was included - I do think that far too many pre-1900 players were in his position rankings and i wish he had ventured a guess on more of the Negro Leaguers as to how they ranked within the positions.

This book could be subtitled `Random Thoughts about the 100 Greatest Players at Every Position by Bill James'. This tome contains a wealth of information for anyone interested in the historical and statistical aspects of baseball. It is really three books in one. In the first section, titled `The Game', James takes a historical tour through each decade of baseball, discussing the players, the era, some of the important (or infamous) events. The second, and most important, section is entitled `The Players'. James gives his ratings for each of the 100 best players at each position with some comments after each entry. This is the real meat of the book. It isn't the kind of thing that you are likely to read straight through. You'll pick up this book and read a few pages now and then, or just thumb through various sections. The final section, `Reference' discusses James WinShares system in action by comparisons of various historical teams, some great, some terrible, and some mediocre.
Quite simply, I don't know how anyone can give this book less than five stars. It doesn't matter if you agree with James on the rating of every player, or whether Mantle was better than Mays. You'll realize that there is/was a lot more to baseball than you ever knew! One thing I found most interesting about this book was James' discussions of players I thought were great when I was a boy. It is interesting to see how my boyhood notions compare with James' statistical arguments. It is also interesting to see many players that I perceived as average/decent in the top 100 at their position. A second thing that I found fascinating about this book was James' discussion of the importance of offense versus defense. This topic comes up often at certain positions such as CF, RF, SS, and 2B. How does Roberto Clemente's great throwing arm, for example, offset someone else's better home run numbers? Who was really the `better' player?
One final note, James uses his WinShares system and other statistical arguments throughout this book, but they are generally not described in detail. If you want to learn about WinShares per se, this isn't the book.
In addition, this book was published in 2000/2001, so there are clearly many current players (Manny Ramirez, Derek Jeter, etc.) who would be in an updated version.
Bottom line - I bought this book a year ago and look at it, at least a little, virtually every day, and I'm sure I'll be looking at it 20 years from now. At less than 18 dollars, this is a steal. If you are interested in baseball, you are wasting time hestitating, buy the book.

This was a great guide for visiting Bermuda. The hotel section was accurate and current enough to plan most of the logistics before I arrived. The guide also had a lot of current suggestions of quaint places to visit that only a long timer would know. Well worth the small investment in improving your trip.
Travel tip - Although the cover of the guide shows sun and beaches, be careful about the timing of when you go. Bermuda is in the Atlantic, not the Carribean, so the water won't be so pleasant in the winter.

Went to Bermuda to celebrate 10th anniversary and purchased this book to guide us to the best dining and sights. It was right-on with all recommendations. We got a great taste of Bermuda out of a 4-night trip thanks to this book. On our last day there, in the airport we talked to another couple who had just spent 4 nights there as well. They had no idea about Ginger Beer, Dark and Stormy drinks, Fish Chowder, or Wahoo - Frommer's made sure we did not miss the essential elements of Bermuda. Highly recommended. We'll be using it for our next trip there.

I have often wasted money by buying several travel guides for my trips abroad. This time, I wanted to buy only one for my four night trip to Bermuda. This Frommers guide turned out to be an excellent choice. It provides all the needed information about getting from the airport to your hotel/resort, getting around the island, places to stay, beaches, golf courses, the sights, restaurants, bars, shopping and everything else you could need to know for your vacation. It also has a very useful detachable map of the whole Island, including detailed maps of St. George and Hamilton. This book should truly be all that you need for your trip to Bermuda.

I have read several books on Bermuda in preparing for our upcoming trip, and this one is by far the most helpful--and most thorough. It has a good combination of background info/history and travel info/tips. The detachable, fold-out map if the islands is particularly nice. I wish I'd bought this travel guide first (I've purchased several)--it would have saved me a good bit of time and money, since now I don't feel like I need to buy another!

In the small town of Heart Colorado there is new boy at Heart High, and rumors are flying fast and furious. Dillon is said to be a trouble-maker at the very least and at worst a criminal who has already done time according to those in the `know'. Carrie, the high school yearbook editor, has more important things to worry about. Her deadlines are looming large on the horizon and critical artwork promised her has been found in a departed students locker ruined by a can of soda! Dillon has offered to help, but Becky, her best friend, is telling her that she shouldn't rely on the 'criminal' for anything. Carrie doesn't know whether the rumors surrounding Dillon are true or not, but if she can meet her deadlines she's willing to take a chance on him. Dillon isn't making it easy however, he has the 'bad-boy' routine down pat. As Carrie looks into his dual-colored eyes her intuition tells her that it just might be an act, or is it her heart trying to confuse her? Just to make Carrie's life more hectic, she's worried about her long-time friend Tina, and some really bizarre stuff is happening at school. Tina has been gone from school for weeks and won't talk to her. There are the missing advertising files and if Dillon would open up she might get some answers but trust is an issue and he's been taught that trusting anyone is not a good idea. Can Carrie help her friend Tina, will Dillon open up, will the yearbook get done in time. These are the questions that you need to read Tangled Hearts to find out.
Tangled Hearts is a fast moving, well-written story that brought back my memories of high school in a vivid rush. The clicks, the problems involved in being accepted and/or being true to yourself. Not only does Ms. Story tell a story of the difficulties a new kid in school has to face, she tells a compelling story about the foster-care system. The reality of that difficult time in our lives was told in such a manner to appeal to a wide age range. Teenagers will be impressed that Ms Story has done a wonderful job of relating the day to day struggle to find a balancing act between old friendships and new. As an adult, I was impressed with the difficult issues she touched on: from getting in touch with the real you, to the possibilities of date rape, the drug problems rampant in our schools, as well as the degrading situation of a battered young girl. This is the first of Ms. Story's books that I have read, I would suggest on the basis of this book that parents read her books to remember the difficulties of high school life and then hand them to their teenagers to read. They will not only enjoy them, but will hopefully learn from them as well.

While reading these poems, I felt the pain and sorrow in each word. Very graphic!almost painful to read the poetry. It is a book one wants to read in a well balance emotional mood. Passionate, and very painful words! describes love in between that thin line of hate.
