Gorgeous Photos & Informative Text.......2004-04-12
Combining exceptionally beautiful photographs with well-written essays on natural history, this book is one of the best introductions to this amazing island.
Of particular interest is "Chapter Eleven: The End of Isolation" which considers chances of survival of New Guinea's unique biodiversity, taking into account the very different political and economical conditions that prevail in West Papua and Papua New Guinea.

Book Description
"Listen to those millions of women runners. Listen to their quiet breaths as they talk in predawn pairs, before the rest of the family wakes-- the lessons and questions they share to the rhythm of steady footsteps. 'I never thought I could...' 'I feel so much stronger...' 'I'm ready to take on a new challenge...'
Women develop a special sorority on the roads. This bond is an understanding based on acceptance, an appreciation of how far they have come, a knowing wink that says how much is yet to be gained. And so they talk and share and grow-- and run. Singly and in groups, swiftly and slowly, they run."
--Dagny Scott

Lots of information.......2006-11-06
I've just completed an 8 week beginning running program. I bought this book to read just before I embarked on the program. The book was an easy read; it has information that every beginning runner should know. I'll be keeping this book to refer to for years to come.
Here's what I found good about the book:-
1. Nuggets of information that I as a beginning runner won't have known to look for
2. Relevant to women and sometimes both sexes
3. Stories of real life women and how they got hooked on and what has kept them going - I found those inspirational
Here's what I didn't like about the book (therefore I'm giving it 4 stars):-
1. I understand that taking up running is good for you and all, helping you to maintain weight, good for your heart etc. but really, I feel that the authors sometimes go overboard with the accolades. As a beginning runner, I dont want to feel intimidated but at the same time, I dont want to feel as if I'm joining a cult.
All in all, I like the book and I'm keeping it but strangely enough, I feel uncomfortable reading about "us runners". I like to run but I also don't want to be part of an "elite group"
Great book! I would buy it through Amazon again........2006-03-10
I had a wonderful experience buying this fabulous book from Amazon. It arrived as promised and is definately the best book geared towards women for running. I have looked at a couple other books like this and they didn't even compare!
There is a runner in all of us, even YOU!.......2004-03-19
Although I had been working out for years, my stamina for running was just not there. I researched several running books, and this was by far the best. If you are a beginner, and need the basics, get this book. Age should not be a factor, but as advised-have a physical before you embark on running. I am physically fit, I had never ran, and I did not start until I was 41. There are women who write that they did not even begin until they were in their 60's! The program instructs on how to incorporate running into your workout, starting with as little as 2 minutes! You can do that right? It covers how to choose the right running shoe, how to avoid injury, and what you need to eat in order to maintain stamina for the long haul. Carb's are important here, take note. Dagny covers it all, and speaks from experience. She even covers overcoming the initial "embarassement" of running for the first time, and how to enter your first 5K and finish. I love this book, and still refer to it.
Disappointed.......2003-10-31
Personally, I was quite disappointed in the content of this book. I was getting back into running after a several year hiatus and bought this book to inspire me to a new level of fitness. I found the information to be geared towards the beginner and quickly "outgrew" it.
What a great motivator!.......2002-12-10
While training for my third marathon, I picked up this book to find some new training ideas. I couldn't put it down! It covers all facets of women's running - beginning to long distance, pregnancy, nutrition, balancing family and/or job with running and motivating factors. I used the charts, stretches and training ideas. I've recommended it to countless friends and often discussed ideas from the book while on long runs with training partners. Not only did I get some practical training advice, but I got a new resource for my running.

Very good indeed.......2004-04-22
This is a very competent work and a very useful tool for the potential buyer of property in Portugal. I like the way it is structured making it easy to find what you are looking for. It is difficult to think of something you want to know and is not there. There is an excellent section on "Settling In". The "Language" and the "References" sections are quite detailed with pratical guidance and extra sources of information. It is an excellent buy.
Book Description
A growing number of people are interested in buying property in Morocco with its ancient towns, coastal resorts and snowy peaks. This North African kingdom boasts 1,400 miles of coastline, year-round sunshine and an open invitation to foreign investment and has seen a sharp increase in the numbers of house-buyers from abroad over the last four years.
Buying a House in Morocco is aimed at anyone seriously considering purchasing a property in Morocco to live in permanently, rent out, or transform to a guesthouse. Extensively researched and informatively written, it will give readers a rich insight into what to expect and how to go about fulfilling their dream for a new home.
Morocco offers an enormous range of housing, from the traditional dars and riads of the medina to the villas, new developments and old Moroccan style farmhouses of the countryside. The regional guide also covers the different types of properties to be found in each region, such as:
>Swiss-style chalets in Ilfrane
>The riads (grand courtyard homes) in Marrakesh
>Elaborate Andalusian villas in Tangier
>Kasbahs in the Draa Valley
In line with the Moroccan government's aim to quadruple tourism to ten million visitors a year by 2010 the appeal to potential home buyers will keep increasing. Approximately $5 billion is being invested in six luxurious coastal resorts including golf courses and luxury villas and on improving the country's infrastructure and accessibility. This spells good news for the letting market, for guesthouse owners and for those who are purchasing homes as an investment.

One of the best, but..........2005-08-27
I am looking to invest in property in Portugal and this book is proving to be really useful. It provides excellent guidance on all sorts of aspects from choosing a location for your Portuguese home to working and setting up a business.
It gives good guidance on the legal and financial aspects of the purchase, including mortgage, which can be somewhat difficult in a foreign country. Also additional information on tax and other important legal considerations. It goes much further, with sections on renovating, letting and selling, a bit too early for me but good to be able to read about it.
I would say there is only one weak point in this book, the advice on learning the language. I speak Portuguese and my recommendations would be quite different. This said, the book directs readers to specialist booksellers where they can see for themselves and choose the best suited course to their needs.

Quite good!.......2006-03-20
I am looking into buying a place in the Algarve and this book has been a great help. It guides you through the buying process in Portugal, giving you the specialised language you need at each stage, legal and also practical to do with building etc. It takes you through the search for property, the purchase, etc. It has a lot of diagrams with the words for woodwork, plumbing, heating, decorating, garden, etc. The diagrams show the Portuguse words for details like joist, drain cock, current tester, circuit breaker, different types of locks and bolts. There are also lists of vocabulary by topic. This book has been a great help to me. I just wish the vocabulary lists were at the end of the book instead. Some words are difficult to find as it is. You dont always know what section to look up for them. This can be frustrating.
Also dont expect the book to teach you the language. It is not for that. It gives you the vocabulary to go with buying property in all its various aspects, but that is it. For the language I have Manuela Cook's Portuguese course, which is excellent and gives you also vocabulary and phrases for things you need when you have got your home in the country, like talking to your cleaner and the like. Also socialising, getting a job, etc.

Customer Reviews:
Quite good to get you started.......2004-03-03
This was my first guide before I bought a little place in the Algarve. It gave me the essentials and got me started. Then of course you will need a local solicitor, and some are quite fluent in English. This book does not do every thing for you but is very useful.
It's better than nothing . . ........2000-05-25
My wife is a Portuguese citizen and although we are currently living in the USA we've made plans to purchase a second home in her native country. This book is good for a basic introduction to the idea of purchasing a home in Portugal, but it really only skims the surface. The main chapters in the book are well laid out, but the narrative seems to lack a continuous flow at times and doesn't do a good job of summarizing key points or explaining the fine details. What the book does best is at least make the reader aware of the many considerations and complex issues (different taxes, different possible ways to arrange for a mortage, etc.) that need to be examined before making a purchase. However, the book doesn't provide enough information on any of these issues for the reader to make any judgements about his own situation. I guess I was hoping the book would be more along the lines of the humbly-entitled but very helpful "Idiots Guide" or "Dummies" series. This book is definitely not along the sames lines as those books. Good news if you're proud of the fact that you're not an idiot, but when it comes to buying a home in Portugal I'll be the first to admit that I AM and idiot, and would like to have things explained to me thus! I also think that my admittedly "American" expectation was that the book would be comparing purchasing a home in Portugal with purchasing a home in the USA. In all fairness to the author, that's not what was stated. The book doesn't directly compare purchasing a home in Portugal to purchasing a home anywhere else, which makes the task of explaining the business of buying a home in Portugal very difficult indeed - the author doesn't share a common frame of reference with the reader. (Though one can definitely tell that the author is from the United Kingdom). Because of the dearth of information available, I am still glad I bought it and can recommend that anyone thinking of making this move read this book. However, I'll still be relying on my wife's in-depth knowledge of Portugal when we do purchase our home there. Best of luck to you!
Customer Reviews:
Outdated Book.......2003-02-07
This book is very outdated. The housing market had drastically changed in Spain since this book was written. Even the amounts in the book are in pesetas and not in Euros.
I can not agree with the description of the Spaniards in the book, either. I have traveled to Spain many times and I think people and the whole country is much different than it is described in the book. There is too much negativity in this book. This book is written mainly for Brits. Once you finish the book you may want to say Long Live the Queen!
A little to Brit-centric.......2002-03-25
It was a very helpful book, but I found it a bit too Anglophilic.
As an American the book is lacking.
Essential for anyone planning to move to Spain........2001-05-10
Buying a Home in Spain by David Hampshire not only gives a variety of factual information about Spain, it reads like a novel. The book is up to date and discusses all aspects of day to day life in Spain. No matter if you are interested in the legal system, business, social life or want to know about the different areas, this book has it all. I appreciate the book most because it is written in a way that it will inform you no matter where you currently live. If you want to read just one book about living in Spain; this one excellent.
