1 out of 5 stars The Power of Early Speed (Elements of Handicapping) .......2007-09-30

I can only half-finished but will not continue the book. If the people believe or love statistic records, the book is for them. Half of the book is stats records for USA dirt track ( unfortunately I am living in Australia ). I cannot enjoy the book.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting presentation.......2006-08-24

The title says it all in that early speed is the ultimate bias. It's like in the movie Top Gun where Tom Cruise says "I feel the need, the need for speed." The stats of the sucess of early speed don't lie, & this book presents an interesting way of compiling them with an emphasis that includes field size. And a large part of the book presents charts on trainers, jockeys, etc. But concentrating on the 1st call only without the all important 2nd call & no use of fractions means that this work as providing raw numbers is only a starting point for further research. The books of Ainslie, Beyer, Davidowitz & Brohammer should be studied first, as while this effort presents a formula for early speed points, the best system is that one that compiles information & experiances using the most complex computer, the one above the shoulders.

    4 out of 5 stars Speed Kills.......2006-08-21

I liked the book mostly for the Klein speed figures, I have applied them with some success. I was disappointed though when I figured out that it was pretty uneccessary to figure them myself, TVG for example has speed figures that almost exactly mirror what I came up with using the formula from the book. But it did give me a new respect for early speed that I will continue to use in my handicapping.

3 out of 5 stars Early speed is important. However, what is the meaning of the formulas in this book?.......2006-07-22

I agree that early speed is important in horse racing and in particular horse racing on dirt. Klein Speed Points and Klein Track Bias Numbers as mentioned in this book give the horse racing fans some kinds of objective measurement and idea on how the speed of a race will look like and the likelihood that a horse will perform better because of the favourable change in the pace of a race as well as track bias. However, the author of this book does not explain how the formulas used to derive Klein Speed Points and Klein Trace Bias Numbers are created.

Once again, I would like to stress that just knowing early speed is not enough. This is only one part of horse racing. Moreover, if everyone focuses on early speed evaluation, the inefficieny in the "horse racing market" will disappear and the profit will also disappear.

This book is OK to read, but as an experienced horse racing fans who have read many books on handicapping I found no surprise in this book.

4 out of 5 stars A fabulous piece of research.......2006-04-12

Handicappers and writers have long talked about the importance of early speed, but now Klein brings a massive research project to the table to show exactly how powerful this factor is. Most handicapping books bring select examples or limited samples of a few hundred races results to the table, but Klein calls on the Daily Racing Form database to inclued over 1.6 million starters. He then details by track, condition, and class to provide more insight into return on investment for each. The idea isn't revolutionary, but the data that backs up his ideas leave no doubt as to the "Power of Early Speed." Klein's speed points appear on the surface to be better than Quirin's technique that he developed 20+ years ago.

I wish Klein had given his point technique somewhat of a test run and provided results of his test. It's easy to look back and talk about return on investment for early leads after the race is run, but I would like some proof of how effective the Klein points are at identifying leaders because that is what will produce results.

      5 out of 5 stars love it!!!!.......2007-10-11

I like her no nonsense help. I haven't even followed all her instructions yet because I'm a real hard case but even with just the begining steps my husband and family are noticeing a difference in my home already. I'm so glad I bought this book I can't wait to get her other books as well.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but a little too compulsive........2007-10-04

I bought this for my daughter, to help her with her house, life, and anything else. I didn't want her to be insulted, so I read it and told her I bought it for me but thought she might like it too. It started out great, great ideas, funny, fun. But it got a little too over the edge....compulsive...neat freakish towards the end. I told my daughter to try to incorporate SOME of the Flylady's tips into her routine. She hasn't read it yet, but I'm hoping she learns something from it, because she is a very disorganized person. It seemed there were some discrepancies in the book about her life, which makes you feel she's making all of this up to make money, not to share her experience. Hopefully my daughter doesn't catch on to some of it.

This all-ages graphic novel is the perfect gift for a friend or for yourself! Runton uses endearing and entertaining pictures to tell his story without any words, and the adorable characters will pull on the most cynical of heart-strings.

Flying Lessons is the third adventure of Owly and Wormy, but you will have no trouble jumping into the story if it is the first time you've picked up an Owly book. Once again, Owly sets out to make a new friend in the forest, and along the way he learns about overcoming stereotypes and childhood fears.

Runton is unparalleled in his ability to capture the heart and imagination of his readers. Flying Lessons was just as enjoyable as the previous two Owly books, and I can't wait for the next Owly story to come out!

This would make an excellent coffee table book for the waiting room or office of a consultant, or teacher, or artist, or anyone who likes to think about thinking.

The author, who is a design consultant by trade, has designed an intriguing story about thinking outside the box. The ending could easily be condemned as a cheap shot, but then again, why hadn't anyone else thought to simply ####### their paper to make their "plane" fly further. Therein lies the beauty of any solution that clearly falls outside the box -- easy to see in retrospect, challenging to forward project.

This quick read is capped with some simple rules for helping one to achieve that creative state so highly prized.

A creative variety of graphics illustrate this story whose mystery will intrigue ages 8-80.

      FLYING LESSONS by Peggy Webb
      July 12, 2006

      Rating ****

Beth is not happy in her marriage to boring, predictable husband Howard Martin. There was a time when she loved his quirks, and his need to be routine. But now she is frustrated and is not sure what she wants out of life. All he does is irritate her.

The story opens with Beth and her best friend Jane, an older woman who Beth looks up to for friendship as well as for advice and strength. Jane supports Beth the way Beth needs it, unlike Howard who hasn't a clue as to what is on Beth's mind. Opposites attract, as they say, and Beth is the opposite of Howard - she's creative and hates routine, is unpredictable and is a free spirit. She now has a need to spread her wings. However, she has devoted her adult life to her husband and her two children, and she feels she's missed something all these years because she gave up some of her passions. There's that symphony she's been trying to write for the past twenty years. Yes, she blames her lack of creativity on her boring marriage.

She also has a problem with how Howard deals with their younger daughter Jenny, who is also ready to spread her own wings. While older daughter Kate takes after daddy, Jenny is more like Beth, a free spirit who baffles Howard to no end. He is doing his best to bring her back down to solid ground, but Beth knows that if Howard forces his ways on their youngest, they may lose her for good.

FLYING LESSONS is about a woman who has a need to spread her wings and fly, to try things that she felt she couldn't do before, because she felt duty-bound in her married life. It's a classic case in which a middle-aged woman, finding that her children are out of the house, realizes that life has passed her by. Beth runs away and goes off to a quiet beach resort town where she makes new friends and even meets a man that she is attracted to. She also works on that symphony, and she learns a thing or two about herself.

Older women may connect with Beth, because Beth's life is not uncommon. She's done the right thing, given up her own needs for her family, and now that she sees Howard for who he really is, all she feels toward him is annoyance and irritation. Readers will root for Beth as she tries to discover who she really is, as she goes off on her own to reflect about her life and where she wants to go next. When she connects with an older couple she meets at the beach, it gives her time to contemplate what she thinks a perfect marriage should be, and she envies them as she sees them walk hand in hand every day as she tries to compose her twenty year old symphony. The reader will be touched as she sheds a tear or two, feeling sorry for herself. And while she isn't sure she wants to be with Howard again, the reader will know that deep down, she still loves him despite everything.

This reviewer loved FLYING LESSONS, for its realistic characters and story line that many will be able to relate to. These are every day people living every day lives, and while the story may be on some level predictable, at the same time the reader will appreciate seeing this story put on paper, as it may be their own lives they are reading about. FLYING LESSONS is highly recommended. - Courtesy of Love Romances.

Webb has succeeded in writing another powerful novel that keeps you revetted to the story from page 1 to the end! As an avid reader of Webb's spectacular novels, I know that you will be spellbound with this latest one.
If you have ever uttered the words, "I would like to run away," don't miss this adventure with Beth Martin as she searches for excitement and change. You can flow through the gamut of emotions that one experiences when trying the unknown.
"Flying Lessons" is a great addition for your personal book collection. If you enjoyed reading "Driving Me Crazy," you will be equally delighted with this latest Webb masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars sensational character study .......2006-05-07

Fifty-three years old Beth Holt Martin think her life stinks as she is bored of being the dull spouse of nice psychiatrist Dr. Howard Martin. She knows there has to be more to life and that her feelings of discontentment have nothing to do with the empty nest that she now rules over. However, what makes everything hit home is a d?j? vu observation of her oldest daughter reliving her life

Beth decides to find the missing woman she once was by seeking out the dreams she had in her youth. She leaves Howard behind on a quest to seek her lost soul for she plans to spread her wings and fly solo though at the end of the rainbow she may come back to Howard; assuming he waits for her.

The key that makes FLYING LESSONS a sensational character study is not the heroine seeking her wings, but the support cast; Howard and the kids are nice people so that Beth's dissatisfaction with life cannot be blamed on negativity by them. Instead the people in her life depend on her as they know she is a loving person. Thus when the fiftyish Beth wonders what happened to her dreams and begins an allegorical quest to find them, the audience obtains a well written deep drama of people doing the best they could while making solid choices that seem right then but years later haunt them with what if. Peggy Webb writes a wonderful tale that the contemporary crowd will devour.

I found this book to be inspiring for anyone suffering from Parkinsons. Joan Grady-Fitchett the author has done an excellent job of relating to the reader the gamut of emotions involved in the diagnosis of Parkinsons. Her strong mental attitude and determination should inspire others to do the same. The book also gives important information on doctors to contact and the success and failure of her medications and treatments.

Fighting the challanges of Parkinson's Disease, sometimes winning, sometimes losing; along with general living experiences made this book an informative and enjoyable read for me. However, it ended too soon. Did she have the surgery and what were the results?

5 out of 5 stars You'll cry & laugh--a Horse Whisperer tragedy, in her body........1998-08-24

An amazing woman fights the little and big things that are no longer familiar. This disease, this invader, is slowing crashing her body. All she has left is spirit and persistence, but these are powerful. Joan's writing is tight and moving. It takes you along with her from the top of success in professional modeling. From anger. Through realization and fear. Through lovers and pain, and to rest of her life. The reader will come away a little smarter, a lot braver, and a little less a victim in their own life.

5 out of 5 stars Book of Life.......2006-07-11

This is such a lovely book! Very helpful, very comforting, whether or not one is having psychological "issues." It's also a surprising book. Dr Snyder's approach to emotional life, especially anxiety and depression, is a revelation, very different from the take-this-pill-and-call-me-in-the-morning prescriptions for happiness that one hears on the TV talk shows these days. Give this book to someone you love (starting with yourself)!

5 out of 5 stars If your engines quits at 10,000 feet, how do you feel?.......2006-03-09

I really like this book alot. The author sets the tone of each chapter with a dramatic real life adventure he has experienced as a small plane pilot. He then weaves in some existential psychology pearls that apply and then goes on to describe a case involving an individual or couple who is struggling with an issue that relates. A tall task but it all works. It's a fun and exciting read as well as one that touches on the profound. Listening to ourselves and how we relate to our intimate partners is the real gut of this book. But in the process you get to sit next to John in his plane with a rescued seal in the cockpit.

No, it not a manual that will teach you how to fly, although John Snyder is a pilot who gets away every chance he can. As a psychologist and therapist, John shares many vignettes throughout the book from his work with clients. Using his aviation experiences, John vividly describes moments of sheer panic and terror as he walks us through everything that his body and mind experience. Reading each chapter was exciting and felt like a rollercoaster ride. These flying stories were woven into stories about trust and intimacy and the lack of confidence and anxiety we all can feel when relating intimately. But we are in the hands of a master who is very knowledgeable and nurturing and gently guides us through to the safety on the other side. A must read for anyone who is not yet living their life to the fullest. I loved this book!

5 out of 5 stars An Exciting Flight.......2006-02-28

Flying Lessons is a treasure of a book written by a seasoned psychologist who is also a licensed pilot. In a beautiful blending of adventure, metaphor and practical lesson, John Snyder uses his experiences in learning to fly to illustrate how the same principles apply in learning to live an exciting and intimate life with oneself and one's partner. Grounding his writing in existential philosophy, Snyder shows that much of what we frequently fear in life is a natural part of human existence and needs to be experienced, not avoided. Embracing anxiety, expressing feelings, and becoming vulnerable with our partners are not necessarily brand new principles, but Snyder's style of presenting them is unique, engaging and informative. Nearly every page offers a nugget of wisdom that readers can extract and carry with them beyond their reading. "From an existential point of view all security seeking is dying to keep from dying."

Flying Lessons would be a valuable addition to the library of anyone who wants to learn to live a more fulfilling life, and it is a must-have for couples wanting more intimacy in their relationships. Additionally, it would be an especially helpful handbook for professionals working with individuals and couples. Personally, I have found it to be the kind of book that warrants repeated reading to remind me of the important lessons Snyder teaches, lessons I frequently tend to "forget" given my penchant toward anxiety avoidance.
