Book Description
"We live with a myth about New England," write naturalists Nona Bell Estrin and Charles W. Johnson: "that we have four distinct seasons here." As careful and experienced observers of the natural world, Estrin and Johnson know that nature's progressions are gradual, continuous, and interconnected. And as they demonstrate in their remarkable book, the close examination of nature--even unassuming landscapes close at hand--yields rich rewards on a daily basis. In Season combines the immediacy of direct field observations with broader perspectives on natural cycles.
An accomplished field artist as well as a naturalist, Nona Estrin selects extracts from her rich journals to trace the sequences of natural events over the course of a year. From Toothaker Island, Maine to Kettle Pond, Vermont to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, her precise, lively observations, along with her lovely drawings and watercolors, reveal the lives of warblers and butterflies, deer and grouse, frogs and fiddlehead ferns. Occasionally, her records of the natural world are punctuated by charming asides about the difficulty of drawing bees or the rescue of a fledgling kingbird caught in a fishing line.
In alternating chapters, Charles Johnson's essays tell the "stories behind her scenes," exploring such seasonal cycles as mating, migration, and winter survival. His wide-ranging knowledge of the natural world clarifies the continuity of life and the interconnections among species. Rather than focus on categorization and identification, Johnson explores the dynamics which shape the natural world in New England, not only for plants and wildlife, but for people as well.
With its mix of detailed observation and overarching explanation, as well as the stunning color reproductions of Estrin's on-the-spot watercolors, In Season offers an appreciation of the natural world in New England that is rooted in the specific experience of its ceaseless alternations.

Get in sync with the rhythms of nature.......2000-06-02
Are you fascinated by the many wonders of nature? Did you know that there are a lot of amazing natural phenomena occuring right around you?
This book is a unique and excellent guide to the most spectacular natural phenomena occuring in your region. The information is neatly organized and detailed directions are included. I wish I had discovered this book earlier! Many of my favorite spots for nature-watching, which took me many years of exploring to discover, are readily listed in it.

Thoughtful and deliberate.......2003-09-09
I have an out-of-print copy of "A Walk Through The Year" I bought some years ago from a second-hand bookstore. Teale's essays on each day are similar in conception to Hal Borland's "The Twelve Moons Of the Year". Teale (who is now deceased) is a more philosophical writer than Borland, though. There are old mis-conceptions set right, a little science and sometimes a nature lecture. Walk with him and his wife Nellie and it's like getting a nice nature lecture along the way each time. A very pleasant read from a wise and patient naturalist.

Great Gift for young girls.......2007-09-27
This is a great gift for young girls. Not a game that is well known today but was popular when I was young. My neighbor's little girl has had a blast playing this and has shared it with her friends at school.
Gift for granddaughter.......2007-08-05
I bought the Chinese jump rope as a birthday gift for my 8 year old granddaughter. It was a suggestion from her Mom. She wanted to try it out right away. She followed the instructions that came with the jump rope and really got into trying the different ways to use it.
I was pleased with the purchase.
Good Old Stuff.......2007-07-11
I searched for months to figure out a gift for my neighbor's daughter. I wanted to get her something she could do that was not in front of a computer yet did not cost an "arm and a leg". This book is good. You get both the rules and the equipment. You need 3 players or 2 and a stable chair (or something like that). She REALLY likes it. I purchased a second one so that she was able to give it as a gift to her friend. Now; these two girls are teaching others in the neighborhood how to play this age old game.
I used to raid my Mom's 'sewing box' for 6 feet of elastic to play this game in the 60's. Very cool choice for girls in the 7 to 10 age range.
great gift.......2007-05-26
Great gift for my 9 year old. Had fun teaching her the games I used to play when I was her age.
endless fun.......2007-04-17
My daughter is obsessed with this jumprope. She really enjoyed learning new tricks described and illustrated in the book. Great toy. She plays with it every day.

Daughter loves this........2006-12-15
I bought this for my daughter as a gift. She loves it. She took it with her on a sleep over and everyone had so much fun with it. I remember learning this in grade school back in the 70's. I love watching my daughter learn about and do the things I did as a child.

Maybe Not as Fancy, But Fun, Fun, Fun!.......2002-07-03
Chinese Jump Rope is a fantastic guidebook for use by the middle reader child interested in this fun rope-skipping game. The illustrations are simple and easy for children to understand. Adults working with children will also enjoy the book and can easily introduce the game due to the excellent format of the book. Much more informative than other CJR books on the market!!
Too bad the book is out of print! Highly recommend!

The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child
ASIN: 0142302090 |
Book Description
Nailed into a crate in the back of a truck, fifteen-year-old María, her older sister, Julia, their little brother, Oscar, and a boy named Tomás endure a terrifying and torturous journey across the U.S. border and then north to Chicago. There they struggle to find work-cleaning, sewing, washing dishes-always fearful of arrest and deportation back to the cruelties of El Salvador. By turns heartbreaking and hopeful, this moving story of the secret lives of immigrants is not to be missed.
A gripping, lyrical portrayal of a continuing American dilemma." (Kirkus Reviews, pointer review)
Customer Reviews:
A Key to Understanding.......2007-05-14
I had to read this book for a class and I am so thankful that my professor introduced me to it. While reading this book, I found that I could not put it down. It is an easy read and is appropriate for 6th grade and higher. This book gives the reader an understanding of the hardships of migrating to a new country and how scary it was to be on the lookout for Immigration. Furthermore, this book offers an incite to how non-criminal illegal immigrants are - that they are people who are just trying to survive.
realistic & important story on the immigrant experience.......2006-03-18
Interesting story that doesn't glamorize or sugar coat the struggle of immigration. The decriptive language could have been richer and more challenging, but the reading level seems appropriate for upper middle school readers.
Illegal Travel.......2005-03-02
Maria and her family are trying to escape from El Salvador. The Gaurdias had killed her Papa. Now Maria, Oscar(her brother), and Julia (her pregnant sister)are all hiding in Chicago. Due to a raid on the place she worked, her best friend was sent back to El Salvador. Julia's baby was about due and she might have to go to the hospital, where most illegal Latino's are caught. To find out what happens to Julia you'll need to read the book. I enjoyed this book because it is a multicultural book based on an actual event in the past. I enjoyed it and I hope you read it, and like it as much as me.****
first encounter with a Latino-related book.......2001-12-11
My fifth grade teacher gave this to me as a gift. I read it several times, mainly because I thought that if a teacher had given it to me,then it must be good.
Needless to say, it wasn't exactly my cup of tea. I didn't really sympathize too much with the characters, and I found it unbelievable that a girl could see pictures that she had created with...magic markers. Anyway, I had no other exposure to anything remotely south of the border before, so it was a new experience.
The reason why I give this four stars is because it really wasn't as bad as I seem to be saying. Things happen to Maria that are easy to realte to--falling in love for the first time, trying to be an adult while still very young, and dodging sexual exploitation while working and living illegally in the States.
Maybe the reason why I was disappointed was that this could have been a more vividly described story. The story of the bird seemed more like a blatantly literary device which wasn't properly integrated.
Well, this is my two sense. Worth investigation, worth a read.
Stress and Self understanding.......1999-01-08
Full of romance and struggles to understand a new language and the people around her, this book has the greatest elements to draw you in as a reader to read this book again and again until it falls apart. The beginning was gripping, you kept wondering if they'd make it...the only bad thing about this book was that the "quizel" the bird in other words was a corny element and should have been left out. Other than that, this book was fantastic and should be read by all at one point of their lives when stressed and searching for self understanding.

Customer Reviews:
Simply Beautiful.......2007-10-05
I looked through this while waiting for an appoinment. I am so glad that they kept me waiting so that I could finish this book. The images of the planets of our solar system in this book are among the most stunning I have ever seen. Each image is accompanied by a brief description on the bottom that does not intrude into the photography. Satisfies both of my interests of astronomy and photography. Now I am waiting for my own copy!
Great for Education.......2007-05-14
I used this book to supplement the textbook when teaching an 8th grade unit on astronomy. I thought the kids would think looking at a picture book was totally lame, but they loved it. The pictures in this book are so detailed and incredibly large (which makes it great for the classroom). There are even pictures that show the surface of Venus through its thick atmosphere, close ups of Jupiter's roiling storms and a head-on shot of Saturn's rings that show you how thin they are. Coverage of the most striking moons is also given. The information is brief, but satisfying and readable for all levels.
Simply stunning.......2007-04-10
This book contains some of the most stunning images of the sun and the planets in our solar system. The quality of the paper and printing is excellent. Each of the planets is covered with a brief but informative page of current information (late 2006) accompanied by very high resolution images from the latest probes and satellites. If you have any interest in astronomy or science in general, this book will not disappoint. I picked it up at a local store on clearance for ten bucks and was amazed at the beauty of the book as I went through it. I'm planning on picking up one or two more copies to give as gifts. Being a long-time photographer and amatuer astronomer, I'm not easily impressed with most books of this type, but Sparrow did a great job assembling this information and these images.

Book Description
Revolving around her own quest to learn to fly fish on the Lower Laguna Madre of deep south Texas, Kathy Sparrow weaves ageless principles of women's psychology and yoga with a fresh, distinctly feminine approach to fly fishing. Kathy takes the reader from her early life on the bank with her father and grandfathers to her current status as a licensed Coast Guard captain, a fly fishing guide and lodge owner, and the holder of a women's world record speckled trout. Throughout she offers precious technical advice gleaned from male and female anglers alike. From the rods to use, the lines, and the flies, she covers a broad range of information including tips on how to see fish, read the water, and how to become a stealthy wader so you can stalk fish with finesse.
Customer Reviews:
Heartfelt eloquence and a really nice backcast.......2004-01-20
Not your typical "hook and bullet" writer, Kathy takes her reader deep into a search for her spiritual self. If you are looking for a more how-to, where-to approach to the wonderful waters of the Laguna Madre, you'll probably be happier with one of Phil Shook's excellent guidebooks. If, however, you would like to witness the growth of a fisherman, in terms of both technical prowess and spiritual awareness of the world around them, grab this little number and dive right in.
By the end of "the Spiritual Journey" you may find, as I did, that Kathy has vocalized much of what we feel when we wander in the wild places and talk to God.
Life's shimmering reflections off the Mother Lagoon.......2003-08-08
I just finished this book and it is going to take a couple of days before a can finally put my finger on a suitable response. The eloquence and grace that have blessed my days this past week have been penned by a masterful artist. Kathy's passion and her yearnings are vividly reflected off the shimmering surface of the Mother Lagoon. A blessing for all to read, fly fishermen or not, and a must for all women. "on the Mother Lagoon" captures the essence of the spirit involved in life itself and with it Kathy has solicited my tears, laughter and many smiles.
I marvel at Kathy's ability in the kitchen, on the water, at her computer and beside Scott all of which I've come to know.
A blended and highly recommended treatise.......2003-04-12
On The Mother Lagoon: Fly Fishing And The Spiritual Journey by Katy Sparrow combines her "one woman" adventure in learning how to fly fish on the Lower Laguna Madre of south Texas, with meditations on women's psychology and spirituality. With practical tips on how to choose the best rod, fly, and line, techniques for reading the water and wading stealthily, as well as thoughtful ponderings on embracing life and the joy of the catch, On The Mother Lagoon brings together a blended and highly recommended treatise on the love of fishing and the human desire to look beyond oneself.

Book Description
Denis Summers-Smith first took up the study of the House Sparrow in 1947, thinking that the difficulties of travel in post-war Britain would best suit the study of a species always close at hand. The humble House Sparrow, common everywhere, was surprisingly poorly researched and his work soon provided interesting insights into this successful and adaptable little bird. As new opportunities to travel opened up, his interest blossomed to take in the genus Passer as a whole. His travels would ultimately lead to his study of all but one group, found only in the deepest Turkestan, and to the publication of his authoritative monograph on sparrows in 1988.
While that book presented his knowledge of sparrow biology, this volume tells the other, human, side of the tale. His wry descriptions of the tribulations and unexpected pleasures of a traveller on four continents, from the Himalayas and Thailand, to Africa and the Americas (with a good few islands in between) are interspersed with observations and speculations on the biology of sparrows in a wide variety of habitats. Everywhere local officials and birdwatchers warmed to the eccentric Scot in pursuit of the little birds that nobody notices but which so often make their homes beside us.
The author's own photographs and delightful cartoons by Euan Dunn further paint the picture of this lifelong search.

Book Description
Margaret Laurence is best known for her fiction set in Canada. Less well known is the work that resulted from the years she spent in Africa. Northern Somaliland in particular stimulated the deep understanding of human nature that permeates Laurence's subsequent work. Fiona Sparrow's in-depth study examines the foundations of Laurence's African writing, as well as Laurence's personal experiences in West Africa.
