Book Description
Dereck and Beverly Joubert have lived among lions for most of their adult lives. Few people anywhere are on such intimate terms with these awe-inspiring creatures, and fewer still are the naturalists who can claim to have seen, let alone shared, their nocturnal forays. For unlike their East African cousins, the great cats of Savuti, a remarkable natural enclave just north of Botswana's Okavango Delta, do almost all of their stalking and killing at night when the moon is just a sliver in the sky.
Over a hundred breathtaking full-color images captured by Beverly Joubert's ever-watchful camera represent not just superb wildlife photography but a priceless record of a little-known natural phenomenon. They create a portrait of the Savuti lions at rest, at play, and on the shadowy hunts that end in a sudden, explosive kill, offering a rare glimpse of the lithe power and ruthless beauty that have mesmerized humans for millennia. Dereck Joubert's detailed and engaging text documents years of observation, providing invaluable insight into the biology, behavior, and social structure of an elusive species; at the same time he brings to life the individual animals the Jouberts came to know so well: Maome, the matriarch whose clan played together every evening; Ntchwaidumela, the bold and unflappable male who defied a charging elephant; Sequela, the old exile who returned to spend his last days with his pride, and many more.
Last but by no means least, Hunting With the Moon is a chronicle of human dedication, a deeply personal account of a couple who have devoted their lives to understanding and protecting the magnificent beasts who prowl these pages in all their majestic grace. It's an extraordinary book, filled with stunning images, fascinating facts, and vivid anecdotes -- a once-in-a-lifetime chance to enter the enthralling, unforgettable world of lions in the wild.

Politics and Photography.......2001-11-06
An excellent book with some marvellous photographs. After all those years in Savuti I would have thought that they perhaps would have had a greater understanding on the politics of lions and hunting? I spent twenty seven years there, I can remember an Africa with a lot more Cheethas, Leopards and other cats, in the days before "everyone wants to see a lion". Now the over population of Lions is having adverse effects on the other predatory cats. Well, Lions is their passion, so theyre understandably biased, but all in all - a great deal of effort and hard work has gone in to producing an otherwise very enjoyable book
A Book Every One Should Read........2001-02-18
This book is one of the best I have ever read.Extremely detailed and imformative, with excellent photography,I read it from cover to cover, every single word, without putting it down once! But then again, lions are my passion,so I suppose I'm slightly bias. For anyone even remotely interested in wildlife, this book is a must. No bookshelf is complete without it. Hunting With The Moon has some clear messages. How much longer can we tolerate the shooting of prime adult male lions for sport? For every male lion shot, effectively between 5 and 14 lions actually die.I personally think this is terrible, and I am glad people such as Dereck and Beverly Joubert make it their business to do something about it.
A wonderful supplement.......2001-02-12
No nature video collection is complete without at least two or three of the Joubert's works on the wildlife of Botswana, and this book complements their video work wonderfully.
The major focus of their work has been the elephants and lions of Botswana, but the book is a good overall view of the wildlife of the Savuti area. Fans of the videos will enjoy the memories they share, such as their agonizing but ultimately correct decision to let Tau the cub fend for himself and the day they gave Ntchwaidumela his name.
It is not always an easy read. Their subjects have not always fared well - in particular they painfully inform us that all but one of the adult male lions in their study group, including the five who starred in their two lion movies, have since been killed by hunters. Their annotated field notes, "The African Diaries", also in print, is largely about how this situation has forced them to take time away from behind the camera to be active in politics.
But this work is largely about happier days and the making of some classic videos. The still photographs within make this book worthy of becoming a classic itself.
Marvelous Book!.......2000-12-26
This book is a joy to browse through, to read and to admire the photographs. Every page shows the author's passion towards the lions of Savuti, a magical and wild place in Northern Botswana. Derek and Beverly Joubert spend years in that place filming and photographing lions and other denizens of this wilderness. The book is proliferated with exceptional photographs of lions interacting with other animals. We see lions hunting, resting, playing and communicating with each other. There is a series of unique photographs portraying lions killing an elephant calf. There is a great photograph of a running lioness during a hunt, an aerial photograph of a running buffalo herd. I can go on and on. You get the drift. The text is interesting and at times seems almost poetic. "Hunting with the Moon" is one of a few must-have books for a true lover of African wildlife. In other words, great book!
The magic of Savuti.......2000-02-20
Simply the most passionate book on wildlife, this one in a million work trully complements the Jouberts' films on the Savuti plains, and only makes you dream even more about that magical place. A must read for all wildlife lovers.

The most comprehensive guide to the art and science of goaltending
The past decade has seen a tremendous surge of interest in hockey. More colleges and universities have added programs. Hockey leagues are sprouting up in such unlikely places as Florida beach communities, New Mexico desert towns, and the Texas flatlands.
Coauthored by Jim Corsi, goaltending coach for the Buffalo Sabres, The Hockey Goalie's Handbook is the most comprehensive guide to mastering the most demanding hockey position: goalie. Drawing upon his extensive coaching experience at all levels--from peewees to pros--Corsi explores all facets of goaltending. From the psychology of being a goalie to choosing and purchasing the right equipment for an individual's style and needs, to drills for improving timing, coordination, reach, and speed, Corsi covers all the bases with invaluable advice and guidance as well as tips and techniques for aspiring goalies, parents, and hockey coaches.
Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners, wish there was more.......2007-03-01
This book is an amazing general overview of becoming a goaltender. the beginning of the books is more-or-less common sense for goaltenders that are already playing, but the middle of the books and the drills at the end serve as a great refresher course. If your a beginner, this book is great. If you want a refresher course in goaltending, you should also buy this. I believe that the only thing lacking in this book is a more in depth section on equipement. Not everyone understands what they are supposed to be looking for.
Best of the Bunch!.......2005-02-22
I used to play hockey when I was much younger and now that I am getting back into it, I wanted to get as many books and videos as possible to remember the old skills and to find out how much has changed since I used to play. Of all the books that I bought and read, this one was the best in my opinion. I felt that it went deeper into the "How's and Why's" of techniques than Hockey Goaltending by Brian Daccord, which is my second favourite book. The way that Jim Corsi presented the concept of the Goaltender's "toolbox" was excellent for getting the information to stick in my head.
Bravo, and thank you!
Endorsements.......2003-06-09
Several testimonials provided to the authors and publisher that are sure to be of interest.
Jim Corsi and John Hannon have written the most comprehensive goalie book I have ever seen. Jim has a great grasp of goaltender coaching and how the goaltending position has radically changed over the last decade. I, too, would encourage young goalies to study the game and learn as much as they can.
- Dominik Hasek, Buffalo Sabres & Detroit Red Wings
The approach to goaltending that Jim and John describe in this book has helped me understand the position better. As a head coach, I need to know that our goalies are well taken care of. Jim is both well liked and well respected by all of our goalies (from prospects to all-stars). Given the rich content of this book and the authors' attention to the smallest details, it is no wonder Jim is held in such high regard.
- Lindy Ruff, Buffalo Sabres
In order for me to make the big jumps from major junior to the AHL and then the AHL to the NHL, it became increasingly obvious that I had to expand upon my save skill repertoire. Jim Corsi, applying the concepts he and John Hannon cover in this book, helped me improve and successfully make this transition. If you, too, seek to become a serious student of the goalie position, then read this book cover to cover. It will change your whole philosophy about goaltending and make you more and more effective.
- Martin Biron, Buffalo Sabres
Goaltending by Daccord is better.......2003-02-03
If you already have or are considering Brain Daccord's Goaltending, then leave this one alone. It's not bad but Daccord's is better.
Helps me and my coach.......2002-10-08
Goalies are always looking for help so there coach can help them be better. The book has got good pictures so me and the coach can get along. The cool pictures of the pro goalies are awssome too. My coach says he likes the drills. Its a really good goalie book.

Book Description
"One of the most enchanting of all show-business memoirs." -Gary Giddins.
Reissued to coincide with the paperback publication of the definitive Bing biography by Gary Giddins, here is "a collection of anecdotes and reminiscences that is as warm and witty as any Crosby performance. [Bing] could have surely become a full-time writer had his schedule not been taken up with being one of the great entertainers of the century." -Will Friedwald

Yup, Lucky........2005-04-21
Crosby says about himself that he had no skill at acting or dancing and that his singing was more gimmick than talent, a strategy learned in vaudeville. If he hadn't been in town at the same time as Paul Whiteman, his life would have taken a different turn, and that would have been okay with him. As it was, he blew around in a wind that carried him to fame, fortune, race tracks, golf courses and professional friends. Otherwise, he made no contribution, he says, except for two recordings, and he isn't kidding. What we have here is a modest little man with a great deal to be modest about. Vain, conceited, self-centered, pretentious, affable--what media turns into icon. The book itself is a series of anecdotes distilled from conversations with a ghostwriter, interrupted when Bing swaps a highbrow word for a lowbrow one, reaching for distinction. He had an ache for attention, evidently, but his book never deals with the hungers of his personality. So he's not as interesting as the people he mentions, sometimes indiscretely, despite his own penchant for privacy. It was a wonderful ride. I'm glad he enjoyed it. But yesteryear's wisecrack is this year's yawn. For a show biz autobiography that sizzles with self-knowledge, read Oscar Levant's or Lennie Bruce's.
The great voice of the century.......2004-08-11
Pete Martin, the famous journalist and profile writer who spent a lot of his time working like a beaver for the classic Saturday Evening Post of the 1940s and 1950s--the Norman Rockwell years--and who departed for LOOK magazine when Rockwell did--wrote the bulk of this book, but he did it in close cooperation with the not always easy to work with Bing Crosby, who had attained a new plateau of popularity in the 1950s (when the book was first published). It seemed as if he had everything: wonderful talent, a devoted family, a gift not only for musical comedy but for drama too, as his turns in The Country Girl and Going My Way indicated. Though filmed considerably later than the period he describes in this book, "der Bingle" did a great job as a serial killer in Ira Levin's medical thriller, Dr. Cook's Garden. Bing had a warm, jazz-inspired delivery that wrapped itself around air like it was filled with honey, he was surely the warmest singer who ever lived. If his private life was more complicated than the Saturday Evening Post was then willing to print, what we have in CALL ME LUCKY is another side to the many-faceted Bing Crosby, a construction of grit, daring and tenderness that remains remarkably durable twenty years after his death.
Bing by Bing.......2004-02-28
I read this book as a teen years ago and just purchased the new paperback version. Bing's voice, even as filtered by Pete Martin, is evident here. He's not a deep 'teller of tales' in order to let us see all his personal angst. What we do see is a guy who struggles with parenting spirited boys, who grieves the loss of a wife, who downplays his talent and, as the book's title suggests, considers himself merely lucky. There's a lot of humor in this book and the caring Crosby feels for his family and his fellow entertainers is quite evident if not overly 'blatant'. Another perfect companion to the Gary Giddins book "Pocketful of Dreams"!
Undeniably Craosby.......1998-01-15
Bing Crosby comes to life in "Call Me Lucy". Each word, each sentence, every portion evokes Crosby's wonderful exalted form of speaking. This is not a tell-all biography, but rather a wonderful recant of anecdotes and humorous observations. Crosby tells amusing stories of Bob Hope, Paul Whiteman, Oscar Levant, Groucho Marx, Al Jolson, Fred Astaire, his wife, and his kids. He also spends time telling stories of his adventures on the golf course, in movies, on radio, and traveling the country with Paul Whiteman's band.
What's more, he tells the true stories of his rise to the top of show business. From being a team with his Washington pal Al Rinker, to getting the Academy Award for "Going My Way" in 1944.
In addition to this, he speaks frankly about his wife (who died not to long before the book was originally published). An honest, and teary moment.
All together, "Call Me Lucky" is a must to any Crosby fan. It's undeniably Crosby!

Not what I thought.......2007-02-15
I'm dog-obsessed and was looking for a cool dog calendar for 2007... I love M.E. but I could not find a good description - or preview of what was actually in this calendar. I think the title is misleading in that A Year with ME - could mean a year with MARY ENGELBRIET -- not "me". And You Lucky Dog! - like she's holding on the cover might mean the calendar is filled with adorable lucky dogs. It's not. It's cute, but not what I was looking for.. the search continues - can't find a cute illustrated DOG calendar.
Book Description
Julie Berman seems to have it all: a beautiful home in suburban New Jersey, a loving husband, a budding career as a freelance journalist, and two great kids. Little do the neighbors know that behind the façade, Julie is beginning to feel like her world is falling apart.
Among her worries is a nagging fear that she’s turning into her mother—just as neurotic, just as crazy, and just as consumed by appearances. Then there’s the handsome, charming, single, and very tempting editor at the local newspaper who has definitely taken a shine to her. Add to that her moody, monosyllabic teenage son, who may or may not be having sex with a new girlfriend. But the final blow to her sanity comes in the form of a phone call from her daughter, who informs Julie of her plans to run off with her new boyfriend . . . who’s also her college professor.
Lucky Me is a journey into the year when Julie realizes that there are some things beyond her control, especially the people she loves. Wise, irreverent, tender, and funny, Lucky Me is for every woman who has ever felt—despite her most valiant efforts—less than perfect.

Way Too Many Flashbacks!.......2007-07-28
Good thing I took this book out from the library instead of buying. The story may have been great, but I was too busy flipping pages and racing through the tedious flashbacks to find my way back to the story. Way too many flashbacks that were way too long! This would have been much better as an autobiography. That being said, however, the parts of the story that were in the present were very well written, and the dialogue was snappy.
"Lucky Me" -- not what readers will be saying upon completion of trite debut novel.......2007-03-02
Too pretentious to be a satire, too insipid to be social commentary, "Lucky Me," a smug, debut novel, is a listless exploration of the never-ending family travails suburban housewife and aspiring writer Julie Berman confronts. The author, Debra Borden, trots out every conceivable conundrum an attractive, angst-ridden middle-aged Jewish woman could face and deadens the protagonist's search for meaning with a predictable plot and a never-ending clutter of detail. The novel carries little suspense; its characters slog through the challenges that unsettle, but never truly threaten, their otherwise secure lives. This is a distressingly clichéd work, reinforcing rather than examining stereotypes about affluent Jewish mothers who supposedly have little else to do with their lives than chagrin their daughters.
Julie Berman faces a monosyllabic son who discovers the joy of sex, a blissfully devoted husband who is oblivious to his wife's boredom and perpetual anxieties and a bright collegiate daughter whose infatuation with her college professor exposes every crack in the supposedly solid relationship in the family. As if these difficulties were not enough, Julie has the hots for a local journalist and the miseries of trying to deal with her own mother's life-long passive-aggressive pathologies. Borden could have written a novel that treats an important theme: how adult children come to grips with the unintended cruelties inflicted on them by their parents. Instead, Julie's mother is little more than the Jewish mother from hell, and Julie's sufferings amount to little more than wringing her hands until she meets the oracular Dr. Bob, a mental health worker who doesn't even receive the dignity of a last name.
Not only does Borden insult her readers with a hackneyed plot and unaffecting characters; she inundates us with details that add nothing to the novel. Why in the world would anyone care to have a person-by-person accounting of a Passover dinner invitation list? Who cares what sexual positions her dogs assume when they decide that the Seder is the proper time to exercise their "feelings" for each other. Is it really important for us to know what designer labels Julie favors or what the enormous emotional toll exacted on her when she can't figure out exactly what outfit to wear to lunch?
"Lucky Me" is a novel of lost opportunities. Instead of elucidating the tumult, fear and anger an adult child needs to express in overcoming the long-term consequences of being raised by an oppressive parent, author Debra Borden supplies bromides and the predictable happy-ever-after conclusion a discerning reader could predict from page one. All that's missing from this tepid debut is a peel-off happy face. If good vibrations is what you're after, save your money -- buy some children's stickers rather than squander your money on this book.
Lucky Me.......2007-01-10
A wonderful read. I have purchased several copies to pass along to friends and family.
Funny.......2006-08-20
This author is hilarious. I was laughing through the whole book. I would love to meet the author, have drink and crack so jokes with her! Hurry and finish the second book!
Touching, beautifully written.......2006-04-08
It is hard to believe this is a first novel. The author has a way of telling her story that makes you feel like you are living it. I missed the characters when the story ended. I hope she writes another novel soon.

A sure-fire, guaranteed heart-pleaser!.......1999-02-25
One very run-down diner and three beautiful, independent sisters. Sounds like the makings for a perfect romance, doesn't it? Beloved romance author Judy Christenberry sets hearts aflutter again with her new "Lucky Charm Sisters" series by Silhouette. In her vivacious style, Christenberry acquaints her readers with the plucky O'Connor sisters and the tiny converted-trolley car/diner, called The Lucky Charm, that binds their lives together. In the first edition, "Marry Me, Kate," (Silhouette, Jan.) Kate O'Connor (the red-headed eldest sister) is desperately trying to revive her late father's luck at The Lucky Charm diner by converting it into a catering business. Only one problem stands in the way of her dreams: money. Desperate, she appeals to wealthy socialite businessman Wil Hardison for assistance in the form of a business grant. But Wil has a better idea. All Kate has to do is marry him, in name only, for one year, and he will make sure her business is a success. Sounds like a great deal on paper. But what happens if one of them should happen to fall in love? The "Lucky Charm Sisters" are a charmingly delightful series from a delightfully charming author, and one of my favorite people. Judy Christenberry's romances are sure-fire, guaranteed heart-pleasers.

A horrible behavioral role model for kids . . . . .......2005-02-28
This book shows us a child who is very ungrateful and constantly "embarassed" by his Grandma who is "different" from what he thinks a "typical" Grandma should be. (Of course, now days those stereotypes are OFTEN wrong) The child's attitude stinks. He should be grateful to have a grandma who spends time with him! The Grandma at one point also lies to get a man to put out his cigar and thinks that she shouldn't have to wait in line to buy ball game tickets like everyone else simply because she is a grandma (who doesn't have any health problems and is very active, so that is not a factor). Way to go to be a good role model, Grandma! We were so disgusted by this book and its very poor messages to kids that we didn't even finish reading it. Even if it was "all worked out in the end" (which it really isn't), the bad behavior and attitudes along the way are not excused or apologized for adequately or at all. I would NOT recommend this book.
Great story about a boy and his grandmother.......1999-10-09
This is a book for a beginning reader. It captures the relationship of a typical nine year old and his grandmother who is not so "typical." Illustrated with lovely photos, it has an engaging family centered story line and includes a trip to a baseball stadium.
