Book Description
A veteran birder and gifted nature writer is our guide in this charming, surprising, informative, and unexpectedly exciting foray into the wild kingdom that flourishes quietly just beyond our backyards. Logged within a few miles of his suburban Connecticut home, Robert Winkler's local life list runs to hundreds of birds, from familiars like American Robins and Blue Jays to such rarities as American White Pelicans and Sandhill Cranes. He's been attacked by a Northern Goshawk, watched a pair of Bald Eagles perform a mid-flight mating dance, stumbled over a wriggling den of copperheads, and spotted such shy and elusive creatures as red foxes, coyotes, and flying squirrels.
These vivid anecdotes and many more are woven into a fascinating tapestry of bird lore and birding wisdom, embroidered with an abiding, observant love of all animal life. A book that will delight birders everywhere and fascinate nature lovers of all stripes, Going Wild celebrates the often-overlooked yet amazingly rich world that starts so close to home.
Customer Reviews:
Going Wild will have you going nutty, about birds.......2007-02-09
I originally bought this book for my young nephew who is interested in birds. I am glad I took up this book myself, borrowing it from him a few days after giving it to him, before he could start on the book himself.
Reading Going Wild had the effect of exploding the natural world, seen and heard through the prism of birds, before my own eyes and ears. Being a life-long resident of suburbia myself, for the most part living in northern Virginia close to the Potomac River, I had had some memorable encounters with birds, most notably perhaps when a Bald Eagle played tag with me (there's that anthropomorphizing). What is inspirational about reading Going Wild is that it revs you up for even more bird interaction than you've been accustomed to. And you can't blame a dearth of bird experiences on living in a suburban setting. Once you read about Robert Winkler's adventures, from dodging a maternal goshawk to watching the life-and-death scenes unfold around the backyard bird feeder, you'll be eager to rack up your own.
Going Wild is also an excellent primer on birding, full of practical knowledge deftly delivered. I am lucky to be introduced to this world (my own world, it turns out) by someone as uniquely gifted as Robert Winkler.
What Birding is all about........2005-12-09
This is an excellent book describing what birding is all about;well written by someone who has , if they pick it up in their youth, maintains the interest the rest of their life.Winkler is very typical, even though hardly any two birders are identical and all alter the area of their interest as the years go on.He talks mainly about his birding experiences in the general area around where he lives in Connecticut;but it reflects the same things a birder partakes in no matter where he/she lives in North America. If Winkler were to relocate to Key West,Tucson,San Francisco,Detroit,Denver,Vancouver,Halifax or where I live,Toronto,he would be able to pick up his birding in a very short time.I guess it's a bit like fishing;where there's water, there's fish;and where there is outdoors there's birds and all that nature provides along with it. I also believe that it is the great variety of activities that come under the umberella of Birding that makes it so attractive.Winkler touches on a lot of these things and there are many more.Just to name a few; many birders "get into"..banding,club activities,Hawk Watching, photography, drawing, listing (building the greatest list of species you can in an area, town, county, state, your own property, from your car, country, life or year, winter list-total species from Dec 1-Feb 28,..it is up to the individual to choose and make the rules.
That is the whole idea of a Rare Bird;a new one for your list.
So you can see volumes could be written;but this book gives a person a real smattering of this hobby, sport, activity, interest, pastime, or as some might call it an obsession or madness.
There is another aspect of birding that probably transends all this is the friends one makes. As a matter of fact, birders often meet another birder in the field and strike up an acquaintace immediately. They enjoy sharing what they know or have found.
Winkler also shows that along with birds there is the great experience of being outside and enjoying all the other nature and animals that go along with it.If one travels ,you will encounter all kinds of interesting and wildly different areas. What comes to mind is being in a small boat out in the Gulf Stream,on the trails in the mountains of Yosemite, walking along the banks of the river at Niagara Falls in the winter,in the heat of the desert in Arizona with the snakes tarantulas and lizards,in the Everglades or your own local spot as Winkler talks about. What he really does is show that the enjoyment can come wherever one lives.
Overall, this is a book every person will enjoy whether you have been into it for a number of years or just thinking about it.
His experiences are just like any other birder who has been doing it for years. It is all there ,just for the taking.
The only shortcoming of this book is there was no photo of the author. You can read all the description of a bird you want, but nothing compares to a picture.Come to think about it,looking at birders is great sport when the birding gets slow.
A whimsical yet educational gathering of birding wisdom and lore which makes for light, delightful reading.......2005-11-07
Robert Winkler's Going Wild: Adventures With Birds In The Suburban Wilderness presents the experiences of a veteran birder and nature writer who observes literally hundreds of birds from within a few miles of his suburban Connecticut home. Funny encounters, intriguing observations and natural history blend in a whimsical yet educational gathering of birding wisdom and lore which makes for light, delightful reading.
A trip through the wilderness.......2005-02-02
Going Wild is a fascinating and detailed account of one man`s birdwatching forays into the suburban wilderness. The narrative ranges from anecdotes about him being attacked by Northern Goshawks, to the story of when he lost the power to his home due to a squirrel electrocuting itself on his power line - these tales can bring a tear to your eye, or have you laughing out loud.
With Robert Winkler, National Geographic, have found a genuine birder with an obvious talent for writing - you can tell he has a deep passion for the wilds of his native Connecticut home, and for all of nature`s finery. His writing displays beautiful style and is clearly heartfelt - a treatment which does justice to the subject matter.
My only gripe [and this is purely jealousy on my part] is about his different opinion to mine on what constitutes a suburban area! The forested mountains and lakes of his stories are hardly the same as my own suburban patch, which is surrounded by industrial units and housing!
Whether you are American, British, or any other nationality, this book will translate to your own experiences, the species and locations involved will likely differ, but the stories hold true no matter what. I can give no better plaudit than saying I will recommend this book to all my birdwatching compatriots, and anyone else who harbours the slightest feeling for the natural world.

Book Description
Seeking a closer connection with nature than the manicured lawns of suburbia, naturalist Fred Gehlbach and his family built a house on the edge of a wooded ravine in Central Texas in the mid-1960s. On daily walks over the hills, creek hollows, and fields of the ravine, Gehlbach has observed the cycles of weather and seasons, the annual migrations of birds, and the life cycles of animals and plants that also live in the ravine. In this book, Gehlbach draws on thirty-five years of journal entries to present a composite, day-by-day almanac of the life cycles of this semiwild natural island in the midst of urban Texas. Recording such events as the hatching of Eastern screech owl chicks, the emergence of June bugs, and the first freeze of November, he reminds us of nature's daily, monthly, and annual cycles, from which humans are becoming ever more detached in our unnatural urban environments. The long span of the almanac also allows Gehlbach to track how local and even global developments have affected the ravine, from scars left by sewer construction to an increase in frost-free days probably linked to global warming. This long-term record of natural cycles provides one of only two such baseline data sets for North America. At the same time, the book is an eloquent account of one keen observer's daily interactions with his wild and human neighbors and of the lessons in connectedness and the "play of life" that they teach.

Nature's Restoration: People and Places on the Front Lines of Conservation

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for all.......2005-09-05
In the traditions of Aldo Leopold and Gene Stratton-Porter, Friderici brings the ordinary to life - the invisible environment we pass through every day, mostly without a hint of awareness. A deep rendering of the remnants of nature that are left in the housing developments, corporate parks and fragments of moraine and ravine ecosystems that are the only reminders of the area's glacial past. I highly recommend this book to anyone familiar with the area - it will make you look aroun and more aware of your environment during your daily commute!
hidden treasures.......2005-05-09
In a way it's a shame that this book has the title and blurb that it does, which imply that this book would be of interest only to suburbanites, or even more specifically only to Chicago suburbanites. But just as Chicago's Field Museum is a world-class natural history museum that draws and enlightens visitors from around the world, Friederici's book deserves a much wider audience than just suburbanites or Chicagoans. His eye and prose are just as poetic and informed as that of anyone at work today in the field of literary nature writing. This book contains some great writing and encounters and insights. The best nature writers are looking for the world in a grain of sand, and even though this book goes against the literary "grain" in not setting out for a remote and sublime wilderness, it still finds plenty of interesting grains of sand on the Chicago lakeshore.
The Suburban Wild by P.Friederici.......1999-12-20
It was a real pleasure to read this slim volume of essays by Peter Friederici. The poetic style in describing his impressions while walking through the woods of Suburbia or while reminiscing about his childhood makes one relaxed and feeling good. His background of a naturalist makes some other essays very interesting and enlightening. I recommend this little gem to every suburbanite who likes to read, sitting in an armchair close to the window, occasionally peering out at the birds and the squirrels by the feeder, savoring the words of pleasant and knowledgable poet.

Wildlife Warrior: More Tales of Suburban Safaris
ASIN: 1882203771 |
Book Description
Tim Harrison has been called to remove bears from apartments, lions from city streets, bats from swimming pools, pythons from workshops, and cougars from backyards. He has met, and rescued, alligators from local rivers, farm ponds, pet stores and basements. He has raised a Bengal tiger and has mothered wolves. Pythons call his Springboro address home. Yet Wild Times, a collection of his wildest "suburban safaris", wasn't written to compete with reality TV. The stories are hair-raising, and sometimes frightening. But Tim's goal is to let people know of the growing chance that they'll be coming across an exotic or local wild animal as their population increases in suburbs across the country. Harrison is a twenty-year veteran police officer, firefighter, and EMT-paramedic for the City of Oakwood in Montgomery County, Ohio. His popular speaking programs are legendary. Finally, he's wrestled his stories between the covers of a book.
Customer Reviews:
Recommended reading for animal rights activists.......2002-09-08
Written by an experienced animal control handler of exotic wildlife Tim Harrison, Wild Times: Tales From Suburban Safaris is an amazing collection of true life anecdotes and candidly personal stories. From rescuing alligators, to rehabilitating birds of prey, to dealing with lions in city streets, and more, Wild Times is the fascinating true chronicle of a man with a unique love of wildlife, and is charged with the sometime difficult duty of protecting both humans and wild animals from one another. Wild Times is very entertaining and especially recommended reading for animal rights activists and wildlife enthusiasts.
The Next Jack Hanna.......2001-10-23
This guy and his stories are great! He's a firefighter, policeman, paramedic who, for the last twenty years, has been called to remove bears from apartments, lions from city streets, pythons from worksops, and cougers from backyards. He has met, and rescued, alligators from local rivers and farm ponds, pet stores and basements. His wildest captures are in this book. But his goal is to let people know of the growing chance that they'll be coming across an exotic, wild animal as their population increases in suburbs across the country, and to discourage people from buying and keeping this animals as pets!Excellent (lifesaving) snakebite protocol in the back of the book. Great stories for all ages.

Book Description
What would you do if a ten-foot Albino Burmese Python slithered out from behind your toilet--while you were sitting on it? Or if a supposedly "tame" cougar escaped and ran, scared and angry, through your neighborhood? Or if a former pet wolf snatched hot dogs off your campground picnic table?
Tim Harrison's latest book, Wildlife Warrior: More Tales Of Suburban Safaris, shows how the ignorance of those who own exotic animals and the fear of the general population leads to wild encounters that are often fatal--for both humans and the animals.
Self-proclaimed "Wildlife Warrior" and animal activist, Harrison sees almost daily what most popular animal shows fail to mention. His chilling and sad experiences, while rescuing exotic animals from misguided exotic pet owners, have led him on a crusade to educate people about the foolishness of trying to own inherently wild creatures.
Wildlife Warrior: More Tales of Suburban Safaris is Harrison's second book detailing an entire menagerie of exotic animals that he has encountered over the past 30 years. As a police officer, firefighter and paramedic for the City of Oakwood, Ohio, and as founder of "Outreach for Animals," an organization that assists in the rescue of exotic animals, Harrison has devoted his life to saving people from dangerous animals, and exotic animals from dangerous people.
Harrison leaves no doubt as to his side of this controversial subject. He has been involved with wildlife rescues, rehabilitation, and raising animals since he was 13 years old. Harrison recently advocated laws that forbid the ownership of exotic animals within Cleveland and Dayton city limits. He spends much of his free time educating people, hopeful that the day will come when owning exotic pets will not be viewed as a status symbol, and these truly wild animals will be allowed to be, well, wild.

Great Book!.......2007-06-27
I first purchased "The Fighter's Body: An Owner's Manual: Your Guide to Diet, Nutrition, Exercise and Excellence in the Martial Arts" and found it to be very practical and focused on what I needed to focus on as a studying martial artists. I followed this book up with:
- Timing in the Fighting Arts: Your Guide to Winning in the Ring and Surviving on the Street
- Solo Training: The Martial Artist's Guide to Training Alone
- Fighter's Fact Book: Over 400 Concepts, Principles, and Drills to Make You a Better Fighter
All of these are great books and I look forward to selling my house (I had to hide Bob from perspective buyers... that face!) so that I can put Bob in my new garage and start abusing him with all of these new concepts... one by one... it will take a while!
Thanks!
David
Don't think of it just for punches and kicks.......2007-05-07
I have no reason to fight people on the street however this book has some insights into how the body can be better trained for the fighting I do do. I fence and do Kendo and the chapters that focus on the fists have some excellent quickness and distance drills. Nearly all the other chapters have something that can be applied more generally to quite a few martial arts, even fencing. The philosophy behind the training ideals are in pretty good standing seeing as I have started to study Musashi and several other ancient martial philosophers. Mr. Cristensen has a very good look at the physical, mental, and philosophical side of the martial arts. I would recommend this book as a supplement to training and not to be taken by itself, although it is good and has many good ideas for those that have an idea of the terminology he is using.
A Martial Arts Must-Have.......2007-04-12
Any martial arts practitioner should have this important reference book in their library. This guide explains which techniques work, and which do not.
Great!.......2007-04-11
This book is awesome for both the novice and the advanced student. While I only picked up a few new things, it was a great reminder of all the things that I have learned over the years and most of which has slipped my mind. Highly recommended!
Fighter's Fact Book.........a great suppliment for today's martial arts teacher.......2007-01-13
Mr. Christensen has put together a fighter's manual that speaks volumes for the modern martial arts practitioner. Keeping to a basic, non-embellished vernacular, he lays out in plain english what works and doesn't work when training in fighting techniques. As an instructor myself, I found this manual to be invaluable as a tool for putting into words what most successful martial artists feel in their hearts and gut regarding the fighting instinct. The challenge for the instructor, daily, is how to convey these inherent and aquired insticts to the student in a manner that is easier to understand and absorb. This book helps the readers to better understand theirselves and allows the light to come on much more quickly. I highly recommend this work as an essential foundation to the library of any martial artist, student or teacher.

A map.......2002-10-17
This map is just too small. Names of most streets do not appear on it which makes it useless to find exacltly where you are. Additional information such as public toilets seem a good idea until you realized that you find them everywhere in Istanbul while according to the map there is only one place for the whole city! In conclusion I found this map useful only the first day as a reminder of the layout of the city and never used it again.
this is a wonderful map.......2000-06-30
This map was much, much better than any of the maps in our guidebook. It was easy to read, well laid out, and had every point of interest we were interested in clearly marked: mosques, museums, ruins, public transportation, Turkish baths, and even public toilets.
It's actually four maps in one: greater Istanbul, old Istanbul (most of the tourist stuff is here), the Topkapi Palace, and central Istanbul. It also includes a walking tour, an index, and a short Turkish-English glossary.
Don't go to Istanbul without it.
A good map, just a bit too small.......2000-03-16
This is a handy map of Istanbul, but unfortunately, it's lacking in size; If you're just visiting the centre city, it'll be great for your travel needs, but if you're venturing out of the city, it's missing a bit in that department. :o)

While growing up on the tough streets of Los Angeles, Santiago's greatest joy is playing soccer. So it is a dream come true when a British scout sees him playing in the park and offers him a trial with one of England's top Premiership clubs. Determined to succeed, Santiago leaves behind his struggling family and his modest home, and flies halfway around the world to give it his best shot.
But it's not smooth sailing when Santiago arrives in northern England. Team practices are intense, and in this place where people live and breathe the sport, many seem eager to find fault with the new Latino player from L.A. The pressure even spurs Santiago to keep a secret that could sabotage his performance. There is no doubt that Santiago has skill, flair, and dedication. But does he have the stamina he will need for the English game?
Based on the action-packed movie, Goal! is a gripping tale of trial and tribulation set against the backdrop of the world's most popular and exciting sport.
