Book Description
Freshwater mussels of the family
Unionidae, also known as naiads, have inhabited fresh waters around the world for the last 400 million years. Here in Texas, the presence of these unique mollusks ensures our water quality, helps support the worldwide pearl industry, and, in a quirk of history, influenced the founding of San Angelo. Yet their continued survival is by no means certain, due to overharvesting, environmental degradation, and the rapid spread of exotic mussel species.
To help professional biologists and amateur naturalists know and preserve these mollusks, this book provides baseline reference material for all 52 species of freshwater mussels in Texas. It focuses particularly on the unionids, with brief descriptions of other freshwater bivalves. A typical entry includes the following information:
- Scientific and common names
- Distribution (with a range map)
- Size / Shell / Shell teeth
- External color / Internal color
- Soft tissues / Habitat / Spawning
- Glochidia / Hosts
- Economic importance
- Comments
Color photos illustrate each species. In addition to the descriptions, the authors offer general discussions of freshwater mussel anatomy, biology, ecology, and commercial uses.
Customer Reviews:
Most comprehensive resource on freshwater mussels in Texas.......2001-03-13
Bob Howells is "The Mussel Guy" for Texas. This book, co-written with Raymond Neck and Harold Murray, is the most comprehensive publication on the status of freshwater mussels in Texas. This is a valuable resource for aquatic ecologists interested in mussels, which are a conservation concern due to declining abundance across the state. This guide presents species accounts with black-and-white photographs on each species present in Texas. Descriptions, geographic distributions, and ecological information is included. Introductory material covers everything from mussel anatomy and behavior to collecting gear and commercial uses. The guide is indexed and fully referenced. Several pages of color plates in the appendix are a nice extra. No self-respecting student of Texas mussels should be without it!

Customer Reviews:
Old School.......2007-08-11
This book was OK but nothing that a person with any knowledge of body weight exercise wouldn't already know. The exercises were all basic pushups pullups situps and body weight squats that included some variations of each exercise. It also had some plyo. type exercises and stretching advice, but again, nothing that most seasoned fitness people wouldn't already know to some degree. I purchased the book hoping that it would include some hard endurance type workouts but that was not the case. There is workouts included but just not what I was looking for, but for someone else they might be great.
Overall, if you're looking for a book that provides some body weight exercises to get yourself in shape this book will work for you, however you may have to up the intensity of the workouts depending on what kind of shape you are in presently.
It works.......2007-06-07
I bought this at the end of January and began doing routines immediately. The two bodyweight circuit routines (every other day, in the afternoons), the abs routine (each morning), and the "isoexplosive" routine (on off days, in the afternoons) work very well together.
Since the end of January, I've lost 25 lbs and went from doing five of most exercises to doing twenty, with most push-up variations with my feet elevated to lift more of my own weight. I've also thrown in some pull-ups by tossing a towel over a sturdy door, and pistol squats. The few diet tips -- eat protein right after working out, essentially -- are also handy. My strength and stamina have increased, I look better, and had to buy new clothing for the summer as the old stuff was just falling off me.
This won't turn you into the fellow on the cover, of course, but if you're like me and just won't go to the gym (too far away, too expensive), all you need is a patch of floor and you're good to go, and least if you've not exercised much before, or have had an injury (as I did).
I also recommend buying a jump rope and getting in some cardio that way.
Compact nugget of good information.......2007-03-11
This little book packs a lot of value into a few pages. What I like best about this book is it cuts out the fluff. It is brief and to the point on it's coverage of general nutrition and bodyweight training aspects. Most importantly, it contains a verity of workouts ranging from; full body circuits, back care, balance and abdominal routines. Selections are short, sweet and well organized.
Highlights:
- Two, 22 minute full body, bodyweight circuits (great for those days when you want to focus on active recovery and give your body a rest from your regular heavy lifting)
- One, 15 minute high intensity workout (Good for when you are crunched on time)
- A Valuable 7 minute "save your back routine" (Doing this will relieve the pain in your back, after a day of sitting at your desk.)
- Good verity of well illustrated stretches
- Solid, basic selection of well illustrated bodyweight exercises
The total content of this book is under a 100 pages, but it manages to provide great photos and a good verity of workouts. This book is a great little handbook for those who are looking to venture down the path of bodyweight exercises. Another plus is this book is small enough to take with you as a reminder to squeeze in a workout.
Well organized program.......2006-09-21
Includes complete routines for a thorough, total body workout using a wide variety of clearly illustrated bodyweight exercises. Practical guide for those interested in developing functional strength and improving their bodyweight to strength fitness ratio. Includes high quality photos and text typical of all Men's Health publications.

Book Description
Airmen in Vietnam weren't above the hell of war-but they went beyond the call of duty.
It was America's longest, most withering war, as hellish in the air as it was on the ground. But little has been told of the airmen who fought, who died, who lived and dared to remember...until now. Three dozen airmen tell their secret stories of the air war in Vietnam the only way it ought to be told: in their own words. In this brutally accurate picture of brave men fighting a tragic war-a portrait that touches upon every branch of the armed forces-aviation journalist Philip D. Chinnery finally honors the heroes who have been nearly forgotten.
Customer Reviews:
FULL THROTTLE.......2002-02-13
A friend who flew out of Udorn AFB in Thailand as a KC-135 navigator gave me this book, as he knew I might know some of the characters in it. I did, and some of the stories I tell in OUTLAWS IN VIETNAM correspond and back up some of these exploits. My tour was in UH-1D helicopters out of Vinh Long in the Delta. The Seven Mountains area is aptly described, as well as the old French minefield at Chi Lang that blew up a Knight aircraft as he depicted. Phillip Chinnery hung out with some of the VHPA aviators a few years back to garner up these stories, and they are well presented. It is unfortunate that a lot of the guys who flew these birds can't write well enought to record these amazing times. Another good book to have on your RVN shelf.
A fascinating collection of airwar experience.......2001-02-22
Personal testimonies of fighters are always very interesting, each tale gives a touch of human dimension in wars coolly and distantly narrated by freelancers or reporters. In this book there is a vivid picture of the burden to wage aerial war in Vietnam, a scar still painful in memories of those who fought it. Their stories are well worth a careful reading since they reveal the psychological attitude of the airmen and their lifestyle under the strain of action. This portrait is accurate and gripping, giving many details of how tactics, training and hardware worked under real condition (contrary to the flawless operations of a peacetime simulation). Clearly some stories are edifying experience of servicemen that went beyond the call of duty, but largely most of them resound of day to day life and of behaviour of common soldiers towards the harshness of fight. Compelling.

Customer Reviews:
tourism in Vietnam.......2007-04-17
If you want to learn more than how to be a tourist, but what tourism means in Vietnam and to its people this is the book for you. Overall this is just an average book. I would recommend it for those perhaps doing a report on the subject, but for the average person planning to visit Vietnam it didn't really meet my needs. Berger does write about personal experiences and what he thinks are important aspects of the country, but the writing is bland and the book is not exceptional in any way I would describe. There are some photographs, both color and black and whites and they do add to the descriptions by the author.

Book Description
This book makes an innovative contribution to understanding the relationships between two of the most significant social and economic phenomena of contemporary society: tourism and migration. This has hitherto been a largely neglected field of research but there is now burgeoning interest in the subject amongst both tourism and population geographers, and a realisation of their shared interests in the changing forms of circulation and temporary mobility, and the increasingly evident impact of economic and cultural globalisation in producing new forms of leisure, working, and retirement lives.
In this volume the editors have brought together a number of distinguished contributors from many different parts of the world to explore the many different forms of tourism-migration relationships, paying attention to both the global processes of change and the contingencies of place and space. The book provides an extensive guide to the relevant literature as well as case studies from countries as diverse as Australia, Hungary, Israel, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, and the United States and discussions of the significance of the Caribbean, Chinese, and Vietnamese diasporas for tourism and migration relationships.

Book Description
In 1988, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) regarded tourism in Vietnam as being 20 years behind other Southeast Asian destinations. Tourism-supporting infrastructure was limited and basic at best. Visitors to Vietnam, who were primarily on socio-economic exchanges or overseas Vietnamese visiting family, were not typical leisure tourists and few traditional tourism activities were offered. Against this backdrop, the World Trade Organization projected that Vietnam could only receive 1 million international visitors per year by 2000. In fact, this assertion proved to be quite incorrect; Vietnam first welcomed over 1 million visitors as early as 1994 and received over 2 million visitors in 2000.

Using HOLSAT to evaluate tourist satisfaction at destinations: The case [An article from: Tourism Management]

Description:
The potential of Vietnam as a holiday destination for Australian travellers is examined using HOLSAT, a new model that compares the performance of positive and negative holiday attributes against a holidaymaker's expectations [Tribe, J., & Snaith, T. (1998). From SERVQUAL to HOLSAT: Holiday satisfaction in Varadero, Cuba. Tourism Management, 19, 25-34]. The attributes used are developed for each particular application and are not generic, overcoming some of the limitations of earlier models in dealing with the concept of holiday satisfaction. This paper seeks to review the value of HOLSAT as a means of identifying tourists' satisfaction with a holiday destination, in this case Vietnam. The findings indicate that the HOLSAT model is a valuable tool that can be used to evaluate the satisfaction of tourists with particular destinations. It proved to be easy to apply and a useful diagnostic tool that can be used in the future planning and management of the tourism industry in Vietnam, enabling wholesale and retail travel agents to improve levels of service and develop appropriate products to meet the expectations of the Australian travel market.

Book Description
New This Quarter January arrivals rise strongly Vietnam’s visitor arrivals increased strongly in January 2007, after a somewhat disappointing year in 2006. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) reported that it registered 369,000 arrivals in January, representing a 9.5% rise year-on-year. This comes after VNAT confirmed its preliminary 2006 arrivals estimate at just below 3.6mn, only a 3% y-o-y increase. While the January figures bode well for the continuing strength of the tourist sector, monthly arrivals will have to rise if VNAT is to meet its target of 4.2-4.4mn tourist arrivals in 2007, equating to a y-o-y increase of 18%. The tourist sector is seeking to improve its attractiveness by investing in greater tourist promotion abroad, further training of personnel, especially tour guides, and more investment in tourist infrastructure. However, these are medium-term projects and are unlikely to have a major impact on 2007 figures. We continue to predict visitor arrival growth of 13% y-o-y in 2007, below VNAT’s somewhat optimistic forecast. Key risks to this scenario continue to be a resurgence of the H5N1 avian flu virus. Vietnam discovered cases of the virus in birds in four provinces since January 2007, indicating that its hitherto successful policy of culling and containment is now less effective. As before, concerns regarding the possibility of human to human transmission will continue to have a negative impact on the tourist sector.

From the supplier: The liberalization process in Vietnam since 1986 and the potential of hotel and tourist investment in the country are discussed. After 1986, visitors were allowed into the country. Since then, Vietnam has actively pursued foreign investment for the construction of hotels to support the potential influx of visitors. Over $987 million was invested by Jun. 1993. However, securing capital for investment in Vietnam proved problematic since it is a high risk area. In addition, its financial and banking system is still primitive and its infrastructure is practically non-existent.

Book Description
Seventeen year-old Eliza Brown was born and raised on a small island with barely enough room for the lighthouse her family must attend to 24 hour a day. Although she rows a mile each day to school on City Island, work and family responsibilities have never allowed her to have a social life there. But when a family tragedy brings her to live with her older sister and her husband on City Island, her life changes entirely. Eliza's first months on the island are a time of flowering, of dangerous romance, and of growing friendships.
Customer Reviews:
So bad I actually threw it away!.......2006-06-17
The last review sounds like the author wrote it - not a child. Or perhaps the child borrowed from the "Author's Note" at the back of the book since it is so similar.
I was so disappointed in this book. The very first review on the inside cover says "Readers of LM Montgomery's Anne...will find in Eliza a kindred spirit." Neither Anne nor LM Montgomery would consider Eliza a kindred spirit. In fact, Anne would keep far from her! I'm glad I reviewed this book before giving it to my neice. The first page is so good (which is what I read in the store) it is shocking how fast it goes downhill.
The first chapter describes her brother Sam "Almost 22, he was a self-centered, reckless whiskey-drinking fool who collected dead animals' bones for a hobby....What was more, his anger was frightening. Something about Sam wasn't right." Then one page later Sam begins talking about drinking and prostitutes ("Who's Big May?" "She's one of the prostitutes from the Bucket of Blood...Sam's favorite place to have a beer or whiskey. pg 8 )
Eliza's father, page 9, "He didn't say much, though he liked to curse..." and then he does. Not a book I want my child to read!
On Page 18 Eliza tries to make a case that Jesus Christ was married to Mary Magdalene.
It's just more of the above. She gets bored in church. She fishes her brother out of saloons. Etc. Why would I want my child to read about this dysfunctional family as though it was normal? Where is anything remotely similar to any of LM Montgomery's books? There is a lighthouse...that's about it!
Keeping a Good Light- The true meanings.......2003-06-05
A Short Summary
16-year-old Eliza Brown lives in a lighthouse. She is a fabulous artist and loves to teach. Living in the lighthouse though, she doesn't have many friends. She writes a message in a bottle and throws it into the sea. Eliza hopes someday someone will read it, and she will get a new friend. Later on in her life, her dear brother Peter dies. Eliza then has to go lives with her married sister on the island by her mother's will. Things are different there though. Eliza encounters problems, happiness, sadness, great new friend, a new life, a teaching career, marriage proposals, and a few things that she will remember for all her life. Eliza is lost in her mind, and she doesn't know which path to take. She is not sure what to do anymore. Read this book to find out more.
Why I Recommend It
I really do suggest you read this book. It has fascinated me when I borrowed it from the library. I even ended up buying it later on. I felt as if I could actually see everything in front of me. I could feel the sadness and sorrow Eliza felt sometimes. This book is a truly touching book, and it also tells you that if you send a message to the universe the universe gives you an answer. Someday you shall find true friends and true happiness
I've grown up with this book!.......2001-08-14
I've read this book three times, at ages 9, 10, and now again at 13. It really gets better each time and I just love it! I feel that I got the most out of it at age 13, but there's not really anything that shouldn't be read by a 9 year old and I enjoyed it then, too.
'Keeping the Good Light' is about 16 year-old Eliza Brown who lives at the Stepping Stones Light House with her family. Their job is to keep the lighthouse lantern burning at all times, so as to warn ships of jagged and dangerous rocks that could mean death. Stepping Stones Lighthouse is off the coast of City Island, New York, where Eliza rows each day to attend school and church. When a loved one dies and her sister becomes pregnant, Eliza moves in with her sister and her husband at City Island's parsonage. Eliza's new life brings her many new opportunities- becoming a teacher, making new friends, and attending social gatherings. All is well for a while, but Eliza's grief over her loss eventually overwhelms her. She begins seeking comfort with Ralph, her brother's old friend, who is a wild, unattached, and mysterious man. This secret friendship soon blossoms into love, but Ralph is a social disgrace and not one to settle down with a job, home, and wife. By the time Eliza realizes that her relationship with Ralph will never work, she has disgraced herself and lost her teaching position. Read this wonderful book to learn how Eliza pulls through and, showing bravery, wits, and love, gains an opportunity for a bright future.
Keeping the Good Light.......2000-08-28
This book is sad and meaningful. It takes place in 1903-1904. It tells about the life of a fictional character, Eliza Charity Brown. It tells about her acomplishments and her rough times. This is a great book for girls. I would recommend that girls read this book. It is an excellent book.
