Book Description

In this edition of Miller's ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, a new Student CD-ROM, INTERACTIVE CONCEPTS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, has been added! This groundbreaking addition integrates nearly 100 engaging animations and interactions with chapter summaries, flashcards, and Web-based quizzes. Organized by chapter, students will find links to relevant resources, narrated animations, interactive figures, and prompts to review material and test themselves. The animations show complex processes and relationships unfolding on screen, such as the effects of acid rain, smog formation, and the phosphorus cycle. Narration allows students to focus on what is changing on screen while interactions allow students to explore figures in more depth. This Tenth Edition is a significant, all-encompassing revision providing continuing focus on the basic scientific content necessary to understand environmental issues in clear, straightforward language. It provides the latest developments and reflects several major shifts in environmental science education this century. Designed as a foundational text for environmental science courses, Miller's flexible book is adaptable to almost any approach, and is the most widely embraced approach to environmental science in print. With fair and balanced coverage and Internet tools integrated throughout, the book features an extensively developed art program, writing that communicates scientific information clearly and effectively, and the most current coverage of the subject. The book's flexible organization means that it can be adapted to fit almost any syllabus. Miller's more than 30 years of research and teaching expertise make this the definitive book on the subject. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE: WORKING WITH THE EARTH, Tenth Edition is a concise alternative to G. Tyler Miller?s best-selling text LIVING IN THE ENVIRONMENT, which redefines the environmental science course and sets the standard by which every other book for this course is judged.

Environmental Science/Tenth Edition.Excellent condition. No highlighting, torn pages or other marks. Sealed CD (Interactive Concepts in Environmental Science) included with book.

5 out of 5 stars A great text for teaching Environmental Science.......2006-05-05

I began teaching with Miller's thicker text "living in the environment" but found that the main material was covered by this thinner and less expensive version. The graphics are helpful and the students enjoy reading the material as it is presented in an accessible and applicable fashion. The guest essays and case studies are from some of the top names speaking at conferences and so students are getting some really current views and information. Although there is not much of a lab book or teacher text-- there are plenty of other sources for field work and activity inspiration. The students also liked the website for activities and practice problems.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent from multiple excellent thoughts ..........2006-03-01

Thyler Miller's books (I have 5 of them) are always the source of inspiration for me. I started reading his book when I took my Environmental Health Class for my Master of Public Helath Program.

The contents are clear, concise, correct, courtesy and full with critical thouught that has facilitated my curiosity to know more and more ....

4 out of 5 stars explains issues like population growth and global warming.......2006-02-25

Miller stresses the intricate interrelationships with the Earth's environment. Vital issues like population growth and its impact on the environment are gone into. Here, there is perhaps cautious optimism. But only if we as a species moderate our growth rate (maybe even turn it negative!) and resource consumption.

There is a natural flow from this issue to a discussion about global warming. The scientific basis for concern is explained, and the evidence for warming presented. While not absolutely conclusive, it is seen as very strong. In fact, in the 5 years since the book came out, even more evidence has appeared to indicate a continuing and possibly accelerating trend. Miller also suggests several ways that global warming might be slowed.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall if you want to learn..........2007-05-08

This book is great if you really want to learn how to snowboard. In my opinion nothing can take the place of one-on-one or group lessons... but this book is a great compliment to help reinforce what you learn (or figure out) on the slopes.

The illustrations are also really really helpful, so you can figure out what should be where and what it all looks like. And wear a helmet!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Title for Beginner.......2007-02-23

Cindy Kleh's book, while not packed with information for all riders, does an excellent job of conveying the keys to successful snowboarding. I'm a relative novice to the sport, and found this an invaluable tool in helping me survive those first days on the mountain. Snowboarding is decidedly unintuitive; Ms. Kleh expertly tells what one should be doing using clear prose and detail. For the intermediate rider looking to improve his/her repertoire of tricks, there are other titles more suitable to that range of rider. For the beginner this is the best organized book of the bunch that I've read. I should note that it's also wonderfully photographed.

5 out of 5 stars If you like pictures, you'll like this book. .......2007-01-17

It's a great read and has a lot of good information especially if you're a beginner who can't wait to get back on the powder. It also has a lot of tips that people don't usually think about until they're actually on the snow.

      5 out of 5 stars In-depth principles. .......2005-02-16

After a few days in the slopes, I purchased this book along with "The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding" (mostly due to the positive reviews here). After reading both books from cover to cover, it is my conclusion that "Snowboarding Skills" is, without a doubt, a better book.

It seems that most snowboarding books either describe techniques through indirect principles or abstract concepts such as "... turn your upper body into the new direction" (Illus. Guide). Few books went into the *absolutely* essential details of how and why a board turns. Hands down, the pivoting exercise in the "Snowboarding Skills" book is far more helpful to my snowboarding that the entire 312 pages of the Illustrated Guide. Now that I know how to turn a snowboard, the pictures of actual snowboarders with annotated "force vectors" tell me exactly *how* to implement a move -- the art is in the detail.

This is not to say that the "Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding" is a bad book. It just covers a bit more than "Snowboarding Skills" and goes into a little less technical detail. I use it as more of a secondary reference. For beginner to intermediate, this book is an absolute must.

4 out of 5 stars good for beginners.......2004-10-02

I first read this book after my first 5 days on a snowboard, and like many other reviews of snowboarding books have stated there is no substitute for being on the mountain and/or getting a few lessons. Having said that everyone has different ways of explaining concepts, and this book helped to reinforce some of the basics for me like keeping weight forward. After having read this book I had a few principles in the back of my head the next time I went boarding . another good feature is the authors use of other snowboarders to explain key concepts discussed in the book. Also the photos used where excellent better than the diagrams and pics in some other books i have seen.

In summary for a beginner snowboard there is sure to be something useful in this book.

5 out of 5 stars New Rules .......2006-06-09

This was probably one of the best books I've ever read. The way the writer had the character going through all the problems that we as teenagers have to deal with every day is really awesome. As Max transitions from the uptight person he is in the beginning of the book to the laid back sort of party guy he is near the end, it all makes perfect sense and its not like in your face about it.

5 out of 5 stars You WILL like this book!.......2006-03-28

"The New Rules of High School" was a very good book. You really get into Max, the main character's, life. I started to care as soon as he broke up with his girlfriend in the first chapter. I was immediately thinking `what is he DOing' and then `oh god, what a mistake' right along with Max... He's sort of finding his crazier less goody-two-shoes self while still devoting an ever decreasing amount of time to editing the school newspaper. This is definitely a book for both genders, told by a guy but still totally appealing to girls (I'm a girl). So, basically, no matter who you are, you WILL like "The New Rules of High School"!

3 out of 5 stars Ive read better.......2005-06-26

This book was an okay book. It was a light reading book. Great storyline, characters, etc., but I have read better. It is a nice YA book; however, there wasnt anything in there for me to take with me in life, or there wasnt anything so catchy that I will never forget.

        4 out of 5 stars Great Coming-of-Age Story!.......2004-09-22

The New Rules of High School is an excellent read! The characters and events keep your attention and keep you wanting more. Although not all teens will be able to relate to Max Caldwell's "perfect" life, they will be able to relate to the challenges he experiences. I really could not put this book down; I kept wondering how Max would end up. I enjoyed the epilougue that told us about Max a few years later. A truely enjoyable book!

5 out of 5 stars Great read for teens, young people, or just about anyone.......2004-06-16

I absolutely loved "The New Rules of High School." The wide variety of characters, with contrasting, but unique and very real and developed personalities made this book a must read. The plot is somewhat simple, but so very compelling. This book follows the main character,Max through his senior year of high school. During this he struggles to define himself as an individual after his breakup with a longtime girlfriend. The story of Max is very believable and readers will be able to easily connect with one or more of the characters in the book. Max's struggles throughout the story seem common and are very real. This story is a real page turner and you will not be able to put it down until you have finished it. I loved this book and can not to read more works by this author.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Plain Relatable English for Teens.......2005-12-14

This is a super empowering insightful read for teen girls as well as their parents. If you are having trouble communicating and getting your teen to listen to reason about making good choices and finding the right words in answering questions about tough issues during their teenage years, this book should be a part of any self-respecting teenagers home library collection! The title alone is bound to intrigue your teenager enough to pick it up and read.

        5 out of 5 stars Informed Teen.......2003-01-07

In this book, the author gives the 10 truths to being to in high school. It is basically a self help book, but not only does it tell you how to recuperate from bad situations; it also helps to avoid landing in the same situations again. Through teenagers' quotes and life stories, you can connect better with the information it holds and helps you to understand it.
One of the most important parts of this book is when she talks about changing your environment. A quote from this chapter would be "know what you can change (don't forget about negotiating!) and what you cannot. Apply your energy to what you can change and accept those things you can't."(Page 112). Too many people get caught up in things that are permanent and don't focus their attention on temporary things that could make life bearable.
*I liked the book because it doesn't sugar coat anything and it gives the facts flat out.
        * I would recommend this to teens because it can help us deal with the world and assist us into blossoming into the adults we were meant to be.
        * I would recommend this book to adults because even though it is centered to teens, its lessons can be beneficial to adults also.
        * I wouldn't recommend this book to schools because although I like the book, many people would find it time-wasting and boring.

        5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!!!!.......2001-09-12

After reading this book, I learned a lot. By reading this book, you learn how to make right choices, how to react in certain situations etc. The book contains short stories and experiances written by teens. Each chapter has a series of different stories regarding certain topics. Reading this book when you are a teen is very useful, you learn how to handle peer pressure, issues with friends, parents, school, teachers etc. I enjoyed reading this book very much and I reccommend it to early teens because it relates to them more. Overall, I would rate this book a 5, I enjoyed it AND I learnt from it!

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2001-04-18

This book is a wonderful resource and guide for my teens. They have read it and love it. I highly recommend it to those of you with children entering or already in high school!
