From the author of Renaissance Swordsmanship comes the most comprehensive and historically accurate view ever of the lost fighting arts of Medieval knights, warriors and men-at-arms. Based on years of extensive training and research in the use of European swords, it contains highly effective fighting techniques for the sword, sword & shield, long-sword, great-sword, pole-arm and more. And with more than 200 illustrations and rare historical documents, it is a scholarly reference as well as a hands-on training guide for martial artists of all levels.
Customer Reviews:
Pay attention to the details!!.......2007-10-18
A give 3 stars because of the appreciable effort. But...
This is a book only for beginners!!!
And, beginners too, have to pay attention to important basic details:
for esample, to parry with the flat?? Sure?? The heater shield used on the ground, instead mounting?? I didn't see any iconography illustrating footmen with that kind of shield!!
I like to think Clements is a really good instructor, but I (personally) disagree with some of his conclusion and simplification.
However, I recommend this book, with its limitations: a good work.
Good, but..........2007-10-05
If the author spent less time complaining about how certain organizations re-create medieval sword play using rattan sticks, the book would be half as thick.
While he doesn't say, SCA, it's obvious that they are one of the organizations he doesn't care for.
Don't get me wrong, once you get past his vitriolic commentary regarding anyone who recreates sword play differently than he does, his book is excellent. About half of the book is a modernized, repackaged presentation of various historical resources. And that part, he does quite well.
Yes, he is correct, rattan swords do not have the same dynamics as even a wooden practice sword that's shaped like the steel blade, he neglects to tell you *why* various groups choose to use such things in full-speed combat scenarios. He also doesn't quit complaining about the topic...chapter after chapter touches back on his dislike.
Personally, I think that he should re-edit the book, mention his criticisms once, and focus on the technique he so plainly knows.
May jeapordize your chances for sex with normal girls..........2007-09-11
This is a great book to dork out to and *almost* an excellent writers resource, but some of the techniques espoused seem to be taken verbatim from source material without much thought given to the realities of combat.
Alternately this book doubles as a great source for sideways glances and "D&D" jokes from girls who have no interest in this sort of thing.
Great book for a beginner.......2007-01-16
This is a book that I can definitely recommend for a beginner as a nice overview of the topic. It touches on the mechanics of swordfighting and examines tactics against like and unlike weapons. The author is clearly not simply an academic, but someone who understands swordfighting.
Back when it was written, this book was just about the only one on the topic worth reading. Since then, research in this area has uncovered a lot of new information. The author has released addendums to this book that correct some mistakes, but I would like to see the book revised at some point to reflect these corrections.
One last point: In these reviews you will see some fair and balanced reviews, and some that are just oozing malice. The WMA (Western Martial Arts) community is extremely political and home to a lot of amateurs who think they know what they are talking about (and even worse are the self-proclaimed "professionals" touting their own schools and books). Consequently, the Internet is rife with people who either dislike John Clements personally or have their own agendas. The occasional 1-star reviews of this book reflect this sad fact.
While the book is slightly dated and far from perfect, it is better than most of what you will find out there.
A bit oversold, missing some info.......2006-08-04
This book is a great survey of German Style school of fencing techniques, and provides quite a bit of detail on the sword itself, including how to select one, etc. While sold as a book that covers the complete German school of fencing, it does appear to lack polearm combat, which is blatantly advertised as encompassed by the text. Irrespective of this, the techniques are quite well illustrated, and this would make a nice supplement to an authentic German school of fencing study. As always, however, to make full use of this material, you would really need to be enrolled in a medieval swordsmanship course and, while we have them in Prague, Budapest and most cities of Germany, I'm not sure how much access you folks in the USA will have. As such, it's likely to be an informative novelty sitting on your bookshelf til then.

This myth-busting book showcases a select range of short and long trails. Included are hikes where you can find waterfalls, springs, snow, subalpine mountaintops, boreal forests, and watrous canyons. Take the Bright Angel and Rim Trails down the Grand Canyon; visit Native American ruins; hike to summits with jaw-dropping views. And you'll find the desert trails are hardly "barren"-they're alive with saguaro and organ pipe cactus. You can leave inner-city Phoenix and Tucson for hiking treasures you'll find nowhere else. 50 black & white photos, 50 maps, index.

Historical Romance
Ireland, January 1845
Muireann Graham Caldwell and Augustine, her husband of two weeks, are
on a journey to Barnakilla, his estate in northwest Ireland. However,
Augustine goes no farther than a Dublin grave, after putting a gun to his head
and pulling the trigger. After living with constant criticism from her
mother and sister for not being a proper lady, and defying her strict father
by learning all sorts of masculine things, Muireann Graham Caldwell is not
about to run home to Scotland now. With the help of Lochlainn Roche,
Barnakilla's estate manager, Muireann is determined to travel on to her
new home.
When Lochlainn met the ship carrying the newlyweds, he was taken by the
ethereal beauty of Augustine's wife, but the next months prove the lady
possesses strength...and a will of iron...that belie her fragile looks.
She needs that toughness, for her "wealthy" husband bankrupted a once
prosperous estate in the three years since he inherited, and he'd
already gambled away the thousands of pounds from Muireann's father.
The last few years have been hard ones, and the hundred tenants who
depend on Barnakilla are in arrears with their rents and have no means to pay
in the foreseeable future. Muireann always wanted adventure; she's wanted
to prove to herself and her family that she's capable of more than tea
parties and dancing. Here is her chance.
CALL HOME THE HEART is very much Muireann's story. She has an almost
impossible task ahead of her -- already the portents hint at the
disastrous potato famine to come -- but she rallies and leads the people in
rebuilding Barnakilla. Lochlainn grew up on the land, and he's there to help her,
but she's the dynamic one. He's an interesting character, who was betrayed
in the past and loath to risk his heart again. He's torn between wanting
to be Muireann's partner, and believing he's not good enough for her.
The tenants and landed neighbors play important roles in CALL HOME THE
HEART, for they add warmth on the one hand and conflict on the other.
While the relationship between Muireann and Lochlainn waxes and wanes, the
plot revolving around the fight to feed the people and save the estate takes
off at a run and turns CALL HOME THE HEART into an all-nighter. And a
nail-biter.
CALL HOME THE HEART is a moving and passionate novel fans of history
and romance will enjoy.

Romantic Times Review.......2004-12-02
Widowed by a shooting accident on her honeymoon, Muireann Caldwell discovers that her wastrel husband has left her penniless, and almost homeless. She now faces returning to a smothering family or charting her own course with the crumbling Caldwell estate.
Deciding to tackle Barnakilla and its mountain of debt, Muireann turns to the handsome, capable Lochlainn Roche, her late husbands estate manager, for support.
Lochlainn worries that with Augustine dead, his lifelong home will be forfeitedespecially if the young widow decides to run home to Scotland. But hes surprised by the strength Muireann displays and grows to admire her courage and determination. She grows to love Barnakilla as much as he does. Dare he hope she returns the love he has found for her?
Ms. MacMurrough weaves a wonderful tale of survival and love that defeats seemingly insurmountable odds. It is refreshing to see a heroine with such strength and common sense, and a strong hero who actually believes she can have it! CALL HOME THE HEART is a story you wont want to put down.

engaging historical romance .......2004-11-14
In the early 1840s in Ireland, Lochlan loves his home Barnakilla but fears that he will have to confront the abusive owner Augustine Caldwell eventually though he knows altercation means losing. However, his anticipated quarrel will wait as Augustine has left on his honeymoon in Dublin with his new wife Muirecann. Lochlan prays that Muirecann somehow mellows her spouse into caring more for the well-being of his tenants, but expects she will end up another abused victim. Instead, Augustine commits suicide leaving a stunned Muirecann to return home in scandal.
Muirecann tries to do the right thing with the people working the land though she has pressure from Augustine's family who question why he took his life when he seemed to have everything to live for. Needing an ally, she turns to Lochlan for help as they share a love for the land. As the potato famine spreads, Lochlan and Muirecann fall in love, but now he falls under suspicion of killing Augustine as he has several publicly known motives.
This is an engaging historical romance with a touch of a who-done-it that emphasizes the setting during a period when people are in trouble. Shannon Farrell provides a powerful picture of a not so enchanted Ireland that in spite of the food shortage still paints quite a magical land especially seen through the hero's eyes. Readers will agree the lead couple belongs together although the odds of achieving that seem astronomical; in spite of their solid believable duet and a strong supportive cast inside a deep historical, 1840s Eire is the soul of CALL HOME THE HEART.

Entertaining romance - action packed........2007-08-24
This romance had every thing: abduction, rape, miscarriage, sea voyages, forced prostitution, treason, spying and a happy ending. This was, on the whole, a fast moving, enjoyable read.
But the heroine was too saintly, she forgave all who trespassed against her (and they were legion),she was a little too ready to turn the other cheek. I kept waiting for her too show some anger at the false friends who had engineered her downfall.
Her relationship with her abducting rapist of a false husband was beyond this reader's belief. The author would have us accept that at heart he was an honorable man, for a spy. Huh?
The hero was more realistic, he had to overcome his bitterness and feelings of betrayal before he was reconciled with his "one true love".
Not a bad little romance with the lovers separated by an unsympathetic parent. One lover is abducted and sent to Colonial America. The other Lover is misled by stories of his Love's infidelity and clandestine elopement with an Irish rogue. Eventually, the heroine makes her way back to England to try and resume the life and love that was stolen from her.
