Book Description

Rich with humor and natural history, this memoir describes 25 summers of back-to-the-earth adventure as author William L. Sullivan and his wife Janell build a log cabin by hand along a roadless river deep in the wilds of Oregon's Coast Range. Along the way they confront beaver in the refrigerator, raise a family, and puzzle out a murder mystery that had haunted their homestead site. Cabin Fever takes readers to a warm world of kerosene lamplight, wood stoves, and ghost stories that may be true.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!.......2006-09-12

Bill Sullivan is an excellent writer and he is willing to share his family life in the cabin. This book will keep you reading. To find out what he has done with the cabin and who coming to visits in the woods. I've read all of his other books and they are outstanding.
I highly recommended his "cabin fever" book if you are an adventure and enjoy the outdoor life.

5 out of 5 stars Well done.......2006-07-24

There are 2 types of people in the world: those who love the idea of living in a log cabin and those who don't. If you belong to the prior group, you'll love this book.

This book is loosely comparable to "One Man's Wilderness", a story about a man who builds a cabin in the wilds of Alaska and lives in solitude. I found this book to be much more interesting. I guess that's the difference between non-fiction and creative non-fiction?

At any rate, if you read this review Mr. Sullivan...kudos!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful story.......2006-01-13

This is a wonderful book. It's well-written and keeps your attention throughout. You get to know the people, and to care what happens to them.

The focus is less on the hands-on pioneering, although that aspect is fascinating and enlightening, and more on the pioneering spirit. It's nice to know that the spirit is still alive.

5 out of 5 stars Cabin Fever.......2004-04-24

As someone who has grown up romanticizing the log cabin life, I absolutely loved this modern cabin story. It's typical Bill Sullivan - funny, historically informative, easy to read, and entertaining. Anyone who is a fan of Bill's will enjoy learning more about his family. Anyone who is new to Bill's work will want to read more after reading this book.

Book Description

Mary Jo and Stew Churchwell fled Southern California to get away from the rat race. They couldn't get much farther away than a cabin on a tiny stream called Sawmill Creek, high in the Idaho Rockies, where the only rats in the race are the wood rats. Sawmill Creek is a place where hard work, a strong stomach and a sense of humor are prerequisites for survival. This is required reading for those who dream of dropping out to "live off the land."

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars This is not a western Walden.......2001-06-21

I had mixed emotions over this book. Mary Jo gives great details of how they manage to live off the land in Idaho for only $2500 per year income and as a person always looking to simplify my life and live below my means, I found this helpful and the reason for the 2 stars. This book also gives great descriptions of rural Idaho, as well as an account of building a home with no outside help. She breaks down costs and gives details. However, I came away from reading the book disliking Mary Jo and her husband Stew a lot! She says goodbye to her children and family to take up with a man she has known for only a few months for this dream of a modern day Walden. He kidnapps his own children and ends up in jail for custodial interference. The irresponsibility and self-centeredness that these 2 show is unbelievable and what is more unbelievable, she writes as if she is proud of it. If you can get past the personality, there is some good information.

4 out of 5 stars Camping with the Corp of Engineers.......2007-05-14

It was in good shape when it arrived and it looks like it will be very helpful as we tour America this coming camping season.

4 out of 5 stars Camping with the Army Corps of Engineers.......2006-08-01

A unique feature of this small book is its tight list of Army Corps of Engineer Campsites that are not found in many other directories or guidebooks. This guide will tell you if the campsite is located near a big city like Atlanta or in a rural area. Organized by state, maps of your destination area are a helpful adjunct. As the name implies, most facilities are located near a body of water. Some tend to be more family oriented, others are described as hideaways--peaceful locations where you can commune with nature. The book provides good directions from major highways and clear information about the campsites. (Most list amenities, such as electric, water and dump stations.) This is a useful tool to have with you on any trip. Coming upon one of these sites can be a wonderful diversion. D. Brandley

4 out of 5 stars Camping resourse.......2006-02-24

As a retired Corps of Engineer officer and a new RVer, I found this book interesting and helpful in planning for trips.

We have not camped at one of the Corps sites yet, but have visited a couple recently and found the book to accurately describe the ones we have visited.

4 out of 5 stars Great for RVers.......2005-11-21

This book is a "must have" for RVers and campers. I can't think of any other source that has all this information in one place, and easy to find.

4 out of 5 stars Great data ..........2005-08-02

Here's a book that would have made a great spreadsheet. There's a lot of data here, displayed via a string of pictographs. Text in this book serves to provide directions only.

I would have rated this higher if it provided a little background on the location, the history, geographic features, etc.

On a two-week pilgrimage to South Africa from Rockville, Maryland, 16-year-old Berry and her estranged father attempt to come to terms with the murder, a year earlier, of Berry's sister Laura when she was volunteering at a Capetown school. Angry, sour, and ferociously cynical, Berry struggles with the concept of "truth and reconciliation," both for South Africa and in her personal life. Her father's efforts to educate his daughter about the country's political climate in the wake of apartheid are met with cold resistance: "He makes whatever is inside me catch fire. I hate everything. And I feel ashamed, which, for all I know, is why my father brought me here--Mr. Expense Account himself..." The delicious oblivion she finds underwater when doing laps on the swim team back home--or kissing her boyfriend Josh--or in the comforting stones she likes to pile on her chest when she's in her room don't seem to help her move beyond her despair and anger.

Carolyn Coman, author of the highly acclaimed and powerful Bee and Jacky, What Jamie Saw, and Tell Me Everything, seems to have direct access to the souls of troubled teens, plumbing the not-always-pretty depths of her characters. But the current-events lessons and the soul-searching of Many Stones don't redeem the novel from its heavy, depressing tone that emanates from Berry's troubled teen self. While the landscape of Berry's psyche is deftly captured, her surly stance is tiresome and relentless, not letting up until the very last pages when she has "the big meltdown" with her father, and then finally finds her voice at her sister's memorial service. (Ages 13 and older) --Emilie Coulter

        Book Description

Berry Morgan's older sister Laura was the one who got along best with their father, even after he moved out. Their interest in world events and action kept Berry on the outside. After college, Laura decided to work as a school volunteer in Capetown, South Africa-and, in a nightmare straight from the headlines, was brutally murdered. A year and a half later, Mr. Morgan arranges a trip to South Africa, so they can attend Laura's memorial service. It is a trip that, if they let it, will transform the two of them, and may break the long silence of grief so that Berry and her father can finally begin to talk with each other.

"In plain words, as hard as stones, this small, riveting book connects the anguish in one family with the struggle of a country to come to terms with its savage past." (Booklist, starred review)

        Customer Reviews:

        2 out of 5 stars Stilted Writing.......2007-07-01

Berry's older sister Laura wanted to make a difference in the world, to do something good for those less fortunate than she was. So she went to South Africa to teach and give of herself to those who needed her help. While there, she was murdered by a mugger. Berry and her parents never really got over it.

Now, almost two years later, there is going to be a memorial service for Laura and a monument to her will be unveiled in South Africa. Berry's mother can't make herself go to it. Ever since Laura's death it's like she's been missing a piece of herself. So Berry's father arranges to take her with him, to have a father-daughter bonding trip.

Berry is not happy about the arrangement. She and her father were never close, especially after her parents got divorced. Laura was obviously his favorite, the one who was smart and knowledgeable about politics. Berry was the disappointment. She feels like now she is even more of a disappointment, and is not eager to spend so much time alone with her father. Will their trip together help them to grow closer, or will it make even clearer to them their distance?

The family dynamic in this story was interesting. It was sad to see the ways Berry's family reacted to the death of her sister, but it seemed like they all reacted in realistic ways. I liked the details about life in Africa, from the people to the landscape to the tourist spots Berry and her father visited.

I didn't like the writing in this book. The narrative was stilted; I didn't feel like Berry was really giving her actual feelings. It seemed wooden and passionless to me.

3 out of 5 stars Many Stones .......2006-02-03

To be honest, I wasn't exactly thrilled with this book. I think that it lacked something very important: a good plot. This book just starts, and goes smoothly throughout the rest of the book. I didn't ever find myself wondering what was going to happen next or unable to put the book down.
But still, this book my lack a good plot but it doesn't lack a character change. The main character has a very poor outlook on the world, and on a trip to South Africa to attend a memorial service for her dead sister, she finds her grief deep inside her.
A short read, and if you just want to sit down with a book I would say go for it.

4 out of 5 stars an enthralling novel.......2004-06-05

in need of a subject for a book report, i came across this book while searching through my school library. little did i know the depth this book possessed. the author, carolyn coman, has an amazing ability to create rich characters that are extremely realistic. berry's struggles and changing attitudes toward her life make for a very interesting read. the novel is almost depressing in a way. while berry has to learn to live with her tragedy, the reader does as well, and its very easy to dive deep into this novel. it's rather short, and probably could have been longer, but power isnt always judged by size.

3 out of 5 stars Quick but not Light Read.......2003-12-12

Many Stones by Carolyn Coman is a story about a teenage girl, Berry, who travels to South Africa with her estranged father to attend a memorial for her brutally slain sister. Just describing the plot makes for a long sentence yet somehow the book comes in at a slim 158 pages. This is my main criticism of the novel. It's hard to get into such a deep story about family tragedy so quickly. The reader kind of jumps right into the troubled lives of Berry and her family with little back story until a few chapters in.

Short as it may be, the book stll has several touching moments and may very well be a welcome change for someone looking for a quick read but is tired of the fluff that usually entails.

        2 out of 5 stars overrated.......2003-06-21

Berry is one strange cookie. Self-absorbed is an understatement. Why is she so mean to her father? ...

        3 out of 5 stars Over-idealized family life of bi-racial child.......2000-08-11

This was a sentimental story about a little girl's year after her parent's divorce. Showing how both her and her cat grow. It touches only lightly on the bi-racial character of her family background. That family is highly idealized, both grandparents living and with nice homes, all getting along fine.

Unfortunately, I came to this title from the Multi- Racial Activists' page because of specific concern over a bi-racial girl whose life is far from ideal. As a fact her life was filled with betrayal.

The highly idealized nature of the family in this book is not particularly realistic, specifically in the southern States. It doesn't touch on any controversial issues the complicate a bi-racial child's life, therefore is not appropriate for activism. Pamela jean Curry Film Director in Training, Film Studio Faux, Parody

          Book Description

Twelve-year-old Emily Bradford travels back in time to discover a secret about her grandmother's stone house. She also learns how to accept her parents' divorce and change her relationship with her mother. Times are hard for Emily Bradford. Her beloved Grandmother Renfrew has died and her mother can't afford to keep the family's beautiful old stone farmhouse. Emily and her mom, Kate, are driving to the house to help auction off its contents. At the same time, Emily's parents are divorcing and Emily fears her father won't have time for her any more. And her mom's driving her crazy with her obsessively organized and bossy ways. But Emily has a wonderful secret. She's learned to travel into the past--to the time her forebears were building the stone house. She sees her grandmother as a child and becomes friends with her great-uncle Geordie as a boy of twelve. In the past, Emily learns to understand her mother better and discovers a powerful secret contained in the old house-a secret that will help her explore her family's roots in Scotland. And she may even have a way to keep the stone house in the family.

          Book Description

This book provides a gentle introduction to the physics of quantized fields and many-body physics. Based on courses taught at the University of Illinois, it concentrates on the basic conceptual issues that many students find difficult, and emphasizes the physical and visualizable aspects of the subject. While the text is intended for students with a wide range of interests, many of the examples are drawn from condensed matter physics because of the tangible character of such systems. The first part of the book uses the Hamiltonian operator language of traditional quantum mechanics to treat simple field theories and related topics, such as the Klein-Gordon equation, the Dirac equation, quantum electrodynamics, Fermi gases and liquids, and Bose condensates. The Feynman path integral is introduced in the second half where it is seen as an efficient generator Feynman rules and Ward identities, and is indispensable for understanding the connection between renormalization and critical phenomena, as well as non- perturbative phenomena.
