Book Description
Blue Ice relates the tale of the University of Michigan's hockey program--from its fight to become a varsity sport in the 1920s to its 1996 and 1998 NCAA national championships.
This history of the hockey program profiles the personalities who shaped the program--athletic directors, coaches, and players. From Fielding Yost, who made the decision to build the team a rink with artificial ice before the Depression (which ensured hockey would be played during those lean years), to coaches Joseph Barss, who survived World War I and the ghastly Halifax explosion before becoming the program's first coach, to Red Berenson, who struggled to return his alma mater's hockey team to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s. Players from Eddie Kahn, who scored Michigan's first goal in 1923, to Brendan Morrison, who upon winning the 1996 national championship with his goal said, "This is for all the [Michigan] guys who never had a chance to win it."
BlueIce also explores the players' exotic backgrounds, from Calumet in the Upper Peninsula to Minnesota's Iron Range to Regina, Saskatchewan; how coach Vic Heygliger launched the NCAA tournament at the glamorous Broadmoor Hotel; and how commissioner Bill Beagan transformed the country's premier hockey conference.
In Blue Ice, fans of hockey will learn the stories behind the curse of the Boston University Terriers, the hockey team's use of the winged helmet, and the unlikely success of Ann Arbor's home-grown talent.
Unlike other sports at the collegiate level, the hockey players at Michigan haven't been motivated by fame or fortune; rather, they came to Michigan get an education and to play the game they loved.
John U. Bacon has won numerous national writing awards and now freelances for Sports Illustrated, Time, ESPN Magazine, and the New York Times, among others.
Customer Reviews:
Not feeling "Blue" about this book!.......2004-08-20
"Blue Ice" is not only a story about "Michigan Hockey" its a story about how college hockey has evolved to become a mainstream player development system for the National Hockey League, evidence the vast number of former NCAA Division l College Hockey players currently on NHL rosters. Neither is "Blue Ice" a book of hockey statistics; rather its pages uniquely reveal the metamorphosis of NCAA College Hockey, from its cocoon, to the exciting on-ice beautiful spectacle it has become."
About more than just the game..........2004-08-10
An easy read, that's about much more then just the game of hockey. This book delves into the tradition and character of Michigan and it's hockey program. Blue Ice is a must read for anyone interested in Michigan athletics, is familiar with the Ann Arbor hockey community, or just loves the game of hockey.
Very Enjoyable.......2004-07-10
Blue ice is an impressive book that will be enjoyed by anyone interested in collegiate-level athletics, particularly ice hockey. Bacon is a gifted writer with the ability to interweave historical facts and objective (always informative and often funny) stories that keep the reader entertained. It is a great buy for folks that love factually based stories.
Great reading.......2004-07-09
A must-read for hockey lovers! Whether you like Michigan Hockey or any other team, this book is for you. Bacon makes this history story of the Wolverine skaters extremely fun and joyous reading. If you are a Michigan fan, you'd enjoy reading all the details and stories; if you (so wrongly) chose another team to cheer -- you'll become curious as to its own history.
I especially loved the parts of the book (which I consider as "Hockey chanting for Idiots") detailing the rich content and background behind some of what you hear in Yost Ice arena. After reading it, watching the games was so much more fun!
Connections on Ice.......2004-07-09
The idea is simple. Write an engaging story recounting the coming of age of a first class collegiate hockey program and spice it with behind the scene details, locker room interviews and humorous anecdotes. The execution is outstanding. Blue Ice takes the reader on a very enjoyable trip looking at the beginnings of college hockey at the University of Michigan, from playing outdoors on the frozen Huron River, to the recent trips that Wolverine skaters have made to the Frozen Four championships. The bonus for readers is getting a sports version of "Connections," with the athletic stories enveloped and intertwined in the history of the time, showing how seemingly unrelated events can influence each other. Easy and entertaining to read, delightful to give as a gift, when it was over, we wanted a sequel.

Customer Reviews:
best I've read.......2007-08-30
My wife and I spent four years living on our sailboat (55ft) voyaging from Calif. to the east coast and read every book I could find on heavy weather sailing. About half-way through I came across Pardey's book. I think it's far and away the best volume out there on the subject. Even if you pass on the parachute angle and just plan on heaving-to in a tough situation. Should be in every crusing boat's library, and read and implemented by the skipper.
Heaving to techniques from cover to cover.......2007-04-10
After reading this book you will know a lot of theory about when and how to heave to. Diagrams and well-written explanations describe methods and techniques of survival during a storm at sea. Also consider "Heavy Weather Sailing" (revised edition) as an excellent source of information on storm tactics and heavy weather sailing. It describes the yacht's stability in more detail.
MAKE SURE MAKE SHORE.......2007-03-09
this book goes a long way towards removing myth from the idea of what to do in a storm. running before the wind as a solution is revealed as a jackass stunt that only too late does the jackass discover he hadn't thought this out. not reducing sail early seems to be the gateway drug to this catastrophe waiting to happen. lots of boats weather gale conditions without crew. sailors get through a storm by luck and put it down to their skill as sailors. when i was in the demolition business we would sit around after work and get drunk and tell stories of getting hurt. complete with the proud display of scars received and fingers missing. I would partner with the guy, like myself, with no parts missing. always embedded in the story was, the mistake made, the warning ignored, the common practices disregarded or misguided. i think sailors are victims of this also. the recent tragedies off the Calif. coast point out the need to be prudent. give your self permission to think differently. "running before a storm" should be called what it is "running with a storm". the sailing community owes a great deal to the Pardies already but this book if not dismissed as the "global warming" of sailing will save lives and boats. read it, test it, spread the word. ed
It was good, but...........2007-02-16
I just could not warm up to the story. It seemed to drag out much longer than it should. The parts that were good were very good, but there was a lot of dead space between those. It is a good read, but not a top shelf book.
a clear discussion.......2006-12-04
In this small book, the Pardeys describe methods of enduring difficult sea states. While it may not be completely relevant to this review, I have noticed on Internet chat sites that some people seem to think that this book (and, I suppose, the companion video), are rather slender in content. I think perhaps such people miss the point. What this book does in some detail is describe ways to heave-to -- with and (mostly) without a para sea anchor. I suspect that the people who dismiss this book are the sorts of novice sailors who think that safety is something that can be bought, a piece of gear, rather than being a product of learned and practiced seamanship. This book is about learning and practicing a particular set of storm seamanship skills which are peculiarly suited to the sort of Mom and Pop crewed boats so prevalent in todays' cruising fleets. Really a nicely done little book.

Not recommended.......2003-03-03
This book gives the basics on where to stay, where to eat and how to get from point A to point B. The background information on the ancient sites is sparse. For better archeological info (out of a guide book) I'd recommend Mathew Teller's "Jordan-The Rough Guide" over this book. It provides more info on Petra and other ancient sites in Jordan, and focuses all its energies on Jordan alone.
Damien Simonis is one of the authors of this LP edition, and I love his other books, so I don't think the reason this book isn't a good choice has to do with the authors... it is simply because it is a small book dedicating itself to two countries... In fact, the Jordan chapter in this book is simply excerpts from the more thorough LP guide, "Jordan". So if you're going to Jordan and Syria, I'd recommend getting LP Jordan and LP Syria separately... Remember, the whole point of a guide book is simply to help you get the most out of your trip and time... it doesn't mean you can't wander off and find things on your own once your there!! Only a fool would think that way!
for the ignorant traveler who wants to remain ignorant.......2000-03-25
Yeah, the guide is full of practical information -- the book is after all for people who are afraid of getting lost or discovering anything for themselves -- but when it comes to informing you accurately and knowledgably on archeology, culture and history, it is a real let down. For the cheapest burger in town, buy this guide; but if you want something intelligent and informed, buy a better guidebook.
Full of useful information.......2000-03-06
Some of the world's earliest civilizations thrived in what are now Jordan and Syria, and it is therefore not surprising that hundreds of historical and archaeological sites are to be found in the region. This book offers in-depth coverage of the main sites along with clearly written practical information on everything else travelers need to know about to help them make the most of their visit: historical, cultural, and political notes, a helpful language section, a detailed glossary, maps, photos, and accommodation and restaurant listings. Be sure to read the book before you go, and bring it along with you.
An ideal complement to the above guidebook is Sonia Uvezian's fascinating and highly informative "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen: A Culinary Journey through Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan." This landmark volume should be required reading for anyone who plans to travel to the region or who is simply interested in its history, cooking, and culture.
Tells it like it is.......1998-02-05
In general the Lonely Planet series is by far the best travel quide set that I have ever used. You can discover out of the way places or you can go to the places where everyone goes. For those people who truly want to have an adventure and experience the culture of the people and the country, Lonely Planet is the way to go!

Gives good understanding of relationship choices!.......1998-07-15
This book presents a good understanding about the hidden logic of falling in love. It is a known fact that we feel attracted to partners who (mostly subconscously) remind us of our first love-relationship in life - the one with our parents. The urge to heal old wounds by "getting it right this time" make the chemistry it takes for us to pursue a relationship, even if it brings back the very painful and unhealthy emotions we suffered from in the past! The book also includes several exercises that enable the reader to gain new insights into their own relationhship history and any unconscious patterns associated with it. For anyone interested in finding out why certain people seem to end up in the same unhappy relationship situations over and over again - and at the same time learning something about yourself, this is a highly recommendable book.

Mysterious Things in the Crescent .......2006-12-04
I think that this is one of the best books ever. I think you should buy this book if you like horror books. There were 2 families that moved in to the "crescent". The first family's names were Jenni, Allie, and their dad. The next family's names were April and her parents. Some really mysterious things happen to the Carpeks, the Burtons, the Joslins, and to April and her parents. So if you are ready for a really scary book buy this book. By Nick

The Moonlight Man.......2006-12-04
I rate Moonlight Man a one because I don't think there was enough action in it.Also,I didn't like the setting."I mean a house?Whats up with that"?The characters were ok. I didn't like April. She was very bossy. The rest of the characters were ok. This is why I rated the book 1 star.

Book Description
How can one month change everything?
Catherine Ames's father is a traveler -- he always has been. And except for fleeting visits which always left Catherine yearning for more, her father has always been a mystery to her. So when Mr. Ames suggests a month-long stay at a summer cabin in Nova Scotia for just the two of them, Catherine is thrilled. Finally, she will know her father as the other girls at school know theirs -- his habits, his laugh, and most of all, his wonderful stories.
But their summer of discovery is soon overshadowed by Mr. Ames's unpredictability. He drinks a lot -- more than Catherine imagines other fathers drink. Up close, her fancy-free father seems different -- darker, like the Nova Scotian night sky. As the sun sets on their month together, Catherine struggles against the terrible things she is learning about her father. How can the man she grew up wishing was near seem so far away now? And how can she bring him back to her?

The Moonlight Man.......2004-11-04
The Moonlight Man by Paula Fox is a very good book. I recommend this book for 13 through 15 year olds. Most of the time i would just sit on my couch and just read for hours and if you now me i don't read that often.
It is about this 15 year old girl named Catherine who is going to her dads for the summer. Her dad, Mr. Amos, is not what I would call the best dad in the world. He really dosen't have muck experience being a father cause he has never been there for her. But just read and read to see how she and her dad really bond. At the beginning they do not get along that well or well when he driks that's is. Many wild and crazy things happen sence she only sees her dad a couple oftimes per year ans scence it takes place in Canada she can drive. Most o fhte time she is a designated driver for her dad and his friends.
This is a very good book. I don't think I can tell you any more other wise I would give it all away. It is a very good book I would read it 100 more times if i had to. It's a great book. Those are the reasons I recommend The Moonlight Man by Paula Fox.
