Regulating Bioprospecting: Institutions for Drug Research, Access, And Benefit Sharing
ASIN: 1853836982 |
Book Description
This practical manual demonstrates how to arrive at equitable and successful arrangements over access to, and the commercial development of, genetic resources. Despite much discussion at the international policy level relating to the use of genetic resources and traditional knowledge, to date there has been no such guide on integrating concepts into practice. Many parties have stakes in the commercial use of biodiversity, from local communities and indigenous peoples to resource managers, NGOs, research institutes and universities, industry and national governments.
This guide draws on experience from a range of countries around the world to show how the benefits from the commercial use of biodiversity can be maximized and shared equitably while also achieving local conservation and development objectives. It explains how groups can better design and control the terms of research and business partnerships, and also how to participate in drafting national laws and contributing to international policy debate.
No single model fits all circumstances, and the manual is structured to enable readers to select and apply approaches most relevant to them. It includes extensive information on the codes, contracts, policies and other documents required, as well as extensive contact details. It will be an invaluable tool for all the stakeholders involved in benefit-sharing research and commercial partnerships.

International Public Goods and Transfer of Technology Under a Globalized Intellectual Property Regime
ASIN: 0802039022 |
Book Description
~
In the past, efforts to reconcile the western concept of intellectual property with indigenous knowledge have not taken into account the schism between this knowledge and western scientific forms. As knowledge assumes increasing importance in the quest for self-determination, cultural survival, and economic empowerment, the gulf between indigenous and western scientific knowledge assumes a new meaning. In International Law and Indigenous Knowledge, Chidi Oguamanam argues that the crisis of legitimacy indigenous knowledge poses for the intellectual property system compels a re-thinking of the concept of intellectual property itself.
Drawing on interdisciplinary research,International Law and Indigenous Knowledge takes as its framework the legal doctrinal methodology, focusing on international legal and policy developments regarding the protection of indigenous knowledge. Using traditional medicine and biodiversity to illustrate his thesis, Oguamanam argues that recent international legal and policy developments in the direction of a cross-cultural approach to intellectual property rights are desirable trends. Such developments come closer to addressing the rift between western and non-western knowledge systems as well as the crisis of legitimacy in the conventional intellectual property system.

Book Description
How do we promote global economic development while simultaneously preserving local biological and cultural diversity? This authoritative volume, written by leading biological and social scientists and legal experts from around the world, addresses this question in all of its complexity.
The first part of the book examines biodiversity and examines what are we losing, why we are losing it and what is to be done. The second part addresses biotechnology and looks at whether it is part of the solution or part of the problemâor perhaps both. The third section examines traditional knowledge, explains what it is and how, if at all, should it be protected. The fourth and final part looks at ethnobotany and bioprospecting and offers practical lessons from the vast and diverse experiences of the contributors.
This volume is an indispensable reference for all legal practitioners, regulators and policy makers, scientists and conservationists and professionals in pharmaceutical and agricultural industries.

A comparison of traditional healers' medicinal plant knowledge in the Bolivian Andes and Amazon [An article from: Social Science & Medicine]

Description:
Medicinal plant knowledge of two groups of traditional healers was thoroughly studied during a 2-year ethnobotanical survey in the Bolivian Andes (Quechua farmers from Apillapampa) and Amazon rainforest (Yuracare-Trinitario slash-and-burn cultivators from Isiboro-Secure National Park), respectively. Both areas represent ecologically and culturally diverse zones, differing in floristic diversity, physical accessibility to health care and degree of modernization, the latter evidenced by presence or intensity in use of modern services such as electricity, water distribution, and materials for house construction. It is generally believed that indigenous people have an impressive knowledge of useful plant species and that this knowledge reflects the plant wealth of their living environment. However, the present study shows that healers' knowledge of collected medicinal plants (expressed as percentage of plants known by name and use by the majority of healers) is higher in the Andean area characterised by a long history of anthropogenic activity, than in the biodiversity-rich rainforest (protected since 1965). Therefore, medicinal plant knowledge does not seem to depend on the level of plant diversity, degree of modernization or absence of Western health care infrastructure. Indeed, although Andean healers live in a floristically poorer environment, have adopted more modern services and have easier access to primary health care facilities, they are more knowledgeable about medicinal plants than rainforest healers who live isolated in an environment with considerable floristic/ecological variation and lack of Western health care. It is hypothesised that social factors underlying traditional medical practices (background of extensive family in traditional medicine) play an important role in transmission-and hence survival of knowledge on medicinal plants.

Customer Reviews:
Lead astray.......2007-06-21
Nice photos but inaccurate descriptions. Approaches in Red Rocks are notoriously long, on more than one occasion a route was described as being in full sun or full shade only to discover the opposite was true once at the base. We were quite frustrated with the book's misinformation. Routes were also poorly described. It lead our party to wonder if the author forgot to proofread the manuscript.
Solid climbing guide book.......2007-04-12
I got this book for a trip to Red Rock Canyon in March 2007. It was one of two books brought by our party -- the other was Rock Climbing Red Rocks, 3rd. The books varied slightly on route descriptions (three pitches vs. two longer ones), but as always, the guide books were just a guide and actual conditions led us to make some different decisions on the route. The route ratings were very helpful -- there are tons of routes to climb and with only a short trip, we focused on only the top-rated routes, and we were not disappointed!

Customer Reviews:
Beautifully presented..........2007-01-10
As we have all come to expect from Lonely Planet, this is a very well thought out Travel Journal. My only disappointment is that a company as well known for travel pics as Lonely Planet didn't provide a couple envelope sleeves for photos or postcards picked up along the way!
Disappointing.......2006-08-21
I was very disappointed by this product. The basic idea is great, ie a diary for a special journey. But it leaves much to be desired. Firstly, the plastic cover is peeling off, and the back cover pocket has torn. As for the contents, this is little more than a notebook of mostly blank pages - which makes it very expensive, in my rating. Too many journeys (22!) in the opening Travel Schedule, and there could be a field to jot down the reservation code and the seat numbers. No provision for: packing list (including clothes to be taken), pre-journey checklist, tips for restuarants and hotels, including details of bookings, sights to be seen, addresses of shops, presents to be brought back, finances, useful telephone numbers (hotels, airports, stations, credit cards, tourist information centers, postcards to be sent and much much more.
Great travel journal!!!.......2001-07-12
This is my 2nd purchase, I've used the first journal for my trip to Ireland this past May (2 weeks). I found the book very useful. The fact that it is a spiral notebook allowed me to fold it backward and write in it when there isn't a table around. At the end the trip I ran out of pages, only because I'm very "long winded". It had a lot of useful phone numbers and a small file pocket to put your receipts and tickets. The worldtime converter dial was easy to use, but the world maps were a bit simplistic and should contain more detail. Otherwise, this is a great travel journal.
The Practical Travel Journal.......2001-04-23
Looking for the perfect travel journal is difficult. Non-spiral journals make it difficult to write on when in buses or trains. Large journals just take up too much room. I found a lot of journals have inspirational quotes, which seems redundant- the places I travel to are usually inspiration enough. After looking at many journals I decided I wanted one with tough exterior, and it had to be spiral. Well, Lonely Planet's travel journal went way beyond that. There are sections for itineraries, addresses, travel related web-sites. It has continent maps, airline phone numbers, and other important numbers. There is a pocket in the front to keep loose items until they find their place. A wheel in the back that helps for time changes. Best of all, it has enough space for writing, sketching or anything else. The book is a great addition to my travels.
Don't take a trip without it.......2000-09-26
This handy travel journal is by far the best I have used. It is small enough to take along almost anywhere, and big enough to provide plenty of writing space. The backs of the lined pages are plain, solving the problem of ink bleed through and giving an on-the-spot location for the many items that document your trip; ticket stubs, cards collected from fellow travelers, receipts, and your own sketches.
The maps show enough, but not too much, there are calendars through 2002, a clothing sizing chart, conversions from metric to imperial, a few pages for addresses, and an oh-so-helpful time zone conversion wheel.
All of this is in the spiral bound, lay-flat-when-you-need-it, just-the-right-size journal for your trip.
