Nice, but.......2006-12-29

I received this as a gift and could not wait to get a quiet moment to open this book and escape. I did like the beautiful photos, however found that the author had too many of the same area and could have done so much more. The last pages contained favorite beach areas but did not have any photos which I would of liked. Will go back to the book again someday but not what I was hoping for.

I am a beach lover, and as the DVD producer / cameraman of the "Waves: Virtual Vacations" Series here on Amazon.com, this book has been an inspiration to me. The spectacular shots of beaches from around the world are truly extraordinary. Having shot myself hundreds of the best beaches from California, Hawaii, Florida, the Caribbean both with stills and for the DVDs, I can easily say this book is top notch. I highly recommend it. A Retreat in Itself.......2003-08-21

The is a stunning book. The photos come from diverse parts of the globe and diverse coastal landscapes. At first, I was skeptical of the small-ish size. But the photos are very high quality and beautiful to look at. Maybe someday I'll get around to looking at the text?

The Inner Game of Golf is a great, honest read that that any golfer will be able to understand and apply practically with ease. Tim uses straight forward language, and unlike many other authors, doesn't fill the pages with unnecessary anecdotes about famous players.

It has changed my game, and made me a much more relaxed and composed golfer. Although I'm not a fantastic golfer yet, it has given me direction for improvement and practice, and new enjoyment for the game.

Very highly recommended.

Instruction will only get you so far. Any hack knows that. What most don't know, however, is that you can be your own worst enemy on the course, and for more reasons than one.

At the same time, however, you can be the best thing that has ever happened to your game.

Gallwey's Inner Game series has been around much longer than many realize. Not only that, but his ideas were at least a decade ahead of anything anyone was doing.

Gallwey's approach is simple. He divides a person's mind into two big regions. Self 1 is controling, egocentric, and demanding. Self 2, on the other hand, is non-judgemental, intuitive, and generally focused on whatever it is doing at the time. The problems begin when Self 1 starts getting in Self 2's way, giving it instructions it doesn't need, and locking it into a pattern of failure many are all too familiar with.

The goal, as Gallwey sets it out, is to get Self 1 to step aside during the swing and let Self 2 take total control. This is not easy to do, however, especially since many people have yet to realize the existance of these two selfs to begin with.

Gallwey bases his ideas on his experience in tennis, but appears successful in translating them into golf. He set a goal at the outset of writing the book to break 80 by basically putting only the time the average golfer has into improving his game (practice at home, plus a day or two at the range, and one round a week if possible), that and adhearing to his own methods. Obviously, he succeed, which helps give hope to those looking to try the same path.

Overall Gallwey's ideas are clear, and the writing narrative, which may put some readers off. Still, his exercises should help guide golfers into understanding how their mentalities can affect their play, as well as create barriers to further improvement.

The biggest drawback to Gallwey's theory of a Self 1 and Self 2 are that he seems to assign a bad-guy role to Self 1, while Self 2 is the trodden-upon hero. Whether this sort of duality is the final answer to things is a bit up in the air, and does not appeal to a more holistic approach to the game.

If You Read Nothing Else About Golf, Read This!.......2006-06-27

A timeless classic that helped start the "inner game" revolution - this is the book that points golfers to the other half of the game, the inner aspect of the game. Practical without being hoakey or too metaphysical. One of those book you'll keep on your shelf forever.

Back...stop...hit...stop... Keep Self 1 busy and feel the clubhead........2006-06-24

Proposes, defends, and offers detailed first-hand phenomenological insight into a radical (by Western standards) approach to learning that maintains the master skill of all learning is "relaxed concentration" (p. xiii) coupled with trust in the body's (and mind's) ability to learn. As a sequel to the author's previous work on learning to play tennis, the book provides instruction, examples, and encouragement in becoming receptive to a natural form of learning based on focused attention and non-judgmental awareness. While the approach admittedly can seem somewhat Zen-like to most Westerners, it is consistent with the Socratic learning approach underlying much of classical education.

Oh, and by the way, it WILL reduce your handicap.

After reviewing many online guides and some other small books/maps on San Francisco I had no clear idea of what I wanted to do or where to go. Then I received a copy of Fodors San Fran 2004 and I must say, I have a jam packed super charged itinerary all ready and I feel like I know the city! This book is concise and to the point. I've been to Francisco once before. All the places I wanted to come back to where in this book in full detail explaining things that I never thought of. Not only does my trip seem much more exciting but it has given me confidence in making my trip the way I want it to be.

In a city like San Francisco, the best way to experience it is on foot and city transit. This book brought my attention to many sites that I would have passed over and gives paths to walk through sections of the cities and catch all the best sites along the way. Great advice is to get a pass for MUNI and use it! We moved thought the city freely and saw more in seven days than many others who have visited.

I read this book when I was twelve. It is still my favorite book. And when I read it, I finished it in 2 days! I couldn't put the book down. It is not tons of adventure on every page but it is soo interesting. I felt connected to Jesse. Well, Jesse feels kinda in a rut in a very boring town (Ida). But when roxanne moves in she changes Jesses life. They become best friends even though the big age difference. I think the climax of the book was when Roxanne wanted to touch Frankenstiens hand at the church and she didn't. I thought it was so sad that she sat next to him but never said or did anything. And he never knew. And that she came all the way to Ida and sat next to him and never told him. Very sad. At the end of the book. I wished that it would go on. I wish Martha Moore would make a sequel. Because I want to know if Frankenstien ever found out about his mother.

This is a great book. It shows wonderful examples of joy, pain, love, friendship, and sorrow. Roxanne comes into Jesse's life and they become best friends. Roxanne is kind of the outcast of Ida. With her bubbly personality, giant coat, wild red hair, and Liberty Bell tattoo, people look at her as a definate outcast. Roxanne teaches jesse the magic of life and they bond. This is a wonderful book for all ages. a must!!!
