I am interested in your subject and content. I am Secretary of Society of Environmental Journalists - Nepal(SEJ-Nepal). It is our pleasure to introduce Society of Environmental Journalists-Nepal (SEJ-Nepal) as one of the leading non-governmental organization working for the environmental conservation of the country. Since its establishment in 1993 with a group of journalists and environmentalists, SEJ -Nepal has organized various programs on different burning issues of environment. Generally, SEJ-Nepal is organizing - Training, Interaction, Seminar, Workshop, Talk Program, etc. together with Research and Observation Visit. The delegation teams on behalf of the organization also met the concern personalities and organization to aware and pressurize them to wards the various environmental issues for time to time. Beside these, Society is conducting a huge media campaigning to bring the public awareness through its own TV (every Friday at 8:10 AM in Image Channel) and FM (every Saturday at 5:30 PM in K.A.T.H. 97.9) program called BATABARAN SANCHAR. For your kind information, recently we are going to organize two days national workshop on "SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PROBLEMS OF MUNICIPALITIES & HOSPITALS AND ITS IMPACT ON HEALTH" from September 17-18, 2000 (Aswin 1-2, 2057). This workshop will provide the good floor for the brain storming between the concern organizations, experts like government, municipalities, hospitals, other concern INGOs, NGOs and environmentalists to sort out the major problems on the subject and its solution. So I am interested to gain more information and technical practices around the world for the general and hazardous solid waste management. I found your book more informative, sound and relevant in present context as it helps to know the findings on Solid Waste Management. Hope to share with you more.

These days, more and more people are saying no to "better living through chemistry" and yes to a lifestyle that is less toxic and more environmentally friendly. This trend toward a more natural lifestyle has become something of a crusade for Annie Berthold-Bond, author of Better Basics for the Home. After developing hypersensitivity to even very low concentrations of chemicals, Berthold-Bond was forced to rid her life of as many toxins as possible. "It wasn't until I had to be away from chemicals that I began to realize how many we lived with. The extent of the contamination is startling--from hair spray and floor wax to dandelion killers and plastic shower curtains and other products that line our hardware stores and supermarket shelves."

This book represents the culmination of her search for a more sustainable lifestyle. Taking her cue from an earlier time, Berthold-Bond, former editor in chief of Green Alternatives for Health and Environment, offers more than 800 simple and practical alternatives to common household toxins, covering everything from skin care to gardening. And the good news is that adopting her suggestions and formulas isn't hard at all. "Mixing up face creams or wood stain isn't much different than cleaning the windows with vinegar, soap, and water instead of using Brand Name X, or making a cake with flour, eggs and milk instead of buying a mix," see asserts. "With a few simple staples we can clean our houses, wash our hair, rid the dog's bed of fleas, and do many other things as well." If you have your doubts, here is her formula for metal polish:

3 teaspoons salt, 1 tablespoon flour, and enough white distilled vinegar to make a paste. Scoop the paste onto a clean sponge, and polish the metal clean. Rinse with hot water and buff dry.

Sure, these days it's literally impossible to lead a life that is completely toxin-free. But you can significantly reduce your exposure, and picking up a copy Better Basics for the Home is a great way to get started.

It's amazing all the products you can clean with that are already in your kitchen and, more importantly, not toxic.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-07-26

This is an excellent guide for a less toxic living approach. It provides you with 868 easy to make natural and chemical free formulas for Household Cleaners, Skin & Hair Care, Lawn and Garden Care, Paint, Art Projects and so much more. It's a great resource to have around. I really liked how most of the recipes only call for a couple of ingredients and are really easy to make. And best of all they work too. One of my favorites is the Aloe Vera Moisturizer with Avocado Oil. It's the only Moisturizer I still use for my face and it works great!

Highly recommend this book!

3 out of 5 stars Hard to find items..........2007-06-19

I really enjoyed many of the household cleaning products in this book but when it came to purchasing the products needed for the skin care I found it really disappointing. The websites that are given to purchase products (soap bark, plumeria flower essence, powdered Vit A) cannot be purchased anywhere. There are no suggestions as to what alternatives can be used. I am really frustrated at having to spend hours and hours of research time trying to track down these items.

Thank's for all of the great reviews. Even though I read them I still checked it out at the library first. When it was time to return it, I knew I had to buy it. I love this book!

Book Description

“I wrote and illustrated this book to help every inquisitive birder, from novice to expert. Whether you can identify six birds or six hundred, you’ll be a better birder if you have a grounding in the real nuts and bolts of what birds look like, and your skills will be even sharper if you know exactly what to look for and how to record what you see.” —David Allen Sibley

The Sibley Guide to Birds and The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior are both universally acclaimed as the new standard source of species information. And now David Sibley, America’s premier birder and best-known bird artist, takes a new direction; in Sibley’s Birding Basics he is concerned not so much with species as with the general characteristics that influence the appearance of all birds and thus give us the clues to their identity.
To create this guide, David Sibley thought through all the skills that enable him to identify a bird in the few instants it is visible to him. Now he shares that information, integrating an explanation of the identification process with many painted and drawn images of details (such as a feather) or concepts.

Birding Basics begins by reviewing how one can get started as a birder: the equipment necessary, where and when to go birding, and perhaps most important, the essential things to look for when birds appear in the field. Using many illustrations, David Sibley reviews all the basic concepts of bird identification and then describes the variations (of shape, size, and color) that can change the appearance of a bird over time or in different settings. And he issues a warning about “illusions and other pitfalls”—and advice on avoiding them.

The second part of the book, also plentifully illustrated, deals with another set of clues, the major aspects of avian life that differ from species to species: feathers (color, arrangement, shape, molt), behavior and habitat, and sounds.

This scientifically precise, beautifully illustrated volume distills the essence of David Sibley’s own experience and skills, providing a solid introduction to “naming” the birds. With Sibley as your guide, when you learn how to interpret what the feathers, the anatomical structure, the sounds of a bird tell you—when you know the clues that show you why there’s no such thing as “just a duck”—birding will be more fun, and more meaningful. An essential addition to the Sibley shelf!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use... which is good for me. .......2006-12-21

I'm a novice birder, to say the least. I like Sibley's guides because they are straight forward and easy to navigate. The drawings are all done by Sibley himself, not a team of various artists... believe me, it matters. Birds are shown from various angles, by sex, and at various stages of life. I think any Sibley guide would make a lovely (different) house warming gift along with, perhaps, a bird feeder.
Happy birding!

5 out of 5 stars There's more to birding than found in the standard Field Guide.......2005-10-31

Almost every field guide gives a an introduction to the skills that need to be learned if one wants to develop any proficiency in finding and identifying birds in the field. In this book David takes it a whole lot further and has produced a book that covers all the skills needed and would be a great asset to any birder,be they a novice or a long time seasoned birder. It is not a book to replace the normal field guide but instead is a super addition to hone the skills of any birder, regardless of their skills.I won't try to cover what is in this book as other reviewers have done a fair job of it already.
What this book does is to explain why a bird was found where it was,why it was not something else, why is it such and such when it only remotely resembles the picture in the field guide, how could you tell,it's too dark to see the colors, and on and on.
You will also learn the many subtle differences and field marks to look for ,especially if you want to try to describe a bird to someone else, write it up in your journal or even to help if you listen to and hope to understand some more experienced birder describing a bird you may even be looking at.
One way to show what this book is all about might be to compare it to Baseball or Bridge. The standard books tell you all the rules and finer points of the game;this book tells you how to play the game.
Don't let the fact that this book has only 154 pages and not very expensive fool you.It is very unique and would
be welcomed by any birder who doesn't already have it.
I must say, however, that this is not the type of 'bird book' to buy if you just want to buy one book.It is definately the book to buy to go along with any other Field Guide that covers all the birds in an area;such as National Geographic's Birds of North America,Peterson's Field Guides,American Bird Conservancy's field guide to All the Birds of North America,Kaufman's Birds of North America,Sibley's Guides or any of the other excellent guides available.

5 out of 5 stars The best introduction I've seen.......2004-08-31

This is the best instruction I've ever seen, printed or otherwise, on learning how to bird. It includes not only basic visual identification skills, but also the basics of how to bird by sound. Sibley teaches the feather groups and anatomy, plumage variations, molting patterns, and effects of lighting that make some indentifications so difficult. I would recommend it to any aspiring birder.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent but strikes me as somewhat odd.......2004-04-05

Let me depart a bit from the other glowing reviews to point out something I think is slightly odd about this book. While the book has many outstanding features, I'm not sure it is the ideal "birding basics" book.

The first half of the book has some terrific information but is often light on content (the equipment section, birding by geography section, finding more info section) as well as some glaring gaps (breeding habits, migration patterns, birding history in North America). It's one thing to tell a beginning birder how the gestalt of a White Crowned Sparrow is different from that of a White Throated Sparrow but does the beginning birder even know when to expect either in their area? The ending on ethics and conservation is so small it almost plays to the criticism that birders are more in it for the sport than for birds themselves.

The second half of the book is a stunning review of the external structure of birds. It is better than many ornithology texts in this regard. Everything you could ever need to know about feather structure, molt, proportional differences and color perception is presented along with an excellent introduction to taxonomy and bird song.

Sibley is obviously playing to his strength here which is fine because what he knows, he really knows if you get my point. The art work is great, of course.

I don't want to come across as knocking this book. I own it, enjoy it and have learned a great deal from it. I recommend that you buy it. I'm just not sure it will serve this generation of up and comming birders as the ideal "basics" book the way Jack Connor's "The Complete Birder" did for many in the prior generation.

What do you think of a basics book that can take the time to touch on a birds nasal bristles or gestalt but omit a basic discussion on migration or breeding? Maybe it's me but it strikes me as a bit odd. I think the second half could have been published as part of a book called "Sibley's Ornithology for Birders" or something to that effect.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to nany aspects of birding.......2003-02-24

I came into this book with some interest in learning to identify birds around the yard to a greater extent. This is the first book that I've seen to go beyond the basics of shape and color. It's actually a virtual biology lesson on birds with fine details about feathers, and molting among other topics. Very detailed materials that help the reader understand how to see the parts of the bird beyond quick impressions in order to make identifications. But I also gained a new insight into an animal that I took for granted just seeing every day. Sibley is an incredible artist and liberally demonstrates his concepts with sketches and drawings of a wide variety of birds. The combination of beautiful art, and clear, educational writing makes one of the best introductions I've ever seen to birds, and how to know and appreciate them. Highly recommended for the casual as well as serious bird enthusiast.

Book Description

Offers expert instruction and in-the-field advice for the novice and experienced tracker

Tracking wildlife successfully requires more than just looking for trails and scat. It requires an awareness of how an animal behaves in its environment--how it finds food, travels, and rests. A tracker must know how to find and interpret behavioral clues animals leave behind. This how-to book teaches the basics of being a successful tracker--explaining what to look for to find or identify an animal and how to develop an essential environmental awareness. Also describes aging tracks and sign, understanding ecology and mapping, keeping field notes, using track tools, and making casts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Great Tool for Understanding the Basics.......2007-04-06

"Animal Tracking Basics" is probably one of the most important books I have read when it comes to learning tracking and nature awareness. It's jam packed with exercises, instructions to fun games to play, and amazing illustrations that will help you learn more about, and deepen your relationship with, the living community around you. And most importantly Jon Young and Tiffany Morgan and many other experienced trackers and naturalists share their experiences and wisdom through interesting and easy-to-understand stories.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who has a desire to experience the art of tracking and nature awareness. This book is a tool to aid you in those timeless experiences. It belongs on any naturalist's bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Great approach to Animal Tracking.......2007-03-20

If you want to learn how to find animal tracks, to follow those tracks to the live animal, and refine the ability to scout up to the animal and touch it, then Jon Young is the person that you want to meet.
Jon Young teaches tracking and nature awareness using both the naturalist and spiritual applications. I have found his approach and methods to animal tracking much easier to learn than having to stare at a single track for hours at a time.
Jon Young incorporates the "big picture" as he teaches tracking using the landscape to assist with finding animal runs and beds. His storytelling ability is unmatched and has an incredible way of bringing in the mystery and excitement of discovery.
This book should be a starting point for anyone on the learning path to be a master tracker.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Uneven material.......2006-11-28

This book provides a fair introduction to geology with fairly clear diagrams and introduction to basics such as geological time scale and plate tectonics. The book tries to emphasize the practical side of geology: what can be seen and picked up. The introduction to common minerals was perhaps not as practical as I'd hoped, for some of the minerals without picture and just a description of chemical structure, hardness, and gravity I could not identify them. The information level was uneven: "a backpack full of rocks can be heavy" to arcane (The chemical reaction with feldspar to produce clay minerals). The section on different rock types was well done, but the section of mapping didn't seem practical (I couldn't really map a bed of coal). I think this book might be best if used with a very local or state geology guide.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put The Book Down!Great Book!.......2005-10-13

Dougal Dixon has written a wonderful book with detailed
discriptions suited for both the beginner and those already into Geology. This book is a perfect learning tool for all ages.
Perfect for education as well as recreational activilties.
I highly recommmend this intellegent, entertaining and well
written book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for the Beginning Geologist.......2004-08-07

This is a wonderful book for the beginning geologist or anyone interested in earth sciences. It presents the fundamental concepts of geology in a way that is accessible to the non-specialist, but without being oversimplified or condescending. It's full of lots of great pictures, and the best part of the book is the section where it tells you how to collect and label specimens of rock yourself. People of any age interested in science, especially go out and get grubby do it yourself science, will find this book an excellent addition to their libraries.

5 out of 5 stars Nice book for the beginner.......2000-07-05

I have the habit of buying anything with geology, paleontology, history, etc. in the title, sometimes without thought to where I'm at with my knowledge base. This was one of those times! The book is a lovely, well illustrated, practical guide to geology for the beginner. Much of what the authors dedicate a single paragraph or page to I have had whole courses in already, so needless to say, I was not quite as enthused over the material as a new comer to the field might be. Certainly for the beginner, especially the Junior High natural science enthusiast, this would be a wonderful gift. It might even make a good text for a high school natual science course, as it covers considerable information on the earth sciences. I plan on giving my copy to a close friend with children interested in these subjects.

5 out of 5 stars Great book. Good for beginners........1999-05-16

Today we were at 12000 feet looking into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and we decided we needed a book. Any book. A good book. A book that keeps you reading. The Practical Geologist was just the book! We read all night, and the night's not over yet! We learned about geology, and also came a little closer to God. I highly recommend it! p.s. Book Description

FROM THE PREFACE In the years since the first edition, I have continued to consider ways in which the texts could be improved. In this regard, I researched several topics including how people learn (learning styles, etc.), how the brain functions in storing and retrieving information, and the fundamentals of memory systems. Many of the changes incorporated in this second edition are a result of this research. The changes were field-tested during a three-year period in which I taught a water and wastewater mathematics course for Palomar Community College, San Marcos, California. · All the fundamental math concepts and skills needed for daily water/wastewater treatment plant operations. This first volume, "Basic Math Concepts for Water and Wastewater Plant Operators," provides a thorough review of the necessary mathematical concepts and skills encountered in the daily operations of a water and wastewater treatment plant. Each chapter begins with a skills check to allow the student to determine whether or not a review of the topic is needed. Practice problems illustrate the concepts presented in each section.

5 out of 5 stars By two expert and licensed wildlife rehabilitators.......2004-01-13

Now in its third and updated edition, Wildlife Care For Birds And Mammals is a straightforward, how-to manual to care for and assist injured wild animals, written and presented by two expert and licensed wildlife rehabilitators, Dale Carlson and Irene Ruth. Direct and to-the-point instructions, enhanced with black-and-white illustrations by Hope M. Douglas, showing the reader just what to do to help baby ducks, birds, opossums, rabbits, raccoons, and squirrels that are lost, injured, attacked by pets or otherwise in trouble. From treating wounds to care and feeding and procedures for release, Wildlife Care For Birds And Mammals is a very highly recommended and thoroughly "user friendly" guide.

Informative but rather elementary. I was disappointed with theamount of information and quality of the actual book itself. ...product doesnt fit the price.

    2 out of 5 stars Poor reference.......2006-02-18

You'd think a book on any kind of First Aid (animals included) would be set up to be able to find things quickly, right? Well, I was amazed to find that the table of contents of this book actually has no page numbers. And, stunningly, there is no index at all. So how exactly are you supposed to find the information you need in an emergency?

3 out of 5 stars pretty good book.......2000-06-26

This book gives an ok amount of information. After you read most of it, though, it is not too useful

    Book Description

This clearly written, easy-to-read book offers a practical introduction to the topics of water supply, waste management, and pollution control. Because of the wide scope of the subject matter, the author has included review sections so that readers with little knowledge of biology, chemistry, geology, or hydraulics can comprehend and use this book, and mathematical topics are introduced at a relatively basic level. An overview of environmental technology introduces the book, and includes a discussion of public health, ecology, geology, and soils. The book then focuses on water and wastewater topics, including hydraulics and hydrology, water quality and water pollution, drinking water treatment and distribution, sewage collection, sewage treatment and disposal, and stormwater water management. Municipal solid waste, hazardous waste, air pollution, and noise pollution are also discussed. For individuals working in the fields of environmental quality control and public health protection, as well as civil engineers, wastewater technicians, and water treatment professionals.

This book is an excellent book for Civil Engineering schools. It is a first undergrad course in Civil Engneering/Technology or in Enviromental courses. It gives the basic knowledge in this subjects for prepartion for more advanced under undergrad studies of each of the major items in the book. The book is an overview of these crucial studies, and enables the student to easier undrstand and study the material in advanced courses.

I use this text in my course "Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment" It includes some chapters beyond the scope of the course, but there is enough "good stuff" in the first 10-11 chapters to make it appropriate. I hope this text is updated every few years to include new material. The style is clear and has numerous graphics and problems to help the student.

      ASIN: 1566705339

      Book Description

This third edition updates and expands the material presented in the best-selling first and second editions of Basic Hazardous Waste Management. It covers health and safety issues affecting hazardous waste workers, management and regulation of radioactive and biomedical/infectious wastes, as well as current trends in technologies. While the topics have been completely revised, the author employs the same practical approach that made the previous editions so popular. Chapters are structured to first outline the issue, subject, or technology, then to describe generic practice, and then to conclude with a summary of the statutory or regulatory approach. Blackman introduces fundamental issues such as human health hazards; the environmental impacts of toxic, reactive, and ignitable materials; the mobility, pathways and fates of released hazardous materials; and the roles of science, technology, and risk assessment in the standards-setting process. He explores hazardous waste site remediation technology, and the application of federal statutes, regulations, programs, and policies to the cleanup of contaminated sites. This text provides an introductory framework-which can serve as the foundation for a program of study in traditional as well as modern hazardous waste management-or a component of a related program. Its overview format provides numerous references to more detailed materials to assist the student or instructor in expansion on specific topics.
