Extraordinary Writing And Storytelling.......2005-09-28
This is a superbly written book about the outdoors and people. It chronicles the authors five-month long bird hunting odyssey across the U.S.. I cannot recommend it more highly.
Superb writing!.......2005-05-15
I've never hunted in my life but I was swept into this adventure with Fergus and his dog, Sweetzer. It was an exciting and thought-provoking read and I learned much about bird hunting (methods and ethics), the land, and our fragile environment. Fergus' writing style is humorous and intuitive. It's a must read for all who care about our environment.
Bo-ring.......2005-01-20
I liked the premise and based on the reviews bought A Hunters Road. Good outdoor writing effectively takes the reader afield in their minds eye, be it the forest of Maine, the flats off the Florida Keys or the African Savannah. Good outdoor writing also speaks to the place that hunting and fishing holds in our life; how it is a part of us emotionally and spiritually. Consequently, good outdoor writing is a tough job, one that A Hunters Road is not up to. For all it's promise this book is a relatively dry travel journal peppered with sappy hunting cliches.
A Classic.......2000-06-15
For anyone who has a genuine respect and love for upland bird hunting - the sport, the dogs, the game and their habitat - Jim Fergus's A Hunters Road is one of the definitive Classics. The book is not only a wonderfully entertaining read, it is also a serious commentary on those who pursue the sport, the good, the bad, the ugly, the ethics, and the environment. Of course, there will be reader's who either misread or misinterpret Fergus's intent. For those however, who wish to journey into the sanctity of the sport (bird lovers included), and be subliminally educated in the process, Fergus's A Hunter's Road is a must.
A Lost Hunter trying to Find his Way.......2000-03-19
I saw this book at the library and decided to check it out as I'm an avid outdoorsman. Unfortunately it [the book] deals more with the author trying to get his head straight from a bad childhood, than a good book about upland bird hunting. I personally can have little respect for the author after he and his hunting partners borrowed a shotgun from a rancher who tried to drown four yellow lab puppies. The author describes in detail how one of the pups, through its instincts, tried to swim to shore when the rancher threw them in the river. Any self-respecting upland hunter who loves dogs would not have borrowed the "time-of-day" from this rancher--let alone a shotgun. My Instincts tell me never to pick-up this book up again! If you want to read an an enjoyable book about upland bird hunting in America DO NOT READ this book--try another author like Gene Hill. Sincerely: Michael S. Graves
Book Description
Judo, or the Way of Gentleness, an ideal form of physical exercise and a reliable system, of self-defense, was specially created from traditional Japanese martial arts. This book by the creator of Kodokan judo is uniquely comprehensive and the most authoritative guide to this martial art ever
published.
Over a hundred years ago Jigoro Kano mastered swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat. Failing to discover any underlying principle, he set about designing a new martial art to reflect the concept of maximum efficiency in the use of physical and mental energy. Today, the concepts and techniques of
judo taught at the Kodokan are the ones originally devised by their creator and collected together in this book. Covering everything from the fundamental techniques to prearranged formal exercises for both men and women, the book offers detailed explanations of how techniques are combined in two
types of practice: randori (free practice) and kata (the practice of forms). In addition to a discussion of traditional methods of resuscitation, the book concludes with a useful appendix of information on the founder and the Kodokan International Judo Center, and a glossary of judo terminology.
Fully illustrated throughout, Kodokan Judo will help students and instructors everywhere to discover the principles, techniques, and spirit of this popular martial art.

The Bible Of Judo .......2007-09-18
As stated above, this book is considered the foundation of Judo, both modern day and early judo. Please be aware that this book is not to purchased and read as a novel: it is to supplement judo training in the dojo and assist with one's desire to achieve success in the sport of judo.
Mildly disappointed.......2007-09-11
I purchased the book with the hope that it would include more detail on the martial aspects of Judo, i.e. atemi (strikes), leglocks, and other things considered illegal in competition. It has some, but speaks of them very generally, and always refers one to the Kata. As a general reference it good, but not exactly what I had hoped.
Great reference Book.......2007-05-13
I have been practicing /training in Judo for approx. 3 months, great book for review /insight before and after training and performing at Dojo.
The Judo BiThe Judo Bibleble.......2007-04-12
These step-by-step instructions for Judo techniques will help you improve your throws. You'll also learn various types of Judo forms.
this book is good for leaning step-by-step techniques.......2007-04-07
this book is great for learning the techniques of judo, if your a judoka you need to get this book! I'm currently a yellow belt and this book has helped to improve my skills greatly! the author breaks down the techniques so you can execute the throws properly. the book also has a lot of black and white pictures to go with the techniques. this book is great for beginners and the more advanced, so if your looking for a good book to help with your skills then look no farther because this is the book for you!

Another "must have"..........2005-03-18
Running well over 400 pages, this book is a feast as well as a valuable resource for anyone interested in judo. The authors are both well know and highly respected martial artists and, in my estimation, this belongs on the shelf right along with "Kodokan Judo", "The Canon of Judo" and any other volumns you may consider indispensible to your judo library. Published in the early 80's it's not the easiest thing to come by, but is well worth the pursuit.
The Book for Randori no Kata.......2004-07-09
If you want a detailed study of nage no kata and katame no kata then this is the book for you. It is not for beginners, or anyone interested in just the basics. It is very comprehensive and authoritative. If you want to really understand the meaning of the kata, and every move in them, you will need this book. It does include general information about kata, but it does not give detailed information on any other kata besides nage and katame (known together as the randori no kata).
Real Martial Art!!!.......2001-09-04
This is a book for those who would like to know what Kodokan Judo differs from sport competition. As a sport Judo practicioner I could never expect so wide range of techniques and deep tradition. Now I can see the wisdom of Mr. Kano who preserved one of the best Japanese export products ever created -complete and powerful martial art! The photos, drawings and description are very clear and high quality. Absolute for every Judoka, regardless of rank and experience.
Simply the best!.......2001-08-03
If Draeger's grocery list was published, I'd buy it just because I have yet to read anything by him that wasn't great. Draeger Sensei lived and breathed budo/bugei and it shows in his writing. This is the most detailed and best laid out manual for the Kodokan kata available and is essential to any serious judoka's library.
a good textbook in judo.......2000-11-22
i just bought this book from kinokuniya bookstore. it is a very good book, i think. it presents the detailed explanation of techniques involved in judo. however, i think you will benefit most if you could combine this book with the reading of another one - "The Secrets of Judo" - a masterpiece in illustrating the mechanical principles that underlies Judo.
Book Description
Throughout the long history of Japan's martial traditions, judo has evolved into one of the nation's richest and most revered cultural legacies. The vast array of judo techniques has branched out into three distinct categories: throwing techniques, grappling techniques, and striking techniques. Of these, throwing techniques (nage-waza) represent some of the most dynamic and compelling aspects of this world-famous martial art. Recent developments in competition (shiai) and free practice (randori) have seen an increase in the number of forms of nage-waza, leading to often confusing interpretations of the techniques' names. The purpose of this book, therefore, is to provide a comprehensive and correct classification of nage-waza terminology as used in both competition and practice. All the sixty-seven official Kodokan throwing techniques and their various forms are explained thoroughly and concisely, and over 1,800 photographs accompany the text to provide the reader with the most comprehensive guide to judo's throwing forms to date. For many years author Toshiro Daigo has held the prestigious position of chief instructor at the Kodokan, regarded as the mecca for all judo enthusiasts, and this book is the result of painstaking research into the constantly changing forms of judo's nage-waza. It will be an invaluable resource for practitioners everywhere.

A fine book........2007-04-02
The other reviews give a good overview of what this book contains.
Kodokan Throwing Techniques- Daigo.......2007-03-06
Excellent detail regarding optional techniques/variations.
I am very impressed with the sequence detail of the photographs.
Also, counters well explained.
Outstanding book on Judo throws!.......2006-06-07
This is a treasure for anyone interested in throwing techniques, it covers all the formal Kodokan Judo throws with variations and Tsukuri's.
Photos are clear and foolowed sometimes by drawings from old Jujutsu books, plus historical facts on some of the techniques.
I just started reading and allreay learned so much, this will greatly help with my Judo practice!
Buy it, it's just a must have.
Authoritative Reference.......2005-11-26
This manual is an authoritative reference which gives clear explanations of the basic throws of Judo. It is not a book for beginners because it has so much detail that it could be confusing. For example, there are multiple versions of each throw shown, some of which are quite different from the basic technique. It helps the reader distinguish between throws that are similar, and distinct variations of each throw.
It is best used as a reference for further study of techniques learned in class. It is not really competition oriented, and is more geared to technicians and those interested in understanding the official position of the Kodokan regarding each technique. Only approved Kodokan techniques are shown, and of course no matwork is included.
Two words: Buy it!.......2005-10-25
Reading the other reviews here of Daigo Kudan's work, now released in English by Kodansha, it is very difficult to add to the words of praise for this monumental collection of Kodokan Judo nagewaza. Originally this material was published in a series of Kodokan magazine articles. In fact, the two models for principal photography worked with the author and publisher for eight years.
Kodansha Int'l deserves praise for its commitment to bringing judo books like "Kodokan Throwing Techniques" to students outside of Japan. Most recently, a reprint and updated translation of the coveted Mifune Judan's "The Canon of Judo" was also released, and it is hard to say which book I like best. Both will raise the level of the reader's understanding of the technical and philosophical foundations of Kodokan Judo.
I also recommend this book to those who are involved with other martial arts/sports, including "Brazilian Jujitsu" and "Mixed Martials Arts." A thorough study can only increase their expertise, and they may be surprised to discover that there are few things that are really "new" under the sun.
Book Description
This book describes the history and importance of Ju No Kata—the science of what it takes to execute throws—to the study and practice of judo. It also serves as a semi autobiography of the author, Keiko Fukuda, who is the world's foremost authority on Ju No Kata. At the age of 90, she still practices her passion. Understanding Ju No Kata is essential for passing higher-rank tests and this book, imbued with Fukuda's wisdom, is comprehensive and definitive.
Customer Reviews:
THE book to have on this topic.......2005-04-11
This is an authoritative and complete manual on the ju-no-kata (forms of gentleness). The photos and text make each move and each technique clear for both tori and uke. It is a technical manual useful for a judo student studying this form, or for anyone interested in the author since it includes a section with her photo album.
The author is the foremost authority in the world on this Kodokan kata. I wish it had been expanded even more from the original version previously published in Born for the Mat. The author's insights are valuable and it is good to have them recorded in this book.
Well written, interesting, and useful.......2004-12-18
Keiko Fukuda is the world's highest ranked female judoka (judo practitioner). Her grandfather was one of Jigoro Kano sensei's early instructors (for those who don't know, he's the guy who invented judo and started the Kodokan). While ju no kata is sometimes perceived as a woman's exercise (since they learn it during kyu [colored belt] ranks while men generally do not until dan [black belt]), both men and women can benefit from this excellent tome. You cannot learn any martial art from a book, of course, but I believe that this is essential material to refine and internalize techniques that you encounter on the dojo floor. The forms are aptly described, well illustrated, and easy to follow. Fukuda sensei also includes a fascinating write-up of her thoughts on the evolution and direction of the sport of judo along with some great pictures of her training throughout the years.
In many ways ju no kata is to judo what sanchin kata is to karate, an essential foundational exercise that expresses the principles and techniques of the art form. Unlike most components of judo, this kata can be practiced without a dogi (uniform) or tatami (padded mat) surface, since there is no throwing involved (or perhaps more accurately no falling). It is performed slowly with emphasis on the essential principles that make full-speed, full-power judo work effectively, and contains both offensive and defensive techniques. More specifically, the ju no kata technique refines a practitioner's sense of ju (gentleness/using an opponent's force against them), timing, body mechanics (e.g., proper hip rotation), tai sabaki waza (body movement/blending techniques), and mental focus. It also increases one's flexibility and conditioning if performed diligently.

Book Description
Like other Japanese American families in the Beacon Hill area of Seattle, 16-year-old Dan Inagaki's parents expect him to be an example of the "model minority." But unlike Dan's older brother, with his 4.0 GPA and Ivy League scholarship, Dan is tired of being called "Oriental" by his teachers, and sick of feeling invisible; Dan's growing self-hatred threatens his struggle to claim an identity. Sharing his anger and confusion are his best friends, Jerry Ito, Eddie Kanagae, and Frank Ishimoto, and together these Beacon Hill Boys fall into a spiral of rebellion that is all too all-American.
Customer Reviews:
Beacon Hill Boys interestingly relives the 1970s.......2003-06-22
This is not the typical coming of age story; it is the story of what is was like to be a Japanese American teenager in the early 1970s. Racial issues, pressures to conform, family dynamitcs, peer pressure, and more are important to the plot. The issues of the 1970s are packaged together with the story of a junior in high school in racially diverse Beacon Hill in Seattle. While this is fiction, one cannot help but think that this is semi-autobiographical. The story seems perfect as a companion to understanding the 1970s.
I liked the book and understand the stuggles and culture of Japanese Amercians better after reading it. I do think that too many characters might have been introduced, and if I read it again feel like I should list the characters and briefly identify them so I can remember them better when they appear again in the book. That's OK, though, since this book begs to be read more than once.
Beacon Hill Boys Review.......2003-03-06
Ken Mochizukiýs Beacon Hill Boys tells the story of Dan Inagaki, a typical teenage boy searching for love, acceptance, and his heritage during the 1970s. Danýs parents were forced into internment camps during World War II because of their Japanese heritage and his father fought for the United States during that same war; yet, Dan knows nothing of this history. He feels forced to petition for a comparative history class at his high school in order to discover what his parents will not reveal. While Dan and his friends worry about the Vietnam War draft, struggle to figure out girls, and make decisions about drugs, he is also fighting against the Japanese-American stereotype, his overachiever older brotherýs shadow, and the school administration.
While this book encourages young adults to question, it also paints a picture of victories that are easily won. Mochizuki understandably leaves out a bulky history lesson but leaves anyone without prior knowledge of that time period wondering. Hopefully, Beacon Hill Boys will motivate further reading about the internment of Japanese Americans. I recommend this book for any young adult (or adult) who has felt the pressures of identity, prejudice, or family expectations. This book could also be a starting point for anyone with no knowledge of the Japanese Internment history.
