A Timeless Play As Meaningful Today As When It Was Written.......2007-09-25
Note: I made some Mormon reader angry over my reviews of books written by Mormons out to prove the Book of Mormon, and that person has been slamming my reviews. My review of "Inherit the Wind" is concise and to the point. Oh, I get it. That person is a fanatic, and he or she doesn't like that state of mind exposed.
This explosive drama is a re-enactment of one of the twentieth century's greatest courtroom dramas--the 1925 Scopes Trail. The collision of William Jennings Bryan (a religious fundamentalist) and Clarence Darrow (an agnostic) is wonderfully enacted. Scopes, a high-school teacher, was put on trail for teaching evolution.
The preacher's daughter is in love with Scopes, and the sparks fly over the conflict. The preacher's religious fanaticism threatens to destroy his own family. Thus, the line from Proverbs 11:29: "He that troubleth his own house Shall inherit the wind."
I would also highly recommend Eric Hoffer's classic little book, "The True Believer." A must for educated readers.
The True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements (Perennial Classics)
Still Relevant.......2007-06-12
In a world that is still divided over the wide range dilemma of religion, Inherit the Wind is brilliant in the manner where it analyzes its complexity. The premise is relatively simple. Based on the infamous Scopes Monkey Trial of 1945, the plot charges forward when a young teacher, Cates, breaks a local rule banning the teaching of evolution in the classroom. He is arrested, and placed on trial within a not-so-welcoming town. Yet the real drama takes center stage when the trial moves beyond violating a local rule. Matthew Harrison, the national fundamentalist hero, views this trial as an opportunity to gain popularity across fundamentalist Christianity and decides to take on the case. His staunch orthodox is intensely rivaled by Henry Drummond, the avid atheist set on transforming the small town's approach to the bible and opposing view points. The novel's authors, Lawrence and Lee, take great care to expand the issue over the theory evolution to a broader context of the various forms of biblical interpretation. Lawrence and Lee bring up dilemmas such as whether or not the bible and religion itself have the capacity to correlate. The idea that the authors expanded the issue of evolution to a higher complexity focusing on biblical interpretation is in my opinion the greatest portion of the play, and deserves the reader's attention throughout.
Yet, while the variety of opinions were equally considered in the plot, they aren't the only portions that add to the novel's complexity and beauty. The famous political leaders themselves, Harrison and Drummond, are given traits that give justice to the men that they were based on. William Jennings Bryan, Harrison's character, was known to the public in the same form that Harrison was portrayed. Darrow, represented by Drummond, was a passionate atheist concerned for the law. The authors made it a point to stay true to the politicians' personas while at the same time steering the play away from a typical historical representation.
While in my opinion, the play had a liberal bias, it in no way went out to outright ridicule a conservative interpretation. What it did instead was demand that the general public remain open minded. It argues that people of all religious and political ideologies come together and discuss differences that in no way impede others from freely practicing what they believe. This in combination with the criticisms of our nation's justice system garner it the raves it deserves.
Do you believe GOD created the Earth?.......2006-11-22
In Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Bert Cates a school teacher of Hillsboro was put on trial for saying God didn't create the world. Because of this a very famous lawyer named Bradley was sent to represent hillsboro while Cates's represenative was a very unwelcomed man a man by the name of Henry Drummund. which of these two men will prevail and prove there opponent wrong? In the end "lost" and was fined. he then decided that he wouldn't be welcome in hillsboro anymore and left for a new life, but who do you think is the true winner?
Engaging work explores importance of the right to think. Some characters overly one dimensional.......2006-06-04
This is a well-written play based on real life events that explores important ideas fairly, and in an engaging manner. Basically, a teacher, Bertram Cates, is on trial for teaching evolution in the small town of Hillsboro "not long ago" (but likely in the 1950s). The prosecutor is Mathew Harrison Brady, a Christian who interprets the bible literally, and Cates' lawyer is Henry Drummond, an 'agnostic' who values the right to think.
A casual reader may think this play celebrates 'the triumph' of evolution over religion, but a deeper reading shows that what is celebrated is not evolution per se, but the right to think, the right to contemplate and learn about our world.
Likewise, religion is not denigrated per se, but rather, the authors criticize a dogmatic acceptance of religious tenants, particularly religious history. In fact, in the end, cynical, arrogant, cold hearted atheism is shown to be problematic as well: religion very much still has a place in teaching us in how to relate to our fellow human beings, which is with justice and generosity.
I do have one criticism- I would say that some characters, particularly the prosecutor Brady and the residents of the town of Hillsboro are painted one dimensionally as foolish, thoughtless buffoons. The authors make this very clear, stating in the stage directions that the town itself, not just the defendant Cates, is on trial.
On the other hand, equally flawed characters, like the cynical atheist journalist Hornbeck, are not presented in such a negative fashion (although I personally found his 'poetry' throughout the play as jarring and annoying.) And certainly the authors have nothing but praise for the lawyer Drummond.
A more fair portrayal of all characters concerned would have made this great work even stronger.
A great story still being played out today.......2006-03-20
This is a great play regarding creationism versus The theory of evolution. A must read if you are trying to understand what the intelligent design debate is all about.

Its About Numbers ..........2007-01-15
The numbers and lot of them. BA is the king of minor league baseball and is this is a collection of all the minor league stats. No special things, just a collection of numbers.
Better than the other baseball almanacs and from the makers of Baseball America Magazine.......2006-04-04
From the makers of Baseball America Magazine comes their annual 2006 almanac. Numerous insiders agree that this should be your source for fantasy baseball and the 2005-6 season. I have been very loyal to this almanac because Baseball America's layout seems to be better organized compared to others, such as Sporting News, ESPN, etc. If you subscribe to Baseball America Magazine you would be right to assume that their yearly almanac is of the same high quality and a must buy for the 2006 season. Their 2005 year in review is very well written and a great recap to prepare for opening day. This almanac will include stats on every team and virtually every player in the Majors. They also include Minor League teams, international teams, college teams and even high school teams. Don't be left out in the dark for the 2006 baseball season. Good overview of the season.......2006-01-12
This was my first year of purchasing the annual Baseball America Almanac. In the past I had purchased other guides and almanacs, but always passed over the Baseball America due to loyalty to other guides. Well, now my loyalty is to Baseball America's annual Almanac.
What do you get with this? A complete review of the MLB season, from off-season moves, regular season results and post-season results. You also get a team by team review which includes all of the minor league statistics. This is definitely a nice resource if you want to have an idea of who the next stars could be. But, the alamanac is not overwhelmed with statistics. The articles are well written by a variety of sports writers who cover each team.

A kid's opinion. That's what really matters........2005-04-14
The author came to my school and gave a book talk, and this book looked exciting so I bought it. It was what most books aren't: Educational AND exciting. That's what made it very enjoyable. The Mystery of the Maya: the Lost City of Palenque doesn't just tell you facts, the author is on an adventure and writes it sort of as if he is writing a journal along the way. It makes you feel like you're there. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who's hungry for fun!
A Great Book!.......2002-09-27
I homeschool my 11 year old son. He chose to do a project on the Maya and came across this book at the library. What a great book! The pictures are beautiful and the style of writing is very friendly.
You can tell that Peter loves his job of researching and writing. I highly recommend this book. I know that I am heading out to find more written by Peter!
Blessings,
Debbie

Book Description
Rachel's a straight-A student, on every teacher's wish list of Natural Helpers, and she practices the flute 45 minutes a day. But she grinds her teeth at night and dreads dinnertime, now that her troublemaker brother, Charles, has been expelled from boarding school and is back home, acting up to get attention from their parents.
Customer Reviews:
Unclear Ending.......2007-06-05
Rachel is a seventh grader and a super overachiever. She comes from a family where overachieving is valued, and her mother, an important trial lawyer, is the ultimate in overachieving. Rachel's sister Jess isn't perfect, but she gets along well with Rachel and is surviving high school despite her bad acne. The only problem in the family is Rachel's brother, Charles. He has been in boarding school, but proved to be such a discipline problem they expelled him. Now Rachel's peace and quiet is shattered when her brother comes home and looks for ways to torment her and the rest of her family.
Family dinners are no longer tranquil; Charles manages to ruin them by saying nasty things to the rest of his family members. He harasses his sisters and is downright rude to his parents. Rachel can't stand him, but she doesn't know what to do to get him to stop the way he is behaving. Her parents are at a loss, too.
To make matters even worse, Rachel's two best friends seem to be getting even closer together, and Rachel worries that her constant state of stress might be pushing them away. Will Rachel be able to survive the pressures of this year without snapping?
I liked the family relationships highlighted in this story. I liked the way Rachel and her sister interacted and the way Rachel and her parents interacted. It was interesting to see how her family fit together without Charles and how they fit together with him. I also liked Rachel's cousin and the different perspective she gave on Rachel's life.
I didn't like that this book didn't really have any conclusion. Did things get better? What happened after the Ellis Island incident? What was going on with Steph and Alison? I felt like the book should have covered a couple more months, and that would have given me time to get to know Charles a little bit better.
*My Review*.......2007-05-05
Here's to you Rachel Robinson is a book that many people could connect to.This book is a very good book because she is any other person like us hope you read it soon.I was given this book by my homeroom teacher Ms.Levinson.She recomended this book to me. I could realate to this book so muck because steph is a teenager and she is one too.She loves to have fun and I love to have fun to no matter where I'am at.She gets in trouble sometimes and I also get introuble too. I like this story because she is a teenager like me. Hope you read it soon.
In-depth Book.......2007-01-12
Here's to You, Rachel Robinson, is a very good book. Rachel, the main character, is in 7th grade, has an older sister suffering from a severe acne problem, and a brother, Charles. Charles is a huge trouble maker! All he ever does is get in trouble. He was sent away to boarding school, but was kicked out, because he never turned any work in. I really enjoyed this book, because it showed what it would be like to have a VERY annoying brother, who is always making you angry. This book also showed what it's liek to be a "normal" teenager today, becasue it tells about her crushes, school problems, adn her friendships. I would deffiently reccommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about what it is liek to be a teenager today in Judy Blume's eyes. This was a terriffic book that many people would enjoy.
Brittany S! u go rachel .......2006-12-18
This book has one of the most common genres which is realistic fiction. There are four main characters and they are Rachel, Charles, Allison, and Stephanie (Steph for short). This story is mostly taken place in a big house in the country around the 1900's .The biggest thing that happened to the people in this story is when Rachel's big brother comes home from boarding school after being expelled. He is not a very good person because he has done many bad things that affect the Robinsons life including changing all of their last names! A little bit about Charles had changed at the end of the book and I think that he only changed because of the good attitude that rubbed off of his family members and onto him.
This book was definitely a page turner because in every sentence there was something interesting and cool. The character that I mostly relate to is Stephanie. The reasons why are because she loves having fun and is very out there with her feeling because she expresses her feelings clear and isn't afraid about what people think of her. Also, if someone says something that sounds like an insult (even when it isn't) I would ask `What are you talking about? What do you mean? Can you please back that up?' I leaned that in this book everyone has a good side to them even if it is very deep. Judy Blume has a very good talent in writing. Even though you may think that she is a child writer she is starting to write more adult books. I really did enjoy this book and do plan to read more of them!!
Blume @ her best [possible spoilers].......2006-12-12
I read this in one sitting. I didn't need convincing, being a long-time (35+ years)Blume fan; rather I was impressed precisely because Blume continues to be great. I especially like the way she injects just the right dose of naughtiness (borrowing mom's dress w/o permission)and rebellion (older brother's pot party) while letting us know that these things are also indulged in by good kids...and adults, like the main character's cousin. I thoroughly enjoyed HTY,RR. Here's 2U, Judy Blume!
