Book Description
Bats and big cats. Armies of ants. Squawking parrots. Strangling figs. From the ground up to the tree tops, the tropical rainforest teems with life. Stunning drawings, step-by-step experiments, fun-to-do activities, and fascinating facts abound in this magical exploration of an essential ecosystem, in danger of disappearing forever. Tropical Rain Forest is a new edition to the One Samll Square Series not previously published in hardcover.
Customer Reviews:
Great, whether you get to the rain forest or not.......2002-03-14
The One Small Square series is wonderful: the concept is that you take a hypothetical square foot of an environment- woods, seashore, arctic tundra, rainforest, etc.- and explore it at all levels, from underground to the sky. Each book is extensively illustrated with all of the inter-connected layers of life- from fungus to megafauna- in the Square. On the margin of most of the 2-page spreads are activities that you can do, no matter where you live. Food chains, life cycles & seasons are explored, and the back section has an identification guide to all of the life forms presented in the book.
We took One Small Square: Tropical Rain Forest with us on a trip to the Brazilian rainforest with our 5 & 7 year olds. The book was great- for the grown ups & the kids! We used it as a guide to identify many of the animals & plants we saw, as background to help the girls understand what they were going to see, as reading on the long trips up the river. We did many of the activities- some before, some during, and some after the trip. Our guide was so impressed with it that he ordered a copy for himself, saying that it was hard to find something with so much information that was both accurate and interesting to people at many different levels of knowledge. Highly recommended!

Book Description
For decades, researchers have been interested in the structure, function and inhabitants of forest canopies, but unfortunately, a large portion of this fascinating ecosystem was inaccessible. Recently, with the use of balloons, dirigibles, cranes, towers, suspended catwalks, and a variety of modern climbing equipment, scientists have begun to penetrate this dense foliage, allowing for a detailed, authoritative account of this enchanting world.
Forest Canopies synthesizes the newly compiled data on canopy-dwelling organisms, including insects and other arthropods, lizards, birds, mammals, and, of course, the plants that both form and inhabit this unique aerial ecosystem.
Key Features
* Foreword by Thomas E. Lovejoy
* First synthesis of research into this previously unchartered forest region
* Details innovative techniques for the study of the canopy
* Describes the structure, function, and biodiversity of canopy ecosystems
* Ideal reading for botanists, naturalists, ecologists, and zoologists, or anyone interested in preserving the beauty of these great forests

A great canopy primer!.......2002-02-22
One of best synopsis of the current to near current canopy research topics, struggles, and future agendas! Lowman and Nadkarni continue to out do themselves with this suberbly edited book. Highly recommended for anyone interested in forest ecology and forest canopies who aren't afraid to look at some graphs. You'll learn something....
Exhaustive, Intriguing, and Well researched.......2000-06-26
I recently used this book for an indepedent study on Canopy Ecology and found it abosutley indispensible. Lowman and Nadkarni used the work of such big name scientists as Nigel Stork and Terry Erwin to assemble an array of canopy topics including access, structure, nutrient cycling, species compossition, epihyte and hemiephyte ecology, and even ethnobotany. Each chapter is clear cut and informative and the book does not waste space with cheesy fru-fru. Of particular interest to the aspiring canopy researcher is the suggestions for new avenues of research given at the end of almost every chapter.

The most comprehensive book on the subject to date. This book takes you into a world where few have been before, the forest canopy! A cutting edge book for a cutting edge field!

Book Description
The groundbreaking canopy-access and rain forest research at Lambir Hills National Park in Sarawak, Malaysia, has contributed an immense body of knowledge. Its major studies over more than a decade are synthesized here for the first time. The focus of this unique volume is on plant-animal interactions and some of the foundations that create and maintain tropical diversity, especially pollination and the phenomenon of the General Flowering. The work discussed has implications for tropical biology, ecology, and pollination studies. The power of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation events and drought, particularly in their effects on mutualisms, are discussed in detail.

Customer Reviews:
solid science, unforgettable images.......2001-04-19
This is a great popular science book, written by an adventurer/explorer who also has a Harvard PhD in biology. He travels all over the world for National Geographic, taking nature photos as well as reporting on cutting-edge discoveries in the rainforests. As such, he succeeds at mixing art and science in this book, which is somewhat technical, but explained in clear language that laymen can understand. THis book changed the way I saw rainforests: fully 9/10s of their biota are in the canopy, in the leaves high above, which you would never from the ground. And Moffet went up there with camera to photograph it with some of the world's best scientists. The result is masterful.
It is truly a pity that this book is out of print. I wrote a review of it for the Boston Globe when it came out and later met the author, Moffet. He was as interesting and colorful as the book, full of hilarious stories of his adventures.

Book Description
Arthropods are the most diverse group of organisms on our planet, and the tropical rainforests represent the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems. This volume provides an overview of data collected during recent studies in Australia, Africa, Asia, and South America. The contributions focus on the distribution of arthropods and their use of resources in the rainforest canopies, providing a basis for comparison between the forest ecosystems of the main biogeographical regions. The temporal dynamics of arthropod communities, habitats and food selection are examined within and among tropical tree crowns, as are the effects of forest disturbance.
Book Description
The accomplishment of the United States Olympic Hockey team during the 1972 Olympic Winter Games has seemingly been one of hockey's most well-kept secrets in this country. This is the story of Striking Silver and its members, which included schoolboy heroes and college All-Americans as well as those plucked from the jungles of Vietnam: Ahearn, Bader, Boucha, Brown, Christiansen, Curran, Ftorek, Howe, Irving, McElmury, McGlynn, McIntosh, Mellor, Naslund, Olds, Regan, Sanders, Sarner, Sheehy, and Sears ? the Silver Medalwinning 1972 United States Olympic Hockey team.
Customer Reviews:
Let's see... is this really an untold story?.......2007-08-15
The premise of the book is that not many people are aware of our country's on-ice success in the 1972 Olympics. Let's see, I grew up in Edina, Minnesota which means:
* I graduated from HS one year after Dean Williamson, son of Murray
* I have caddied for Walter Bush, a long-time USA Hockey official
* A friend played on a Bantam team coached by Craig Sarner, an effective forward on this silver medal squad
* I've heard many tales about Bruce McIntosh starring for my HS and later the University of Minnesota
AND....
I'D NEVER HEARD THIS STORY BEFORE. Granted I hadn't yet turned 4 when they played in Sapporo, but it isn't like this was a mystery. I read about the 1960 Olympics when I was about 10 and obviously remember where I was in 1980 (Fergus Falls, playing in a Pee Wee tournament). Why no talk about 1972?
Not only do the Caraccioli brothers do a good job of relaying the story, they also do a good job of addressing that very question.
Worth a read. You'll breeze through it quickly as it is pretty direct on covering the story without straying from topic. Even though you now how it ends - they win the silver - it is hard to put down.
Before the gold........2007-01-14
People who have an interest in the US amateur ice hockey program will want to read this book in order to fill gaps in what has become the accepted story of the team before victory in the Lake Placid games(1980). The authors, with the unlikely names of Tom and Jerry, do a good job prsenting their case that the tools used to win an Olympic gold metal were forged by an earlier team and passed on to those who followed. Anyone interested in the deveopment of North American hockey will learn from this tale.
Great job by the brothers!.......2006-06-23
This is a must-read for sports fans. The brothers/authors have written a thoroughly entertaining account of a wonderful moment in U.S. international sports history. Readers will remember this book forever. Bravo!
Going back further in American hockey history.......2006-04-27
Hockey fans will find riveting Tom Caraccioli & Jerry Caraccioli's STRIKING SILVER: THE UNTOLD STORY OF AMERICA'S FORGOTTEN HOCKEY TEAM. While many think of American hockey as starting in the 1980s; in a reality in 1972 the achievements of a young team which represented the U.S. in Asia in the Olympics went largely unrecognized during the tumult of Vietnam politics. It's time their story was told, and STRIKING SILVER achieves this, revealing the team, its major players, and the events that made them outstanding, though under-reported. Quotes from players and observers and source materials recreate the times in an involving survey.
A true underdog story.......2006-04-20
One of the great underdog stories in U.S. sports history, overlooked until now. Very interesting to learn how the coach took his winning tactics from the Russians and set the stage for the gold medal win in 1980. He was a true innovator in that respect. And the individual chapters on each player help bring their stories to life. Amazing to learn of the players who served in Vietnam before going to Japan and winning a silver medal. Overall it's the kind of story you wouldn't believe if not for the fact that it really happened. Have to wonder what the legacy would be if it took place in America, or if we were able to follow it on live tv. In today's world this would be all over the front pages of every newspaper and magazine, but back then it was virtually unknown. Glad this story was finally told, this book will occupy a space next to my favorites in my sports library.

Foghorn Outdoors: Florida Beaches 2 Ed: The Best Places to Swim, Play, Eat, and Stay
ASIN: 1573540544 |
Book Description
From the award-winning authors of California Beaches - a guide to every strip of sand in the Sunshine State.
Customer Reviews:
Florida is a Huge Beach waiting for you!.......2004-01-04
With over 400 beaches, Florida is Mecca for those with a need for sun and sand. This 681 page guide is a godsend to those that live for the bronzed body, fun, and zany people that these beaches offer.
This guide is the most accurate, comprehensive guide on Florida beaches to date. The authors have spent over 17 years in compiling this great guide. The comments and selections are theirs alone. The guide is full of facts (Florida is a 447 mile peninsula), stats (Florida grew in habitats by 23% in one decade) and hard information (the main reason to buy the guide). Puterbaugh and Bisbort, as the writing will evidence, are conservationists, strongly lauding eco-tourism. Kudos.
Though the nightlife sections in this guide are far the best available, the accommodations and costal cuisine sections are paltry and poor; nowhere near the strength of better state guides. Puterbaugh and Bisbort selected the 25 "Top" beaches among the 400 beaches in Florida, but sadly omitted a map showing where these 25 beaches are located. Thus you do the work via the index.
I used this guide while traveling for a month through Florida. `Florida Beaches' could be a stand alone guide, but I recommend that you use it in concert with an excellent state guide, such as Frommer's Florida (see my review). Together, these guides will direct you to the best Florida has to offer. 4.5 Stars. Strongly Recommended.
Way too Opinionated.......2000-09-25
Hard to believe these two guys spent so much time in Florida without discovering what a sandspur really is. (They refer to "sandspur lots" as lots with sand and spurs. The sandspur is a common weed, well-documented in Florida.) But this doesn't seem to be the book's only shortcoming. Evidently the authors' idea of a good beach is a spring-break spot, fresh with wet T-shirts and tequila shooters. That's okay for some, but there are Floridians who find other things about the beach compelling.
Florida Beaches is a Must Read.......1999-05-05
Florida Beaches was a most necessary travel companion during a recent trip down the Florida coast. Authors Puterbaugh and Bisbort possess an insight and humor not found in the typical travel book.
Book deserves a place next to the suntan lotion.......1999-04-29
If you thought travel guides were written by chamber of commerce clones or paid hirelings of the booster flacks, then this book will make you rethink that stereotype. It's funny, raw, irreverent, honest, literate, in fact, it reads like something written by the heirs to the travel writing tradition of Jacks London and Kerouac. This is no b.s.
Book Description
Hit the beach with this irreverent guide to every publicly accessible stretch of sand Florida offers. Discover the best spots for sunning, eating key lime pie, observing manatees, and even heading out for an evening on the town. Parke Puterbaugh and Alan Bisbort recommend restaurants and hotels for all budgets and don't hold back on their opinionated reviews.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT REFERENCE BOOK!.......2004-12-15
If this book had more pictures in it, I would have given it 5 stars. However, overall it is a very through book. We used it to create our new "The Best Florida Beaches / Waves Virtual Vacations" DVD here on Amazon. So, if you want to really see and hear what these beaches feel like, check out our DVD after reading this book.
Florida has a huge variety of beaches overall from the Keys to the panhandle and back down the Atlantic to Miami. You will see the beaches change radically in color (white, sand, orange, grey) and texture (clay, shell, and sand). Having shot the best beaches from the Caribbean, California, Hawaii, I'd say Florida has some of the best and unusual orange / yellow sunsets, I've ever seen and despite being very flat, has some very diverse and spectacular beaches. Enjoy!
Indispensable guide for the beach lover.......2003-07-23
The authors rate the beaches using a scale from 1 through 5. A beach rating of 1 indicates an "abysmal [beach]; keep driving;" a five indicates an "extraordinary [beach]; beach heaven."The criteria for the ratings aren't clearly spelled out, but become apparent upon reading the reviews.Areas with with plentiful beach access points, free parking, uncluttered views, amenities (such as showers, bathrooms, volleyball nets, etc.) are likely to rate highly on these authors' scale. The information here is well-researched and plentiful. The authors do make the point to bring up which beaches are good for those who want different types of beach experiences: surfers, families with young children, college crowds during Spring Break, adults looking for a quiet beach vacation, etc.Naturally, there are comments about sand and wave conditions and other notable conditions at the beach in question. An example: a note about the rocks which hide under the surf in Satellite Beach which can cause one to lose their footing, and for which there is no posted warning. Now that is useful information for the beach-lover who enjoys the surf, and as far as I know, is unavailable elsewhere. There's plenty of other good information here: where to stay, eat, drink, shop, rent bicycles and skates and other exercise gear, and attempts to provide an overall feel for the beach town (i.e. upscale, trashy-but-fun, snobby, havens for Brits on holidays, and more.)The book is unabashadly skewed by the authors' perspective that beach access should be plentiful and free for all residents and vistors of the state, who don't have the financial wherewithal to afford a beachside retreat or lodgings. There's even a sidebar about riparian rights. Fascinating stuff. But I digress.Do expect to read harsh words about those beach towns which provide little in the way of public beach access, such as Longboat Key. Overall, highy recommended, whether you plan to visit or already reside here. I'm a lifelong Floridian and found this to be an entertaining and informative guide for my last beach vacation.A quibble: this edition is the most recent available, but the information on hotels and some restaurants is dated. Use this book in concert with another planning guide for an extended stay (recent versions of Fodors, Frommers, etc.) I plan to buy the 3rd edition when it's published.

Book Description
At home, high-school junior Travis Ellroy has to live up to the memory of his golden-boy brother who committed suicide. At school he faces constant pressure and ridicule from the jocks and their girlfriends. Then he meets Daniel, a new kid who doesn't seem afraid of anything. All Travis is good at is drawing, and praise from Daniel leads to a combustible friendshipone where manipulation makes Travis go to violent extremes to get what he thinks he wants and deserves most. Though you know Travis brings a gun to school from the first chapter, the events leading up to that day unfold with gripping tension, making this powerful debut novel impossible to put down.
Customer Reviews:
Okay........2007-01-01
I am a 19 year old, I had bought this book for my 16 year old brother for Xmas. I was expecting something a little challenging, and with more of a plot twist.
I read it for myself before handing it over, with slightly high expectations.
I don't feel like the characters were developed enough, & the one severe plot twist comes so out of the blue, it wasn't believable.
It was an awfully easy read, with nothing all that substantial. The writing style was obviously adult in the sense EVERY typical teenage icon/cliche/whathaveyou was used..
It was just standard. Not bad, but nothing moving.. Cliche & DONE so many times over.
The LAST DOMINO - Straight Shooting from the Highschool Front........2005-07-28
A spectacular debut novel! Adam Meyer writes with all the precision and intensity of a seasoned veteran twice his age! If one were to take the characters of FIGHT CLUB, toss in the sentiment of AMERICAN BEAUTY, and heat until it boiled over, you'd get THE LAST DOMINO. Adam Meyer is one writer to keep an eye on!

Travis Ellroy hasn't had it easy, especially after his seemingly-perfect brother, Richie, committed suicide. One day, after an argument with his father, he fills his pockets with rocks and starts throwing them. One of them inadvertently hits the windshield of a black Taurus - the car of one of the most popular guys in school, P.J. After this incident, P.J. is furious with Travis, hassling and threatening him at school, and it doesn't help that Travis can't get enough money ($300) to pay P.J. back for the broken windshield, no thanks to his lousy, low-paying job at Coffee Time.
Furthermore, Travis doesn't exactly have the best reputation at school. He is a misfit who only has two real friends - Moira and Ross - and is known for being crazy and whacked.
His application for a promotion at Coffee Time is rejected, and instead, Jordan, a classmate of Travis's, gets it.
Travis's hopes of winning the affections of the prettiest girl in school, Koryn, are crushed, after he discovers his feelings for her are unrequited.
Then a new guy comes along - Daniel Pulver. Daniel is a tough, courageous character, who befriends Travis and teaches him how to defend himself against bullies like P.J. Not only that, but Daniel encourages Travis to be angry and violent - turning him against his parents, Jordan, Koryn, his best friends, Moria and Ross, and others. He fuels Daniel's anger - the type of guy who says, "You gonna take that from him?"
Daniel also introduces Travis to "The List" - of people who need to be shot. Ultimately, Daniel teaches Travis how to maneuver and work a gun.
Before he knows it, Travis's world is spiralling out of control. He's not himself anymore; he becomes indifferent; apathetic; more angry; more violent.
And then... Travis does something that will change the lives of the people around him - and his - forever. His irrevocable action is the gripping and suspenseful climax of this riveting story, leading directly to its chilling conclusion.
Adam Meyer has done a terrific job of effectively writing a harrowing, chilling book that will appeal to readers of a young adult audience. This book will interest males and females alike. Travis's voice is fresh, real, and it reverberates in your head long after the book is finished. His emotions and violent fantasies epitomize those who have been pushed to the very edge, whose last domino has fallen down.
Each character in The Last Domino is well-rounded and developed, making the story that much more believable. The characters in this book aren't characters that you will just read about and forget - even while reading the story, I found that I was concerned for these characters, that I actually cared about them.
I finished this book in one day - it was just that compelling. I even stayed up 'til 3am reading it, but I didn't mind. In fact, I had trouble sleeping even after I finished the book, because I couldn't stop thinking about it.
Evocative, riveting, suspenseful, and exciting, The Last Domino is an utterly fantastic book that deserves to be read by all teens. It is memorable; the characters are so real, so palpable, that you feel like you know them; and the writing is superb. It touches upon a sensitive subject, but it is written in such an effective manner that it isn't just a cliché. Adam Meyer is a young adult author to look for - he brings a whole new perspective to things, and I look forward to reading more of his work.
The Last Domino is a must-read, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an engaging, page-turning book that you won't be able to put down.
Highschool: Not as great as everyone thinks!.......2005-06-29
This book may be looked at differently by certain people but for some this is exactly how life in high school is. Full of pressure, persuasive friends, bullies, and as much as we hate to admit it teenage death, suicide and guns in the school place. This book showed all of these things and the explosive ending of combining it all. A compacted version of what I just said made by Adma Meyer, the author of the book, is "A troubled teenager. A vicious bully. A loaded gun. WELCOME TO HIGH SCHOOL." and as much as we hate to admit this is what people face day by day at their high school.
By placing a bully, a teenager, a persuasive friend and the voice of his brother in the teens head the outcome was bound to be tragic for not only the teen but for the people around him. We would find that with the help of Daniel and Richie Travis Ellroy will go to extremes that will put everyone in danger. Will Daniel manipulate Travis and if so what will happen to the troubled teen, the vicious bully, the persuasive friend and a loaded gun?
WELCOME TO HIGH SCHOOL!
All Fell Down.......2005-06-02
The story opens in 2004 with Travis Ellroy, a junior in high school carrying a firearm. He rides his late brother's bike, knowing he "rides it for the last time." Immediately the reader is pulled into this very compelling, very intense story.
Travis had an older brother named Richie who committed suicide in 1998. Star athlete and favored son, Richie had been spoon fed a sense of entitlement from the beginning. He graduates with the Class of 1997 with people singing his praises years later. Indeed, Travis lingers in his shadow as his English teacher calls him "Mr. Ellroy" so as not to mistakenly call him Richie.
The boy has a punitive father and a disinterested mother, so he is more or less left to his own devices. The one thing that gets their juices flowing is when Travis sneaks into Richie's room, which is kept locked. Richie is treated like a spectral saint in that household.
Things take a toll on Travis. A girl named Koryn whom he likes does not return his interest; his nemesis, classmate Jordan is hired as his manager at a local coffee shop; Travis lies and says he has been promoted; he throws rocks at cars after being punished and has the bad luck to crack the Sheriff's son's windshield. P.J., the hulking thug never stops hounding Travis; he extorts more money from Travis to fix the windshield even after he has it repaired.
Enter Daniel. A cool, smooth, serpentine operator who slithers into Travis' life, Daniel grooms Travis to, in his words, "stand up for himself." He feeds off the latter's anger; he goads Travis into making some very deadly decisions.
A very intense, riveting book that will leave readers thinking for a very long time. The characters are well drawn; fully fleshed out and the story will indeed leave indelible impressions on readers.
Nancy Garden's "End Games" is an excellent companion book to this one.

Author's Note.......2001-11-14
The return of a son should be reason enough to kill the fattened calf. Instead, Jeff Darnell isn't exactly welcomed with open arms. Jeff's claim to the family business is the spark that exposes a scheme of corporate corruption and cover-ups.
The trail leads to the two people who have the means and motive to divert the Darnell wealth into their personal bank accounts.
A chance discovery in a small village in Vietnam sets in motion the incredible events that blow the lid off a family matter and transform it into a drama that spans the globe. The stakes are high. The action explodes in a pattern of disappearance, indictments, and murder.
Maria's alliance with Jeff will either bring her exoneration or seal her fate. This should have been the perfect crime.
