if you care about Labrador Retrievers, get this book.......2005-12-28
I have an English Labrador. (She's the love of my life.) This book is different than a lot of the stuff I've read because it doesn't focus on the Labrador of the AKC, or the Labrador Retriever Club of America to the exclusion of all the other valuable opinions on Labs that exist in the world. Labradors have been around a lot longer than the AKC and they aren't necessarily being well defined by them now. The book does a great job comparing and contrasting the difference between English Labs and American Labs. It also very clearly illustrates an ideal Lab versus labs that have faults (with pictures instead of long, confusing paragraphs.) And, it has lots of lovely photographs of beautiful Labs at work and play. If you care about Labradors, as a breed, then this is a must read.
Nice Compendium Of Information On Labrador Retrievers!.......2004-03-06
Starting with the quite believable notion that the Labrador Retriever is perhaps the single most agreeable and people-oriented creature this side of Paradise, the author shows the reader how and why to care for God's most perfect earthly creature, the Labrador Retriever! By showing us the degree to which the breed represents a witch's brew of intelligence, honesty and loyalty to its human companions, the author illustrates why the Labrador has become the single most popular breed of dog in the world today. Labradors are sturdy creatures indeed, bred for sporting use along the quicksilver shores of Newfoundland, where the water temperatures and sea conditions require a healthy dollop of strength and endurance, and those are qualities these dogs have in spades.
For any of us that have seen them at work or play in the fields and in the water, their unique combination of physical attributes and obvious intelligence makes them the ideal human companion. I should know; I live with four of them! The proof of their adaptability to almost any condition and their loyalty, intelligence, and unparalleled work ethic is demonstrated by the wide use of them as guide dogs and as adjunct partners for the physically handicapped. Stories of Labradors crawling out onto the ice to save their masters are legendary, as are the tales of them rescuing children from fires or from underneath rubble. Never has there been a dog superior to them.
The author has recruited a wide variety of experts to testify as to the qualities and abilities of the dog, and one walks away from a reading of the book much better informed as to the all of the many qualities and capabilities of the breed, which seems to represent an astonishing list of useful and worthwhile attributes. We also get quite critical information as to what to look for when choosing a lab, and how to analyze the quality of the puppy you see before you. The author offers a compendium of information regarding genetics, feeding, health care, and inherited dispositions, as well as some sage advice as to how to ensure your puppy becomes the grown up Labrador companion you will come to view as another family member. This is a great book, and one I heartily recommend! Enjoy!
Has it's good points and bad points.......2003-12-08
I don't find this book to be anything special. Although certain things about this book are fantastic, other aspects are annoying or inadequate. Let me start with what is good about the book.
Good points:
Excellent photography, beautiful pictures of dogs.
Outstanding descriptions of the breed standard, presented in a very educational and helpful way.
A good amount of information on competition, breeding and current breeders.
Bad points:
Too much information which is not useful to the typical pet owner, and not enough information that is useful... information is quite sparse on puppy training, socialization, etc.
Annoyingly obvious British colloquial language style, and not particularly well written or readable by any standard.
Lame attempts at scientific presentations of nutrition and anatomy, when this person is obviously not a scientist.
Scattery accounts of the breed history, filled with quotes without much useful elaboration.
The Ultimate Labrador Retriever.......2000-05-24
This Book is very informative, it covers all aspects of the Labrador Retriever. An interesting history of the Labrador and its development is included. I found the book very helpful in assessing the conformation and pedigree of my puppy. The Ultimate Labrador Retriever gives the reader both UK and US standards for conformation, as well as showing and titles offered. Many of the world's top Labradors and top Labrador kennels are discussed. Genetic disorders and general health care are discussed in depth. AS a first time Labrador Retriever owner, I found this book to contain all the information I will need, starting with choosing a puppy and covering all bases through training and showing in all disciplines. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would, without hesitation, recommend it to any Lab enthusiast.
Highly Informational.......1999-01-05
This book provides comprhensive detail of breed standards and Lab care. This book is a must for anyone who owns or wants to buy a Labrador. The book provides great detail for the Labrador breed stanadard, as well as provides you with direction for showing and breeding.

Customer Reviews:
This Book Flushed out Memories of the Love of My Lab.......2006-02-07
I had this book for sometime, it was a gift. I didn't really know what a great book I had until I actually read it. Looking at the pictures was great, until I lost my own Chocolate Lab, "Roxie". The memories she and I made, were flushed out as I read the happiness of other inspired Lab Lovers. I though no one else can love a dog as much as I loved mine. There are so many people blessed with Labs that don't realize what a gift a Lab is. They are the best all around dog, that I fell in love with at the age of 18 or so. Now 33 I'm searching for another Lab puppy to love again. This book allowed me to see the other stories, people shared and flushed stories from my own heart that had been forgotten as time has a way of covering the memories that are made in the life of a Lab, if only for a short while I have the memories of my Lab and others, uncovered.
Another Wonderful Book On The Wonders Of Labs!.......2004-01-09
Here is another attractive entry by naturalist author Todd Berger, one that takes a truly loving look at America's singular and by far most popular wonder dog, the Labrador Retriever. As Berger points out so well, there are few other animals who draw such love from humans as a dog, and surely the Lab is the most loveable of the breeds. Here he presents the Labrador Retriever in all its wonder and does a yeoman service to the rest of us by enumerating all of the superb qualities the dog has to offer potential human enthusiasts. They are by reputation excellent working dogs, both as field dogs and as guide dogs for the disabled. They are also incredibly loyal, and the news services are often filled with wonderful and heartwarming stories of Labs crawling out on the ice to save their masters, often at considerable danger to themselves. Nonetheless, they stand by our sides.
Therefore, this book, "The Love Of Labs', is the ultimate tribute to the breed, and is chock-full with stories and photos that actively serve to substantiate what might otherwise seem as idle boasts and overethusiastic praise. In fact, for anyone who spends any time around Labs, like me, it is hard nto to use superlatives when describing them. More than one of the stories herein will bring a smile to your face, a tear to your eye, and the idea in your noggin perhaps it is time to consider getting one of these incredible creatures into you rlife, and that of your extended family. they boost the energy level in any room they enter, are incredible chick-magnets, and have been shown to reduce high blood pressure and dissipate depression through their mere presence. This is a wonderful book about what I believe to be the world's most nearly perfect living creature, the Labrador Retriever! Enjoy!
Good story book, beautiful photos.......2000-10-18
This is a story book. The stories narrated in the book show the really nice characteristics of this excellent dogs. The photographs are beautiful. It's a nice tribute to the Labrador. Only downside is that all, and I do mean all, the stories are hunting stories. I believe these dogs have much more to say in other aspects of life. For all of you who hunt with a Lab, you will really love this book. Those of you who don't hunt but are really fond to this breed, you will like it very much, myself included. For those of you looking for information on the breed, not recomended.
A lab is pure love.......2000-09-13
I have only had the priviledge of owning our adopted black lab, Abbott (rescued by Southern California Labrador Retriever Rescue) for about 4 months. I can not tell you how incredible these dogs are!! The family loyalty is palpable. The intense devotion these dogs display to their family is remarkable. The absolute joy this dog has brought to us is a gift that is compounded daily. How can one really describe a lab's love for their family? (and the family for them) I was so happy to see a book that comes close to trying to express this.
Quite simply, the stories and pictures are beautiful. Share this book with anyone that loves these dogs for it is a pure delight just to turn the pages and look at the pictures! We feel so lucky to live with the real thing!

Lennard Zinn is a cycling god. Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance is revered as a bible among the fat-tire set; he now extends the gospel to the rest of the cycling faithful in Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance.
From simple, routine maintenance to more complicated tasks, Zinn remains "convinced that anyone with an opposable thumb can perform any repair on a bike." He begins with "Basic Stuff" such as pre-ride inspections and cleaning the drive train, and continues on through the super-advanced task of wheel building--arguing that "the construction of a good set of bicycle wheels is actually a straightforward task." Zinn guides readers step by step through every possible repair on every possible part, handlebar grips to Maric Mektronic electronic shifting, with plain-speaking text and helpful illustrations. There's even a section on emergency repairs, including unexpected advice such as straightening a bent rim by hitting it against the ground: "You may be surprised how straight you can get a wheel this way."
This comprehensive manual is essential reading for those who love their bike. "All you have to do is follow the instructions and trust yourself." Indeed. --M. Stein

The cost of a copy of Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance should be sufficient in most cases. This well-organized and -illustrated guide, which incorporates the latest in component technology and innovations, shows how to maintain every part of a road bike. This includes chains, derailleurs, shifters, wheels, brakes, cranks, bottom brackets, pedals, saddles, seatposts, handlebars, stems, headsets, forks, and frames — all covered in Lennard Zinn’s trademark clear and concise prose. Novices and seasoned mechanics alike can benefit from the clear illustrations, exploded views of how components go together, and practical tips on how to completely and properly maintain all aspects of their road bikes to ensure hours of trouble-free riding. Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance (2nd Edition).......2007-01-10
Bike maintenance is not rocket science; there aren't that many parts to a bicycle. Most problems that occur with a bicycle can be diagnosed and rectified by anyone possessing a little mechanical aptitude. However, Zinn's book fast tracts the resolve to issues for even the most experienced engineer, by providing clear schematic diagrams of assemblies and tips that make the repair or adjustment easier and quicker.
I see this book as a must for those that know little about the assembly units that make a bicycle and as a good occasional reference for the experienced mechanic. Overall, for the money, this is a good book to have in one's library.
A solid investment.......2006-11-19
I was tired of dealing with the poor service at my local bike shop and decided to start doing my own repairs. I bought this book and the Bicycling guide at the same time and this book has rapidly acquired the grease stained fingerprints and bent spine of a useful guide, while the Bicycling guide rests on the shelf.
Zinn's book makes excellent use of diagrams, which I'd much rather have as a reference than photos, and the book is written in a way that made some of the more technical aspects of maintaining and repairing bicycles very accessible to a new repairer like me. It also covers a good scope of road bicycle types and had plenty of information relevant to Cyclo-Cross bikes, which was a big plus to me.

Lennard Zinn explains that it doesn't take special skills to learn how to care for one's bike, only "a passion for spreading new grease on old parts." Clearly, his ambition is to share with newcomers the Zen-like joy of bike maintenance. But it's seasoned bike mechanics that should be tripping over each other for a copy of this comprehensive and ambitious manual. Zinn differs from other how-to books by guiding readers--with plain-speaking text--through almost every imaginable repair on almost every imaginable part. He covers everything from rebuilding hubs, to loosening seized stems, to installing six different types of bottom brackets. He even risks cycling blasphemy by walking mere mortals through the art of wheel building--an intimidating task that can take years to perfect. Although best suited for the old pros, his guide is user- friendly, funny, and essential to anyone willing to love their bike. --Ben Tiffany
Book Description
The most concise, well-organized, and clearly illustrated reference available, Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance gently guides the reader — regardless of mountain bike experience or mechanical prowess — through every aspect of maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting in a succinct and easy-to-read format and presents the latest technological advances and equipment in mountain bike components. Detailed diagrams and simple instructions explain everything from repairing a flat tire to building a wheel. The instructions are useful for anyone interested in mountain bikes, yet concise and complete enough to cover every state-of-the art technical concern facing today's mountain biker. This timely revision offers updated information on shock pump adaptors, master links, V-brakes, cleat mounting and pedal overhaul, oversize handlebars, carbon steering tubes, tubeless rims, and much more. Repairs are rated for degree of difficulty while line drawings illustrate how parts fit together and show the tools needed to keep bikes in top shape and pedaling smoothly both on and off the trail.

A great intro to mountain bike maintenance.......2007-10-09
What can I add that hasn't already been said earlier?
If you can get the book and the dvd. This has been a great introduction for myself as I wanted to learn how to best maintain my mountain bike. It has proven to be very accessible for even a beginner like myself and yet not feel like I'm being talked down to by the author.
I only recently bought this and already some of the maintenance & repairs I've done have saved some serious cash. Now as I walk into the local bicycle shop I know what I need for the tasks at hand.
For the maintenance and repairs I do now I save myself money and also I spare the time of the local bicycle mechanics by not taking it in for maintenance jobs I can now do. They have noted this and do appreciate it.
Clear, well writen and with good schemes and graphics.......2007-08-03
I found that this was exactly what I was looking for. Clear, simple when it can be simple and not oversimplified when the things are complicated. If you are like me a MTB enthusiast with inclinations to understand, maintain and even repair ocasionally your bike, this is the book for you. Not that it covers only basic material, but it is friendly to newcomers that will, I believe, enjoy putting their hands on the bike.
Search the internet, its cheaper.......2007-07-09
Good book, easy to read and understand.
Yet I still feel the internet is a much greater resource which the ability to search for specific problems, rather than browsing problems, and ability to talk with people (such as on forums).
Great if you want a book though.
great textbook.......2007-05-21
This is a nicely written and very informative book--a must for anyone who wants to do his/her own maintenence on a mountain bike. For long-time and experienced mechanics, much will be review, but there are always those little things that you haven't done before, or have changed with new equipment. This book gives you the proper approach in a clear, no-nonsense fashion.
very helpful.......2007-04-11
I'm not a techie biker; I don't know all about bikes and components. I like this book and use it for general maintenance. It covers many different types of components. I do sometimes have a little trouble matching up the pictures and descriptions to reality. Glad I bought it.

Book Description
It seems incredible that a call-in TV show featuring pictures of missing children could change her life so drastically, but when a 16-year-old recognizes her father in the photo on the screen, she discovers that the family who's been searching for their daughter is looking for her.
But who is she? Brooke or Amy? She's been living with her father and now learns he's taken her illegally. Who do you love when everyone says they love you? How can anyone know which parent loves you most?
Susan Beth Pfeffer delivers yet another hard-hitting novel that delves into the issues that confront real teens today.
"Lively narration, peppered with wry, insightful wit, and the story's balanced resolution make it enjoyable reading...."--School Library Journal
"Pfeffer perfectly conveys Brooke's hurt and resentment.... Readers will share Brooke's anxiety as she tries to adapt to a new family while remaining loyal to her father, and they'll understand her anger when she finally realizes the cost of her father's actions."--Booklist
"The emotions are raw...but the story combines the draw of sensational headlines with an understanding of teenage struggles."--The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"The author maintains so brisk a pace and so appealingly plumbs her heroine's emotional life that the reader will want to believe in the story."--Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Brooke was just sitting at her house like any ordinary person alone would do. When she sees this show called still missing she sees a picture of a little girl so she felt sad. Until the unexpected happened the little girl with her father, it was she so she called the police and said I was on this show of missing people she was right it was she.
The stories about how this young girl gets put up with her mother. They move to a new town and have to make new friends it's hard for her she's always crying. Until she finds this church group so then she becomes happy again. The church group really helps her cope with her new life. Never gets to see her dad again. She ends up liking a boy at the church group. Figures out whom it is you'll have to read it. I recommend this book to ages 12-any.
Why does Cathy get to decide what constitutes "offensive?".......2005-05-28
Again, Cathy apoints herself public czar or morality and parental dictator. But her definition of "offensive" isn't the guidepost for every reader or parent. If Susan Beth Pfeffer opted to use words Cathy considers offensive in a book with such gripping themes as kidnapping and custodial disputes, she was likely being honest, not vulgar. If a teen is in the midst of or has survived a bitter divorce within her family, she knows the word "Shoot," was NOT authentic vocabulary during that angry struggle. She knows the language Cathy calls "offensive" is often "normal" when it comes to divorce -- something half of all young readers will experience at least once in their pre-adult lives. If Pfeffer's book can help even ONE troubled child understand he or she is not alone in this painful experience, the language is aptly expressed, not offensive. Please ignore Cathy's desire to censor books not just for her own children, but for yours. Please read the book and decide for yourself.
Beware of offensive language.......2005-05-04
A teenage girl who is babysitting happens to see a show on TV that changes her life. The show is about missing children, which she had never watched before. During the program she sees a picture of her dad and feels compelled to call the number on the screen. In a matter of minutes her life changes drastically, but the change also brings about many questions. Is she Amy or Brooke? Who really loves her? What is true? What is untrue?
This book should be for mature readers only because of offensive language.
A unique look at what it means to be a family.......2003-03-25
Susan Beth Pfeffer's Twice Taken carries overtones of Caroline B. Cooney's The Face on the Milk Carton/Whatever Happened to Janie? and Norma Fox Mazer's Taking Terri Mueller, but it also carries a life of its own. The main thing that sets Twice Taken away from the other two books is that it is mostly about what happens after the discovery, not the actually getting to the truth. Brooke finds out very early that her father has kidnapped her and that her mother is still looking for her, the girl they call Amy Michelle Donovan. Pfeffer chooses to focus on what happens after her mother and stepfather take her back to live with them.
Twice Taken is told in the first person, which is fortunate because the reader would be having as big an identity crisis over Brooke/Amy as Brooke does if it were told in third. It's easy to see and understand Brooke's thoughts, but mostly Pfeffer does a good job of making us feel them. Most readers have never been in Brooke's situation, but they can relate strongly to jealous younger half-siblings, feeling left out, or being uncomfortable in a new school or situation.
Brooke goes through all the stages you'd expect of someone in that situation: at first, hatred of everything and everyone; then slowly trying to branch out at school, but failing because her story has been so sensationalized; trying to build a relationship with her half brother Tim, who was born after she was taken, and her half sister Holly, who was just a baby then; and mostly, trying to figure out how she feels about her mother. Hardest is her conflict with her parents: she is angry at the way her mother treats her, hovers, and slanders her father, but at the same time she's mad at her father for taking her and depriving her of the chance to get to know her mother.
One of the most likable characters, aside from Brooke, is her stepfather Mike. He's reasonable, patient, and a sensible stepfather to her, but at the same time his loyalties are of course with Brooke's mother. Tim and Holly are good foils: Holly is angry all the time and Tim is willing to accept his sister. At the same time, Holly's anger is understandable - her sister shows up after 11 years and gets all the attention, presents, a pet kitten, and a canopy bed.
Like Pfeffer's other novels, this one doesn't end happily. Brooke isn't allowed to go back to her father. She's still not comfortable at school, Holly still doesn't like her, and she's still not sure how to get to know her mother. At the same time, there is the final discussion between her and her mother, and the hope that they'll be able to have a relationship one day, one that isn't so forced. The best part is her mother's realization that she will have to accept and like Brooke, and not Amy, the lost child who has been missing for 11 years.
Good Book!.......2001-07-22
I was at a bookfare at my school and I was immediately drawn to this book because of it's title. "Twice Taken". I just had to read the back of the book and so I bought it. I was really satisfied with this book. The author was very good at illustrating details for the reader. I reccommend this book to anyone who likes to read mysteries and thrillers.
