Customer Reviews:
Have had this book since 1997 and love it.......2007-07-05
I am reading this book again.. prob the 5 time and I have used about 3 different colors of hi-liter so far. I recommend it and even used the lesson and guidance to help me with my addiction issues this time around.
First time it was family issues, then 2nd time was work issues, third time was deaths in family and fourth time was post college work issues. Its been there for me everytime and this time along with Tx, I am using it again.
Pat Riley would have made one heck of a military general. .......2007-05-17
He is the ultimate strategist, always thinking ahead and planning every act of inspiration and conversation he might use to channel more out of his players than they were currently giving. In 'The Winner Within', Pat Riley shares his tactics for converting his basketball teams into units with an emphasis on the greater good. The highlights of this book came for me in the following:
* Pat Riley's acceptance of being in the right place at the right time when the Lakers needed a head coach and how preparation added to his own confidence that he could succeed at a high level.
* Riley's view on the strengthening process of one's mentality and how being thrown the wolves can be a very healthy experience.
* Making the LA Lakers a team instead a collection of self-serving, finger-pointing superstars. He mentions tactics he employed on each of his different leaders, including ways to use Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's moody eccentricities as a leadership tool.
* How embracing success hurt the Lakers in the mid-eighties and the ways Riley developed a plan to combat complacency on the team.
* How leaders in any profession must be willing to confront cancerous team members swiftly and thoroughly.
* Riley's methods of using strategic moments of temporary insanity and how this can be highly beneficial to the overall good of the team.
* When to know your time is done and move on, as he did when he left LA for New York in 1990.
* Setting reasonable goals that are both attainable and difficult. For example, his 1992 New York Knicks set the goals of being the most hated team in the league, the most conditioned team in the league, and the most professional team in the league. To a T, they succeeded in meeting all their goals.
Riley is very open and honest in this book. He admits that he knew his Knicks would have zero chance of beating the Bulls in a do-or-die game seven in 1992. He had predicted Jordan would get calls and go to the line, and that Ewing would get into foul trouble quickly. Both of his predictions became eerily true. He admits that you must know your place in the pecking order and follow this format:
#1. From nobody to upstart
#2. From upstart to contender
#3. From contender to winner
#4. From winner to champion
#5. From champion to dynasty
Riley's book is also filled with numerous quotes from histories great minds and leaders. Each quote helps highlight what Riley is trying to emphasize.
I recommend this book to anyone who is or hopes to be a manager in any avenue in life. Riley gives a clear-cut format to achieving goals as a leader.
Championship Inspiration.......2006-10-31
This is a book about how Pat Riley coaches to get out of the individual the Winner Within. There are 12 short chapters in this 271 page book with many quotes from many great individuals throughout history including this one from Sir Winston Churchill: "Success is never final."
Shaq has stated the Riley is the most motivating speaker he has ever heard and after reading this book I think you will get a feel for what he meant. Most of the book focuses on Basketball and the Lakers. But there are some good business principles scattered throughout the book that will inspire you to be the best. Riley lets you into his mind so you can see his thoughts and how he worked to get the most out of his team to bring home the championship. It's a great book that will prove a quick read.
A great inspiration for any coach.......2006-07-17
I am a first year basketball coach and found this book very inspirational. It makes me want to work even harder than I have and set higher standards for myself. Pat Riley is an excellent motivator and role model. I like any coach who is willing to write about his major losses in his career as well as greatest triumphs. A must read for any coach. However, he needs to write a sequel since he won his new title this summer. Go Heat!
Doesn't make the playoffs........2005-08-03
Of the over fifty books on leadership/coaching that I've read, this is by far the least useful. There are anecdotes for basketball fans, but as far as useful ideas on success and leadership there are few. It is the most useless book I've read in the coaching/leadership field (even worse than Coach K's or Dean Smith's).

Book Description
A Caldecott Honor Book by the creators of the beloved Story of Ferdinand
Wee Gillis lives in Scotland. He is an orphan, and he spends half of each year with his mother's people in the lowlands, while the other half finds him in the highlands with his father's kin. Both sides of Gillis's family are eager for him to settle down and adopt their ways. In the lowlands, he is taught to herd cattle, learning how to call them to him in even the heaviest of evening fogs. In the rocky highlands, he stalks stags from outcrop to outcrop, holding his breath so as not to make a sound. Wee Gillis is a quick study, and he soon picks up what his elders can teach him. And yet he is unprepared when the day comes for him to decide, once and for all, whether it will be the lowlands or the highlands that he will call his home.
Robert Lawson and Munro Leaf's classic picture book is a tribute to the powers of the imagination and a triumph of the storyteller's and illustrator's art.

This Book is a TREASURE.......2007-10-13
Seriously, I think a lot of this book. The artwork is wonderful; the story is wonderful. We had to buy this copy because we wore out our first one.
Wee Gillis.......2007-02-15
Another great book by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson. Nice story and great artwork. Recommended if you already own and like Ferdinand.
Wee Gillis is back!.......2007-02-12
So glad it's back...this classic book on how different people can get along. Not just for kids.
a superb book.......2007-01-12
"Wee Gillis" is a classic of children's literature, and this is an excellent new reprint. There is no dustjacket, but the book has a very strong cardboard cover and good quality paper.
The book combines an interesting commentary on the cultures of the Scottish highlands and lowlands with a simple and rather old-fashioned story of how a boy takes his place in the adult world.
The black and white illustrations complement the text beautifully, and almost tell the story on their own.
Find your own place in the world.......2006-10-26
Originally published in 1938, this one is a delight to see back in print thanks to New York Review Books. The Scottish setting is charming and the central message, to be who you are, is important. Not content to be a hunter like his father's family or a farmer like his mother's family, Wee Gillis finds his own place in this world as a bagpiper. Baby boomers will be familiar with Robert Lawson's illustrations from such children's classics as Rabbit Hill, Ben And Me and The Story of Ferdinand, also written by Munro Leaf. I adore this book so much I named my dear and very independent Cairn Terrier puppy Wee Gillis.

Book Description
Famously banned from entering the annual Britain in Bloom competition to give other towns a chance, the "Silver City with the Golden Sands" is one of the UK's most attractive cities. Along with images of Aberdeen's beauty are others chronicling the city's many different facets. Side by side are images of traditional industries, such as fishing and granite-quarrying, and pictures of ways Aberdonians have found to make a living in modern times. For anyone who has connections to Aberdeen, this is truly a must-have album of the sparkling city that nestles between the River Dee and the River Don.

Book Description
It's the city of fireworks and festival, Old Town and New-a place where castle and close rub shoulders with high-tech developments and where wide expanses of parkland are next to closely packed tenements. Auld Reekie or the Athens of the North? Edinburgh is a city of contrasts-a fact reflected in this unique collection of photographs taken over the last century. The Wee Book of Edinburgh is the perfect memento of the city.

Book Description
From one of Denmark's foremost writers, here is his most impressive book to date-a roguishly fantastic adventure story of piracy, slave owners, witch burning, shipwrecks, desert islands, and larger-than-life characters-the largest of which is fourteen-year-old Tom O'Connor, a poor, adventurous, charming liar who lives with his mother and half sister at a tavern on the island of Nevis in 1639. Good and evil, truth and lies, right and wrong tug at this unlikely hero when he rescues a slave from drowning, learns he is prince, loses him, travels the Southern Hemisphere in search of him, and finally brings him home to Cape Verde, hoping for a grand reward. But by the time Tom discovers that the prince is really a fisherman's son, the loss of reward doesn't matter-his adventures have brought him no use for greed, and as he says, "a reckless regard for other people's life and well-being."
Translated from Danish by Tiina Nunnally.
Customer Reviews:
An unenjoyable read -- Not worth the time or effort.......2006-04-16
I honestly thought this book was going to be something of an adventure, but as always it took far too long to get itself to the major point and purpose of the story and main character itself. In the beginning the story highlights the hardships of Tom O'Connor's life working in a inn owned by a pompous Spanish-man, Senor Lopez, who treats his mother and his sister (whom he hates just as much as Lopez, and her in return) like animals to be treated horribly and paid lightly. Tom in turn hates the man and his equally despised by everyone in the Island of Nevis for the Irish Blood that runs through his veins.
He apparently is so used to insults thrown his way because of this that he hardly seems bothered by it anymore. He is also full of contempt because of his lifestyle and his Irish blood, that its hard to like him. In his spare time he rows out to sea and searches for valuable items under water and just when he's having a off day at sea he comes across two "shipwrecked" people, a Spaniard and a slave boy no older than him. He stashes the slave away and tends to the Spaniard around the time a Bishop comes to the inn searching for a seer named Zamora, who scares him into telling him where the seer has gone.
From there the book just becomes one crude tale of obvious hatred and self-hatred for one's self and his situations. I honestly tried to enjoy the book, but in the end it was far too dull and angry for me to complete. Not because of the way the author depicts the time line (1639), nor most of the semi-gritty cruelty and reality of slavery when Tom comes across a Plantation. But because of the anger the character carries and the crude characters he meets along his adventures.
It just was not a pleasing romp to even "skim" through at the least. All in all I hardly enjoyed this book and I cannot recommend it to anyone. If your looking for a book concerning slavery, pirates, aventure, or any of the above, look elsewhere. -- [a 2 out of 5]
A rollicking adventure story for boys.......2004-12-12
This is the story of Tom O'Conner, a 14 year old boy that lives with his mother and half-sister in an inn, run by a not-so-pleasant fellow. Tom is forever seeking his fortune, by venturing out in search of sunken treasure so that he can help his family. However, he finds his fortune not in the shape of gold or jewels, but in the form of a Spanish sailor and an African slave. Or so he thinks. For the slave is actually an African prince, and rich rewards await those who bring him home.
However, things do not exactly go smoothly and in order to obtain this fortune, Tom undertakes many adventures - including fighting sharks, slavery, witch burnings, pirates, shipwreck and many other things besides! Along the way he meets a wide range of characters, ranging from the rather dubiously nicknamed Ramon the pious, to the nastiest pirate of all, CW Bull, charming many of them with his tall tales and polite manner (the rest, for various good reasons, want him dead). The result is not so much an adventure to trade a freed slave for a fortune, but more a story of friendship, courage and above all, how thin the boundaries are between right and wrong.
This is definitely a book aimed at boys, probably teenagers, with a good dose of macabre imagery (the fate of Innocent's scribe being particularly noteworthy) and non-stop action. The writing style seems a little stilted, which quite probably comes from it being translated from Danish, with some conversations making a bizarre diversion partway through, and this is what has lead to my somewhat lower-then-it-deserves rating.
