Book Description
In this well documented global wake-up call, nuclear physicist Jeff Eerkens explores remedies for the impending energy crisis, when oil and natural gas are depleted. Because burning coal worsens the problem ofglobal warming, alternate energy sources must be instituted.
The Nuclear Imperative demonstrates with scientific documentation that solar, wind, and biomass power, while helpful, are incapable of supplying and sustaining the enormous quantities of electricity and heat needed for manufacturing portable synthetic fuels (synfuels) to replace our current use of fossil fuels. Instead, it offers a fresh look at uranium-produced energy as the optimal affordable solution.
Long misunderstood and irrationally feared because of antiquated beliefs by the general public, modern nuclear power generation is safer, cleaner, and essential for solving the future energy shortfall. Using a detailed, scientific approach to dispel common myths,
The Nuclear Imperative shows that uranium fission power is available for 1,500 years as a prime energy source to provide all the worldâs energy needs. Because it takes ten to twenty years to design, test, and build new synfuel-producing reactors and new engines powered by new synfuels, action must be taken soon to prevent a catastrophy thirty years from now when oil runs out.
Customer Reviews:
Superb, a must read.......2006-11-03
The most important decisions that society will ever make will be made in the next 20 years. How do we replace the burning of fossil fuels that has been the main driver for civilization's enormous progress of the last century? This no nonsense book examines all of the foreseeable energy resources that will be available and with impeccable logic, facts, good old common sense and detailed engineering analysis Eerkens peals away the myths and half truths that special interest groups hawk to push their own agendas. It is clear that we must heed Eerkens warning, it is imperative that we act responsibly to protect the future for our children.
Book Description
Native Americans practice some of America's most spiritually profound, historically resilient, and ethically demanding religions. Joel Martin draws his narrative from folk stories, rituals, and even landscapes to trace the development of Native American religion from ancient burial mounds, through interactions with European conquerors and missionaries, and on to the modern-day rebirth of ancient rites and beliefs. The book depicts the major cornerstones of American Indian history and religion--the vast movements for pan-Indian renewal, the formation of the Native American Church in 1919, the passage of the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act of 1990, and key political actions involving sacred sites in the 1980s and '90s. Martin explores the close links between religion and Native American culture and history. Legendary chiefs like Osceola and Tecumseh led their tribes in resistance movements against the European invaders, inspired by prophets like the Shawnee Tenskwatawa and the Mohawk Coocoochee. Catharine Brown, herself a convert, founded a school for Cherokee women and converted dozens of her people to Christianity. Their stories, along with those of dozens of other men and women--from noblewarriors to celebrated authors--are masterfully woven into this vivid, wide-ranging survey of Native American history and religion.

excellent!.......2003-08-03
Betsy Brannon Green has done it again! This book was wonderful. I didn't want to stop reading it. The story is about Sydney Lovell, who after several years of marriage, is devastated when her husband asks her for a divorce. She takes her three children and moves in with her grandmother, but she can't forgive her ex-husband, Craig Cochran, for what he has done. While working as a waitress she meets Cole Brackner, a single, attractive man and develops a friendship. With his help she begins to forgive Craig and heal from the pain she has been experiencing, but soon Cole has problems of his own as he is pressured to sell his property. When he resists, his tires are slashed, horrible rumors emerge about him, and his cattle are poisoned. As he and Sydney come closer to the truth they find themselves fighting forces that are willing to do anything to keep the truth from being known. Betsy Brannon Green has written another amazing book and I urge all who enjoy a good page turner to try it out for themselves.
I love this writer..........2003-03-25
One of my co-workers suggested this book. She told me I was like the main lady character...LOL I am!! It was so much fun to read.

An environmental travelogue that documents the changes in the Great Lakes since the publication of "The Late, Great Lakes."
Customer Reviews:
The Late, Great Lakes are still kicking........2001-09-11
15 years after his journey around the Great Lakes region, recorded in his almost famous book "The Late, Great Lakes", Ashworth made a return trip to review the state of things. "Great Lakes Journey" is an account of this second visit, during which he explores many of the same issues covered in his first book, visits with many of the same people that he interviewed 15 years prior, and tries to draw a bead on the health of the Great Lakes and the Great Lakes region. There are some success stories---many of the hideously polluted areas have improved---as well as variety of new issues that plague the largest source of fresh water in the world. Urban sprawl and the invasion of 'exotic' species are two of the most significant problems that Ashworth uncovers in this very readable, cold-eyed assesment of the life and health of one of the States most important, and most disregarded, natural resources. Highly recommended for anyone interested in environmental issues, Great Lakes ecology, or for anyone passionate about the incomparable Sweetwater Seas.

Book Description
Lord Northbourne (1896-1982) was a man of exceptional vision, who already in the 1940s diagnosed in detail the sickness of modern society as stemming from the severance of its organic links with the wholeness of life. A leading figure in the early organic farming movement, his writings profoundly affected such other pioneers as Sir Albert Howard, Rolf Gardiner, Ehrenfried Pfeiffer, and H. J. Massingham. His path led him on to a profound study of comparative religion, traditional metaphysics, and the science of symbols, which he employed in incisive observations on the character of modern society. His later writings exercised considerable influence on his younger contemporaries E. F. Schumacher and Thomas Merton, and in many ways anticipate the essays of Wendell Berry. The republication of this milestone ecological text will be followed by three volumes of Northbourne's later metaphysical and cultural writings.

Right To The Heart.......2005-06-30
Dr. Land is right on target in how we Americans have all but forfeited our Christian heritage. If we're to ever really see God's hand upon our nation again, there must be personal revival throughout the country. He reflects upon several areas where repentance and renewal must take place.
I'm convinced that he's right about our getting a "vision" of what our great country would look like if indeed God's blessing were truly restored across America. Deeply convicting reading but also filled with practical advice for individuals, churches and communites desiring to see God's hand in our lives.

Customer Reviews:
Soccer drills found here.......2007-09-24
My wife bought this for her youth boys soccer team and found it to be very helpful in setting up drills to keep the boys busy and learning. She played soccer through highschool and still found the pages to be full of helpful ideas.
Worth the price.
Excellent coaching primer for all levels of youth soccer.......2007-09-12
I received a copy of this book as part of a U6/U8 coaching clinic that I attended last fall. The instructor had a lot of praise for the text, and incorporated a lot of the coaching philosophy and the drills into his presentation.
The book is full of good, common-sense coaching advice that's particularly useful for the novice coach, although I think that even seasoned coaches will find some great ideas here.
I've used quite a few of the activities in my practices, and they really do work quite well. The backbone of each and every one of these drills is that they get ALL of your kids involved in practicing. There is nothing here that puts your athletes in enthusiasm-sapping and attention-deficit producing lines. Every drill is carefully designed to keep your kids moving and learning at all times.
The text is clear and well-written and the pictures and illustrations do a good job of supporting the activities. Overall, it's very well-done. I've been coaching for 6 seasons now, and I really wish that I had discovered this book sooner.
Highly recommened, especially for new youth soccer coaches.
Wonderful even for seasoned coaches.......2007-09-06
I've been coaching for at least five years now and this book has some really fantastic drills in it. My under 11 team was cracking up while working hard and that is the best thing to see. This is an especially great book for working with children even younger. I'm enjoying all the drills.
Just Get It.......2007-09-05
I have been coaching youth soccer for about 5 years now after having played from age 4-18. This book truly helped my practices become more fun, developmental and organized for the kids. I love the section that has pre-set practices for different skill sets.
Couldn't be better!.......2007-08-13
I've been coaching my sons team for 2 years now. Under 8, Under 10 and getting ready to begin our 2nd Under 10 season. This book is essential to my success as a coach! Wonderful drills and skill builders that are broken down by skill type and age group. Great directions and diagrams. My favorite part of the book is the way it teaches you how to make a soccer practice plan for each practice. You can pick and choose the drills and games you like in order to customize your practices the way you see fit. This is a great book for any soccer coach. Learn to maximize each and every minute of practice while your players have a blast and actually learn something too!

Excellent Reference.......2003-06-05
Although not the most interesting "read", this is a great reference book for gardening in South Florida. Straight forward without too much fluff. The section on pest control is a little heavy on identifying pests and little light on how to control them but the rest of the book is very clear on the basics. Probably not the best book for an advanced gardener but I highly recommend it for the novice like me who wants the nitty gritty on how to get going in Florida but doesn't care about a fancy looking book.
Very good reference for selecting bedding plants in Florida.......2001-09-22
I thought this was an excellent reference for selecting Florida bedding plants. I wanted a book that had lots of pictures of various plants and told me when and where to plant them. This book does that. It is limited on pest control, but has a good basic section on digging and prepping your bedding areas. It would be a great reference to take with you to the nursery when you are trying to decide which plants to purchase for your beds. It has more color photos for identification of bedding plants than most of the Florida gardening books out there.
Poor.......2000-05-18
I was so dispappointed in the presentation made in this book that I sent it back. The cover and even title give the impression that the book will include photgraphic and descriptive information regarding landscaping. What actually comes across is a very boring, poorly presented reference type of book that simply seems like an elaborate dictionary on various landscape terminology. The photographic connections were especially done poorly; all pictures relating to topics were simply united together in a large section at the back of the book. When a reference is made by an author regarding a specific subject, it is certainly best understood and appreciated by the reader when both are on the same page. It was also misleading in their title reference to Florida plants, shrubs, etc., that there would be direct inclusion of information of those subjects, but all that comes across is very general information relating to the words themselves. I have been working on my own Florida yard area now for over 5 years, enjoying what I have been learning by simple hands-on techniqe and questions to my neighbors. None of my own 26 personal plants were even directly mentioned in the book. Again, possibly some of the topics regarding pests or plant diseases might have been appreciated if the information would have been on the same pages as the related photographs--needing to turn clear to the the back of the book every time was a frustrating way to try and understand the connections.

Book Description
A thirteen-year-old boy does some hard traveling
Calman Pulowitz is an only child whose parents have been sending him to a therapist since he was able to talk. Now a teenager, he has reduced his suffering to insomnia, fainting spells, an addiction to Pepto-Bismol, and a dependence on the Psychic Hotline. But things are going to change, as he's about to travel far away from his home in Boston to Walla Walla, Washington, to meet his pen pal. Out West, he'll encounter Simon, the nine-fingered banjo player; Eleanor, the rosescented bartender; Tank, the fix-it man with an odd speech impediment; and, most important, Rizzy, his bully of a pen pal who greets Calman with a big surprise: she's a girl.
In this debut, readers will meet two brave, quirky, and utterly unforgettable characters who learn that growing up is a lot easier - and more fun - if you can count on a friend.
Customer Reviews:
Kids Dig This Book.......2007-06-21
This is the kind of book you read on a plane and wish you'd had at thirteen. It's funny and sad and cool. It's about being a teenager with whacked out parents that really love you. It's about being over-protected and that's the name of parenting in the 21st century. Most of the joys/traumas of being a kid that I experienced just aren't available to my kids: Camping without adults, disappearing for hours, riding one's bike into forever, breaking limbs, exploring abandoned buildings. We live in a safe protected world. Calman, our main man, gets to go on a summer trip to meet his pen pal who turns out to be a girl. They get to live life outside his safe world and he gets to grow up, and it isn't all fun, but it's all good in the end. It's a life of gritty surprises. Amy Stolls is a good writer and you feel you're in safe hands with this book. You know your teen will read it and roll their eyes at you, and that's good too. It's a book either gender would enjoy equally, a rarity for YA. Give it to your kid. He or she will thank you for it. Kate Gale
An unusual cast of very different characters and potential friends will bring him more awareness of his own life.......2005-08-11
An only child, Calman has been seeing a therapist since he was seven, and is now about to travel from his Boston home to Washington to meet his pen pal. His encounters with an unusual cast of very different characters and potential friends will bring him more awareness of his own life and personality than therapy could ever afford him.
Pushing Open Adolescence.......2005-07-19
Amy Stolls has a strong voice, and in her first novel she manages to muscle her way into her readers' heads. Calman Pulowitz is a teenage Jewish boy with a weak physique and a host of psychosomatic difficulties. His family invests in therapy, he has an addiction to Pepto Bismol, and an attachment to objects. After his pen pal Rizzy invites him to stay out in the rural wops of Walla Walla, Washington, he reluctantly takes part in a series of adventures with his new companion.
Palms to the Ground is not a conventional youth novel - Stolls doesn't leave you with cliff hangers at the end of each chapter, and her characters are rife with idiosyncrasies. But stick with her, because her tone is reminiscent of the regional twang of Carson McCullers, chronicling the trials of the Dickson family with irony, humor, and just a touch of empathy. In fact, the adventures are really just an excuse around which to build episodes of exaggerated chaos, as mothers and children spar, fathers duck their heads, and local characters drop in to drink the house dry.
Stolls is, so the cliché goes, one to watch in the future. She has a keen eye, a deft touch, and a ticklish pen. A little more action may have moved the plot along a little, but when it comes to the nasty confrontation everyone has to face with adolescence she is spot on.
images and emotions abound.......2005-05-05
The characters and descriptions took this 64-year-old reader on a ride through 50 years of time. Ms. Stolls brought me from delight to anger to sympathy and around again. She's a fine wordsmith with a "roll-it-up-a-notch" sense of humor.
Lenore Paddock, Montville, NJ
FUNNY, TOUCHING, FANTASTIC.......2005-04-18
Palms To The Ground is the sort of gem of a novel that will appeal to readers of all ages. I'm 34 and I loved it so much that I've bought copies for the young people in my life and also for my best friend.
Amy Stolls writes with clarity, empathy, and humor. Palms to The Ground makes me wish that she was writing when I was a kid!

Customer Reviews:
Pointless book to a dead OS.......2007-09-27
Since Palm has cancelled the release of Cobalt, and there appears to be no devices that will ever come out with this OS loaded on them, this book is only useful for those folks that like learning how to program vaporware. Like a book for making custom levels in Duke Nukem Forever.
Palm Programming.......2005-07-19
Excellent book ordered before printing and arrived weeks before expected.
Great service, thanks.
Only code, no explanation.......2005-04-03
50% of book contents are code listing, even resource files in xml. The explanation of the code and techniques are inexistent and the code comments are 50% of the total code lines but they are irrelevant, a representative example (page 183):
// CH 7. Display the time
displayTime();
They present one program example that evolves accross the book, and they print the COMPLETE code of the modified files in every chapter. When you take out the unnecesary repetitions the book loses an important percentage of the pages.
I live in Europe and the shipping charges are similar to the cost of the book, if I lived in the USA, I will return the book at once.
Quick start but lots of errors in examples.......2005-03-09
As an experienced programmer, I wanted a book that wouldn't waste my time teaching me C/C++ or explaining event loops in lots of detail. I also wanted comparison between Garnet and Cobalt versions of the Palm OS.
This book does provide some of that information.
It does not provide valid examples. The first code examples are in chapter 3. They claim to build on the Draw application from chapter 2, and assume the reader has details about the event loop from chapter 2. Chapter 2, however, contains neither code nor a description of the event loop used in Palm software. There is no reference to the Draw application in the index, either.
After studying sample code from Palm's web site and trying lots of things in the development environment, I was able to get something that worked.
Other examples mix Garnet and Cobalt veriable types so they wouldn't compile on either system or contain other errors that prevent them from compiling.
A less-experienced programmer would probably give up on page 25 where the text tells the reader to modify a resource file that does not exist. Such a programmer would probably rate the book with one star.
I have not completed the book yet although I intend to do so. I felt compelled to warn other readers about its inaccuracies.
A CD or web site (with working examples!) would be useful to copy and paste tutorial information instead of requiring lots of typing.

Palm OS Programming: The Developer's Guide, 2nd Edition
ASIN: 0072121521 |
Amazon.com
There's money to be made in developing applications for the Palm OS. As 3Com sells more of its devices, and licensees like Handspring add to the Palm OS universe, there's an ever-growing number of people who want to use their handheld computers to make their lives easier. By reading Palm OS Programming from the Ground Up, you can learn how to satisfy this market demand with quality software. Because author Robert Mykland is so liberal in sharing his ideas and exhibits such talent in communicating them effectively, you'll probably also enjoy the learning process.
Mykland takes care to explain every aspect of the programs he includes in this book, even going so far as to discuss what event-driven interfaces are and what the most elementary C statements do. Sometimes he includes really long code listings without much explanatory commentary in the immediate context, but you're usually able to figure out what he's doing by referring back to earlier sections. As you work through the explanations and exercises, you'll develop a solid understanding of how the Palm OS takes in, processes, and displays information. Experienced C developers won't find this book overly elementary, though, as Mykland digs fairly deep into the Palm OS's capabilities (including a considerable bit about its database format). A concluding section on tricks you can use to minimize bugs and speed the development process is particularly valuable. --David Wall
Topics covered: Developing software for 3Com's Palm OS for handheld computers and means of collecting, storing, and manipulating data. Other topics have to do with designing attractive user interfaces, using Palm OS development tools (especially MetroWerks CodeWarrior 6), databases, and troubleshooting.
Book Description
Learn to build custom applications for all models of Palm devices, including Palm Computing, Handspring, Symbol, and TRG Pro devices with this soup-to-nuts resource. Add user interface elements, including buttons, triggers, menus, scrollbars, and more. Find out how to use CodeWarrior to program Palm applications quickly and easily.

Pretty much outdated by now ... errors and bugs.......2004-01-24
The book is pretty much outdated by now. The included version of codewarrior only works with Palm OS 3.5 while 4.1 is out. It supports debugging only through the serial interface, many new palms use USB, which will mean you'll need to get a serial to usb or use the emulator. The starter application didn't work from first time. I'm even pretty much reluctant to continue reading. Requires putting the palm into console mode with special key combination that didn't work for me. I have Palm Zire, with Palm OS 4.1, which is a resonable development platform I suppose.
Great book on Palm OS Programming.......2002-08-26
I have some experience with C++. I felt the sample applications in this book were easier to understand and follow than the more complicated librarian example application in the Palm OS Bible by Glenn Brown (though it is a good book also). Granted this book does have problems with the code, and is based on an older version of Palm, the problems were easily worked through with the Palm provided documentation from the Palm website. One drawback is that the book does focus on using the CodeWarrior product, but again with a little effort, the samples can be easily ported to using the free PRC-Tools/GCC software. Actually if the Palm OS Bible and this book were merged, it would make a really great reference.

Not a book for the novice!.......2002-05-07
I saw this at the local bookstore and figured it would be useful. I am relatively inexperienced with C, and I know nothing of C++. I thought this book would be a good introduction to Palm programming. It is difficult to understand as it was not written for a novice (contrary to the claims on the cover).

Book Description
The largest Marine Corps base in history, the Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Center at Twentynine Palms is located on 930 square miles of harsh terrain, nearly the size of Rhode Island, in southern San Bernardino County. An army base for training glider pilots at the outset of World War II, the former navy facility was taken over by the corps in 1952 during the Korean War and the advent of the cold war. The base provided adequate space and ranges to test new artillery and missile technology and was ideal for the largescale training of ground forces. In the 21st century, every U.S. Marine does a stint at Twentynine Palms because the climate, terrain, and remote location simulate many international hot spots of world strife. The marines have continually upgraded and expanded the Twentynine Palms facilities as daily maneuvers involve transports, tanks, artillery, and aircraft, particularly at the Expeditionary Air Field.
