Book Description
The first of its kind, this spectacularly illustrated book is the only complete guide to the wildlife and natural history of the vast and beautiful Antarctic region.
Covering the Antarctic continent, the southern ocean, and the subantarctic islands, this guide illustrates all of the region's breeding birds and marine mammals with stunning color photographs. In addition to the color plates, it features distribution maps and up-to-date species accounts expertly detailing abundance, seasonal status, and conservation prospects. The volume also covers numerous nonbreeding species, migrants, and vagrants.
Regional chapters describe all of the subantarctic islands, in addition to most regularly visited sites in Antarctica, and are accompanied by maps of each area and photographs of each locale. These chapters present detailed information on geography, climate, geology, general ecology, and flora. They also address conservation efforts--past, present, and planned. The book concludes with practical information about visiting the area, including details on the best-available landing sites and notes on seasonal weather conditions.
This is an indispensable companion for a trip far south, as well as an informative volume for anyone interested in the Antarctic region's remarkable, occasionally strange, and frequently beautiful animals.
- Features 35 color plates and over 600 color photographs
- Illustrates and maps the distribution of all of the region's breeding birds and marine mammals
- Includes information on many non-breeders, migrants, and vagrants
- Features expert text reflecting recent advances in taxonomy

Spectacular.......2007-04-07
I brought this book to the Antarctic peninsula with me, only to find a copy already aboard ship. It was still worth carrying.
Yes, good photos, but much better for the information. Details on identifying all sorts of animals, including the territories they can be found in at various times of the year, changes in appearance during the year and even a rather comical phonetic approximation of the sounds they might make.
I bought a lot of books in my year prep for this trip. This was one of the best. Must owning for anyone going south of 50 degrees.
Very Well Designed and Informative.......2006-07-01
Lot of great pictures and very informative articles. This book will definitely be with my camara and computer during my trip to Antarctica.
Fine book beautifully produced!.......2005-01-01
Anyone who has read my other reviews will know that I don't give stars easily but I can find no reason even to deduct a single star from this book. Whether you have been, are going or just want to dream of going this is the book for you. As its title indicates, its prime purpose is to describe the wildlife, and it gives top billing to the birds - all in a level of detail which should satisfy the most demanding birder, but which the average interested amateur naturalist should also find interesting. The authors have sensibly provided a fine set of plates rather than relying on photos as the main identification aid. There are however many good photos as well - this use of both "media" is, as far as my experience goes, unusual in bird books which tend to opt for one or the other when in fact each has its advantages and disadvantages. The section on marine mammals is of a similar quality. Another section comprehensively describes each of the regions (including Sub-Antarctic islands all the way up to Tristan) with information which makes the book useful as a "travel guide" for planning and accompanying a trip (though it is really too fine a book to get damaged in use!). In addition there are good (if relatively short) sections on geology, climate, history, botany etc etc - in fact on just about any relevant subject you could think of. Indeed if you could only have 1 book on the Antarctic this is a very good candidate - and at a very good price!

David Wallechinsky continues with a gold-medal perfomance that once again combines comprehensive results, statistics and records with photographs and the stories behind the events. Completely updated, it includes the top eight finishers in every Olympic event from the inaugural Winter Games in 1924 through the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Reference Book.......2007-08-09
This is the most complste up-to-date book of Winter Olympic information that I have found. Excellent item for anyone interested in the facts and figures behind the Winter Games
Essential.......2006-02-03
If the TV coverage is going to be all fluff and you need to know some vital stats about the last time a Frenchman won a speed skating gold medal, where are you going to turn. Well here of course!
Book Description
Operational oversights and the fortunes of war left a larger number of German defences intact on this crucial beach, making for the most difficult of all the battles on June 6, 1944. All of the units, events and personalities of the Omaha landing are covered in full detail, backed up with numerous photographs, maps, suggestions for further reading and a guide to touring the battlefield sites as they are today.
Customer Reviews:
Barely adequate Omaha book.......2007-02-15
I don't know what happened here, the author Tim Kilvert-Jones penned the truly excellent Sword Beach edition of the Battleground Europe series, and I bought this expecting it to be as good. Sadly I was wrong, this is frankly a very disappointing book. Firstly there are errors in the text - two photos of the German bunker at WN65 are labelled WN64, and a full page photo of troops onboard ship was taken off the other American beach Utah, and there is a modern picture of the lane leading to where the guns were inland from Pointe du Hoc - fine except it's the wrong lane. Secondly the battlefield tour unlike the highly detailed routes in other books in the series is very very basic - consisting of only 5 stands. The text fails to mention interesting places to stop and visit like the Dog White Sector and WN60 above Fox Red, and really just points out the monuments. Compared to the author's Sword beach book, this was a major let down for me.
Finally, the text section of the book before the battlefield guide part, is frankly "dull as dishwater". 50 pages is devoted to the overall planning of Overlord, which I would propose is not something the average buyer of this book would be looking for, as it is covered in hundreds of general D-Day books. For the actual Omaha beach portion, it used the same old standard US National Archive photos interspersed with maybe half a dozen brief veteran's accounts collected by the author. Also the text could have done with being broken down into clearly defined chapters relating to perhaps each beach sector or exit. All in all I'll stick with the word "disappointing."
I wonder if the publisher reduced the authors original manuscript to fit the format of the book?
Book Description
This collection of critical essays examines distinctive moments of the Americas Society's visual art program and its impact on the formation of a Latin American market in the United States. Founded in 1965, the Americas Society has played a pivotal role in Latin American art, from Pre-Colombian to modernism.
The book brings together a cross-cultural group of art historians and curators, including Alexander Alberro, Alexander Apó stal, Beverly Adams, Cecilia Brunson, Luis Camnitzer, Thomas Cummins, Andrea Giunta, Nicolás Guagnini, Paulo Herkenhoff, Anna Indych-Lopez, Luis Perez Oramas, John Pruitt, Mary Scheider Enriquez, and Sofía Sanabrais who discuss the relevance of the institution's intricate relationships with art, economics, and politics.
Essays address the emergence of site-specific practices such as Gego's Reticulárea and neo-avant-garde manifestations such as the Fashion Show Poetry Event conceived by E. Costa, J. Perrault, and H. Wiener; Marta Minujin's happenings; Michael Snow's photographs; David Siqueiros' monographic show; and the notion of landscape in the Western Hemisphere, among other significant topics. A Principality of Its Own explores the achievements, frictions, and experiments that modeled the institution from the Cold War to the present.

Book Description
Fourteen-year old Maria Cecilia Gonzales is a dreamer. Her books carry her far away, beyond the purple and blue mountains of the farm community she lives in-to high school and then on to a job in the big city.
As Cecilia struggles to fulfill her goals, she experiences a deep appreciation for her family and the first tender feelings of romantic love.
Susan and Denise Gonzales Abraham have woven the story of Cecilia's dreams into the months of the year, the land and the crops, and the routine life on a farm.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating historical vignette.......2005-02-01
This story sets the reader inside the mind of 14-year-old Cecilia in a day and place most readers will find unfamiliar. The details of daily life in this rural community are told in a way that make one yearn for that simpler time. But the over-all story of a family big on love and closeness and a young girl determined to find her own way is universal. A very enjoyable book -- loved the proverbs!
Great book for young girls.......2005-01-09
"Cecilia's Year" is a great story for young girls. Cecilia is a really good role model--her goals are to graduate from high school and get a job to help her family. She loves to read. This book also exposes kids to what life was like on farms when America was a rural country. Full of traditional family values plus lots of Spanish for people who know both languages. Also has a little romance. Young girls ages 11-15 will love it. Great gift.
A young adult novel about the dreams of a Latina girl .......2005-01-03
Cecilia's Year is a young adult novel about the dreams of a Latina girl living in rural New Mexico. She dreams of traveling far beyond her farm community, to experience high school and a job in the big city she knows through books, yet her mother feels her highest goal in life should be to run a home, cook, sew, and raise children. Written as a tribute to the author's mother, Cecilia's Year explores the tribulations of growing up and determining one's own destiny, in a heartfelt manner sure to resonate with anyone striving to find their place in the world.
Moving story set ..........2004-11-25
Moving story set in a small New Mexican farming community during the 1930's in which 14-year-old Cecilia, who's a top student and avid reader, wants to go to high school, college, and work in a city; however, her old-fashioned mother feels that she should prepare herself to run a home. (M) I loved the way the Abrahams wove Cecilia's story into the months of the year, and the sprinkling of Spanish throughout added flavor. Cecilia's family may have been poor financially, but it was rich in love.

The Complete Poetry: A Bilingual Edition
ASIN: 0195124553 |
Book Description
Here is the first anthology to present a full range of multilingual poetries from Latin America, covering over 500 years of a poetic tradition as varied, robust, and vividly imaginative as any in the world. Editors Cecilia Vicuna and Ernesto Livon-Grosman present a fresh and expansive selection of Latin American poetry, from the indigenous responses to the European conquest, through early feminist poetry of the 19th century, the early 20th century "Modernismo" and "Vanguardia" movements, later revolutionary and liberation poetry of the 1960s, right up to the experimental, visual and oral poetries being written and performed today. Here readers will find several types of poetry typically overlooked in major anthologies, such as works written or chanted in their native languages, the vibrant mestizo (mixed) creations derived from the rich matrix of spoken language in Latin America, and even the mysterious verses written in made-up languages. In addition to the giants of Latin American poetry, such as Cesar Vallejo, Vicente Huidobro, Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz, Haroldo and Augusto de Campos, and Gabriela Mistral, the editors have included a selection of vital but lesser known poets such as Pablo de Rohka, Blanca Varela, and Cecilia Meireles, as well as previously untranslated works by Simon Rodriguez, Bartolome Hidalgo, Oliverio Girondo, Rosa Araneda, and many others. In all, the anthology presents more than 120 poets, many in new translations-by poets such as Jerome Rothengerg, W.S. Merwin, and Forrest Gander-specially commissioned for this anthology, and each accompanied by a biographical note. The book features both English and original language versions of the poems, a full bibliography, and an introduction by the editors. Sure to stand as the definitive anthology for decades to come, The Oxford Book of Latin American Poetry remaps the territory, offering new ways of looking at a poetry as diverse and complex as Latin America itself.

Product Description
Jax, the friendly bat, found himself with no place to sleep and finds a nice cap to nap on. Unfortunately, it belongs to Dan and Dan wants it back. Dan tries in vain to wake the sleeping bat, but is unsuccessful. Children will love what happens next. Beginner readers, early readers, beginning phonics books. This book was designed for students who have learned their ABCs and have just started blending two sounds. The Cap was written with only three letter words making it more possible to get through a word, then the sentence and the entire book. We haven t added an S to any of the words nor have we introduced any other words that are not in accordance with the first step in phonics (i.e. short vowel sounds, etc. only) other than some small basic sight words. Most pages have only one sentence per page and only rarely have two, but never three. This makes it so much easier for any beginner reader to finish a page, a book or more books and therefore more chance of getting that wonderful feeling of accomplishment. The entire set has only short vowel sounds (except for sight words, used sparingly) decreasing chances of the reader getting confused with unfamiliar new sounds or blends. Each book concentrates on only one vowel sound at a time because a beginner reader can be easily confused by the similarity in each of the short vowel sounds. Each book uses that particular vowel repeatedly and in enough different words so that the reader can gain more certainty with that sound without being confused by other vowel sounds entering in. Beautifully illustrated to capture and hold the reader s attention. A beginner reader will be more likely to read and finish a book that interests them. The first set concentrates on the short A vowel sound and includes Nat and Tab, The Map, The Cap and Sam and Val.
Customer Reviews:
LOVE this book, and the whole series.......2007-09-23
My tag line says it all. This series of books blows away the competition (Bob books, Primary phonics). The books are short, funny, and very colorful and full of life. While being a kindergarten teachers aid at a private school I saw the frustration 5 year olds go through with other books. My hats off to the author for finally creating something 3,4 and 5 year old beginning readers would be interested in reading while not being overwhelmed. I hope there are going to be some workbooks and other products added to this line so as to have a fully functioning "teach how to read" system.
highly recommended for beginning readers.......2007-09-19
My daughter just loves these books by Cecilia LeBaron. The illustrations are especially bright and well thought out, and keep my daughter interested page after page. Highly recommended for beginning readers.
a book my 4 year old can actually read by herself!.......2007-08-31
There are millions of books out there that my child couldn't read - that I read to her. We did a lot of that because those kinds of books are easy to find and they are great - it's great to read to your kids. But what I had trouble finding was a book SHE could read herself. She was just learning her letter sounds and totally ready. I found the Bob Books and they were OK except that the illustrations were black and white stick figures and there wasn't much of a story there, so my daughter just wasn't all that interested. Anyway, so a couple weeks ago I found this First Step Phonics series. My daughter loves them because they are so colorful and she laughs at the stories. They are great and they have really helped her to read and gain confidence in her abilites.
