Book Description
More than one third of New Mexico is public land holding huge amounts of mineralogical treasure. Find unusual mineral displays, fossils, jasper, agate, petrified wood, and more obsidian than one rockhound could collect in a lifetime. The array and quality of material found in New Mexico are almost mind boggling. The Rockhound's Guide to New Mexico describes 75 of the state's best rockhounding sites, covering the popular and commercial sites as well as numerous little-known areas. This handy guide describes where and how to collect specimens, includes maps and directions to each site, and provides recommendations for accommodations, camping, and other special attractions. The Rockhound's Guide to New Mexico offers a complete introduction to the many-faceted hobby and is an outstanding guide and sourcebook.

Rockhounds Guide to New Mexico.......2007-09-04
A well written book and it's obvious the author is familiar with New Mexico and with her subject. I especially like the simple figure she uses in each area to show what part of New Mexico she's talking about. She uses a small New Mexico outline with a little mine symbol to indicate quickly where in the state the site is located. I recommend this book to rockhounds.
Good, But Getting Dated.......2007-02-17
I essentially agree with the previous reviewer. We live in Albuquerque, and my son wanted to start rockhounding, so we used this book to get us going in January, 2007. Unfortunately, the first site we tried (one of those near the city and close to I40, of course) did not appear to be accessible any longer. The directions were fairly good, but the place we were to get off the paved road had a sturdy fence across it and signage that indicated it was not open to the general public, which was not what the book said (presumably becuase it was not like this in 1995). We decided to try a different site from the book that was south of the city and much farther from an interstate. In this case, the directions took us right to a good area, and we spent the last hour before sundown finding petrified wood, jasper, and a whole mess of other things that we have not gotten around to identifying, but sure turned out nicely after going through the tumble-polishing process.
In short, take care assuming the access and conditions have not changed substantially in the 12 years since this was published. One always has to take care not to trespass, but don't rely on the book to tell you if you need permission. Other than that, the more general information about areas to find certain things is still good - though you might have to go farther off the beaten path to find them on the surface now.
I also agree that any future editions that include GPS information would be very helpful.
2003 summer review.......2003-07-10
I enjoyed reading this book the author has put a good amount of time and effort in the collection of collecting sites. I like the format used including the best time of the year to collect. In the southwest it does get really really hot in the summer. The elevation is also important for people with mid winter cabin fever. I used that data to successfully collect petrified wood in Cuba in January. The forward introduction is important to read for people not used to living and hiking in New Mexico. I have given this book a three star rating based mainly on it's age. It's been around since 1995. that means that the site data is eight years old. I found that the sites near big cities like Albuquerque tended to be picked over or even worse closed to collecting. All of the west has had a population boom and New Mexico is no exception. the sites near smaller towns were fairly well intact. If you are going to use this book or any other guide I would check with local rock shops before traveling any distance to a new site. If the author or the published ever reads this review I would like to suggest that in the site location that they include the GPS data for main turn - offs and the initial starting points for collecting. In the case of this book eight years is a long time for forest service roads to stay intact or new ones created. I also use Mapping software on my PC to pull up topo and aerial maps of the area. I would also suggest a notation on every site listing the date when it was visited.

gem trails new mexico.......2005-11-04
I have used this book for several trips and have found the directions clear. I am a fairly new collector yet I have found all but 2 sites Most of the sites are eazy to get to and highly productive
Gem Trail of New Mexico.......2005-08-17
This book is awful unless you really know what you are looking for, and have a good sense of geology. Just as an example, the author provides information on "candy rock" rhyolite near Truth or Consequences. If you take the directions in the book, you will end up at the end of a torn up road and a wash, with no real clue as to where you should go from there. I took several backroads which required a heavy-duty 4WD, and finally found some rhyolite. This book would be much more useful if the maps and directions were up to date, and if every description of a gem/mineral had a picture of the site you are supposed to be looking for, and a picture of the mineral in question. Don't buy this book if you are a novice, it will only discourage you.
Book Description
It has been said that mineral and rock collecting is one of the most popular hobbies throughout the world and one that can be very rewarding and pleasurable for both the serious collector and for the weekend amateur. This guide was compiled to spread the collecting word and to share the localities in the "Land of Enchantment." It has a detailed listing of collectable New Mexico minerals, agates and petrified wood and includes over 125 collecting sites and how to get to them as well as 32 county maps indicating collecting locations. The authors have also noted access problems, such as private property, government lands and the necessity for four-wheel drive vehicles, and they have provided the reader with collecting and safety tips. The listings are divided by counties, then localities with the rocks and minerals that can be collected there. There is also a cross-referenced index of localities, maps and minerals.
Customer Reviews:
Very Outdated .......2005-10-19
This book is very outdated. It does have maps but they are not detailed. The directions to sites are humorous to say the least. A good example is on page 30 the directions say take route 60 west 4 miles on your right you will see a tree turn on the second dirt road. One can only guess how many trees have grown since the publishing of this book. There are only 3 color pages in this book to identify what you are looking for.

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful book.......2007-10-03
This is a good adjunct to the "Triathletes Training Bible". She works with Friel's training concepts and adds meat to them with specific daily/weekly work out plans. She has specific plans for various distances (sprint, olympic, 1/2 and full Ironman), events (Tri and Duo), and various preparation time periods (12 weeks to 6 months to full year). I think she also incorporates some of the efficiency techniques suggested in Niles "Time Saving Training" and mentions his book as a good resource. It's a well written and interesting book with lots of good info and help in laying out your training and establishing a workable long term plan.
Training Plans for Multisport Athletes: Your Essential Guide to Triathlon, Duathlon, XTERRA, Ironman, and Endurance Racing .......2007-09-13
I was looking for a comprehensive training plan for one year, most books will offer a 12-16 week program. This book delivered the full plan, and I have used it as a beginner triathlete to prepare for multiple sprint and olympic distance races. The nutrition chapter is also excellent.
Finally, a book with easy to follow training plans.......2007-06-22
I've bought a few triathlon training books in my day, and most of them are just full of theory, scientific jargon and a lot of technical nonsense. This book, however, lists everything in an easy to follow fashion, from proper nutrition to how your body type will react to training. And the best thing about this book are the endless training plans that it includes (from sprint to full Ironman), for those who are just starting out to those who have done this for a while and just want to get faster. Plus it lists training for Xterra-type races and duathlons as well, which I definitely want to participate in. I love it!
Excellent training source.......2007-06-09
I bought this book to help with my half-ironman training. It's excellent for all different triathalons!!! Wonderfully written with a ton of information.
This book packs in a lot of information..........2007-05-30
In her book, Training Plans for Multisport Athletes, Gale Bernhardt offers great tips, instruction, and structured training plans that cover many multisport distances. As a reader will note, Gale is a disciple of and now contemporary to Joe Friel; so, the owner of Friel's "Bible" will feel instantly at ease reading and understanding Gale's perspective on preparing for multisport competition.
At the same time, a complete neophyte could pick up this book and quickly get up to speed on his/her journey down the multisport path. Gale's writing style is easy to understand and the paths she lays out vis a vis her plans are easy to follow.
This is a great book that will benefit new multisport participants as well as seasoned veterans.
Book Description
What is the best time of year to go to Yosemite? Where should we stay
and eat? What is the best way to spot wildlife? Can we bring our skateboards? The answers to these and a myriad other questions about Yosemite National Park appear on the clearly organized, informative, and fun-filled pages of Pomegranate's The Yosemite Handbook. The fruit of collaboration between noted Bay Area cartoonist Phil Frank and his wife Susan, The Handbook is drawn and elaborated from the National Park Service's own "100+ Common Visitor Questions & Answers"--an internal resource used to train park rangers and staff. Organized topically, the book gives directions to the park, summarizes activities to enjoy in all seasons, describes the flora and fauna one can observe there, and shares the rules and history of the park. The Yosemite Handbook also includes a handy resource section at the end featuring a telephone directory, campsite reservation form, and checklist for campers.
Paperbound book, 208 pages, original cartoon on almost every page, size: 5 5/8 x 8 5/8".
Customer Reviews:
It's a really big FAQ.......2002-11-18
The way the books of this series work is that they took a guide for new rangers in Yosemite with the 100 or so most frequently asked questions, and wrote their own answers for each park. It's a great format because it makes for easy reading beforehand, but it's also quick as a reference when you're there because they're arranged in an intelligent order. There's also a huge reference section at the end with lists, copies of permit forms, and so forth. So the thing to do is read the FAQ before you leave but bring the book and refer to it once you're there.
I've been to Yosemite four or five times since I've purchased this book, and still find it useful. Partially this is because if you go in different seasons there are different things to see, and sometimes you just want a pizza and that's in there too (Camp Curry has good pizza, if anybody's curious).
Don't go to Yosemite without Bruinhilda!.......2001-02-25
I already had a couple of trips to Yosemite under my belt before buying this book in anticipation of a third, but I still found it very useful. Much of the information you will want at hand before and during your trip is conveniently compiled in this book, and it is presented in a charming and amusing way. (Bruinhilda, your host, is a cartoon bear.) History, hiking, flora, fauna, lodging, feeding, even five pages of telephone numbers you may need, are all there. The price of this book will be a pittance compared to the total cost of your trip to Yosemite, and it will help you to get the most out of your visit. I particularly recommend this book to people who aren't planning a trip to Yosemite-maybe it will encourage you to go (and to respect and care for the park when you do)!
A FUN AND HUMOROUS WAY TO LOOK AT YOSEMITE CAMPING AND ITS T.......2000-06-24
This is THE A-Z Yosemite guild, with info ranging from how long it takes to get there to what restaurants will best suit your needs and not to say, your price bracket. This guide will interest the most unenthusiastic of readers. It gives you a very lighthearted look at camping (the way it was intended to be) and detailed insider information of Yosemite with a side of humor narriated by an animated bear. The animation makes it all the more enjoyable, as it pokes fun of the stereotypical tourist and his civilized quirks. The guide uses a helpful Q&A format. It also provides an informative hiking graph of strenuosity and milage along with a graph of campgrounds and their amenities. I consider it the Yosemite bible of sorts and a must have for first time visitors!
An easy-to-read, amusing guide book........1999-06-30
This book may be better than Steve Medley's "Guidebook to Yosemite National Park" because of its question and answer format. The cartoons are excellent, especially if you're a fan of "Farley" as I am...it's very easy to read and information is easily accessible, also it's about as up-to-date as you can possibly get. My husband and I were married in Yosemite in September of '98, and sent this book around to the invitees who had never been to our beautiful park. The book got rave reviews from all.
I would recommend this book, along with the Jeffrey P. Schaffer book "Yosemite National Park" (which I would also give 5 stars) as "Must-haves" when visiting Yosemite. The "Yosemite Handbook" is especially good for people who are bringing children, and plan to spend the majority of their time in the Valley...can't say enough good things about this book!

Customer Reviews:
Extremely Basic.......2006-07-16
This is an OK book for a very broad overview of Yosemite, but is not very useful for specific information or recommendations.
It has a lot of general information, so might be good if you are in the extreme early stages of planning your trip, but is not very useful once you get there. For example, there is lots of listings of different accomadations at each of the park entrances, but that is of minimal help if you already have your hotel booked. There is very little information on hikes and sites to see, but there are many other better sources for that type of information.
A Catchy -- and Misleading -- Title.......2006-07-04
There is nothing really wrong with this book, except that it claims to be something that it isn't. If the title had been "A Pretty Good Travel Guide to Yosemite" it would have been far more descriptive. However, it claims to be an "Insider's Guide." That's nonsense. What is frustrating is that anyone who is familiar with Yosemite and has a guide or two would never buy "A Pretty Good Travel Guide to Yosemite." They might, however, by an "Insider's Guide" thinking that there would be information not generally available. I felt cheated by this book -- it clearly is not written by an insider; there is nothing here not already covered elsewhere.
Informative for your Yosemite trip.......2005-04-25
We used this book for a trip we took in the spring to Yosemite--I've been to Yosemite in all four seasons, and spring is definitely the best time to go--and were able to get much out of it. It's packed with information that, we found, to be quite accurate, though it really ought to be updated annually. But if you're looking for good pictures of the park, this is not the guide for you. (Most of the photos displayed throughout are black and white and really are not the best. Even the cover of Yosemite Falls is weak, completely missing the beautiful shot of both the upper and lower falls--how could this be missed? So if you want quality photos, go elsewhere.) I haven't seen all other books on Yosemite, but this one seemed to be popular, as it is even sold in gift shops in Yosemite Valley. I just don't think you will go wrong with this one.
Not very informative.......2005-02-07
This book has well-written descriptions of the scenery, but it really doesn't have any planning information that you couldn't find from the internet. It is helpful if you want to know which turnoff points to take for certain views.
The best!.......2004-04-09
One of the best, most informative books out there on Yosemite (and trust me, I've looked at a few). Well laid out, interesting and easy to use. You won't be disappointed.

Compelling YA novel.......2002-11-06
The author knows her setting, small town Missouri, early 1900's. She also knows children and school relationships. I found her characterization and description captivating. Charlotte, known as Sissy by her loving family, is consistently crafted as the unpopular girl seeking to be accepted by the in- group, a classic problem. Her relationship with her kind brother and again with Jesse, her unwilling friend who has come on the orphan train to find a home, shows her sensitive goodness of heart. Sissy's mother is real. The story takes a menacing turn when secrets are revealed about the orphan girl, Jesse. What follows is a girl's unfailing love of a friend and complete honesty. I found myself choking up as I read Sissy's words, "You don't have to understand people to love them," and from then to the complete ending, my throat was tight with unspent tears. This book is a must for teens who feel deeply, and are trying to untangle their lives.
Charlotte's Choice--a well-told important story.......2001-10-31
Charlotte's Choice is a story that deals tastefully with an on-going evil. The gently unfolding plot keeps the reader turning pages as home-town girl Charlotte Matthews reluctantly becomes friends with newcomer/orphan Jesse Irwin. Jesse thrives on the acceptance and love surrounding her in Charlotte's family circle. Yet her past--anything-goes survival on the streets of New York--sets a stage where Jesse chooses to relive that past rather than jeopardize the stability of the Matthews family.
Charlotte's simple understanding of life is shattered when Jesse becomes victimized by a cruel man. Eventually, Charlotte must choose whether or not to betray her best friend's confidence.
As the jacket cover denotes, "The story's unflinching ending, which is neither entirely tragic nor entirely happy, deepens the credibility, power, and contemporary relevance of CHARLOTTE'S CHOICE."
