    Book Description

With his phenomenal photographs of the five great predators of the African bush—lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and crocodiles—Mark Ross takes the reader on a wild safari. He shares his unparalleled knowledge and in-depth insight into the morphology, behaviors, daily activities, and livelihoods of the large carnivores that prowl the plains, woodlands, and rivers of Africa.

Along with a removable, fold-out guide containing a predator “cheat sheet” of various traits and statistics as well as tips on how to best observe and photograph the animals, Predator overflows with information that both enlightens the reader and dispels popular misconceptions. Compelling and sometimes violent, RossÂ's text and images capture the true life-and-death scenarios that are played out every day against the backdrop of the magnificent African landscape.

4 out of 5 stars Predator Calling by Gerry Blair.......2000-04-04

Very well written and gives a plethera of details and information on how to be successful at calling in predators. My success went up several fold after reading and following Mr Blairs recommendations, he obviously has a lot of experience and the ability to relate those to the reader well, along with his wry mirth. The book contains information on coyotes, bobcats, cougar, bear, and some of the smaller predators. A must read book for the varmint hunter or anyone who would like to call in predators just for watching. Highly recommend this book.

            Book Description

A wildlife adventure set amid North America's last uninterrupted wolf-bison predator-prey cycle.

Carbyn's tale is an adventurous first-person narrative of a scientist in one of the most remote places on earth—Wood Buffalo National Park in northwestern Canada—studying the only remaining uninterrupted predator-prey relationship of wolves and bison. As remote as the park is, however, the long reach of human civilization is everywhere to be found. An odd collaboration of ranchers, government officials and conservation groups propose that all the bison be killed because they harbor diseases such as tuberculosis, brucellosis, and anthrax. The threat to cattle is the primary mover, but some conservationists have dreams of a "pure herd" and want to start over. Carbyn sees it differently, always basing his opinions in science, but also realizing that the bison are part of the long cultural heritage of Canada's native peoples. He expertly navigates through these emotional debates, exploring their twists and turns with insight and compassion. 17 b/w photographs, 2 maps.

            4 out of 5 stars Buffalo Wolf.......2004-12-08

Powerful real life adventures of a biologist working one on one with bison and wolves in the north. If you're wondering what goes on behind the scenes of those nature documentaries this is the book. Not for the faint of heart though. Makes you feel like rooting for the beleagured bison to once, just once, get revenge on the wolf. In the end however, it turns out that humanity is more of a problem than the wolves. Big interests with agri-agendas want to destroy this particular bison herd. I liked the book's no nonsense approach to the "people problems" and behind the scenes politics.

            4 out of 5 stars A Sense of Place.......2004-09-04

Lu Carbyn's book presents a totally new perspective on wolves, bison, and wildlife management and research. His recounting of his time in the field, his personal observations, the politics and the bureaucracy interwoven with the science he tries to hold to is honest and revealing. His love for the land he returns to time after time shines through most of all. If you are looking for a "wolf book" that is personal and thought-provoking, Mr. Carbyn's THE BUFFALO WOLF: PREDATORS, PREY, AND THE POLITICS OF NATURE is one you will want to read.

5 out of 5 stars The Buffalo Wolf.......2004-04-30

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever heard a wolf howl or to anyone who has ever dreamed of hearing a wolf howl! Lu Carbyn is a man of science who writes with a poet's skill. His knowledge paired with his compassion takes us to the mysterious and ever-changing world of the Buffalo Wolf National Park, one of our world's treasures. The predator/prey interactions, the politics of wildlife management, the basic and sometimes cruel ways of nature -- Lu presents these issues and challenges us to ask the question, "How much management is too much?" Truly a spectacular book!

                  Customer Reviews:

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-08-15

I have read this book 3 times, as there is so much great information presented. Another book to underline key phrases.

4 out of 5 stars Great Overview with Excellent Training Recommendations.......2006-12-18

Gabe Suarez covers a wide range of topics: Pistol Selection, Ammunition, Accessories, Loading, Unloading, Grip, Stance, etc... It's an excellent overview of combat shooting for those just beginning to learn and a great review for those with more advanced skills.

There are numerous illustrations, a list of resources and practice drills (both live fire and dry fire).

Overall a well written book that covers a lot of ground. Suarez advocates perfect practice and dry fire training. He says..."the more you shoot, the worse shot you will become." From a personal perspective, my skills began to increase significantly after I decreased my live fire practice sessions and focused more on dry fire at home. Although it took me a while to believe in the concept; perfect practice at a slow to moderate pace WILL make you smooth and that smoothness is what makes you fast (i.e. slow is smooth and smooth is fast).

1 out of 5 stars Not What I Was Expecting.......2006-11-06

I was looking for a book to improve my shooting and I did not think this really helped. Full of anacdotes and little war stories. Not what I was after at all. My focus is on ISSF (or bullseye) shooting and this book is about police style use of firearms.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for pistol shooting.......2006-10-01

This book is an excellent primer for the person looking to be able to accurately fire a handgun very quickly. I purchased this book as a primer for the local concealed weapons license (CWL) course for my wife and benefited from it greatly as well.

The author explains stance, aiming and firing technique as well as a wealth of introductory information.

Some of the information is beyond basic (don't point your weapon at something you don't want to destroy) but is warranted considering the target audience of the book; his chapter on failure to stop was very good.

Hitting your target with a rifle at short range is very easy, however there is a great deal more technique required for a handgun and this book will go a long way towards getting you started.

I'd recommend getting professional instruction as well, the book could use better photos and they are black and white.

Our scores at 7-15 yards have increased 70% or so since we read the book, that's after 2 range trips.

5 out of 5 stars Ideal Book for Beginners.......2006-01-21

I started to think of having a hand gun 5 weeks ago, after reading this book and starting practicing I could score 98% on a 7 yard target consistently only after 3 weeks. My wife read the book and could score 87% on her first time shooting. I gave the book to a friend and I am buying a second one.

5 out of 5 stars Berlitz Pocket Guide To Paris...5 Stars.......2005-02-24

This neat little paperback book gives you enough of Paris to fit in your pocket. It has lots of full color pictures and lots of information packed into its 144 pages. I have never been there, but I definitely would like to go visit Paris after reading this book. Buy a copy and maybe you will too!

5 out of 5 stars The Spanish version is a different book!.......1999-12-06

I just want to correct the previous review from a reader in Georgia (USA). The Spanish version is a different book with different cover and ISBN number. The ISBN for the English version is 2831563151 (pub. date May 1998) while the one for the Spanish version is 2831665634 (pub. date Oct. 1998). This is a great little book...I shall be able to provide my true review when I come back from my trip to Paris in a month. See you soon.

Unarguably, one of the best Ql books . . . right next to Pulitzer. Sammi Jo's irritation w/ Harding is very understandable, but you've just gotta feel sorry for Sam when he tries to let her know who he is! The girl just won't listen. Of course, neither would I. She's had a hard life. But hacking into Ziggy? That was brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great leap.......1998-11-29

This installment in the series involves Sam's daughter Sammy Jo. A must read for any fan of the series.

4 out of 5 stars Great Job of Looking Back and Forward at Once.......1998-07-31

I really enjoyed Loch Ness Leap. It's the first QL book I've read but I enjoyed the way it used two previous leaps from the TV series. It futhered developed the personalities working in the present (future) time. The way the book deals with the delema of time travel and hinting at Ziggy's God likeness was excellent I wish that would have been developed more, even the possiblitiy that it is Ziggy that somehow is keeping Sam from coming home.

                              1 out of 5 stars sad travesty, don't bother.......2006-11-23

Someone has tried and failed to imitate the earlier books in this series. Although the characters are similar, they have been redrawn and renamed and instead of occupying the surreal dreamspace of Fool's Gold and earlier, they now live humdrum suburban lives of boredom and violence. Sound familiar. These books used to be filled with suspense because you never knew when a nonchalantly spoken phrase or pun or even a gesture might cause the plot to veer in a new direction and propel the characters into completely unforeseen situations and conflicts. There was a compelling element of loss as well, the real kind of loss that kids are so much closer to than adults. Willy and Wanda and Lambick were slapstick geniuses who knew how the material world and the dream world overlapped, and they relished having to suffer the consequences of this knowledge. Not so in Loch Ness Mystery. In fact, here we have a Scooby Doo redux where the adult fantasy world, in this case scientists, completely overwhelms and ruins the real world of the children. There is not even a vestige of hope left in these later books.

                              4 out of 5 stars interesting concept.......2006-01-15

It was fun to read a comic in english that I used to read in another language. Some of the jokes got lost in translation but overal it was an enjoyable read. The title translation doesn't really work for it. The original name: Suske & Wiske still works better than Spike & Suzy. Anyone who likes Asterix & Obelix would like this as well.

The Ancient Order of Moridura is a thrilling, action-packed novel about secrets borne of both modern technology and ancient spirituality. When a Scottish electronics tycoon receives an insistent request from the enigmatic Ancient Order of Moridura to deliver a young physicist to a remote monastery in Spain on pain of death, he undergoes a quest that will put him at odds with the American defense industry - which keenly desires the physicist's discovery - and the monastery's bizarre secrets, including an ancient entity called "La Bestia" stowed within its depths. An exciting read from cover to cover.

"Peter Curran's novel is a very savvy take on the cloak and dagger monastry
mystery , full of subtle twists and turns. There is a strong fantasy flavour
to this work. I'm a bit of a sci-fi lover so I enjoyed the combination of
technical science and the supernatural - or maybe that should be the
preternatural. The characters spark off one another in both camaraderie and
conflict. Full of surprises - there are some incredibly revelatory moments."

                              4 out of 5 stars A gripping read.......2007-02-28

The Ancient Order of Moridura is a gripping read that once started is hard to put down. It is a gothic tale set in an isolated Spanish monastery that guards an ancient and deadly secret. The labyrinthine architecture is matched by an intricate plot, that maintains a sense of suspense throughout the novel. The Ancient Order of Moridura brings together a truly extraordinary mix of characters that stay with the reader long after the book reaches its fantastical climax. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book a compelling read from beginning to end.

The events of September 11th, 2001,the invasion of Iraq, the threat of radical Islam,an impending showdown with Iran. What do these situations have in common? Oil. And the world is running out. The SHELL GAME is far more than a thriller, it is a MUST-READ cautionary tale that exposes the next 9/11 event a deception that will lead to a retaliatory chemical weapons strike on Iran and the terrorist elements the regime supports. Though the novel is written as fiction, it is filled with all-too-real details provided by insiders in the oil industry, military, and Middle Eastern affairs that extrapolates real events from the past and present that will lead us down a path of self-destruction.Unless we stop the insanity now! The story opens in 2007 when two CIA spooks meet with an American Colonel in military intelligence. The war is going badly, and President Bush, who steadfastly refuses to back down, remains unchallenged at home as Democrats and Republicans continue to toss verbal grenades positioning themselves for the 2008 elections. Meanwhile, Iran s pursuit of nuclear energy will yield enriched uranium within five years, uranium that can be used to manufacture suitcase nukes. The United States military is too drained to invade Iran, and a preemptive strike is out of the question, unless a nuclear detonation were to occur in an American city, the enriched uranium traced back to Iran. A U.S. reprisal would strike a death-blow against radical Islam, quell the insurgent violence in Iraq, and yield more oil. Yes, the cost is unthinkable but if we sit back and do nothing then one day a dozen suitcase bombs could go off in a dozen American cities bringing with it anarchy and the collapse of Western civilization.

December 2011: Ashley Ace Futrell is an oil expert working for PetroConsultants, married to Kelli Doyle, a former National Security Advisor and one of the CIA spooks from the opening scene.
