Book Description
In Blue Blood, veteran journalist and author Art Chansky examines the Duke-Carolina rivalry as it has evolved over the last fifty years. This is not the worn formula of a season inside a program; rather, its a detailed and colorful study of the greatest competition in college sports, which now pits two of the best coaches in the nation against each other. Its also a look at a maniacal subculture that has fans who camp out for weeks just to get tickets to the seasonal match-ups. And most important, its the story behind the story, with never-been-told details that could only be written by an insiderwith unparalleled access to both schoolswho has covered the rivalry for more than thirty years. Blue Blood is the first and only book to ever chronicle the past, present and future of what has become a cultural phenomenon in this country.
Customer Reviews:
Chansky's definitive take on the Tobacco Road rivalry.......2007-07-22
This completes Chansky's trilogy-of-sorts on North Carolina basketball; he had previously written "The Dean's List" and "Dean's Domain," both about former UNC Coach Dean Smith. In the time-honored tradition of "never throwing anything anyway," Chansky includes many of the same anecdotes that graced his earlier books, but, to be fair, he goes into more detail in most cases. He also surveys a wider field than previously, tracing the history of the Duke-UNC rivalry from the earliest times to the present (2004-05 season). There are some factual errors that might have been eliminated with greater editorial diligence, such as the misidentification of Jim Nantz as the lead announcer on the famous Duke-Kentucky East Regional final of 1992. (It was actually Verne Lundquist, and no, it's not that hard to check, since clips from that game appear constantly during CBS' broadcasts of Tournament action.) The book is very thorough and, though it displays a slight bias towards UNC, does do a reasonably even-handed job of detailing the highs and lows of the love-hate relationships between the geographical and athletic rivals. It's definitely a good choice for the college basketball fan's permanent library.
No Insights, No New Stories, and No Need to Buy.......2007-03-25
Recommendation: If you're shopping for a "starter" book for new basketball fan (say, an 11 year-old daughter or nephew), then Chansky's book covers all the bases. However, if you are familiar with the basic narrative, this book offers nothing of value. John Feinstein's Last Dance: Behind the Scenes at the Final Four touches briefly on the rivalry, but provides spectacular insight, interviews, and analysis in the NCAA Tournament.
Mr. Chansky missed an opportunity to chronicle the evolution of players, coaching philosophies, fans, and high profile college athletic departments with his pedantic recycling of the intertwined Duke and UNC basketball histories. This book reads like a college freshman term paper; the same formula for every chapter, no original source material, and an utter lack of analysis. With most the impact players from both programs still alive and lucid, Chansky could have interviewed Amaker, Bilas, both Capels, Cota, Hurley, Fox, Reid, Parks, Montross, etc and harvested their memories or impressions of how those two (or three) games per year changed the atmosphere of campuses, the adjoining towns, and their seasons for a given year. Instead, Chansky quoted a few program secretaries and called it a day. Those player insights would have provided added depth and detail to this shell of statistics and old Sports Illustrated stories. Instead, the reader churns through fluff and "classic" stories, but is left unfulfilled.
Balanced view of the rivalry.......2007-02-08
Even though it's written by a UNC grad, "Blue Blood" is a very interesting and seemingly balanced book on the UNC-Duke rivalry. As a Duke fan, I was afraid that this would be just another "we are superior because we are carolina" book, but it's not. Great insight.
Tar Heel Sports History Revealed.......2007-01-12
Blue Blood: Duke-Carolina by Art Chansky was requested by my husband for Christmas. He is really enjoying this book and even reads it aloud to me when some amazing facts unknown to us about Carolina and Duke are noted. We both have gleaned some very interesting information, laughed at funny situations and marveled at the actions of the people written about. Most all Carolina fans will truly enjoy reading and owning this book. Duke fans and other ACC schools can also experience the history and lore of these two great college basketball rivals!!!
Updated Paperback Even Better.......2006-12-06
As good as the original (hard cover) Blue Blood is, the paperback edition is even better because it updates (with a new Chapter 1 and Postscript) everything that happened in the rivalry since the book first came out in November, 2005 -- the entire 2006 season, including Carolina's stunning upset of Duke in Durham, the most recent recruiting news at both schools and an insightful explanation of how the Duke Basketball brand impacted the lacrosse scandal. Even for those who have the hard cover, the paperback is well worth the purchase and the read.

croatia.......2004-02-20
We used this book on a visit to Croatia last autumn and liked it a lot - the hotels and restuarants mentioned rated highly, without being typically touristy. For a quick visit to Croatia it makes a pefect introduction. For more extensive travel you may want to use it in combination with a more extensive guide.

Found the book a bit hard to follow at first-but..............1999-04-20
I have read a total of three of this author's books to date--Have enjoyed them thoroughly-She took my breath away with this one-I am a recovering alcoholic and found Valerie a very believeable character-I was saddened by the death of the jailer/farmer...also the character Tru is a true member of gay society as she changes lovers often-I am also an orphan and can understand the pain that rises from that-this book truly kept me reading to the end as I really could not put it down-Thanks Janet-please keep them coming
Thrilling romance full of mystery.......1999-02-05
I enjoyed this book to the max. This installment of the Tru North series was one of the best. Will re-read it again, and enjoy. This author gets better witheach book. I look forward to more.

Choose where you go!.......2006-03-19
I loved this book because you can choose your own path. You can't say to much about theese books because you might not have token the same path others have. But, you can tell someone it is interesting and full of suspense. You never know when the end will come for you. If you read it over and over while chosing different paths every time you won;t know what will happen next except in the beginning on the first page.
Will you figure out the mystery of chimney rock? Read this book and choose wisley to find out! :)
Very scary!.......2006-02-17
Too intense for younger readers! I enjoyed these books as a kid but I wouldn't let my kids read this one! Stick with some of the other ones like "Cave of Time" or "Prisoner Of The Ant People."

A friend and I had very creepy experiences reading this book..........2006-11-22
When I was in my early teens, both a friend and I had a very mysterious experience reading this book... it's like we both lost time reading it: I had read it, and told him how great it was, and how creepy it was, and when he borrowed it, he mentioned "losing time" where he just started reading then all of a sudden it was hours later... I recommend this innocent bit of creepy fun for any mature pre-teen (it certainly isn't all happy-ever-after). The illustrations contribute to the overall creepiness of the 'experience' of reading this book.
If the reader likes Harry Potter, the plots may be a little too simplistic, but it's fun, none the less.
Old school terror.......2006-08-10
A childhood favorite, this entry in the famous series has not been re-released yet. One of the more memorable, hopefully it will see the light of day again for the kiddies. (Not sure what criteria they use for the reprinting of the older titles).
Either way, glad to see that computers and video games have not totally killed the very simple pleasure these books held---sitting down, alone, with a book in your hand as a learning tool and as a spark for a young imagination. While not as challenging in a literary sense as other material, it provided something else in the personalization of the story through choices made in its reading.
This was one of the better early entries in this series. Essentially the exploration of a haunted house, it had more of the wonderful illustrations by Paul Granger, who did most of the early titles. For a young child, this was spooky---a mysterious house, a surly, ugly groundskeeper, a creepy old woman in a rocking chair, an evil black cat, and other elements combined to make this timeless. Always loved the mysterious old lady you randomly came across in the haunted mansion...
The printed page and the well-placed illustration have been more than enough to fuel an imagination for years and years; glad to see it hasn't completely died yet.

The beauty in all things terrible.......2000-04-06
Charlie Smith is a master wordsmith. With mere words on a page, he is able to do what so many other respected, talented, and successful writers are unable to do: teleport you not just into another place filled with other people, but into an idea. Fifty percent of any Smith book is theme. Just as we spend so much of our day feeling things abstractly, taking in smells that conjure up long lost memories, and existing in what feels sometimes like a void; Charlie Smith unleashes this part of his characters. Will Blake is a Hollywood actor birthing himself out of his existential crisis and can see and finally accept, distantly, the beautiful in the terrible. The end result is sweet, dark, scary, and insightful. I found myself rereading passages just because I wanted to. I began to dream about the people and the cities and the colors of all the flowers that populate Chimney Rock. Its the kind of book that reveals the true power of a gifted writer.
On the other hand, Charlie Smith is not for everyone. Inexperienced readers need not apply. If a good yarn is all your after, have a friend tell you the story. Charlie's prose is difficult. His sentences are long and crooked. They sometimes form into chains that lead to dramatically different places than they began. A man may walk into a restaraunt and say hello to a woman, but her response could occur three pages later with this type of writing. Its lyrical but indirect. Or, direct spiritually, but not narratively. Nonetheless, its the difficult roads that lead to the grandest rewards.
poetic but excessive.......1999-05-29
I have not read any of Charlie Smith's other work, so I can't compare this to previous efforts. His writing is poetic, and truly impressive in short bursts. But over the long haul, the poetry interferes with the prose. Words and phrases seem to be chosen more for their sounds and rhythms than for their contributions to plot, and dialogue can be stilted. Imagery is vivid but occasionally self-indulgent. The storyline is interesting at first but eventually grows gaudy and distasteful. The power of Smith's language is his greatest strength, but it is a strength better suited to poetry than novels.

Obsessed with mice.......2003-06-22
When Packard wrote this book he must've been obsessed with mice. The book is full of 'em and sometimes you're one of them. During the course of this book you find yourself in an old haunted house that's inhabited by a witch. More of a "escape the curse" type of book, there are no ghosts in the story. The only evil is the witch and her cat. It's a good book if you like to read about sneaking around a house where there's a good chance that you'll either be dead or marked for life. But if it's mystery you want, look somewhere else.
Choose your own adventure book.......2001-07-24
On your vacation in CT you notice a huge, empty stone house at the top of the hill. Some of the windows are boarded up. Some are covered with vines. The old house, known at "Chimney Rock," is so dark and gloomy that most people won't go near it.
But you are the curious type. Should you see for yourself what's inside? Your cousin urges you to go ahead.
What will you do....you choose.
Empowering and fascinating journey for young readers........1999-03-29
As a sixth grade teacher, I rarely see my students as fired up to read a novel as they are about the Choose Your Own Adventure series, especially The Mystery of Chimney Rock. They beg me to read to them and often fight over what few copies I have. Kids love to feel like they are in charge of something important and exciting, especially at the middle school age. The Mystery of Chimney Rock is consistent and doesn't contradict itself no matter how your story comes out. The circumstances the reader chooses dictate the action, not the author's manipulating the characters to influence the story. Suspenseful and nailbiting! Students feel genuinely involved and downright nervous as to whether they will live or die in the book.
One of the genre's best.......1998-12-22
Fans of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series will want to pick this one up if they ever see it in libraries or used bookstores. This is the series in its early prime, with originator Edward Packard at the helm. He creates a plausible haunted house with a somewhat original cat-and-mouse theme, some genuine terror for kids, and a fine atmosphere.
