The Nature of Plants: Habitats, Challenges, and Adaptations
ASIN: 1591024072 |
Book Description
The world would be a pretty drab place without flowers. Their bright cheery colors help make our natural environment a more delightful place to be. But flowers in all their beautiful variations didn't evolve just for the viewing pleasure of the later-developing human race. What are flowers really for? As botanist and popular science writer William Burger makes clear in this enchanting book, the quick and simple answer is: sex. Burger emphasizes the essential role that flowers play in life's evolutionary scheme. Their bright colors and alluring shapes represent a strategy for attracting insects and inducing animals to help with pollination. This constant intermingling is nature's way of perpetuating the species and encouraging variety, so as to protect against disease and unpredictable environments. Flowers are the supreme example of nature's reproductive exuberance, ensuring the persistence of life against an onslaught of destructive forces. More significantly, Burger points out, flowers are the fundamental energy resource for most of the biosphere. Since they energize themselves by capturing the energy of sunlight, they provide a vital link in the chain of life, especially for animals and humans, which depend on other organisms to nourish and energize them. Without the existence of flowering plants, human survival would be in jeopardy. Finally, Burger goes on to show the paramount importance of a few species of plants that have served not only as the basis of agriculture, but, in doing so, have enabled human civilization to thrive. Even today, in our complex technological world, it is the flowering plants that provide us with nearly all the vegetable energy that sustains us. Written with clarity, wit, and engaging enthusiasm for the marvels of our fragile ecosystem, Flowers will make you stop and smell the roses, with a new appreciation of their crucial role in the web of life.

Everything You Might Have Wanted to Know about Flowers.......2006-07-28
William C. Burger's "Flowers: How They Changed the World" is certainly a labor of love. His clear and enthusiastic prose transported me back to a course in botany I had at the University of Arizona around 1970. As a zoologist I had had little contact with botany, but I had always been interested in the subject. The course I took in botany opened up this fascinating world and I now remember the hours I spent in class and in hunting flowering plants in the desert as golden. This book brought all that delight back.
From the structure of flowers, through their function, defences, evolutionary history and history related to humans and other organisms, Burger has opened the door to an enchanted world. Yet it is the world just outside, in vacant lots, woods, meadows, tropical forests, agricultural fields, yards, roadsides, deserts and swamps- in fact almost anywhere.
A naturalist can find profound interest in the weeds, wild flowers and cultivated plants described here, and thus is almost never bored. I thus recommend this volume without reservation. It will open the reader's eyes to an absolutely engrossing subject and may give them a life-long passion.
A top pick for college-level students and leisure readers who like science and gardening books.......2006-07-25
Flowers are one of the most attractive aspects of the outdoors; but they didn't evolve just for humans to appreciate. Botanist and science writer William Burger examines the role of flowers in the natural world, from how their bright colors and shapes attract and induce animals to help with pollination to how they serve as an energy resource. Chapters survey flowers, their pollinators, and how flowers have enabled ecosystems to survive in his lively blend of botanical research and wide-ranging natural history insights. A top pick for college-level students and leisure readers who like science and gardening books.

Filled with top-notch suggestions.......2004-04-05
Compiled and organized by Paul Karr, New York City: An Explorer's Guide is an in-depth survey and an impressive presentation of what makes New York City great. An ideal informational resource for tourist and resident alike, New York City: An Explorer's Guide provides "user friendly" recommendations among great museums of art and science; locales that feature music, dance, opera, on and off-Broadway theater; historic sites; religious places of worship; up-to-date maps (including the MTA subway system map); extensive restaurant recommendations; and so much more. From cover to cover, New York City: An Explorer's Guide is filled with top-notch suggestions, resulting in a truly first-rate guidebook for anyone visiting (or in permanent residence) wanting to know just what this great American city has to offer them.
Better Titled "Manhattan: An Explorer's Guide".......2004-02-09
I did enjoy reading this book, and I do think it's useful-- just not as useful as it might be.
First, you should be warned that most of the book is devoted to chronicling the neighborhoods of Manhattan. The "outer boroughs" section is very small, especially for the amount of territory it purports to cover.
Second, the book is divided out by neighborhood, so you have to have some familiarity with Manhattan to be able to find the information you need. (You can't just look up "museums" and expect to find a listing of all New York's museums at your finger tips.) However, there is a nice index provided at the back of the book.
If you are traveling to New York, I would recommend you use this book as a supplement to another guidebook.

Customer Reviews:
Choose Your Own Adventure.......2007-09-10
These books are fantastic - I have fond memories of them from my childhood. As a school teacher, they are a wonderful read aloud. I let the children vote everytime there is a choice. They think they're great!
Great reading for people of all ages.......2007-09-03
We have read Choose Your Own Adventure 1-6, and our 7 year old son, my husband & I were glued to every book. The books are well written, interesting & intriguing. Not too scary but gripping. We highly reccomend these books to everyone. They can be read & reread, a real plus.
NOT the original books.......2007-04-20
My children have been enjoying some of my old Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 80's, so when I saw this rerelease of several classic books for such a reasonable price, I bought it for them. Well, apparently R.A. Montgomery wasn't able to get the rights on the original illustrations, so he had a bunch of freelance designers from Thailand draw replacement pictures for each of them, and they are AWFUL. Not just 'different,' but shockingly, unignorably BAD -- they look like cartoons drawn carelessly by teenagers, with no sense of proportion, anatomy, lighting, or anything else. The drawings in "Mystery of the Maya" are not bad but most of the others are so terrible they render the books unreadable. Leaving them unillustrated would have been better than this. Find used copies of the originals (most of which are for sale cheap on Amazon) or just pick something else to read.
Paths Too Short.......2007-03-30
You make one or two choices and the book is over. They should only have a few endings and make each path longer.
My 9-year-old LOVES these.......2007-01-10
We bought these books for our son because we remembered how much we loved them at his age. They are much quicker reads than I remember, but he loves them, so they get 5 stars. One book takes him less than 45 minutes to get through. He hasn't gotten to the stage where he goes back and makes different choices yet, but I'm sure he'll become even more fond of them then.

great book!.......2007-09-06
my son loves these books! he likes that you can choose how the story ends and then read it again and choose a different ending. nice to have a book that can be read more than once and still be fun.
Warning: This is NOT the original version.......2007-04-20
Don't buy this book expecting a reprinting of the original 1982 Choose Your Own Adventure book. The text has been revised, though the revision is serviceable enough; but what's worse is that all of the illustrations have been replaced with hideously bad cartoons. Words cannot even express how amateurish and badly drawn these cartoons are, and they're on nearly every page, so it's impossible to ignore them. Buy a used copy of the original book, or choose something else to read.
Read this book.......2007-01-04
This book is crazy. You are a young detective, solving crimes. The story begins with a mysterious phone call for help. You end up following clues to the old site of a prison. That is where the real adventure begins. There are talking chimpanzees, a professor, genetically altered plants, aliens, explosions, and all sorts of advanced technology! Each turn of the page brings a new scene with new characters and new dangers. It's up to you how the story ends.
great innovative idea.......2000-04-06
This was the first of the Choose Your Own Adventure books that I ever read, and I loved it. That was about fifteen years ago. I am currently trying to hunt all of them down and add them to my collection, because I loved them so much growing up.
These books are perfect for a younger reader. They are not straight novels. They are not 300-400 pages long. In fact, some adventures can last about 3 or 4 pages! They are not filled with big words, and they are not boring. In fact, they're aimed at pure action and adventure, yet they're not violent at all. There's little plot and character building, which is something that might turn a younger reader off.
Plus, as small as each book is, they contain numerous different stories. It is up to the reader to decide how the story ends. It is Nintendo in book form!
In this particular book, you are investigating a mysterious house. Who owns the house? What kind of strange things or people will you encounter?
If you are looking for material to encourage a child to read for any reason, these books are perfect!

Mom of 10 year old autistic boy.......2002-04-12
As the mother of an autistic son, we have had a great deal of difficulty in getting him to enjoy reading. He doesn't understand a great many words, but has a few "subjects" he really enjoys. Star Wars,Episode 1 is one of them. This book has been a real find that he loves! I am getting more of them, as they don't "talk down" to kids, really explain the movie in detail, and help kids understand many things (in life, as well as the movie!) better. We are really looking forward to the next Star Wars movie this summer- as well as the books that will follow it!
Wonderful adventure story!.......2002-01-02
DANGERS OF THE CORE takes a section of the movie 'Phantom Menace' and, step by step, breaks down the action that flies by so quickly on the big screen. This makes it easy for children to follow. The excitement starts with the first sentence and never lets up!
The illustrations are expressive and dramatic; nicely done.
DANGERS teaches children to respect all living beings. Qui-Gon Jinn is the epitome of patience (especially with Jar Jar!), and remains calm, steady and in control even in the midst of danger. Excellent life lessons for children!
Another plus: The story doesn't 'talk down' to children. It assumes an appropriate level of maturity and intelligence.
I'd take off half a star because Jar Jar's speech is impossible for some children to understand when reading the book on their own.
Nevertheless, all the children to whom I read DANGERS OF THE CORE just loved it! And with such a variety of characters and emotions, it's fun to read out loud, too.
Highly recommended for children as well as old fogeys who are young at heart!
Getting Boys Excited about Reading.......2000-04-19
"Dangers of the Core" is a great beginning reader, especially for a boy. The book carefully summarizes the underwater chase from the Episode 1 movie into easy-to-read language that captures a boy's attention. I have had trouble finding interesting early readers that my son will read; but when we found this book, he would not put it down. He read it TWICE in the first day--without prompting! Thank you for sparking his interest in reading!
