Book Description
Two and a half million years ago, in what is today Northern Tanzania, the top blew off a gigantic volcanic mountain leaving behind one of the biggest craters in the world. Over the millennia the crater became a national park for wildlife. Herbivores followed vegetation to the Ngorongoro and predators followed herbivores. Men followed, too, hunting for the tusks of rhinos and elephants, and the coats of the zebra. Rangers, photographers, and anthropologists came, too, to the place that many call the Garden of Eden. Reinhard Kunkel's beautiful, often astonishing, sometimes startling images, alongside landscapes of a primeval grandeur, make this book a triumph of wildlife photography.
Reinhard Kunkel has been photographing there since 1973. He has lived with and shot the land and the animals - the lions, elephants, eagles, buffalo and hippopotamuses -- for the last thirty years. He has shot them mating, raising their young, killing their prey. He has watched herds of buffalo charge and scatter lions, followed the egrets searching for insects in the steps of the rhinos, stayed up nights waiting for the female rhino to accept the advances of the male, observed jackals and vultures staring each other down in confrontation over a kill, and the flamingoes feasting on the abundant blue-green algae. Unrivalled in the richness and diversity of its animal and plant life, Ngorongoro has been called the eighth wonder of the world.
The original edition of this book was published in the United States in 1992. Updated with new photographs and extended by a new 16-page signature on the Maasai, it is an unrivalled work of design and production. Limited to 5,000 copies world wide.

Ngorogoro.......2007-08-23
Breathtaking photography. Kunkel has captured the atmosphere so brilliantly that I felt as though I was back in this spectacular place. Bravo!
now you have to go yourself.......2007-07-27
If you ever had the desire to go to Africa and take pictures this is the book that will cause you to sell the house to make the desire come true. The photography is beyond the norm. Inspiring where mere words could not do justice. Well done in all ways.
Beautiful book.......2007-06-08
This is a lovely book - the photographs are breathtaking. I gave it as a gift to a professional photographer.
I ordered it from the UK, and it arrived in a few days. Excellent!
Ngorongoro revisited.......2007-03-24
The high quality of the book (paper, photo's, layout) let us relive our trip to the crater. There are some really spectacular photo's. The photographer captured with his camera the beautiful but also raw daily life of one of the most amazing spots on this planet.
A Fantastic Collection of Wildlife Photos.......2000-09-06
After having visited East Africa (and Ngorongoro) 3 times and looked at dozens of wildlife photo books, I entirely agree with the previous review that this is one of the most fantastic collections of wildlife pictures. Till this day I regret not having bought the book while it was still available. I hope the publisher will reprint it (as happened with "African Elephants" also by Kunkel).

Book Description
The first of a series of CD-ROMs focusing on the world's wild places and the creatures that inhabit them. Filmed entirely on location, and specifically for multimedia formats, this CD takes the reader to the African plains of Tanzania, home to one of the world's richest collections of animal, primate, and bird populations. A habitats section provides interactive maps allowing the reader to explore three of Tanzania's national parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire) including their various ecological zones and animal populations. A visual tour section offers an extended photo-essay covering over 75 species, and a field guide provides instant access to information about all the plants and animals on the CD-ROM.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Introduction and Souvenir.......1999-09-13
Having just returned from Tanzania and visiting these parks, I sat down to use this CD again. It was purchased prior to my trip to give me some insight to the places I would visit. This it did very well.
I found that the CD was well put together, with an interesting introduction and generally good photographs of wildlife, plants and locations.
The CD gives a very good overview of the areas it covers and I find that it now makes a nice souvenir of my trip. Looking it after actually visiting the parks brings it all back again!
For anyone wanting to get a feel of the national parks, then this CD can be recommended. Like any product, it could be improved (the background music gets a little repetitive after a while) but any criticism would be fairly minor.
I think that the CD would also prove a useful eductational resource for African Wildlife studies, particularly as individual slide show sequences can be made and photographs transferred from it.
All in all, a nice CD and recommended.
A fun romp through wild Africa.......1999-06-10
Wild Africa Volume One Review By Dr. Larry L. Hunt
Wild Africa, Volume One, is a fun voyage with pictures and narration into three of Africa's most beautiful game refuges, Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Tarangire. The CD is broken down into three sections:
1-A Visual Tour which is a photo essay that details the splendor and drama of the African plains through large 9 X 7 inch vivid color photos using upbeat background music and a charming female narrator.
2-A Locations Guide that explores three of Tanzania's wildlife parks through maps, photos, and movies.
3-A Field Guide that gives you instant access to information about hundreds of plants, birds, and animals of East Africa.
Overview
The controls to move through the experience are easy to use and straight forward, not requiring any elaborate manual or instructions. One Control Bar located along the right side of any information or picture allows you to easily move from one area to another. The program allows you to export any of it's movies, text or pictures individually for use in your own creations. The text exports as a Word file and the photos are nearly all PICT files. The program has a very interactive search engine allowing you to select any of the movies, text or photos through and individual search using a name or through a find all search of any of the categories. You can also design your own custom slide show by selecting photos to be played in any order you desire. The help menu is very clear and straight forward and is actually fun to browse through.
Quality
I am using a 21 inch screen and am very pleased with the quality of the color and text. However, it would be a nice touch if I was able to increase the size of the display beyond the 9 X 7 inch size.
Photos
The photographs are exceptional with great variety and contrast. If anyone is interested in the flora and fona of Africa, they will not be disappointed.
Information
The sources of the information used for this CD are a variety of excellent texts including,"The Safari Companion," by Estes, "Collins Field Guide, Birds of East Africa," by Williams and Arlott, "A Guide to Tanzania National Parks," by Lyogello, and Park Tourist Guides to Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Serengeti. My wife has been to all of these parks on two separate trips and she says that from her standpoint the information is rather basic by accurate. Having never been to Africa myself, I rather enjoyed the basics. I believe, Wild Africa, Volume One is a great value and I am anxiously awaiting the release of Volume Two which I have been told is now available.
The photos in this cd are disappointing........1999-04-19
The photos in this cd are quite disappointing. It was apparently manufactured in 1995. Photo resolution and technology has advanced so much since then that you feel like you are looking through gauze. The descriptions of places and animals are not very complete either.

Book Description
The battle for the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most gripping conservation stories of the last century. Those throwing their hats into the ring have included a formidably imposing German farmer, a trigger-happy Scots baronet, and an ex-British army captain with some rather reckless ideas on how to photograph lions.
Such interlopers have had to contend with the Maasai, who believe all the cattle in the world are theirs; conservationists who wish to preserve the Ngorongoro as a natural habitat; and of course the animals themselves, inhabiting the rich grasslands of the crater floor in teeming numbers.
The Ngorongoro Story traces the history of the crater from the pioneering days of the early explorers, through two world wars, up to recent international efforts to save the natural habitat of the Ngorongoro for posterity.

Ngorongoro Story.......2006-05-19
This book combines current and historical pictures with an engrossing story told by a man who spent most of his life near the area he describes. For those with an interest in the history as well as the wildlife of Africa, this book can't be topped.

A wonderful book with some great stories about an amazing nature sanctuary. Tom Lithgow weaves a wonderful tale and there are some great photos too.

Book Description
Ngorongoro Conservation Area in the heart of Maasailand is one of the world's most important conservation heritage areas. This book centres on a field study of the Ngorongoro Maasai and their herds, around which present knowledge of African rangeland, wildlife, livestock and pastoralist ecology is brought together and analysed. Management problems in Ngorongoro encapsulate many of the major debates in the ecology and conservation of African savannas. This book explores perceived problems, ecological facts and possible management solutions. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the authors argue a highly charged issue in terms of ecological fact and theory. This is an essential book for all those interested in the interface between wildlife conservation and human land use, whether professional ecologists or biologists, conservationists or resource managers, development workers or rural planners, and more generally, all those concerned with the ecological facts behind environmental and development issues.

Customer Reviews:
Baseball America Prospect Handbook 2006.......2007-02-23
Baseball America 2006 Prospect Handbook breaks down the top 30 minor league players for each of the 30 Major League Baseball teams. The handbook takes testimony from scouts, front office personel as well as minor league coaches. Problems do seem to arise with biased opinions about players. Sometimes you will see players get unfairly compared to great players. For instance the book refers to Justin Upton as the next Ken Griffey Jr. At the time that this book was written upton was not yet 19, had not signed a contract, and had never played a single game above the high school level. The staff writers do try to temper expectations but even their eyes can be clouded with unrealistic espectations of certain players. Another issue that can't be ignored is the fact that Baseball America does ignore a lot of the statistical analysis that has been made over the last 20 or so years. A great example how underrated players like Travis Hafner have been in past handbooks. With all of its faults I must say that it is still the premeire source on baseball prospects that is available. The handbook gives insightful and indepth analysis on 900 players. There is usually useful information on injuries, work ethic, bat speed, pitch speed, pitch movement, glove skills, and athleticism. This information comes from watching many games and speaking with the people closest to these players. As well as giving a minor league depth chart, the handbook also tantilizes readers with a projected 2009 future lineup(excluding the possibilities of trades or free agency). Another strength of the handbook is that there are 13 writers and each cover different teams so each time you read a new team you are given an interesting and fresh perspective. Wether you are trying to get ahead in your fantasy league, looking to the future of your favorite team, or just love baseball; this book is for you.
Could be more helpful to the casual fans (and serious).......2007-01-27
I have been a fan of Baseball America for awhile now; I consider myself knowledgeable about baseball, more thanks to John Sickels and Bill James than Baseball America.
Baseball America takes you where you don't normally hear about, or follow as in depth, such as college, high school baseball and international baseball.
I truly enjoy their work in this "guide book". However, I wish they would explain how they rank their players in the Top 30 category more clearly.
For instance. The Brewers' minor league system number one prospect of 2006 was Prince Fielder (a firstbaseman, now major leaguer). By reading the stats, I can see why. RHP Mark Rogers was ranked number 2. I failed to see why. The stats don't reveal the truth behind his "skills" and "talent". [these are in quotes, because baseball skill and talent are two different things...]
In the preface, Baseball America explains the Scouts scales. Perhaps this could be used more in the book itself when explaining how prospects are rated. How is, for instance, Mark Rogers better than Yovani Gallardo? (a fellow Brewers' RHP ranked 4th despite having better stats.
Yes, I am well aware that baseball isn't all about stats. But, Baseball America could do a better job of explaining the ranks.
Other than that minor gripe, I am very pleased with their efforts.
A Must for the Serious Fantasy Baseball Owner.......2006-03-18
This marks the fifth year in a row that I've purchased this book. It has become my bible for evaluating minor league talent. Its scouting reports are clear, well-written, and for the most part, on target. Whether you're a fantasy baseball owner or just a fan of the game, you'll enjoy this book.
The bible for baseball prospects and the minor leagues........2006-03-10
Baseball America is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive, intelligent, and insightful source on the minors leagues, MLB teams' farm systems, and prospects. It also provides a lot of great insight and coverage of the best of college and high school teams and players, as well as some coverage from international prospects which could some day be in the majors. Simply put, Baseball America is an invaluable source of the more-than-casual baseball fan.
So it's no surprise that Baseball America's Prospect Handbook is *the* source of information on prospects. It gives you the top 30 prospects of every MLB team, as well as scouting reports on all of them. This is invaluable for the hardcore baseball fan - anyone can spout off any team's top 10 prospects. Most fans know of the big names in 2005 - Jeremy Hermida, Delmon Young, Brandon Wood, Justin Verlander, Chad Billingsley, Carlos Quentin, Joel Guzman, etc. But when you want to go beyond the Top 10, when you want to do more than scratch the surface on the collection of talent (or lack thereof, in the case of teams like the Nationals and Reds) then this book is a necessity. I'd go so far as to say that if you're reading these reviews, this book is probably for you. Considering the information and well-designed format and attractive design, it isn't very expensive at all, and if you can find a used copy for those of you who are looking for information, not a museum copy, all the better, you can usually find one for around $15. Not bad.
So, do you want to know who's rated higher in the Indians organization, Bear Bay or Nick Pesco? Who has the higher ceiling in the Cubs' organization, Billy Petrick or Sean Gallagher? Do you have any question about any minor league player? This is the book to go to.
Recommended for hardcore fans and those who enjoy keeping up with the younger talent on the horizon.
For anyone interested in their team's future.......2006-02-16
If you have any interest in following baseball beyond each team's 25-man roster, then this is an essential publication. Covering 30 prospects for each major league team (for a total of 900), this is about as comprehensive a look you're going to find at prospects.
Baseball America has a well-earned reputation as the best place to find minor league, college, and high school baseball information, and that expertise is evident in the book. Each team has their prospects graded, and a look at each team's most recent amateur draft is included. The list of the top 100 prospects is also enjoyable - or not, depending on how many players from your team are included on that list.
Unless you're a team that can afford to sign several high-priced free agents each year, player development is critical to future success. And if you're a fan who has a serious interest in your team, then it's an area to which you likely pay a great deal of attention. But while other publications touch occasionally or briefly on team's top minor-league prospects, no other mainstream publication does as good a job of giving a serious and deep look at your organization's prospects.
I'd recommend buying this one every year, as it's one of the best general looks at an organization's prospects. Along with John Sickels' prospects book (available on his website), this is a necessary purchase for serious fans.

Book Description
Rob's younger sister, Chloe, has been in a coma for three months, and his life is in disarray. To distract himself and avoid his grieving parents, Rob takes a job at a local—and mysterious—archaeological dig. There an ancient tree has been discovered, growing upside down—a tree that leads to the Unworld, the kingdom a seemingly happy and healthy Chloe presides over with no desire to return to her old life.
Customer Reviews:
Don't bother.......2006-10-09
I cannot believe this book rated positive reviews at all. Wow.
The only positive thing I can think of is the main character, who I liked in a rather abstract way.
The writing was distractingly obtuse. Nothing ever really made sense except the parts told in this world, which were so broken up by strange people and even stranger events that they could not hold the narrative together. And I say strange meaning that these are things never explained. They just "happened."
The dream/alt. reality world they descended into halfway in had no rules. Often the narrative would lead one way, then backtrack whimsically as if to say, "well, I guess we won't go in that direction after all."
The biggest mystery of them all, the one that kept me reading, frustrated though I was, had no true answer, so that all of the lead-up just fizzles away.
Finally, Chloe was a horrible, hateful character that I found myself wishing they would just leave in that weird world. Her hatred of Rob, her brother, was so unjustified (as far as the narrative goes) that I just felt as blindsided as Rob about it.
Additionally, The Poet and the Goddess who were friends/enemies/lovers and who knew what else made absolutely no sense to me. Sorry. I was wishing the author would just specify!!! It was like watching a movie through fog.
And lest you think I'm a fantasy hater, let me set your mind at ease. I adore good writing in any genre--fantasy, especially. I just hate a work that asks tons of questions, never answers them and hopes that moodiness will carry a patchy narrative over the plotholes.
This book is not good. Period.
Very touching.......2006-08-13
Anyone who has a sibling can relate to this book. The plot is one of the oldest around; sibling rivalry. However it is so masterfully told and interwoven with shaman myths that it becomes a completely original work. It is wonderfully written. I found myself rereading several descriptions in the book and wondering how the author came up with it. (I read a lot of books and this is not normal for me.) Just a quick example exerpt...
"There was only a cold dread that had started to creep in, like the tendrils of fog that were rising in the chamber of trees, the damp clouds of his own breath."
Anyway, unlike some books, the characters aren't just skin deep. They are skillfully carved out and then brought to life. I highly recommend this book.
A Sophisticated Book - Wonderfully Paced.......2006-04-05
Slightly reminiscent of one of my other favourite books, Alan Garner's Owl Service, this is a fabulous book about the explosive emotions of adolescence and the traps of sibling rivalry cunningly interwoven with druidic mythology. I've only previously read the rather younger Snow Walker books by Fisher, but I am seriously impressed by Darkhenge. It has a great deal to offer to early teen readers - both male and female - and is full of rich, poetic writing. I also think there are a fair few Strange & Norrel and Philip Pullman reading adults who will find this utterly compelling. This deserves cross-over readership too.
fabulous coming of age fantasy .......2006-03-17
In Avebury, England, following a riding mishap, Chloe is hospitalized in a comatose state. Her parents are distraught visiting her frequently and forcing her older brother Rob see her at least once a week. Rob cares for his sibling and prays for her recovery, but is uneasy with the visits and unhappy with his parents' demands. He needs to escape so using his art talent he obtains work with Dr Kavanagh at ahighly secretive archeological dig of a prehistoric wooden circle, the media blitz would be catastrophic.
Not long after starting his new job, Rob meets the shape-shifting Druid, Vetch who claims to have been alive when the wooden circle he calls DARKHENGE was created. He also tells the teen that his sister in incarcerated in another realm, the Unworld, where she also has a chance to become a queen. Vetch will provide Rob the key to enter and leave Unworld with his sister if the lad assists him with gaining entrance into the highly secured dig.
DARKHENGE is a fantastic young adult fantasy that older fans will fully appreciate as much as the Potter crowd will enjoy the tale. Though Chloe is the key character, Rob holds the exciting story line together as he must make some difficult decisions starting with whether he should trust Vetch by breaking his employment vow and never slowing down unto the final confrontation that will shock the audience. Catherine Fisher provides a fabulous coming of age fantasy starring a wonderful hero.
