Book Description
Each year, thousands of tourists visit Mount Mitchell, the most prominent feature of North Carolina's Black Mountain range and the highest peak in the eastern United States. Environmental historian Timothy Silver explores the long and complicated history of this intriguing landscape, drawing on both the historical record and his experience in the Black Mountains as a backpacker and fly fisherman. He chronicles the geological and environmental forces that created the mountains, then traces their history of environmental change and human intervention from the days of Indian-European contact to today.
Among the many tales Silver recounts is that of Elisha Mitchell, the renowned geologist and University of North Carolina professor for whom Mount Mitchell is named, who fell to his death there in 1857. But nature's stories--of forest fires, chestnut blight, competition among plants and animals, insect invasions, and, most recently, airborne toxins and acid rain--are also part of Silver's narrative, making it the first history of the Appalachians in which the natural world gets equal time with human history. It is only by understanding the dynamic between these two forces, Silver says, that we can begin to protect the Black Mountains for future generations.

Excellent read..........2006-04-26
Weaving the history of the Black Mtns with the author's personal diary made this book exceptional. I particularly enjoyed the theory on how mountain balds were formed and how native americans survived and made most of the land. I recommend this book to anyone who hikes or camps and appreciates the mountains.
Mount Mitchell.......2004-11-23
What an excellent book! Timothy Silver has given us a two fold view of Mount Mitchell and the Black Mountains of North Carolina. A combination of the natural history of the area, and man's exploration/exploitation of these lofty peaks. I think what I enjoyed most about the book, were the short "interludes" where the writer inserts his many experiences of car camping, hiking/backpacking, trout fishing, or just marveling at nature while sitting at some well known spot, or some "hidey-hole" known only to people who frequent the area. These personal thoughts heightened my reading pleasure, because like the writer, I have spent a great deal of time in the Blacks and know of what he speaks.
The battle between the Mountain's namesake, the Rev. Elisha Mitchell and his former student, future Confederate general Thomas Clingman about who measured the mountain first, is fleshed out completely, and is probably the definitive account of this famous row.
The end chapters deal with mankind's interventions on the mountain, and the consequences of these acts. This is followed up with concise information about the acid rain/woolly adelgid issues affecting the Fir and Red Spruce trees on the mountain tops, along with some discussion about the growth cycles about the above mentioned trees, which in my opinion, clears up some of the misinformation out there. For years, the problem was blamed on woolly adelgids, then on acid rain. I personally feel like these two scourges work together hand in hand to decimate the once proud Fraser Firs.
This is truly a groundbreaking book. I'd like to see more works that follow this vein. Nicely illustrated.
The Black Mountains and Nature's Inherent Complexity.......2004-08-01
Timothy Silver has given us an excellent history of Mount Mitchell and the Black Mountains.
The work is titled as an environmental history, and it is supported by a wealth of factual information, but the whole presentation is a wonderful flowing story of these peaks in western North Carolina, and their history as they were shaped by nature and by man.
Of special interest is the account of the feud between Elisha Mitchell and Thomas Clingman. The story encompasses misunderstandings, fragile egos, and desperate politics. When Mitchell fell to his death in 1857, the public mind established Mitchell as a hero and martyr who died to establish these peaks as the state's best known landmark. His body was later moved to the higest peak, which is forever known as Mount Mitchell.
We are also able to see the history of man's interaction with nature. In the case of the Blacks, it is often with tragic results, and even when the intentions are good, the outcome is often marginal.
Dr. Silver leaves us with a compelling book that provides much information and asks many questions that we should consider not only for this mountain range, but for our environment as well.
I highly recommend this book. The author has done us a great favor.
Nature meets Culture.......2003-03-01
What a terrific book Timothy Silver has crafted! Anyone interested in mountains, hiking, fishing, environmental issues, natural history, or the local history of North Carolina's mountains will enjoy this wonderful account. Professor Silver, a historian in western North Carolina, has written a book in which Mount Mitchell stars at the center of his narrative--and both general readers and professional historians can find meaning and pleasure in his tale.
Like many environmental historians, Silver sees in the reciprocal interaction between nature and culture a larger story of a region. And he brings us this compelling story from a variety of intriguing angles. He offers his own assessments, ones generated on his extensive hiking and fishing trips in the Black Mountains of western North Carolina. He provides insight into the steamy 19th century historical controversy between rivals each seeking to determine which was the highest peak in the region--and to see who could do it first and most authoritatively. (And as a New Englander, I found the tale inviting even if our White Mountains fall short in elevation to North Carolina's peaks!) Professor Silver also examines logging practices and regional boosterism, the antecedent of eco-tourism.
The book has something that will be compelling for a wide audience of readers interested in the natural world and local history--and the style is accessible and enjoyable. Whether you've hiked a lot, love North Carolina, want to investigate stormy political and personal feuds, or wish to know more about regional environmental history, "Mount Mitchell" is a fine read. I commend it to you!

Master the Secrets of The Super-Strong Using Bodyweight Exercises Only
The Graduate Course In Instant Strength Gains

"I could do one wobbly one-legged squat

"Last night I did 15 one-arm pushups with each arm.

Have you noticedthe greater a man's skill, the more he achieves with less? And the skill of strength is no exception. From the ancient days of Greek wrestling, to the jealously guarded secrets of Chinese Kung Fu masters, to the hard men of modern spec ops, warriors and allied strongmen have developed an amazing array of skills for generating inhuman strength.
But these skills have been scattered far and wide, held closely secret, or communicated in a piecemeal fashion that has left most of us frustrated and far from reaching our true strength potential.
Now, for the first time, Russian strength expert and former Spetsnaz instructor Pavel has gathered many of these devastating techniques into one highly teachable skill set. In The Naked Warrior Pavel reveals exactly what it takes to be super-strong in minimum timewhen your body is your only tool.

KEEP YOUR MONEY.......2007-05-30
Although a good treatise on one arm pushups and one leg squats, this "book" is really nothing more than a "pamphlet" with VERY big pictures and VERY big letters. Dowse this lack of content with some "secret Soviet Spetznaz" hoo-ha and you have an instant hit for the low, low price of.......well you get the picture. Oh, and if that is not enough hoo-ha, there are plenty of pages dedicated to all of the other "secret soviet" programs that Pavel peddles for ridiculous amounts of money. Unless you are simply a die-hard Pavel fan, your cash would be better spent on.....lets see...anything.
Bodyweight tension for limbs. None for the spine........2007-05-27
I review Pavel's book with my irresistible personal prejudice that stems from resenting unreal mentoring. Yet, Pavel proved himself by appealing to a majority of people who have been left out of the athletic world by virtue of the commercially motivated health clubs. Pavel benefits from the great opportunity of having a vast majority of customers hungry for motivation and challenge.
Many people have found a niche in Pavel's Kettlebell contests and exercises that enhance the upper body. It would be unfair to deny him such contribution to the field of folklore fitness. If left to my own device, I would give the book one star for poor planning and exposing readers to injurious activity. I opted for the four stars in crediting the highly motivated and innovative work of the author.
This book, published in 2003, shares the other criticized features of Pavel's books such as poor referencing, unscientific and unproven advices, commercially driven motives, and high risk and injury prone routines. The new features particular to this book that deserve criticism follow.
The book plunges into high-yield and high-risk bodyweight tensioning exercises from the get go. Push up, one leg squat, and pull ups assortments are principal routines described in the book. No single exercise will address the spinal erectors nor does any exercise address the spinal posture during squatting in particular.
The three exercises could cause life-long injury to the rotator cuffs, knees, and spines since the author admittedly states that "no routine is required". With no routine, the reader is left to believe in inconsistent training and quick short cut.
The author erroneously claims that "the harder you contract your muscles, the stronger they get". That defies the basic principle of physiology that muscles require external resistance in order to develop strength. Strength, the author claims, is a skill. The author further claims that only "tension" advances strength and bouncing and momentum motions is a form of cheating.
First, you could not get stronger by mere contracting your own muscles; otherwise the astronauts would have done that without resistance machines. Second, bouncing and momentum are essential in creating virtual forces that exceed static forces. All natural movements such as walking, running, and jumping require bouncing, impact, and inertia utilization. Without jerking motions, the fast muscle fibers would not develop strength, the tendons and ligaments would not toughen up, and the neural responses would not adapt to fast reaction.
A classic example of bouncing strength exercise is hand-hopping on horizontal parallel bars or the sides of a horizontally suspended ladder. That is an exercise which many top lifters have learned would strengthen the arms and upper body beyond any known weight training. It simply mimics what chimpanzees do on trees.
Pavel's light bodyweight enables him to do the one-leg squat, one arm push ups, and chin-ups far beyond the majority of the chubby and fluid-loaded American population. The limbs of the vast American population could easily buckle and incur permanent injuries with Pavel's macho routine of unsystematic and unorganized training. Of course, there is no one-hand pull-up in this book since that requires extreme power beyond what bodyweight training could offer.
The author's reliance on testimonial approval from participants of his web site does not lend credence to their objectivity or lack of conflict of interest.

Strength as a Skill.......2007-04-09
These great body exercises will get you into shape in no time. Lose the exercise equipment and learn how to use your own body to build your strength.
The Naked Warrior .......2007-04-01
This book is not suitable for anyone who is 50 years or older perhaps not even for much younger. I would have never ordered it had I known. All the exercises are most difficult, actually impossible, and could cause serious injury. I assure you, you will not be able to do anything in this book unless you are highly athletic already. This is a specialized application not for general everyday health/exercise nut like me.
The Naked Warrior.......2007-03-28
Good book with body exercises. Could have been shorter, and contained more variety though

Discovering the UDT.......2006-02-02
For a son of a former UDT this book opened my eyes wider than ever before to the dangers faced by my father and his shipmates of the UDT. The valor exhibited by these men while operating in broad dayight under emeny fire to aid in the landing of larger invasion forces is staggering. This book is excellent reading for anyone interested in one of our nations truely elite fighting units "the Underwater Demolition Teams".
Recommended.......2005-12-15
This book is the standard bearer for books about the UDTs. Well researched but written from personal experience, Fane does an excellent job of retelling the exploits of these admirable sailors. Recommended for anyone interested in NSW or WWII.

Book Description
In this folkloric examination of mass-produced material culture in the United States, Jeannie Banks Thomas examines the gendered sculptural forms that are among the most visible, including Barbie, Ken, and G.I. Joe dolls; yard figures (gnomes, geese, and flamingos); and cemetery statuary (angels, sports-related images, figures of the Virgin Mary, soldiers, and politicians).
Images of females are often emphasized or sexualized, frequently through nudity or partial nudity, whereas those of the male body are not only clothed but also armored in the trappings of action and aggression. Thomas locates these various objects of folk art within a discussion of the post-women's movement discourse on gender.
In addition to the items themselves, Thomas explores the stories and behaviors they generate, including legends of the supernatural about cemetery statues, oral narratives of yard artists and accounts of pranks involving yard art, narratives about children's play with Barbie, Ken, and G.I. Joe, and the electronic folklore (or "e-lore") about Barbie that circulates on the Internet.

Book Description
In this provocative and arresting book, Nanno Marinatos explores the role of the naked goddess and mistress of animals in Greek religion. She examines their eastern origins and discusses their dissemination throughout the mainland and Crete. She also analyses their function as magical devices which ward off evil and questions why a female god was the protectress of men rather than women.

excellent book for its intended purpose.......1999-05-27
I just used this book on a trip to Barcelona. It was one of two books that I used. This book allowed me to see many different thing in Barcelona in an organized and efficient manner. For anyone that is going to be wandering around spain and/or portugal, and spending just a few days in each place, this book is a must have.
Not worth the price........1999-04-18
Thank goodness on my recent trip to Portugal and Spain I brought along other travel books on the area. Unfortunately, this book is full of mis-information, particulary in the area of price. For example, often the most expensive hotel or restaurant in a town was rated with only one $.
Also an accurate driving map would have been a nice inclusion.
This is one book I didn't bother packing for my trip home.

Bufflalo Boring!!!! .......2007-05-08
I hated this book!!!! It's just about 2 kids and they wonder from place to place. This book is about Jack and Annie who go to the native times. It's not that interesting. But the series is that they just have to point to the book cover and say " I wish we could go there". Then the tree house teleports to the same place. There is a woman named Morgan who sends them there to find things like ( the four M's. Or 4 gifts). Then of course there going to find it and return home but....... when they come home time hasn't changed a bit. They go home and sleep. If you want to read the worst book ever in the world pick up this book today and you'll hate it. But if you want a good book then pick up " Magic Tree House #32" or anyother book in the "30's".
MY BOY LOVES READING IT.......2007-01-07
My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!
One of the best.......2006-11-10
Magic Treehouse books have been an excellent incentive for my 6 year old to read. At first I was reading them all to him, now he's reading them for himself. They are the perfect combination of adventure, education, and danger! This particular one is one of his favorites.
School Book Review.......2005-03-04
Would you ever want to be chased by a big buffalo? I read a book about two kids that did. It is called Buffalo Before Breakfast by Mary Pope Osborne. This book is about a boy named Jack, a girl named Annie and a dog named Teddy. They travel back in time. This story is also about the buffalo and Native Americans. This is a really cool book. One of my favorite parts is when they saw a huge heard of buffalo. I also liked this book because I am a child and I would like to travel back in time. In this book I think that the author wants to share what Native Americans used to do. You should read this book to see if Jack and Annie, along with Teddy, get back to their own time!
A Great Book.......2005-02-06

But things turn bad fast for Coly Jo, and Sura helplessly watches his friend's descent into hell, determined to escape with his own body and spirit intact -- if he can.Thirteen-year old Sura--intelligent, reckless, sensitive, and adrift--is serving a six-month sentence at Hamstock Juvenille Detention Center. Coping wiht the brutal pressures of life inside "the Stock," Sura helplessly watches his doomed bunkmate, Coly Jo, fall prey to the worst excesses of the prison system, and determines to escape with his own body and spirit intact--if he can.
Vivid, inspired, shocking, real, The Buffalo Tree is a linguistic tour-de-force that burns with rhythms and intensitty of the street--and the unexpected dreams and desired of those who live there.

Not about Buffalo's.......2006-03-03
The first thing I noticed after reading this book is that the back of the book is very misleading. It says how the main character Sura has to go through some kind of hell, but there is no hell in the book. I was very angry with this because I was hoping for some kind of demons or something. The book turned out to be about a boy named Sura getting sent of to the Hamstock Juvenile Detention for Boys. He is sent there for stealing hoodies. The author uses a lot of strange slang that is hard to understand. One of the main things I didn't like about the book is that it talked about boys in the shower, which is something I really don't ever want to read about.
This book wasn't interesting to me because it has no fantasy in it. I personally found the book very boring and hard to understand. There could have been a lot more detail in the book and the characters were dull and annoying to read about. I would not recommend this book for anyone that likes fantasy books because it is far from any book like that.
A haunting, lyrical story........2002-05-24
When twelve-year-old Sura got caught clipping hoodies, they slapped with a six-month sentence in Hamstock, a juvenile detention center. Most juvenile detention centers keep you until you've reformed. At Hamstock, they keep you until they feel like letting you go.
This book, written in the language of the street, details Sura serving time at the center with his patch mate and best friend Coly Jo, who got sent up for breaking into people's homes to watch them sleep. As Sura somehow breaks through the mire and rises to the top, Coly Jo is beaten down both physically and emotionally. At the end Sura is set free, and has learned to appreciate life at home with his mother, though I doubt he'll be there for long.
An excellent novel, once you learn to decipher the street slang. Not that the slang is bad; it adds to the credibility of the story and I learned lots of new words.
buffaloing.......2000-12-23
The book is a very boring book. But it has some scenes that are very interesting such as when the guys were in the shower and Boo and Hodge stabbed Demetrius Gord with a pencil. This book shows what happens when you go to juvy hall where you get treated like a prisoner. The boys have no freedom to do what they want or have fun. Some of the characters who were in the story such as Boo, Hodge, Long Neck and Coly Jo were very well played in the scenes that the author put them in. At the end of the story something very bad happens to a main character. I would recommend this book to people who like depressing stories.
most boring book ever.......2000-12-21
This was a very boring book. But I do have to say it does have some high points. In the beginning it was boring but toward the end it started to get better. The reason it was boring is because I didn't understand the slang words at first. But as I did, it got better and easier. I learned some new street words such as cripped, patch, patchmate, and cottage pops. One boring part of this book was when Sura got a new roommate, because they didn't fight or anything. And a few high points were when Coly Jo hit Mr. Rose over the head with a night table and the other one was when hodge and long neck got in a fight. Over all it was interesting to a point. I can honestly say I did learn something from this book.
The Buffalo Tree.......2000-12-21
The book is narrated by Sura, a 13 year old boys who is in hamstock, a juvenile detetion center. The book had some great lessons about life such as that friendship will never die and you should never give it up. It has alot of painful things such as when Sura found the squirrel tail buried in the ground, because it belonged to Coly Jo's, his friend. It also had some action such as when Sura was shadowing the guard and he almost got caught by the gaurd. The story was kind of hard to understand because of all of the slang invovled. It had alot of funny parts in the story too, such as when Sura was talking about Nurse Rushing and how Sura was making fun of Boo, Hodge, and Dean Petty. This book had alot of profanity and some were funny and others weren't. This book had alot of depressing moments too, like when Coly Jo was put in the stink hole. Coly Jo was a great friend to Sura. I really enjoyed this story and I would recommend this book to any teenager to read.

my child loved it.......2007-09-24
I purchased the Magic Tree House audio set because my four-year-old daughter is always asking me to tell her stories. Sometimes, I just can't get my imagination going, so I thought this would fill in my blank moments. And, in fact, it has done a wonderful job of it. We play them in the car while driving around. They really captivate my daughter. The subject matter is very interesting to children: dinosaurs, mummies, castles, pirates. The stories increased her interest in these areas.
The CDs have also given me new ideas for stories--using the characters from Magic Tree House--and in other ways stimulated creative interaction between us. They have increased her vocabulary as well.
It is also a great way to motivate her to get in the car when we had to leave: "Come on, let's go hear a story!", I say.
I also love the fact that they are not the Disney-fied, commercialized versions of stories. I intend to purchase all of Osbourne's Magic Tree House CD sets.
My one comment toward improvement would be to put each story on its own CD. This set has four stories on 3 CDs, which is not quite as convenient when wanting to locate/isolate a particular story.
Basics for Time Travel.......2005-04-27
When I was eight I read these books. I am now 12 and in 6th grade and i say these books are great.I recomend these for kids instresed in science or the world.I am currenly reading Stephen Hawking's " A breif History of time" which is a great and understandable book for anyone. These books inspied me to be a Theoretical Quantum physicist. it got me into the fasinating subject of time travel and Unifeild Feild theory. The boottm line is these books are filles with adventure and fun.
My Review of Ghost Town at Sundown.......2002-03-12
Since I like scary stories, I really, really liked this one. The best part was when they heard a ghost playing the piano. The ghost's name is Lonesome Luke.
Fins Up for Dolphins at Daybreak.......2001-10-21
My name is Grant. I am in third grade. Last week I read DOLPHINS AT DAYBREAK because it looked like a really exciting book. DOLPHINS is my favorite Magic Treehouse book so far. I have already read VIKING SHIPS AT SUNRISE and CIVIL WAR ON SUNDAY. I would give all of the Magic Treehouse books I have read 5 stars, but I like DOLPHINS best because I love dolphins and the submarine adventure was really exciting!!!
Here's a bit of what happened: Annie was curious about the mini-submarine and talked Jack into exploring it. Inside the sub Annie pushed the wrong button and it started to go down to the bottom of the sea. They saw an Octopus, which started to grab the submarine...they also saw a hammerhead shark...
That's all I will tell you or it will spoil the story for you.
Night of the Ninjas.......2001-10-11
Night of the Ninjas is easy to read with short chapters and pictures. This book can hold the interest of children from 8 on up. The characters are fun and children can relate to them. The characters are a brother and sister, so this book will be of interest to either boys or girls. I have found that the Magic Tree House Books make children want to learn more about history.
