Book Description
Monitoring Ecological Impacts provides the tools needed to design assessment programs that can reliably monitor, detect, and allow management of human impacts on the natural environment. The procedures described are well-grounded in inferential logic, and the statistical models needed to analyse complex data are given. Step-by-step guidelines and flow diagrams provide clear and useable protocols which can be applied in any region of the world, a wide range of human impacts, and any ecosystem. In addition, real examples are used to show how the theory can be put into practice.

Book Description
Environmental engineers, industrial ecologists, hazardous waste managers and other professionals within the environmental field recognize the importance of incorporating elements of risk assessment with life-cycle assessments. ,These analytical tools have become increasingly a part of environmental management practices. But until now this development has been ignored by textbook literature for graduate students and professionals. Integrated Life-Cycle and Risk Assessment for Industrial Processes covers the use of life-cycle assessment, risk assessment, and a combined framework of the two in the estimation of environmental damage, providing explanations of methods and descriptions of practical applications in the environmental analysis of industrial processes. The book opens by examining environmental strategies, then places life-cycle and risk assessment within an environmental toolbox, and explores the integration of the two methods via a case study. This volume is one of the first attempts to illustrate the interfaces between the tools and considers options for continued integration. The new communication between life-cycle assessment experts and risk assessment scientists results in a manual that is practical and useful in environmental analysis and decision making.

Book Description
The Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world, covering more than 365,00 kilometers of the central floodplains of Brasil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. This fragile ecosystem, dependent upon critical habitats and the flood cycle, is under threat from the silt runoff of deforested highlands and efforts by man to make the area navigable. This assessment, which discovered new species in the area, examines previously unexplored regions of the Pantanal--essential sanctuaries for migratory birds, critical nursery grounds for aquatic life, and refuges for such creatures as the black caiman, deer, and jaguar.

Book Description
The world's ecosystems are increasingly threatened by human development. Ecological impact assessment (EcIA) is used to predict and evaluate the impacts of development on ecosystems and their components, providing the information needed to ensure that ecological issues are given full and proper consideration in development planning. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) has emerged as a key to sustainable development by integrating social, economic and environmental issues in many countries. EcIA has a major part to play as a component of EIA but also has other potential applications in environmental planning and management.Ecological Impact Assessment provides a comprehensive review of the EcIA process and summarizes the ecological theories and tools which can be used to understand, explain and evaluate the ecological consequences of development proposals. It is intended for the many individuals and companies involved in EIA and EcIA, as well as other areas of environmental management where impacts on ecosystems need to be evaluated. It will benefit planners, regulators, environmental consultants and scientists and will also provide an invaluable source-book and guide for the growing number of undergraduate students taking courses in applied ecology, EIA and related topics in environmental science.

Book Description
Detecting Ecological Impacts: Concepts and Applications in Coastal Habitats focuses on crucial aspects of detecting local and regional impacts that result from human activities. Detection and characterization of ecological impacts require scientific approaches that can reliably separate the effects of a specific anthropogenic activity from those of other processes. This fundamental goal is both technically and operationally challenging.
Detecting Ecological Impacts is devoted to the conceptual and technical underpinnings that allow for reliable estimates of ecological effects caused by human activities. An international team of scientists focuses on the development and application of scientific tools appropriate for estimating the magnitude and spatial extent of ecological impacts. The contributors also evaluate our current ability to forecast impacts. Some of the scientific, legal, and administrative constraints that impede these critical tasks also are highlighted. Coastal marine habitats are emphasized, but the lessons and insights have general application to all ecological systems.

Book Description
Ecological assessments are a critical component of land management planning and regulatory decision-making. In the United States, for example, the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 directs that the environmental consequences associated with proposed management of federal lands be fully disclosed to the general public through environmental impact assessments. In a similar manner, over 40 other countries have legislated the use of some type of ecological assessment as a prerequisite for effective environmental planning and land management. Although ecological assessments can be conducted at a variety of spatial scales and may address one or many issues, the main intent of this book is to describe topics with particular importance to strategic integrated ecological assessments at a regional or subregional scale. The chapters in this book range from overviews of basic ecological principles, to suggestions concerning ecosystem characterization and analysis, to systematic reviews of selected case studies. In this respect, the book provides both theoretical and practical advice for future ecological assessments given specific land use planning objectives. This book will be the reference standard for any person engaged in any ecological assessment exercise at any level, whether they work for national, state or regional authorities or in academia.
Book Description
Learn the secrets of shooting a handgun quickly and accurately under the extreme stress of a gunfight. These cutting-edge techniques for managing recoil in rapid fire, high-speed trigger control and more are used by today's hostage rescue teams and competitive grandmasters.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-07-29
I am an IPSC shooter so I'd just like to say don't let the title throw you, this is a great book for anyone who does IDPA or Production Class IPSC, the techniques is this book are excellent and the book is well set out with separate chapters for Grip, Stance, Trigger control etc. I found the chapter on trigger control especially good as a fellow Glock lover it worked very well for me, I have a lot of shooting books in my library but this is the one I come back to whenever I critique my techniques... stance, grip etc.
The only thing I didn't like is position sul but that's a personal preference - it probably works well for a tactical operator but as a competition shooter it's not really necessary.
The Basics pure and simple........2007-07-05
I was new to handgun shooting and was getting very frustrated trying to improve with no lessons or direction.
Surgical Speed shooting was the answer. It covered the basics in simple language along with pictures to show what they are talking about. I'm now putting 90% of my shots "in the black" from 21 feet. Shooting is really fun. I started slowly with accuracy and have quickly increased my speed......with accuracy. Buy it, you won't be dissapointed. Thanks Andy Stanford!
gun craft.......2007-06-27
if you have never read a book or attended a school on gunfighting this is as good a place as any to start. depending on your military back ground or even law enforcement it's not bad. this book is well written and a good basic starting point to start from. That being said let me tell you what the definitive book is;Mr. Erik Lawrence; "tactical pistol shooting" if you have no training and no background then start with Stanford's book.
Don't let the word "gunfight" put you off.......2007-06-15
Very good review of the basics of shooting technique for use in IDPA and IPSC. I wish that there was more on practice drills but has some great pointers to improving your shooting or just moving on from the old "Weaver" stance.
Good Book for Beginners.......2007-06-13
Only complaint with book is waaaaaaaaaay too much time spent bashing the "weaver stance" and praising the "isosceles method". Bottom line, there is no magic position. Other than that, pretty good information, especially for new shooters.
