        Book Description

Latinos are dramatically changing the demographic profile of the United States. Developing a strong command of the Spanish language is not a realistic goal for most health care providers wishing to establish rapport with their Latino patients. Yet, growing numbers of health professionals are realizing the importance of understanding Latino cultural values as they impact the clinical encounter. Such knowledge can enhance their ability to communicate with and treat Latino patients effectively and respectfully. The Latino Patient provides an in-depth exploration of Latino diversity; relevant cultural values; health status, beliefs and practices; and effective communication strategies. The author has developed an original, practice-oriented model that leads the health practitioner from greeting the patient to ultimately negotiating treatment. The book is hands-on, providing numerous illustrative vignettes gleaned from the author's experience.

5 out of 5 stars A practical and useful tool for any health care provider.......2002-09-21

This is a much needed resource that is finally available. The strength of this book is the focus on health care practice, and the vignettes illustrating Latino cultural values in the clinical setting. The first part provides valuable insight into the familistic Latino culture. The second part is a gem, translating this information into practical vignettes in realistic situations. It will be an invaluable tool in my practice.

In 2003, Latinos became the largest minority group in the United States and according to the Census Bureau they will represent close to 25 percent of the population by 2050. Latinos currently have the highest rate of employment of any U. S. minority and in five years their role in the American labor force will be even more prominent than it is now. Latino Culture is the first book to fully explore the nuances of Latino culture in the workplace.

Written by Nilda Chong - recently named as one of 80 "Elite Latinas" by Hispanic Business magazine - and Francia Baez, Latino Culture is for mainstream managers, supervisors, and employees who work with Latinos. First-generation Latinas and successful professionals, Chong and Baez bring a profound understanding of the experience of working with Latinos as well as working as Latinos in the United States.

Chong and Baez provide valuable insights into key aspects of Latino Culture, such as: -Latino values: personalismo, simpatia, respeto and more -Communication styles, personal distance, self-disclosure, disagreements -Gender issues in the workplace: machismo, marianismo and paternalism -Relationship to supervisors, to coworkers and to employees -The issue of speaking Spanish at work -Striking differences in behavior and experience between generations

Colorful vignettes, real life stories and Cultural Pointers reveal the diversity of Latino culture, illuminating differences in values, education, country of origin and many other factors. Latino Culture celebrates an extremely diverse and important population.

The research appears to be thorough. But the overall presentation is lacking. To be fair, the concept of Latino Culture and how it affects professional relationships could take volumes of material and years of experience to fully understand. Unfortunately this book does a poor job of delivering the key points that I should be able to take away from the time spent reading it.

          Book Description

It may be the most collected muscle car in history. The Ford Mustang captured the hearts and minds of the American public in 1964 with its stunning introduction. Originally designed to be an economy car of sorts, targeted to young females, the Ford Mustang quickly became the muscle car of choice for many teens and young men.

As one of the industry's longest-lasting models, many people collect the Ford Mustang. With the car changing over the years, but often remaining true to its heritage, owners all have their favorite era of Mustangs. For the Mustang owner, or for someone considering the purchase and restoration of this classic muscle car, Peter and Nilda Sessler have put together a definitive guide on the subject.

From the first Mustang in 1964, which some consider a 1964-1/2 model year, others a 1965 model, to the latest 2006 model, this book provides a buyer's guide for each and every year. Chapters on restoration are also included, covering engine, drivetrain, bodywork, interior, and detailing.

Topics addressed include: Buyers Guide • Restoration Guide • Parts Sources Performance Engines • Special Cars

Includes a full-color CD-ROM with hundreds of photos from the author's personal collection of Ford Mustang photos!

The Mustang represents the difference between cars designed by financial types from those designed by car types. Just before the Mustang the need for smaller cars became clear. McNamara was in charge of Ford and his answer was the Falcon. I don't know of many people who think the Falcon was the high point of Ford's history. Lee Iacocca took the basic Falcon, put new skins on it and the Mustang was born. We are now in another period where the financial types are in charge, and the blah cars and the red ink coming out of Detroit show it. ==It's been forty years since the Mustang came out in 1964, and even the original ones still look great. In fact you might argue that the originals were the best of any of the Mustangs that followed. ==This book spends over half of its pages describing the various Mustangs that were built. The back of the book talks about restoration. But don't expect details on how to restore a car. This part covers things like maintenance and where to get parts. It is fairly general in nature. After all, things like rebuilding an engine would take a whole book by itself.

          Book Description

This is a story of resistance against all odds, of Cuba's remarkable recovery from a food crisis brought on by the collapse of trade relations with the former socialist bloc and the tightening of the U.S. embargo. Unable to import either food or the farm chemicals and machines needed to grow it via conventional agriculture, Cuba turned inward toward self-reliance. Sustainable agriculture, organic farming, urban gardens, smaller farms, animal traction and biological pest control are part of the successful paradigm shift underway in the Cuban countryside. In this book Cuban authors offer details-for the first time in English-of these remarkable achievements, which may serve as guideposts toward healthier, more environmentally friendly and self-reliant farming in countries both North and South.

As a practitioner of sustainable agriculture and organic farming (I am a farmer, teacher and researcher) I found this story of how Cuba used organic farming to beat all odds and overcome a food crisis to be awe inspiring. Every professor, teacher, researcher, analyst, student, thinking farmer and advocate of sustainable agriculture MUST read this book. It will restore your hope. So should everyone interested in Cuba, Latin America, and Third World development. I loved to read it in the cuban's own, well-translated words.

Cuba has done an amazing job of switching over to organic, local food production. They did so to survive the assinine embargo of thier island, but in doing so they have shown the way for all of us to move to a sane mode of food production. You would want this book to be a delightful description of that process. You would be wrong. It is a leaden, tedious exercise in socialist writing with all the wit and charm of a phone book. Skip the book and just go to Cuba and see the results for yourself. Then come home and plant a garden.

          5 out of 5 stars Nilda Review.......2002-03-28

Nilda, written by Nicholasa Mohr is set in the early 1940's. It details the life of a little Puerto Rican girl who lives in a poor neighborhood in New York City that she she calls the "Barrio". Nilda deals with many of life's problems including racism, death, relationships and many more. Race is a fairly large issue for Nilda. Nilda learns and matures greatly throughout this book. Travel through the life and eyes of Nilda as she tries to deal with her crazy family. Her family includes her step dad Emilio, her mother Lydia, her great Aunt Delia, her oldest brother Jimmy, Victor, Paul, and finally Frankie. Nilda is the youngest. Nicholasa's writingis very detailed without being overly specific. Nicholasa uses simple words and phrases to make the reader understand, yet the images she portrays are unbelievabe. The imagination of a young mind such as Nilda made this book a refreshing read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes biographies.

5 out of 5 stars an unpretentious and realistic story.......2001-09-13

Finally, I get to read a young adult coming-of-age book that doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't! It isn't a grandiose book of romance and drugs and wonder, with the teenager becoming a hero or tragic hero. It's just a simple story of a poor New York born Puerto Rican girl hitting her adolescence during WWII, a story of love, pain, fear, discrimination, poverty, abuse, narrow-minded immigrants, relationship problems, puberty, desire for upward mobility - but none of it told in the sensational or overly dramatic way of so many young adult books. It's simple, to the point, discreet. It reminds me of that statement some famous movie director said about another director: "He showed us more with a closed door than most directors do with an open zipper." It was a book I could enjoy. It didn't have a strong plot, but it had powerful flesh-and-blood character with hearts and desires. I would say that the main character struck me as depressed, and actually, you might say most or all of the people in the book - or perhaps the culture at the time - walked around in a cloud of low-level depression.

Although I gave the book five stars, it wasn't the kind of book that sets stars blazing in the sky. It was just a no-nonsense and no-frills portrayal of a time, a place, and a culture... I would whole-heartedly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Nilda is for no doubt an excellent book........1999-08-01

The book Nilda was an excellent book that touched right through to me. The vivid descriptions of each and every scene in the book was very helpful to the reader to understand the book better and to feel that you are really inside the story. The way Nicholasa Mohr described the little Puerto Rican girl Nilda's feelings was very interesting, Nicolasa went straight to the little girl's heart and told everything. Overall, this is an exceptional story about hardship and discrimination that could be faced by everyday people.

5 out of 5 stars An engaging look at growing up Puerto Rican in New York.......1998-12-09

          N. Mohr's story of a young girl Puerto Rican girl growing up in New York, provides a poignant, often funny look at some of the issues faced by Boricuas living in the U.S. Issues such as race, religion, and machismo are all treated in the work. In fact, one of the distinguishing characteristics of this book is the manner in which such potentially sensitive issues are treated.
