Book Description

In his stirring biography, Frederick Turner, the distinguished writer and cultural historian, captures the legendary scale of the life of an American icon. Immigrant, inventor, botanist, and founder of the conservation movement, John Muir (1838-1914) truly led those of his time-and now ours-to rediscover the natural beauty of this land. From his harsh childhood in Scotland and on a Wisconsin pioneer farm, to his rugged, solitary explorations all over America and especially in the Sierras, to his passionate battle, in person and in his writings, to save and celebrate our wilderness, Muir was a heroic figure. Turner's biography is every bit as monumental and inspiring as its subject.

2 out of 5 stars John Muir Knew Nature, But Not The Nature Of Himself.......2006-12-17

This book, like most biographies, is shallow. Turner paints a stilted, idealized portrait of John Muir that at best can only satisfy readers who aren't that hungry to look into the depths of themselves.

Turner wrongly portrays Muir as a grand philosopher. Although in his youth Muir was a passionate seeker spurred forward by his deep dissatisfaction, he never remotely succeeded on the quest to know his own inner perfection. Thus his philosophy is limited. The closest he came to finding perfection was in the beauty of Nature, and while he was quite right about the perfection he found there - and of our need to conserve it! - it only represented the true beauty that lay buried and smothered in his depths. Muir never figured out that his love for Nature was but a metaphor for the love he couldn't feel for himself.

Muir spent his early manhood trying to heal the inner wounds of the horrendous aspects of his childhood. He grew up with a monster for a father and with a mother who offered little protection, much as Turner portrayed her as an ideal parent. Unable from the beginning to find his true peace through inner connection, Muir became a master at finding temporary peace in external dissociation - first with his inventions and then with his disappearances into the wilderness.

Muir wrote, "I care to live only to entice people to look at Nature's loveliness. My own special self is nothing." He truly meant this. He put little or no value on his own true self - just as his abusive, neglectful childhood taught him. Had he found his true connection within he would never have been so repeatedly suicidal with his life, as exhibited by his countless dangerous and largely purposeless acts which nearly killed him several times. Although he defended his insane behavior as educational, this was clearly rationalization. In reality he was acting out - and his searches were poisoned with compulsive, unconscious motivations.

Muir's immaturity and lack of spiritual development is further evidence by the fact that after he'd done most of his intense ramblings and journeying he simply married into a new family - his wife's - and disappeared into their conventional family system. He gave up his quest for truth and settled instead for becoming a wealthy farmer, an enmeshed family man, a semi-present father, and an ardent conservationist.

This shines the light on the main error of Muir's life, in spite of all the good he might have done with his conservation: he never realized that he himself and all we humans are a part of Nature. We are Human Nature. We may be destroying our world around us, but the deepest answer lies within our hearts, not in the woods.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography and Environmental Treatise.......2001-09-20

I've often been fascinated by John Muir, ever since I started visiting many different national parks out west and seeing his name cited everywhere as an inspiration. If you are interested in environmental ethics and theory (as opposed to simplistic tree-hugging and other poorly-considered theories), and if you have a primal love for the outdoors, then John Muir is your man. Here Frederick Turner has written a solid biography of the man, with all the research and articulation that should be expected. Turner also includes a large dose of Muir's opinions and theories, as well as the historical and political background behind Muir's actions and thought processes. Therefore, what we have here is not just an informative biography on the public person, but an enlightening treatise on environmental ethics and theory, as defined by the brilliant mind of Muir himself.

5 out of 5 stars Mind-opening and fascinating.......2001-03-06

I finished this book about a week ago. Despite moving on to subsequent reading material, I find that there are parts of Turner's book that I simply can't stop thinking on. For me, they are what makes John Muir's life and legacy so important.

There is about a three or four page segment at the end of the chapter entitled "Civilization and Its Discontents," in which Turner presents what appears to be a sea change in America's conception of itself. The change is fundamental in that it consists of a shift from the intellectual and human promise of America as seen through the eyes of Emerson and Thoreau, to the promise of power, wealth, and machines. That is, at one point, people, and their potential for growth and good, were at the center of the American dream. Yet, at some point in the Nineteenth century (possibly at the time of the Civil War) money and wealth became the American dream.

Turner is the not the first person to present this argument, as he himself notes. Nor am I certain that his take on this cultural shift is entirely accurate. However, I do think it points out the value that Muir had, and his intellectual descendants have, in directing the national attention back in the direction from which it came--not so much that we should live for nature, but that we should live for people.

As for the rest of the book, I found it enjoyable if not without problems. Turner's presentation of Muir's life, including the emotions and conceptualizations that he imagines for him, is thoroughly engaging and seems quite complete. The only problems I encountered are that Turner seems to run out of steam at the end, seeming to skip years of Muir's life at a time, and that Turner has an interesting use of commas in that he doesn't use them very often.

If you read this, and I think you should, you'll probably be as interested in reading Muir's own writings as I am.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and beautifully written.......2001-02-19

I enjoyed this book very much. Until now I've only read short articles about Muir, so I am not qualified to comment on Turner's accuracy or how comprehensive his book is. But I can tell you it is beautifully written, evoking the world that Muir inhabited... or better yet, the worlds. Because Turner follows the boy John Muir from Scotland to Wisconsin, and then takes us along on all the adult John Muir's extensive travels. We learn about this majestic life that's as full of crags and crannies as the mountains he so loved. And we are left with no doubt about his genius and his incalculable importance to the America we live in today.

The book has some pretty pictures and a very basic overview of the park in winter, but is geared very much toward SUV-travelers with plenty of cash and credit cards. Most of the information in this book can be learned from the free pamphlets you get at the park (or they'll send them to you). If you're looking for a more in-depth and personal experience, this book won't help you much.

Just out of high school and already washed up?

          Customer Reviews:

          3 out of 5 stars Baseball Slump.......2007-07-04

Dean, just finished with his senior year in high school, isn't sure what to do with his life. For the past few years it all seemed so clear to him--when he was a freshman he was a baseball phenomenon, playing varsity for his high school and scaring the heck out of guys much older than he was. His sophomore year was just as spectacular, and college recruiters and major league teams were already looking at him and talking about him.

Then, in Dean's junior year, he fell into a slump. An injured arm set him back a bit and he just couldn't seem to find his rhythm. He had a miserable season, followed by another miserable season his senior year. No baseball scouts looked at him anymore. No scholarship offers came in from any colleges.

Now the summer after high school, Dean is in limbo. He has a job house-sitting so he is living on his own, away from his parents, gaining independence and deciding what he wants to do. His former coach and secondary father figure has a friend who is starting up a baseball team at a small private college, and Dean has been offered a trial scholarship--full tuition, room and board for one semester, with an extension if his baseball game comes back. Dean is torn. Should he try to start over a new life without baseball in it, or should he take the scholarship offer and risk failing again?

I liked Dean's indecision. It was realistic to me that he would be reluctant to take another chance on a baseball team after two years of disappointment. I also liked Dean's relationship with Jack and Shilo; they gave him support that he obviously needed.

I thought Dean was far too casual about things, though, especially in his relationship with Karin. He seemed to really like her, but at the same time he didn't care if she liked him back or was exclusively dating him. I also thought Jack's relationship with his son was crummy, and I thought it was crummy of Dean to take over as a surrogate son.

          A Review by Corey

Dean Duffy is a young adult just out of high school. He was an awesome baseball player his freshman and sophomore years, the he went in to a huge slump his junior and senior years. He could never figure out why. But over the summer he is offered a full scholarship to a college he'd never even heard of. Almost the entire summer he is apartment sitting and doing a little work just to make enough to keep him alive. Not doing much gave him a lot of time to think about what he is going to do with the rest of his life and if he really wants to accept the scholarship.

This is an excellent book that allows the reader to connect with it very much (Especially if you are a baseball player). It is very realistic and there are many conflicts that are similar to the world as it is today. The characters definitely keep you in the story because if you are a high school student I'm sure you know what people just like them, such as stoners, arrogant people, and the kind of people who are willing to do anything for you because they believe in you so much. The pace is very nice and you don't get lost from quick changes in characters.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves to play baseball or is just in the mood for a good book because you can relate to almost all of Dean Duffy's problems.

4 out of 5 stars Jeremy Peckovitch Dean Duffy.......2002-10-22

The book I read was called Dean Duffy. It is written by Randy Powell. I choose this book because I like Randy Powell's books. I also liked it because it was a baseball book and I like baseball alot.
The main character in the book is Dean Duffy. He is a high school legend. But his last two seasons weren't too good. So he sets out to find what he is worth. So he takes an apartment sitting job in Seattle. There he meets up with some old friends that he was teammates with back in high school. He also meets this girl named Karin in a fast food restaurant. He gets together with her and goes out on a couple of dates with her.
While he is in Seattle this coach from Shute College named Dick Dargo gives him a one semester scholarship to play baseball but if he proves him self he will get a full scholarship. So this puts even more pressure on him because he likes Karin. So he tries to put off everything in his life so he won't have so much pressure on him. So when it was time to make his decision he chooses to.......
The author used a lot of literary elements in his book. One of them was foreshadowing for example Dean said " I wonder what would happen if I did accept the scholarship maybe I will become pro or maybe it will just be a waste of my time."
I would recommend this book to about almost everyone who like baseball books because I really liked it alot. The only bad thing about the book was the ending and if you were to read it think you will think the same way I do about the book.

4 out of 5 stars A hard luck sport story.......1999-11-02

The book Dean Duffy is a good book. It is about a high school baseball player who is a superstar until his junior-year slump. He has to make a lot of decisions in this story, like which college to attend or whether or not to attend a college at all. This is a good book for sport fans, and people who like to see how other people solve problems.

Transform Methods for Solving Partial Differential Equations illustrates the use of Laplace, Fourier, and Hankel transforms to solve partial differential equations encountered in science and engineering. This second edition is expanded to provide a broader perspective on the applicability and use of transform methods. It classifies the problems presented in every chapter by type of region, coordinate system and partial differential equation. Many of the problems included in the book are illustrated to show the reader what they will look like physically. Unlike many mathematics texts, this book provides a step-by-step analysis of problems taken from the actual scientific and engineering literature.

2 out of 5 stars Tranform methods for solving partial differential equations.......2006-03-20

This book presents solutions of a broad range of problems arising in electric, mechanic and civil engineering and formalized in (generalized) linear, partial differential equations.

This book gives a short introduction into the mathematical foundation of the tools used. It lacks a definition of "transform methods" and their algebraic properties. Thereby it does not tell the reader, why transform methods are appropriate for the presented problems and superior to other approaches, what they are indeed.

Though the bibliography mentions authors from the early 18th century to now some important have not been included, like Doetsch.

Mr. Doetsch, famous for his "Laplace Transformation", published a similiar sampler in the late sixties of the last century. Most of the examples presented by Duffy to show the usage of Fourier and Laplace transformation seem to be taken from Doetsch.

This book seems not sufficient for teaching, as it does neither derive the ideas from a well formalized foundation, nor does it develop the solutions from that well formalized foundation. Too often deus ex macchina has been applied and the very question remains: Why?

This book does neither seem to be suited as a cook book, as the solved problems have not been indexed.

My personal impression of this book is completed by the first, obvious error on page xiii: \delta(t-a) should be infinite for t=a, not t=0, and \delta(t-a) should be zero for t <>a, not t <>0.

          Best regards, Hans Adams

Transform Methods for Solving Partial Differential Equations, Second Edition by Dean G. Duffy (Chapman & Hall/CRC) illustrates the use of Laplace, Fourier, and Hankel transforms to solve partial differential equations encountered in science and engineering.
Transform methods provide a bridge between the commonly used method of separation variables and numerical techniques for solving linear partial differential equations. While in some ways similar to separation of variables and numerical transform methods can be effective for a wider class of problems. Even when the inverse of the transform cannot be found analytically, numeric and asymptotic techniques now exist for their inversion. Because the problem retains some of its analytic aspects, one can gain greater physical insight than typically obtained from a purely numerical approach.
Transform Methods for Solving Partial Differential Equations, Second Edition illustrates the use of Laplace, Fourier, and Hankel transforms to solve partial differential equations encountered in science and engineering. The author has expanded the second edition to provide a broader perspective on the applicability and use of transform methods and incorporated a number of significant refinements:
          New in the Second Edition:
          * Expanded scope that includes numerical methods and asymptotic techniques for inverting particularly complicated transforms
          * Discussions throughout the book that compare and contrast transform methods with separation of variables, asymptotic methods, and numerical techniques Many added examples and exercises taken from a wide variety of scientific and engineering sources
          * Nearly 300 illustrations - many added to the problem sections to help readers visualize the physical problems
          * A revised format that makes the book easier to use as a reference: problems are classified according to type of region, type of coordinate system, and type of partial differential equation
          * Updated references, now arranged by subject
While the subject matter is classical, this fresh, modern treatment that is exceptionally practical, eminently and especially valuable to anyone solvying problems in engineering
Purpose. This book illustrates the use of Laplace, Fourier and Hankel transforms for solving linear partial differential equations that are encountered in engineering and sciences. To this end, this new edition features updated references as well as many new examples and exercises taken from a wide variety of sources. Of particular importance is the inclusion of numerical methods and asymptotic techniques for inverting particularly complicated transforms.
Transform methods provide an alternative and bridge between the commonly employed methods of separation of variables and numerical methods in solving linear partial differential equations. The relationship between the techniques grouped as: Numerical
Techniques, Separation of Variables, Transform Methods and Asymptotic Analysis.
Transform methods are similar to separation of variables because they often yield closed form solutions via the powerful method of contour integration. Indeed, all of the results from separation of variables could also be derived using transform methods. Moreover, transform methods can handle a wider class of problems, such as those involving time-dependent boundary conditions, where separation of variables would fail.
Even in those cases when the inverse of the transform cannot be found analytically, transform methods can still be used profitably. A wide variety of numerical and asymptotic methods now exist for their inversion. Because some analytic aspects of the problem are retained, it is easier to obtain greater physical insight than from a purely numerical approach.
Prerequisites. The book assumes the usual undergraduate sequence of mathematics in engineering or the sciences: the traditional calculus and differential equations. A course in complex variables and Fourier and Laplace transforms is also essential. Finally some knowledge of Bessel functions is desirable to completely understand the book.
Audience. This book may be used as either a textbook or a reference book for applied physicists, geophysicists, civil, mechanical or electrical engineers and applied mathematicians.
Chapter Overview. The purpose of Chapter 1 is two-fold. The first four sections (and Section 1.7) serve as a refresher on the background material: linear ordinary differential equations, transform methods and complex variables., The amount of time spent with this material depends upon the background of the class. At least one class period should be spent on each section. Section 1.5 and Section 1.6 cover multivalued complex functions. These sections can be omitted if you only plan to teach Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. Otherwise, several class periods will be necessary to master this material because most students have never seen it. Due to the complexity of the problems, it is suggested that take-home problems are given to test the student's knowledge.
Chapter 2 through Chapter 5 are the meat-and-potatoes of the book.
The material is subdivided according to whether we invert a single-valued or multivalued transform. Each chapter is then subdivided into two parts. The first part deals with simply the mechanics of how to invert the transform while the second part actually applies the transform methods to solving partial differential equations. Undergraduates with a strong mathematics background should be able to handle Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 while Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 are really graduate-level material. The constant theme is the repeated application of the residue theorem to invert Fourier and Laplace transforms.
In Chapter 6 we solve partial differential equations by repeated applications of transform methods. We are now in advanced topics and this material is really only suitable for graduate students. The first two sections are straightforward, brute-force applications of Laplace and Fourier transforms in solving partial differential equations where we hope that we can invert both transforms to find the solution. Section 6.3 and Section 6.4 are devoted to the very clever inversion techniques of Cagniard and De Hoop. For too long this interesting work has been restricted to the seismic, acoustic and electrodynamic communities.
In Chapter 7 we treat the classic Wiener-Hopf problem. This is very difficult material because of the very complicated analysis that is usually involved. Duffy breaks the chapter into two parts: Section 7.1 deals with finite domains while Section 7.2 applies to infinite and semi-infinite domains.
Features. This is an unabashedly applied book because the intended audience is problem solvers in engineering and the applied sciences. However, references are given to other books that do cover any unproven point, should the reader be interested. Also Duffy tries to give some human touch to this field by including references to the original works and photographs of some of the leading figures.
It is always difficult to write a book that satisfies both the student and the researcher. The student usually wants all of the gory details while the researcher wants the answer now. Duffy tries to accommodate both by centering most of the text around examples of increasing difficulty. There are plenty of details for the student, but the researcher may quickly leaf through the examples to find the material that interests him.
As anyone who has taken a course knows, the only way that you know a subject is by working the problems. For that reason Duffy has included several hundred well-crafted problems, most of which were taken from the scientific and engineering literature. When possible, these problems are grouped according to some common property - such as a cylindrical domain. Because many of these problems are difficult, The author has included detailed solutions to most of them. The student is asked however to refrain from looking at the solution before he has really tried to solve it on his own. No pain; no gain. The remaining problems have intermediate results so that the student has confidence that he is on the right track. The researcher also might look at these problems because his problem might already have been solved.
A new feature of this book is the inclusion of sections on the numerical in-version of Laplace, Hankel and Fourier transforms. I have included MATLAB code for the reader's use. A quick glance at the scripts reveals their "Fortran"-like structure. This was done for a reason. For those who know MATLAB well, it is easy to optimize the scripts using MATLAB syntax. For the Fortran and C crowd, the scripts are easily convertible into those languages.
Finally, an important aspect of this book is the numerous references that can serve as further grist for the student or point the researcher toward a solution of his problem. Of course, we must strike a balance between having a book of references and leaving out some interesting papers. The criteria for inclusion were three-fold. First, the paper had to have used the technique and not merely chanted the magic words; quoting results was unacceptable. Second, the papers had to compute both the forward and inverse transforms. The use of asymptotic or numerical methods to invert the transform excluded the reference.

          Book Description

This text/reference covers essential areas of engineering mathematics involving single, multiple, and complex variations. Taken as a whole, this book provides a succinct, carefully organized guide for mastering engineering mathematics.Unlike typical textbooks, Advanced Engineering Mathematics begins with a thorough exploration of complex variables because they provide powerful techniques for understanding topics, such as Fourier, Laplace and z-transforms, introduced later in the text. The book contains a wealth of examples, both classic problems used to illustrate concepts, and interesting real-life examples from scientific literature.Ideal for a two-semester course on advanced engineering mathematics, Advanced Engineering Mathematics is concise and well-organized, unlike the long, detailed texts used to teach this subject. Since almost every engineer and many scientists need the skills covered in this book for their daily work, Advanced Engineering Mathematics also makes an excellent reference for practicing engineers and scientists.

          2 out of 5 stars Less practice.......2003-08-05

You can learn a lot of mathematics in this book but nothing about MATLAB. There is no good practice in this book.
A hint for the author. Try to make a CD-ROM with all examples on it. So everyone can get familiar with MATLAB and the surface. Best would be to double or triple the number of examples. (good examples in MATLAB Code)
Rethink it and I will be the first who buys the improved edition of this book otherwise you only have to change the title in :Advanced Engineering Mathematics pictures by MATLAB.
          Thanks for reading.

The book organizes several complex topics in a very intuitive and logical manner, which makes it a good reference book for engineering students. A detailed section on statistics would have been helpful.

            Book Description

For most scientists and engineers, the only analytic technique for solving linear partial differential equations is separation of variables. In Transform Methods for Solving Partial Differential Equations, the author uses the power of complex variables to demonstrate how Laplace and Fourier transforms can be harnessed to solve many practical, everyday problems experienced by scientists and engineers. Unlike many mathematics texts, this book provides a step-by-step analysis of problems taken from scientific and engineering literature. Detailed solutions are given in the back of the book. This essential text/reference draws from the latest literature on transform methods to provide in-depth discussions on the joint transform problem, the Cagniard-de Hoop method, and the Wiener-Hopf technique. Some 1,500 references are included as well.
