First launched in 1983, Annapolis remains the sailor's bible, a comprehensive chapter and verse guide to all aspects of seamanship from the simplest ABC's to the most advanced skills and latest electronics. And while much of the original edition has been left in dry dock to make way for the many changes on the water since 1983--like multihull vessels, satellite tracking, and the reality that while all ships remain "she," there is no longer the assumption that it's a "he" at the helm--Rousmaniere still emphasizes what he's stressed from the first tack: the importance of mastering sailing's fundamentals. This means knowing every inch of your boat and how to handle her, understanding the importance of safety on the seas and preparing for all emergencies, reading the weather, learning to navigate, knowing essential boat maintenance, and being aware of the traditions every sailor steps into whenever he or she sticks feet in a pair of topsiders. Clearly organized and presented, cleanly and smoothly written (given how much technical information he presents, Rousmaniere's prose is blessedly jargon-free), and thoroughly illustrated with photos and drawings, Annapolis is as essential as a good wind, perhaps the one volume no sailor should leave port without. --Jeff Silverman

    Book Description

Since the publication of the widely hailed first edition in 1983, The Annapolis Book of Seamanship has set the standard by which other books on sailing are measured. Used throughout America as a textbook in sailing schools and Power Squadrons, The Annapolis Book of Seamanship thoroughly and clearly covers the fundamental and advanced skills of modern sailing. This edition of Annapolis is a major overhaul. Over half the book has been revised; old topics and features have been updated, and many new ones have been introduced. The design has been modernized, and many color illustrations have been added.

As big and detailed as Annapolis is, the wealth of technical information (including dozens of step-by-step instructions) is presented here in a way that is uniquely readable; it's both useful and easy to use. This is because John Rousmaniere and artist Mark Smith bring to Annapolis decades of experience both as sailors and as professional communicators.

Annapolis emphasizes the standard skills and proven methods that eliminate error and confusion, ensure security in emergencies, and allow every sailor more time for enjoyment on the water. Much has changed on the water since 1983 when this book was originally published. Black buoys are now green, the Global Positioning Satellite navigation system (GPS) is almost universally used, new types of anchors and sails have appeared, safety skills and gear are vastly improved, many more women are commanding boats, and catamarans and trimarans are common where only monohulls used to sail.

But for all these modern developments, the basic skills and spirit of sailing have not changed at all. Sail trimming, keeping up steerageway, maintaining the dead reckoning plot, heaving-to -- these fundamentals are as important now as ever and receive much attention here. Among the innovations in this edition are:

    * Basic skills in early chapters: Fundamental sailing and boat-handling skills and gear, which are introduced in chapters 1, 2, and 3.
    * "Hands On" segments: Three dozen special sections, each devoted to a particular seamanship problem and an expert solution.
    * More how-to tips: Additional rules of thumb that guide a crew quickly and successfully through seamanship problems.
    * New coverage of multihulls: Advice on evaluating, anchoring, and handling catamarans and trimarans under sail (including in storms).
    * More on emergencies: New material on emergencies, safety, and heavy-weather sailing, including a section on preparing a docked boat for a hurricane.
    * Equipment updates: Expanded coverage of the use and care of modern gear and hardware, including radar, GPS, rescue devices, and asymmetrical spinnakers.
    * Terminology: Full definition and illustration of major terms when they're first introduced, with alternative language provided in parentheses.
    * Gender: The use of feminine personal pronouns, which reflect the fact that more women are captaining and sailing boats than ever before.

From navigation and seamanship to boat and gear maintenance, from pleasure cruising to heavy-weather sailing, here is the definitive, state-of-the-art guide that provides systematic step-by-step techniques to see you through every situation on deck and in the cockpit.

5 out of 5 stars The Annapolis Book of Seamanship.......2007-08-23

Reading this book will shorten any sailor's learning curve. It covers all aspects of the sport. John Rousmanierehas compiled an amazing reference/textbook that is interesting, informative and invaluable. I highly recommend this book to sailors at all levels of proficiency. Thank you Mr. Rousmaniere for this wonderful resource.

5 out of 5 stars Covers all basic and intermediate seamanship knowledge.......2006-12-28

Great book for acquiring basic and intermediate seamanship knowledge. Also very useful as reference for refreshing your knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars One Hand For Yourself, One Hand For The Ship.......2006-07-27

THE ANNAPOLIS BOOK OF SEAMANSHIP by John Rousmaniere is the ur-text on sailing used by virtually every sailing school as its primary educational source. Now in its third edition, this eminently readable and well illustrated book is encyclopedic in its scope, crammed full of practical information about sailing vessels, the mechanics of sailing them, and the traditions of sailing. It's a measure of the excellence of THE ANNAPOLIS BOOK OF SEAMANSHIP how familiarly Rousmaniere presents this largely alien topic with its many very specialized terms of art.

Rousmaniere wisely eschews most of the romance of sailing in favor of much more important considerations, such as boat care, boat handling, and especially safety at sea. Sailing may be enjoyable and it may be challenging, but it is also a dangerous avocation by its very nature, and the author never lets "salty talk" befog that issue. This is NOT a quick reference book for those who want to hoist the jolly roger and give no quarter while tied to the dock; this is a bible for serious SAILORS, whether on the local lake, Puget Sound or the South China Sea

While it can't give you the hands-on experience that being before the mast confers, THE ANNAPOLIS BOOK OF SEAMANSHIP will give you the theory and information you need to make the most of that experience.

4 out of 5 stars Has good info..........2006-07-05

This book has some pretty good info and is quite comprehensive and well laid out. If you're going to buy 1 book, let it be this one. That's if you ever get around to reading it (it being so comprehensive and all) it's almost easier to go out sailing than trawl through it's many pages! But a worthwhile reference.

    5 out of 5 stars Smooth sailing.......2006-02-17

Unlike some reference books that I have seen, the Annapolis Book of Seamanship is clearly written and understandable for this novice.

You can run but you can not hide. the book that i been reading is a teen fiction. The main characters are jeff adn Caroline. There are thes two kids name Josh and Rachel. They are we playin with the matches and gas and they make a fire that gets out of hand. They drop the gas jug and the fire spreads to the woods. fire fighters try to put it out but its too much. No one thought that th fire would reach Pinch Canyon Moutain. The rich folks lived on that mountain and they did not Know that there houses was fisten to be burnt down. So the fire jumps the ditch and Jeff and Caroline try to run but caroline falls and her Jeff try to help her up. The fire is hot they are poring down with sweet. They keep on running they might make it alive and the might not maket out alive.

          4 out of 5 stars A Fiery Book.......2006-05-22

I honestly believe that this is a very good book, aimed mostly at teens though. Although I did like the book a lot, I wouldn't recommend it as a book meant to be "time consuming," as I finished it in a half an hour. There are some good points and bad points of this story. I didn't like the fact that there were, like 20 different characters. After a while, I got used to it, but it was hard to figure out at first. Another thing I didn't like was the fact that the storyline was sometimes confusing and I had to read over again. I feel that "Flash Fire" wasn't the best book by Ms. Cooney . That said, I like the book a lot. Some of the good points of the book were the thrilling, edge-of-your-seat plot, the nonstop adventure, and the thoroughly realistic storyline. I feel that "Flash Fire" is the perfect book for someone looking for adventure who has a tight schedule.

          4 out of 5 stars Okay.......2005-09-05

Flash Fire by Caroline B. Cooney was an okay book, to put it lightly, but certainly not the best novel, and it has a lot of characters.

It makes the plot kinda confusing. Anyways, inside the story, it switches to what's happening from character to character sort of, and they're not only talking about what's happening to the teenagers.

In the book, they are also discussing what's occuring to the parents, so it's kinda interesting.

          3 out of 5 stars not Cooney's best.......2005-01-21

I have to admit, I am a huge fan of Caroline B. Cooney. Her 'Losing Christina' series kept me in suspense the entire time and I couldn't stop reading 'the face on the milk carton.' However, this book did not add up. I really enjoyed the way it was told from different people's point of view and how the story took place over the course of a few hours but the characters were without emotion and unbelievable.

First off, Elisabeth, the eight-year-old sister of Beau drove me crazy. Her brother had just died in a fire and she was asking her mom for a kitton. I know we're supposed to feel sorry for her because her mom doesn't care about her but the entire time I wanted to erase her from the book entirely.

Also, when Danna had her leg broken from a horse stepping on it, all she could say for herself was "nice going" to the horse.

Beau and his mom were entirely self absorbed and I din't feel sorry for them either.

The best part of this book was when the little brushfire turned into a huge fire but after that it got pretty slow. I spent about two weeks without reading it before I realized that I had to give it back to the library and finished it.

I would recommend this book if you don't mind wooden characters and the same thing being repeated billions of times from different people's point of view.

3 out of 5 stars It is a good book.......2004-02-28

I read the book the Flash Fire and it is a very good book because it has really neat things about it. There are two things I love about this book, one is when the brush fire started out as a small fire and it got bigger and someone that was a fire fighter saved many lives that day. There were some people that died that day and they died because they were in their house and the house fell to the ground and burned. The next best part was the grass canyon road were a car had an accident, and the ropes saved many lives. I recommend you to read this book someday because someday and someone might save your life.

The serious consequences of vapor cloud explosions, flash fires, and BLEVEs are very well known. Better understanding of the characteristics of these phenomena and models to calculate their consequences are key to effective prevention and mitigation. Cited by EPA in its 1996 document, "Off-site Consequence Analysis Guidance, " the first half of the book describes the characteristics of these phenomena and gives an overview of past experimental and theoretical research and methods to estimate consequences. The second part focuses on methods for consequence estimating by presenting sample problems. The entire book is heavily illustrated with photos, charts, tables, and diagrams, and each chapter has a full set of references for additional reading.

5 out of 5 stars A practical manual to assist the menopausal woman to greater comfort during her change of life.......2006-09-14

"Hot Flashes: 21 Non-Hormonal Strategies to Put Out the Fire" is a tool to empower women to survive menopause by giving tips to help women control their hot flashes, or 'put out the fire.' The author, Julie Calligaro, is a former nurse and practicing attorney, and an author of several other self-help books for women. In brief, Calligaro begins by suggesting that the woman begin by establishing a baseline of frequency, duration, severity, and triggers of her hot flashes, then try any or all of the following approaches: Paced breathing, regular exercise, black cohash, red clover, soy foods, acupuncture, avoidance of triggers, cessation of smoking, reduce weight until achieving a health weight, bathing/showering in tepid water, and lowering the temperature of surroundings, especially the bedroom. Additionally, these are 10 cooling strategies suggested: Wear cotton, not wool or synthetics. Dress in layers. Wear sleepwear that wicks sweat away from the skin. Carry a pocket fan. Have fans positioned around home and workplace. Meditate. Do yoga. Adjust your attitude about menopause. Use BeKool Hot Flash gel sheets for immediate cooling. Wear kleenex in your bra. Calligaro's final suggestion to the reader is to maintain regular physical checkups, pap smears, and breast exams. "Hot Flashes" is a practical manual to assist the menopausal woman to greater comfort during her change of life.

I've been bothered by hot flashes on and off for quite some time and I've been looking for safe but effective ways to reduce them. Julie Calligaro's book has been a huge help to me. The information is clearly written and easy to understand. The methods she describes to reduce hot flashes and the tips she includes to make flashes easier to bear are excellent.

Hot Flashes 21 Non-Hormonal Strategies to Put Out the Fire is the book to have if you are struggling with Hot Flashes. After taking HRT for many years to control my hot flashes, I was told by my doctor that I would have to stop the medication and just deal with hot flashes. They returned with a vengeance, just as they had for the author, Julie Calligaro. Well, just dealing with them is easier said than done. So, a big thank you to Ms. Calligaro for her comprehensive book on safe and effective strategies to combat Hot Flashes. I am now very cool.

This book changed my life. With several simple, safe and inexpensive steps I now feel more in control of my hot flashes. I ordered the nightclothes recommended and now sleep better than I have in quite some time. Most importantly I re-evaluated my outlook on this major life change and found that merely changing my attitude has made a difference. I have recommended this book to many of my friends and family.
