                5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-10-04

Lundin goes beyong just the gear list for a "survival kit" and discusses the importance of regulating body temerature. Most other books do this but they do not go into as much detail to help you understand. Lundin also discusses the psychology of a survival situation that other authors do not do at all. Unless you have been lost in the wilderness alone you will not know what happens but Lundin does an excellent job of explaining not only what happens but how to overcome the situation. Excellent book to read but like he says, in order to fully understand the concepts you need to get out in the wild and take a survival course.

4 out of 5 stars A must-read for any hiker, hunter, camper, etc........2007-08-26

If you believe the TV drama crap in the show "Man vs. Wild" where Grylls is scaling cliffs and jumping into freezing rivers, this book isn't for you because Cody Lundin actually wants you to live. The book 98.6 Degrees tells you statistically that most people who die in the wilderness die from hypothermia and hypothermia -- not from avalanches, bear attacks, etc. But most people don't want to hear this maybe because it isn't exciting enough.

I think of this book as the foundation from which all survivalism studies should start. The book really goes into great detail into the "whys" of exposure and other conditions one commonly faces in the wild. You need this information so that you can adapt and think on your own for the unique situation you may face. Cody challenges traditional survivalism manuals and has the personal experience to back up what he writes. One reviewer labeled this book as a kum-bay-ya book, but the book is exactly the opposite. The book speaks with life saving frankness and flat out tells you that you will be worm food if you make certain wrong decisions.

The book has some great color photos and diagrams as well and has perhaps the best and most thorough advice on assembling a survival kit I've seen (the book explains why store bought kits are seriously lacking). The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that I felt the book, at times, spends a little too much time on trivia knowledge (e.g., history of the match) at the expense of more knowledge on shelter building strategies, how to build a fire, etc. I want more info on how to put the survival kit to use. I suppose that might be in a sequel to this wonderful book. Despite minor shortcomings, this book has completely changed how I look at preparing for and handling survival situations. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Lundin's fine book focuses on a practical hierarchy of priorities.......2007-07-29

I teach a brief segment on survival skills, and I completely rewrote my class outline after reading Lundin's book. Lundin explains why silly diagrams on building a figure four trap and a solar still do not add to survival skills, but core knowledge of the key priorities of shelter do.

I'll give it four stars instead of five because there is some silly rhetoric in it irrelevant to the survival issue. But I recommend this book to anyone interest in practical advice.

                5 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading.......2007-05-13

                Book Description

Seton Lloyd's lively account of Turkey's early history is for the ever-increasing number of people visiting the ancient sites of this fabled land. Written by an archaeologist who has spent much of his life in the Near East, the book is not a conventional "guide" to the antiquities of Anatolia, nor is it a textbook. It is instead Lloyd's attempt to share his profound interest in an antique land, its inhabitants, and the surviving monuments that link the present to the past.
Lloyd traces the many different cultures that have been a part of Turkey from prehistoric times to the Christian era. He recounts the exploits of the Hittite kings, the confrontation of Croesus and the Persian king Cyrus, the conquests of Alexander the Great, and Mithridates' epic resistance against Rome. Archaeological landmarks discussed include the discovery of the Alaca Hüyük tombs, the attempts to establish the location of Troy, and the opening of the Tomb of Midas. Lloyd shows how each successive culture has left its mark on an astonishing variety of sites, from the shrines of Çatal Hüyük to the temples of Ephesus and the churches founded by St. Paul.

4 out of 5 stars Good source on ancient history in Asia Minor.......2007-08-12

I bought this book as background reading for an upcoming trip to Turkey. It is a comprehensive and well-written overview of ancient history, from the Hittites up through the beginnings of Christianity in what is now Turkey, with context relating to the influence of adjacent areas as needed. It puts things in context and provides maps to help locate cultures and events geographically. I would recommend it for anyone interested in the subject, or reading up for a visit.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not exhaustive.......2006-05-14

The book gives a good introduction to the history of Anatolia up to the time of the early Christian Church. It can seem at times to be a little dry or shallow in its coverage. While it is on some sense a historical account, the author is an archeologist, and the narrative heavily leans on this direction. This is not necesarily bad since I read the book as a prelude to my trip to Turkey, but one should be aware of it before buying the book. All in all, I would recommend buying it.

                5 out of 5 stars One correction.......2001-05-16

Apologies to genuine readers who think politics has no place in this column. But I could not help add a very simple fact. If only this Dutch fellow who has spent years as an archeologist visited Istanbul to find Armenian churches all over the place as the Armenian community who were left intact in Istanbul after the so-called genocide (!). Oh, if it was Asia Minor where he could not find anything left Armenian, he only needed to as far as Erzurum, Erzincan, Kars (eastern provinces of Turkey) to see mass graves of Turks still being uncovered today as the legacy of Armenian gangs.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Study of Ancient History of Turkey.......2001-01-06

Seton Lloyd is known to American public by his commentaries on Public Television documentaries about Turkey. He is a well informed scholar, and trustworthy. Therefore I was offended by the Amsterdam, Holland reviewer who, trying to push his own political agenda, tries to kick dirt on Seton Lloyd. Seton Lloyd writes what is Turkey most famous for: its Greco-Roman, ancient Hittite, and Mesopotanian heritage. Most Americans I know want to go Turkey to see the earliest churches of Christianity, likewise many Europeans enjoy discovering their Christian-Greco-Roman heritage as well. There are a lot of Armenian relics in Turkey, a country with the history of many peoples and cultures. Visitors to those regions know where they are and they go to visit them as well.

5 out of 5 stars Going to Turkey? Read this first...........2000-12-26

This was one of our best preparations for our tour of Turkey ( cascoly.com/tours.htm) It covers an enormous period from prehistoric times to the Christian era, yet manages to set everything in perspective. Lloyd traces the exploits of the Hittite kings, the confrontation of Croesus and the Persian king Cyrus, the conquests of Alexander the Great, and Mithridates' epic resistance against Rome. Plus, it addresses the history as a traveler will see it. Archaeological landmarks discussed include the discovery of the Alaca Huyuk tombs, the attempts to establish the location of Troy, and the opening of the Tomb of Midas. Lloyd shows how each successive culture has left its mark on an astonishing variety of sites, from the shrines of Catal Huyuk to the temples of Ephesus and the churches founded by St. Paul. In our month long trip we only managed to visit about half the sites that he discusses, although we saw many of them represented in museums. But that just means we'll still be using this book on our next trip. My only wish would be that he could follow with a book covering the last 2000 years of Turkish history

                Book Description

Throughout the millennia Turkey formed the core of several Empires - Persia, Rome, Byzantium - before becoming the center of the Ottoman Empire. All these civilizations have left their marks on the landscape, architecture and art of Turkey - a place of fascinating overlapping cultures.

A Traveller's History of Turkey offers a concise and readable account of the region from Prehistory right up to the present day. It covers everything from the legendary Flood of Noah, the early civilization of Catal Huyuk seven thousand years before Christ, through the treasures of Troy, Alexander the Great, the Romans, Seljuks, Byzantines and the Golden Age of the Sultans, to the twentieth century's great changes wrought by Kemal Ataturk and the strong position Turkey now holds in the world community.

ln the book Mr.Stoneman is claiming that Turkish army massacared 10000 kurds. And also about the greek invasion, he says turks killed and raped the greek and armenian inhabitants of izmir. The information he is providing is sided.lf we are talking about the history, the author has to have evidences and written records about the events he is reporting.lf he is just writting the stories he heard from the others it can not be accepted "true" immediately.lt seems that he did not make any research about the past at all, but he wrote the things just like he wanted. People can not change the past.Mr. Stoneman should be more responsible and correct the wrong information in his book.Or he has to rename his book:"A fictive story of turkey to the sided people who likes to believe that all turks are bad" Finally, general sound of the book is blaming turks on every issue.lt is %100 wrong that Turks did all the bad things. One should make researches and listen to both sides before coming to a conclusion.lf there is no written records, those events should not be mentioned in the serious! history books.Although he has the names of some books listed at the end of the book he is not refering to the certain pages of the books for his conclusions. All because of these the book is not professional at all.

There's too much - more than 60% of the book - devoted to the pre-Ottoman period. There's too much emphasis on ancient Turkey. To understand modern Turkey, it is essential to understand the Ottoman and the Attaturk legacies. Only about 30 pages are devoted to the Attaturk and post-Attaturk period. It is just not possible to understand the role of Islam, the military, the position of women, etc., in modern Turkey, without in-depth reference to the impact of the Ottomans and Attaturk to attitudes and values in the country.

From the title, one might expect the author to be making a long horseback ride through Turkey and Iran. Actually, the book is about riding buses across the countryside and taking a horseback ride whenever possible. It isn't until the last quarter of the book that an extensive ride, where the author actually purchases a horse, takes place.

This is a little less romantic, but the adventures on the bus are very interesting. The primary theme is dodging Iranian revolutionary guards. The author is arrested in 4 or 5 towns and in each case, she out wits her captors and gets released.

In the meantime, we get to know a wide number of local tribes, a lot of ancient history and a personal insight to places too dangerous for a European male to wander.

If you want to visit Iran and/or Turkey, this isn't a bad way to keep the interest alive without risking your neck (literally)

Ionia and Aeolis, Heracleia and Aphrodisias -- these are names that for many have only the sound of familiarity. Through the author's discoveries we experience them too, and in doing so find a world which, in spite of harshness, conflict and insecurity, contains much beauty and happiness.

IONIA records the first stage of Freya Stark's journey in Turkey through the Seljuk and Ottoman ages.

                    Book Description

The history of the city where East meets West spans 28 centuries. Istanbul, the ancient and timeless heart of modern Turkey, is a city with its mythological origins in the seventh century BC. Founded as Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire by Constantine the Great, during the 1000-year Byzantine Empire that followed it was a city of fabled riches. After its fall to the Turks in 1453, the splendors of the Ottoman Empire kept it glorious.

Drawing on diaries, letters, memoirs, histories, and novels from the sixth-century AD onwards, this inspiring anthology recreates the vanished glories of the city, and includes: coronation of a Byzantine emperor; funeral of a sultan; triumphal entry of Mehmet the Conqueror; building of the Süleymaniye, the most magnificent of the city's mosques; harems in the sixteenth century; death of Atatürk in 1938; Byzantine holy relics; Turkish baths and coffee-houses. All this and much more is vividly described in the words of those who were actually there, to offer an original and indispensable companion for the discriminating traveller.

Archaeological landmarks discussed include the discovery of the Alaca Hyk tombs, the attempts to establish the location of Troy, and the opening of the Tomb of Midas. Lloyd shows how each successive culture has left its mark on an astonishing variety of sites, from the shrines of atal Hyk to the temples of Ephesus and the churches founded by St. Paul.

                        Book Description

Jane Taylor’s classic guidebook to Istanbul is acknowledged as the ultimate introduction to the city. It leads travellers from the great monuments of Byzantium and early Constantinople to the mosques and palaces built for Suleyman the Magnificent and the other Sultans while providing both practical information and a rich historical context. It also covers more recent sites: ranging from the mundane (the Galatasaray fishmarket) to the magnificent pavilions and villas of late Ottoman times. In addition to Istanbul, the cities of Iznik, Bursa and Edirne are covered in extensive detail. Filled with maps, itineraries, plans and descriptions of all the sites that any visitor could hope to see, this is the only guidebook that a traveller to Istanbul will ever need.

Stevie, 13, has started at a new school and is desperate for acceptance. Like any teenager, he is self-conscious and embarrassed by his family. But he also hates himself for being cruelly bullied at his old school, and he will do anything to be accepted by bullies here rather than be their victim. Then he finds an odd fossil called a Devil's Toenail, which fills him with an almost evil sense of daring. The Devil's Toenail's tauntings and urgings to take revenge on the world are relentless, but in the end, Stevie discovers that believing in himself is what brings true power and happiness.
